A story of Britain's similar success with free drugs for addicts back in the 80s and 90s: http://origin.reddit.com/r... -- killed by US pressure.
dhh
Treating drug addicts as patients instead of criminals is so self-evidently correct. It's heartbreaking to see their continued persecution.

But maybe something highly specific would be a great place to start. Like defeating patent trolls and their shakedowns.

Lots of other lawsuits I'd like to support. Like the right to record on-duty cops doing bad things http://www.alternet.org/story...
dhh
Wish there was a site like Kickstarter for lawsuits, especially against patent trolls. Crowdfinance a bigger club to beat those trolls with.

$GRPN just crashed 12%. Not because people realized the potential harm to vendors or the troubled biz model. No, analyst expectations?!

Kickstarter feels like it fulfills the promise of the web. Something that was just not possible without it and such a good cause.

Kickstarter.com is just awesome. Such a great idea.

Warren Buffet on investing to gain future purchasing power: http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2012...

Total losses for 2011 were $207M. But they are claiming next quarter might make a $15-35M profit on $510-550M in revs. Or a 3-6% margin.

Path says sorry: http://blog.path.com/post... -- good on them for universally nuking the data they lifted.

Actually, Craigslist is probably the best example. Rumored revenues in hundreds of millions minus Tiny staff + no VC = big bucks!

Maybe local is like spotting oil on the moon -- yes, it has value, but it's just too costly to extract with available human technology.
dhh
So given that Angie's List, Yelp, Living Social, and Groupon have all failed, are there anyone who can turn a profit on local ads?
dhh
RT @jaymeedwards: @dhh Pivot: To recognize your original offering was useless and transform into another equally useless one, accompanied by more funding.

Given that I've already set the rage tone for today. Here's another thing I fucking hate: The word "pivot". #getitoutofyoursystem

(Financials aside, I love Yelp the service -- use it constantly -- but these numbers are just bullshit).
dhh
What's even more awesome is that Yelp presumably has been losing money for 8 years straight. They were founded in '04. Took $56M in VC.
dhh
Also, I love the balls on the IPO crowd these days. 58M in revs, 7M in losses for 9 months. Yelp IPO asks for a cool $100,000,000!
