"I understand that a lot of people view Twitter as stupid, and certainly not worth $1 billion dollars. But step back for a second and look at it this way: For much of this argument, I’m just using “Twitter” the way my colleague Steve Gillmor uses it, which is to say, as a word not tied to one brand but meaning the “realtime web.” It doesn’t matter what method we use for this realtime information dissemination, what matters is that it is happening. And this is the future." - MG Siegler, Nov. 27, 2009

"There are few criminals pursued with more vigor than those who make their own money. Counterfeiting is considered such a threat to the fabric of the United States that it is—with treason—one of only two criminal offenses named in the Constitution. "... It was just an experiment, "to see if I could do it," he tells me in a letter from prison, a few months after our initial conversation."

"Advertising, as is clear by now, is contracting. Spending dropped 2.9 percent in 2008, to $210 billion. For 2009, Veronis Suhler expects advertising to end up declining 7.6 percent, with a 1 percent decline to follow in 2010. Advertising will again grow in 2011, the firm projects. The segments where advertising will decline most rapidly in 2009, according to the firm’s estimates, are newspapers (down 18.7 percent, to $35.5 billion); consumer magazines (down 14.8 percent, to $11 billion); radio (down 11.7 percent, to $15.8 billion); and broadcast television (down 10.1 percent, to $43.0 billion). Veronis Suhler expects a few sectors to increase their advertising dollars this year, including mobile (up 18.1 percent, to $1.3 billion) and the Internet (up 9.2 percent, to $23.8 billion)."

* Yes, I know polls are full of controversy and not scientific. It was only a bit of fun. Then again, I agree with the results, because I prefer Helvetica also. :)

It's my choice. It's really clean. I would like a dark theme too!

hmmmm, almost people like very simple style. I agree, but friendfeed need to have gaudy themes if they like to get popular. That's too difficult. I use Blue Wave now.

Probably because it is the closest in type to the old friendfeed theme ! :P

Helvetica is just really clean and minimalist. Love it.
- LANjackal
I'd really like some dark theme options, but until such a time, the minimalist Helvetica is my choice as well.

OK, I'm just going to say it, and I don't mean to hurt anyone's feeling who created these themes. I also know more are on their way, but these first themes were rather bland. The only reason I choose Helvetica was; it was the only one that didn't suck. I suggest hiring some of the best skinners, or graphic designers around. You can find most of them on deviantart.com. Besides, most of...

Yeah I love Helvetica, but I'd love to have a darker theme. Like I said in another thread, old school monochrome monitor style would rock :P

Steve Wright's "Digital Compositing For FIlm And Video" is by far my favorite application-agnostic VFX textbook. Incremental, accessible, and eminently practical, it's packed to bursting with strategies for triumphing over real production challenges. Although written primarily for node-based compositing systems (eg. Nuke and Shake) most of the examples can be easily adapted for use in layer-based systems such as Photoshop and After Effects. Still, this is perhaps not the best text for an aspiring After Effects artist (I'd start instead with Mark Christiansen's book, above). But once you've become comfortable with the basics in your chosen application and are looking to gain a real understanding of the hows and whys (and cheats and hacks) of professional digital compositing, this is the book I'd turn to next.

In the spirit of "Ideas Worth Spreading," TEDx is a program that enables schools, businesses, libraries or just groups of friends to enjoy a TED-like experience through events they themselves organize, design and host. We're supporting approved organizers by offering a free toolset that includes detailed advice, the right to use recorded TEDTalks, promotion on our site, connection to other organizers, and a little piece of our brand in the form of the TEDx label. It's an experiment that we hope will nurture the growth of a truly global TED community.
