Stuffing comes in a box. Dressing is what we have on Thanksgiving; it's made with cornbread and celery and doesn't go inside the turkey. I'm from Georgia. :)
- Laura B.
Stuffing. I got it from my mom who grew up in Massachusetts.
- Michelle Martinez
Akiva says it's only stuffing if it's baked in the bird. Otherwise, it's dressing. He's from Texas.
- Rochelle
From Missouri: We say both and were ignorant of the difference.
- SAM
Yeah, dressing and stuffing are separate entities to me too. Stuffing is stuffed inside. Dressing dresses the outside. EDIT: from UK.
- Mark H
Stuffing. Currently in Nevada. Going back to Cali in a couple of months. My immediate family is/was not from this country, so when they started celebrating Thanksgiving after they came to California, they heard stuffing.
- Helen Sventitsky
I have a theory that the difference is regional. I suspect the dislike of the word "stuffing" is a Bible Belt thing.
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
Harvey, I agree with this theory. I've been in Seattle for nearly 28 years and have never once heard someone native to here call it dressing.
- Rochelle
As far as I can remember, my family has always called it stuffing. We're New York Jews.
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
Stuffing - dressing is something you do with your clothes to cover yourself up (from UK)
- WorldofHiglet
I wonder if us southerners think "stuffing" has a sexual connotation. :)
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
you americans are crazy. stuffing is for the inside of a poultry, dressing is some sort of gravy or sauce for on top of something (eg a salad)
- Snipergirl
Well, Snipergirl, there's dressing, and then there's dressing.
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
A salad is considered dressing? Hmm. I don't think I've ever heard (that is,in Seattle) any *food* ever called dressing. Dressing is what you do with clothes in the morning and that's about it.
- Rochelle
@rochelles no a salad dressing is what you put on salad
- Snipergirl
Snipergirl salad dressing is different from dressing (mush made from cornbread).
- Anika
When I put my clothes on, it's dressing. When I stuff the turkey, it's stuffing. Oh,and I'm a Midwestener. My mom used to make oyster stuffing for Thanksgiving. So good.
- Sarah June
And even here in the States, depending on region, salad dressing can mean different things. Here in CA it means like ranch, Italian, Thousand Island, but in the midwest, it's some mayonnaise mixture made with relish that people put on sandwiches.
- Anika
I stuff a bird. Mind you, being from England, that certainly has more than one meaning.
- Ian May
Stuffing. We get it out of a box, but don't cook it inside the turkey (personally, I don't even eat it anyway). I'm familiar with the term dressing, but have never used it in this particular situation. I'm from Massachusetts.
- PENGUIN: MAJOR CAPS LOCK
@faboomama @rochelles @ha3rvey while I do admit to understanding that this is a conversation about American English only, I would probably alert you to the fact that most people in the world who speak English actually speak British English or a close variant of it (including Canadians funnily enough)- thus to many people outside the US, dressing is a perfectly valid term for what you put on salad, and is never used to denote your cornbread thingy
- Snipergirl
though i must admit that the cornbread thingy sounds OM NOM NOM NOM
- Snipergirl
To be even more pedantic, not all dressings/stuffings have cornbread. :)
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
stuffing here as well (Washington), though I do here dressing now and then. And in my circles, we rarely have cornbread stuffing, just to be difficult. ;)
- holly
Which is why they're different words to me. Dressing is made with cornbread (or any bread really), but stuffing is mostly meat-based and goes inside the bird.
- Anika
They are two different things, like Anika said, but mostly, I eat cornbread dressing. Mmmm. With cranberry sauce on the side. Oh and turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans and...
- Carmen
Just to blow my own horn, I made a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner with roasted acorn squash with a chestnut and craisin stuffing and mushroom gravy. It was SO GOOD.
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
As someone in the midwest, I don't think I've ever called the stuff I put on sandwiches dressing. I wonder where they eat that stuff. Hmmmm. I do call anything I put on a salad, salad dressing.
- Sarah June
Actually, I was thinking about that, most of my family who are from the south originally, but live in the midwest now, call *any* spread to put on sandwiches "salad dressing". I wonder if that's old Southern thing.
- Anika
Maybe. The concoction sounds interesting. :-) I'm kind of plain person when it comes to sandwiches. Usually just mayo. And Ha3rvey, that sounds wonderful.
- Sarah June
I thought I remembered a sandwich spread under the Miracle Whip brand name. My google-fu fails me right now, though.
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
Ha3rvey, I love you. However, as I have said before, I am a Miracle Whip kind of girl. :P That said, the jar of MW in my kitchen does call itself "dressing," but not "salad dressing." When I was in the UK, I put "salad cream" on my sandwiches.
- Laura B.
Okay, 'salad cream' just gives me the heebie-jeebies. LOL
- Anika
Stuffing, I'm from all over the US (mom & dad are too, although the recipe is southern), but we always put it in the bird, so stuffing fits. And it's not meat-based - it's Wonder bread based, with bacon, celery, and poultry seasoning - yummy. In New Orleans, when they ask if you want your po boy dressed, they mean, do you want lettuce, tomato, mayo, etc., which makes sense since the po boy would be almost naked without it.
- Cassandra
Like Rochelle said, we call it stuffing in Seattle and I was born and raised here. My husband is from MN and he calls it dressing. To me, dressing is for salad. Or what you do when you put on clothes. ;-)
- Annie Anderson
I say stuffing, but that's my Brooklyn roots. Actually, I say both since dressing is something completely different: Salad sauce, or stuffing that didn't actually get stuffed anywhere. (don't like dressing)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
It's stuffed in a bird, but comes out dressing.....although if you bake it in a dish, it's still dressing....New York state....English heritage.
- Bonnie Foster
Michigan: I say stuffing, but I've heard both.
- R1CC1
I say stuffing (born in the USA</springsteen>), my wife says dressing (born in Canada). This topic came up for the first time this year and I'm not sure how - I've been living with Thanksgiving in October for over 15 years now :)
- Micah Wittman
Dressing goes on salad. Stuffing goes in a turkey. Montreal, QC

I only see my stats for the last week (17/14 = 1.21) Please tell me your 670 number is for more than just a week!
- Brian Johns
1.44 (566/391) for brianjohns (after week tally you should see a comma then 'all time' count - I can see it on your page)
- Micah Wittman
OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...
- Brian Johns
3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.
- Cyrus Lendvay
FFers use FF with their own strategy or simply default tendencies. The ratio is an interesting snapshot of behaviour. Thanks for joining in everyone, hope more keep flowing in.
- Micah Wittman

0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.
- Bren, Photophobe
0.62 then again i have over 11,000 comments
- Cee Bee
1.23 (5287/4229) - I am put to shame by Cee Bee's participation, good grief!
- Her Lindsay-ness
So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah Wittman
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!
- Micah Wittman
.68 6986/10194 Someone wrote a great article on the comment-like ratio a few months ago. Search on FriendFeed is crashing on me... I'll try to get the link.
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks Mitchell (btw, search crashing on me too - lots)
- Micah Wittman
1316 comments/20221 likes (0.06), according to Windows Calculator, although I probably screwed up.
- Tyson Key
A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah Wittman
Darn - 0.52. I guess I need to say why I like something a little more often :-) Liking this thread because I was wondering the same thing recently. Has anybody worked out the average from the numbers here? </islazy>
- Andy Bold
Andy, scroll upward and you'll see a couple calculations from before (January: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81)
- Micah Wittman
Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)
- Micah Wittman
Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah Wittman
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah Wittman
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah Wittman
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren, Photophobe
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.
- Micah Wittman
Wow I didn't realize I was so out of whack!! 12.23 that's got to be a record (and I don't even import my feeds with the summary as a comment)!!
- Chris Myles
Thanks JA, Chris (wow, 12+ is unusual :), Serkan and Nine!
- Micah Wittman
0.89 (17818/19913) (Somebody better make a cool ass graph of all this data!)
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
OK, so statistically, what ratio results in better interaction on FF?
- Jason Huebel
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah Wittman
So I'm fairly balanced, it appears. I would imagine it's because I try to comment on every post I like. That's not always true, obviously. But mostly it is.
- Jason Huebel
Just clicking "Like" seems too easy. I feel like I should say something, too.
- Jason Huebel
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah Wittman
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren, Photophobe
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren, Photophobe
Thanks Paola, Michael, Artemko, J. and Daniel!

So have all the geeks left FriendFeed? Reply to this post with where you feel you fall - 'geek' or 'non-geek'. :-) EDIT: I think that's pretty clear, the geeks have *not* left FriendFeed. :-)
a carnival performer who does disgusting acts eccentric: a person with an unusual or odd personality , or an individual with a passion for computers, to the exclusion of other normal human interests. I assume we are using the last definition?

Geek, but not in terms of tech, rather comic books, etc. :)
- Derrick
You hand in your ticket...And you go watch the geek...Who immediately walks up to you...When he hears you speak...And says, "How does it feel...To be such a freak?"...And you say, "Impossible"...As he hands you a bone
- Greg GuitarBuster
Geek, of course. That's why I don't fit in on other social networks.
- April Russo (app103)
Nerd and Proud™! (which should count as geek)
- Marco Fabbri
@Marco Fabbri: Nerd != Geek. In SML Dictionary, Nerds have no fashion sense and can't talk to people, Geeks generally have a fashion sense and can carry on a conversation relatively ok; nerds usually wear white t-shirts and white sneakers; Geeks generally wear black t-shirts and black sneakers. A classic example: Nerd = Bill gates; Geek = Steve Jobs!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
depends on what we are geeking out about. if we're talking about music, shoes, spinning, dyeing, yarn, german history, b movies and zombies- then ubergeek.

- ffcode
@See-ming Lee that is indeed controversial. Anyway as choice was given between geek and non-geek I meant some degree of nerd counts as geek.
- Marco Fabbri
@Marco Fabbri Well I think that all geeks are nerds, but all nerds != geeks. I believe that Set(Geek) includes Set(Nerd) but this is a question I have been thinking about for years now and I don't yet have a conclusion yet. But at least that's where I'm at now!
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

- T. Brent, technopeasant
The way I look at it, most of my friends primarily use Facebook OR Twitter. A few use both, and a few have YouTube Accounts. They don't read RSS feeds or use Google Reader or Digg or StumbleUpon. Therefore, non-geeks cannot see the benefits of this aggregation power (anyone agree or not?)
- Nathan Snyder
Proof that geeks have NOT left FriendFeed? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I don't follow a lot of you FFers on Twitter because I mostly just see your updates here. Now that I have lists, I'm more able to keep up with the flood of information, so feel free to share or DM your Twitter name if you'd like me to follow you. Mine is joeybean, but I'm boring and import all to here anyway.
I go by the same username as here (dendroica), but I'll start importing my Twitter updates again once the realtime issue gets solved.

@dennis_jernberg = http://twitter.com/dennis_... And I'm building some pretty impressive lists of my own, too, starting with my big NaNoWriMo list. Anybody here can follow me if you want, and I'll add you to my FriendFeeders list.
- Dennis Jernberg
I'm @joshuamneff, but it all comes to FriendFeed, so I don't expect you to follow me. (You can if you want, though.)

its often worthwhile to follow someone on multiple services when one is easier to check at times, for example some mobile phones have far better clients for twitter than for friendfeed

The will was made more important because she and I are leaving the country to go to LeWeb in Paris France this December, and who knows? We have the twins going to friends of the family, but if I hear better offers here, let's talk. :)
- Louis Gray
Derrick, it is bad. I couldn't read my iPhone e-mails or see the last time I called anyone. BLURRY.

You should consider setting up a trust instead of a will. That's the route I took after hearing some financial people talk
- Shevonne
Shevonne, the trust is next. We got a package deal, and will do that soon.

- Michael Hocter
An acquaintance had a really hard time with breastfeeding, and part of me just said: dude(ette) you need to f-ing RELAX (and have a beer).they used to give wet nurses beer (hefeweizen) as part of their salary! It "brings it down" in the b-feeding parlance, I guess.

Some babbies didn't live, I think. That's probably why it's really easy to make a lot of them.

I am in the Detroit area, yes. But it's not just the Lions. Players can't hold onto the ball. Coaches making inexplicable calls. Pretty lackluster and boring overall. Or maybe it's just the games I'm watching. Or it could be that I've just had my fill of the NFL. It's happened before.

from fftogo
Oh, I know it's a problem all over. I was just imaging that having the Lions' constant problems in the spotlight all of the time could make it seem even worse.
- Katy S
Naw Katy, if you live in Southeast Michigan, you're used to seeing the Lions loose. It's been a constant problem. You learn to follow other teams. And I love the game enough and know enough about it to enjoy just about any team. I watch it for the game. For the moments, for the line play and the defensive play. To me, the overall caliber of play is just not worth watching.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
I go through times when I pay attention and others when I don't. Right now I'm just really paying attention to the Colts. And even then, I don't watch the games since I don't have a tv. I listen to them and sometimes check out highlights, but I don't go out of my way to check out too many other games. But then, I'm from Indiana. When basketball season starts, I'll probably be a much more involved sports fan. :-)
