- Christophe PHU
I'd say that deserves a big "w00t" if anything. Shaves a few seconds off download time on slow connections, and that's before any runAsync work.

Post gzip + advdef. Not as much benefit on small scripts like the crx and xpi, but serious savings on the bigger website. I need to figure out why there are 50+ functions that end up looking like this: function npc(a,b){a.b=b;return a}.
- Matt M (inactive)
from iPhone
It's because of the inliner. Both MethodInliner and JsInliner do not permit a parameter to be referenced more than once. Since 'a' is referenced twice, they fail to inline. Pretty much every builder-pattern setter function will end up post-obfuscation as function XXX(a,b) { a.b = b; return a; }
- Ray Cromwell
I have a fairly large patch undergoing review right now that should eliminate most of these.
- Ray Cromwell
Nice. That should eliminate a pretty big chunk of the repeating code. I just realized that one of our generators is responsible for spamming dozens of return null, return true and return false calls. I should be able to remove some of this extra cruft with a simple change.
- Matt M (inactive)
You can knock another 6% off by inlining polymorphic vtable setup at the cost of losing stack trace info. Another 1% is possible using LZDIST for a sorting metric, and probably a few more percent by either replacing JS constructors with a utility function, or replacing duplicate static method bodies with references to the original function.
- Ray Cromwell
Should be. Google's mobile maps app for Palm (and iPhone) is built using GWT. Though I don't know how much of the Mojo framework they used. Probably not much, given that it runs on the iPhone as well.
- Joel Webber
I send a DM to Dion Almaer, I'm waiting for its response...

"As part of this change, developers will be able to provide screenshots, promotional icons and descriptions that will better show off applications and games. We have also added four new sub-categories for applications: sports, health, themes, and comics."

This improvement is welcomed, but I would have prefered an API that helps me to build my own market. Could you simply imagine a world where there will be only one identical shop for all countries, for all cultures, for all ages, for all products ? Sorry, I can't. Give us an API, it will help the community to build the success of the Android plateform.
- Didier Girard
I think it's unfair to make a comparison when the iPhone was out for over a year before the first Android phone. It must also be noted that we don't know how many iPhone devs were locked out because of Apple's inconsistent review policies.
- James Williams
I want an API for the MarketPlace then I will be able to build my own. This MarketPlace would not be better or worst than Google one, it will simply be different : that's the internet, that's the web.

In most OECD "rich" countries, birthrates are below the replacement rate of 2.1 per couple. If all countries followed this path, the earth would be saved, because in a few generations, human civilization would be gone. I'd like the earth to be saved, because it's a home for humanity, with human civilization gone, that justification somewhat disappears and the argument is to save it, even if no sentient intelligent life is left to observe it. :)
- Ray Cromwell
But a little below replacement rate doesn't seem like a terribly bad thing right now. I'm pretty sure that if the population dropped a bit for a few generations, we would naturally settle at a more stable global population (and fertility rates would rise back to or above replacement), probably oscillating a bit. ~6 billion seems like a hell of a lot of people to me...
- Joel Webber
I think that human population will stop growing. If it is not by conscientiousness, other factor will act.
- Didier Girard
In many OECD countries, it's almost 50% below the replacement rate. Without mass immigration or massive productivity increases, they'll be a huge crisis for social welfare. Typically, these studies measure the carbon footprint of Westerners, but that's declining. The real problem is the developing world which is combining rapid economic growth with rapid population growth.
- Ray Cromwell
A dropping population rate can be countered by an increasing automation rate. The core problem with this is the inherently closed-source nature of such profitable ideas as factories that run with humans needed mostly for robot-supervision, and our wealth-sharing techniques that make the deprecation and obsoletion of repetitive-tasks harmful to potentially millions of employees.

...Imagine how many people would be out of a job if some shiny new software made secretaries / bureaucratic pencil-pusher obsolete? ...If only we had some kind of free job-reeducation system to teach new trades to displaced workers, and some form of profit sharing / subsidizing that could unlock so many amazing, patented technologies, to reduce the need for cut-throat business ethics by...

LOL
- Steph (sh_skew)
This is so stupid Loic. You can't trademark a boy's name. You can *maybe* do it for loiclemeur which would be your personal brand, but someone else will be born with that name at some point. If you want to be like scobleizer, try loicmeister :) P.S. love the accent...no joke.

What will the blackhat SEO experts, the SM spammers, and the social media experts do during a widespread outage? The answer is obvious: While sitting out the crisis they're fine-tuning their methodology. Seriously, your question offends me. There's a gazillion of SEO experts out there who do not abuse social media.
- Sebastian
Sebastian there can't be a gazillion SEO experts! What's 10,000 keywords times 20?? (and that's being generous!)
- Arleen Boyd
Would a social media expert consider it to be a crisis? If they rely so heavily on just one or two tools that it's enough to throw them into a tizzy, their expert status would seem to me to be ... questionable, at best.
- Gord McLeod
Arleen, 10,000 keyword phrases times 20 is a tiny fraction of the search terms that are worth optimizing for. Think of the long tail. Also, consider lots of webmasters and even publishers / site owners / bloggers / Web developers ... SEO experts who are able to optimize their stuff quite successfully but don't sell or publish their expertise. Many of them, and even many SEO consultants, do make sensible use of social media, as plain users.
- Sebastian
Gord, in a social media spammer's book 2 hours of outage, IOW 2 hours w/o sales from sneakily distributed links to questionable sales pitches, can sum up to way more than a good day's beer money. ;) However, "crisis" might be a term too strong for this potential loss.
- Sebastian
You must be dying of laughter now Robert!

- Didier Girard
:-), I think it will be much harder.
- Didier Girard
I would very much like that. It's a bit harder to do it "properly" in the GWT context, because Scala compiles to bytecode -- but the constructs it generates would likely not map very well back to Javascript without significant work. Whereas Scala source would cross-compile very cleanly to Javascript (e.g., lambdas, pattern matching, and the like).
