"A photo turns up of you nakedly doing something that would shame you and your family for generations. Bestiality, perhaps. How many people in your life you would trust with that photo? If you're like the rest of us, you probably have at most two. Even more depressing, studies show that about one out of four people have no one they can confide in. The average number of close friends we say we have is dropping fast, down dramatically in just the last 20 years. Why?" (According to them: Segmented society.)

"You don't wait for a girl to verbally tell you she likes you. It's the sparkle in her eyes, her posture, the way she grabs your head and shoves your face into her boobs. Thanks RSD- too bad the key comes at the end:You want to break out of that black tar pit of self-hatred? Brush the black hair out of your eyes, step away from the computer and buy a nice gift for someone you loathe. Send a card to your worst enemy. Make dinner for your mom and dad. Coastal areas have made recent news with the arrival of several storms, concerns about rising sea levels and other environmental and conservation efforts. While they're at it, I wish Google would look at pushing LZMA over DEFLATE for compression. It offers significant savings and speedy decompression. I believe Yahoo added a JS API for using it in BrowserPlus, but I really wish there was an Accept-Encoding: lzma, gzip that would allow servers to send back LZMA encoded data. Google could also incorporate it into SPDY for header compression.

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. Rails was an amazing teacher. I loved it’s “do exactly as I say” paint-by-numbers framework that taught me some great guidelines. I love Ruby for making me really understand OOP. God, Ruby is so beautiful. I love you, Ruby.
- Meryn Stol
Rutger, note that - as always with my Delicious bookmarks - this is a literal quote from a page. On a personal front, I'm just experiencing some existential doubt over language choice for my new project. :) I have virtually no experience in Ruby, and while I simply adore the language in itself, I'm wondering if I might not be just better off with sticking to what I know, keeping on...
- Meryn Stol
Right now, I have a hard time rationalizing a choice for Ruby and Rails, other than that it would be "cool", that it would be an added challenge (in general, I like challenge), and that it would result in the most beautiful code. But I don't think it will matter much to the outcome, the actual software. I'm afraid it would be a net negative.
- Meryn Stol
In short, I don't think the language features of Ruby could potentially improve my productivity much. Good OO design can be done just as good in PHP. In fact, most "OO" thinking (design patterns) and such come from languages less powerful than PHP (Java, C++ primarily) and as such if you do "classic" OO design you often don't use all the magic an interpreted language can offer you.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, having a similar debate myself at the moment. Ruby vs PHP vs Python. As much as I would seriously cherish the chance to do the project in RoR, there is already a big hill to climb. Probably going to fall down on the side of Python. And, hey, if Python is good enough for Friendfeed, it it sure as hell good enough for me ;-)
- Andy Bold
Andy, what has been your primary language up till now?
- Meryn Stol
Python is too ugly for me to be willing to try. I know the runtime is very strong, so I understand lots of big projects are done with it. Besides, some people don't care about aesthetics in programming. That is, I can imagine myself having designed Ruby. I could never have imagined myself having designed Python.
- Meryn Stol
I know there are lots of real Programmers who speak multiple languages and can switch back and forth between them at will. I'm not one of those people. My native language is Perl. I grew up speaking Perl. I think in Perl. With other languages there's just a little bit of a lag, in the same way I suspect someone who learns Spanish in high school can be fluent, but it's never really ingrained. When I want to be efficient and quick, I always fall back to my native language.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, yes I think I'm one of those types too. But replace Perl for PHP in my case. But I'd guess that Perl could be used to built very strong OO architectures too. But I think that at the height of Perl's popularity, it wasn't really being used for big architectures... Still mostly scripting. People have gone pretty wild in PHP. Just have a look at the endless MVC frameworks around.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, it's Perl for when I need to get really down and dirty, and Python for when I want something to stand the test of time. Ruby nearly supplanted Python a couple of years ago but, Python is back up there, mainly because of Django. For some reason Django just 'fits' the way I think & work, but I struggle with getting my thinking lined with RoR.
- Andy Bold
Ok. Well I've build some pretty big stuff in PHP... So I definitely expect thing built in PHP to be able to stand the test of time.. You also have the "big" web open source projects, Wordpress, Drupal. Joomla, all three done in PHP. Those surely have stood the test time. :) It's also that I've got so much experience with working around PHP's limitations (PHP 4 at that time), that they don't matter to me much. They just require you to be a little more inventive.
- Meryn Stol
Sorry, went slightly off-PHP-topic there :-) I used to default to PHP for web work as well, but perl LWP changed that a few years ago. And then Python + Django started to happen. I really want to spend some time with some of the PHP frameworks to see if I can get to grips with them though.
- Andy Bold
Andy, there are some pretty strong PHP5 MVC frameworks out nowadays. There's Kohana, and just today I stumbled upon http://doophp.com/ . I would stay away from Zend Framework. I don't think it's true to the PHP spirit. It's more like "Java for PHP".
- Meryn Stol
I'll remember this as a teaching aid for programming. Thanks for posting, Meryn!
- Melanie Reed
There's also CakePHP, which is the basis for NoseRub.
- Ken Sheppardson
CakePHP is old. I don't think that nowadays I'd code for anything lower than 5.2.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, I do like Zend Framework a lot, and Java pissed me off... so, I suppose I can't say that ZF is java-ish... :) Why are you saying that? Yes, ZF is a war tank, not what you could possibly use in your backyard, but still...
- Claudio Cicali ♋
Thanks, Meryn! The PHP framework I keep bumping into is Symfony. I'll add Kohana and doophp to the list to look at :)
- Andy Bold
from email
Claudio, it's just too big for my taste. Like what you say, a war tank.
- Meryn Stol
Andy, if Zend Framework is a war tank (as Claudio says), then Symfony certainly is. Symfony is really made for big-ass websites, not for smaller projects. Let's just say every framework has its place, but if you're into Django and Rails, I think you'd be best off with trying out the smaller PHP5 MVC frameworks first.
- Meryn Stol
