"I’m quite positive that this video has been around for quite some time (since it was filmed in 1993), but for those who missed it here is an interview with Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, discussing his logo designer, Paul Rand – Steve is one happy client!"

the article doesn't go into enough depth so here's the whole deal. Rand was working with IBM doing their branding and design when Jobs came to know of him. Initially Rand said no to Steve's offer to do Next's logo so Steve directly went to IBM's CEO and asked him to release Rand. God knows how but Rand was released from IBM and Jobs again begged Rand to work on the Next logo. An angry Rand agreed but on the condition that ONLY one concept will be designed and it will cost $100,000 for that single concept: take it or leave it. What came out of that was the next logo with the lowercase "e".

here's Rand's marketing speak for that logo concept - " The lowercase e could stand for “education, excellence, expertise, exceptional, excitement, e=mc2”. The logo was said to “brim with the informality, friendliness, and spontaneity of a Christmas seal and the authority of a rubber stamp”.
