It's that time of year again, that's right the time of year where I annoy my cat by dressing her up for Halloween. Her nickname is Toothless because she reminds us so much of the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon. Indy is not as amused as I am!!!
I don't think either of mine would ever let me dress them up. I'm a little jealous.
- Katy S
Indy complains while I put her in it, but she never really fights me. And once she is in it, she doesn't complain at all. Just gives me the looks you see. :)

OMG! I'm trying not to LOL because Em is asleep but HER FACE!!!!!
- Headless Gnad Kicker
If she knew how to catch a mouse I'd be more worried ArMyZ, but I'm her food source and she has had many opportunities already and I'm still alive. She's too lazy to kill me, that is the secret to having a pet cat, make them lazy!!

"The sharing and re-sharing of videos on social sites, blogs e-mail, and other means has given rise to the phenomenon of viral videos—videos that become popular through internet sharing. In this paper we seek to better understand viral videos on YouTube by analyzing sharing and its relationship to video popularity using millions of YouTube videos. The socialness of a video is quantified by classifying the referrer sources for video views as social (e.g. an emailed link, Facebook referral) or non-social (e.g. a link from related videos). We find that viewership patterns of highly social videos are very different from less social videos."
- Amit Patel

"We also find that not all highly social videos become popular, and not all popular videos are highly social. By using our insights on viral videos we are able develop a method for ranking blogs and websites on their ability to spread viral videos."

"Every facet, every department of your mind, is to be programmed by you. And unless you assume your rightful responsibility, and begin to program your own mind, the world will program it for you."
Is that your answer to my question about HGTV?
- Clare Dibble
Before you can program your mind you need to deprogram it, and the best way to deprogram it is to get to the bottom of and master intellectual history -- the invented and artificial but influential ideological tape loops that control collective human behavior among all cultures, and about which most people are entirely unconscious. Fully conscious people create and control cultural and ideological systems and loops, they are not controlled by them.
- Sean McBride
Too much work. Just tell me the answer.
- sofarsoShawn
Thanks imabonehead :) I was being I guess, very lamely sarcastic to highlight that our minds "programming" or its deprogramming comes as a result of the world itself telling us how to. ~ In short, I'd like to thank this quote for telling me how to think, oh shit... kinda back where I started... ~ ~~> Russell's quote, with your 1st link, has much more explanatory relevance
- sofarsoShawn
Many years ago I had a self hypnosis tape and "Every facet, every dept of your mind etc etc...." were the opening words. I can't remember the title of the tape and have been trying to find it. I remembered the opening lines and typed them in when they came up i thought I had finally found the CD i was looking for. can any-one here help me with this?

I never heard this quote but believe it is a great one!

Congrats Ben! Totally agree with Jason. Our latest project wouldn't have become feasible without Ben -- I'm just so glad we managed to get a fraction of his time before he left! :)

Congratulations, Ben! You're joining an awesome team.

Congrats, you are now a "big company"! ;))))

I think there were a bunch of spam comments made to some 2009-era posts by FF employees. For some reason even after the spam is nuked, the post stays bumped.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Yes, I blocked a spammer that was bumping old posts about FF themes and what not.

Well, let's see this as an opportunity to raise a virtual glass to Ben and FriendFeed-that-was!
- Kevin Fox
It probably had something to do with the Tornado 2.2 release. I noticed Ben was the one who posted about the release on HN earlier. Edit: Or it could have just been a spammer. *shrugs*
- Jimminy
I don't think it had anything to do with the tornado release - a spammer bumped a bunch of Bret's old posts today.
- Ben Darnell

After trying the iPhone in France this year, I can't imagine why anyone would pick the iPhone over Android. Turn by turn navigation alone is worth the price of admission into the Android Army.
- Piaw Na
I don't think turn by turn nav is high on most people's priority list when looking for a smartphone.
- ronin
As for me, turn by turn nav is one reason I would not switch to an iPhone, ronin.
- Friar Will
I don't even turn Location Services on. Any kind of nav is a non-issue for me.

Anyone have the video somewhere other than Youtube? it's banned here in Turkey and I can't wait until we get home (next month) to watch it!!

This is superb. I just showed it to my 5 year old son who enjoys Lego and has already taken some great photos, including one or two of his toys. So now he has the seed of the idea that, in time, he could take multiple stills and put them together to make moving pictures. Thank you very much for posting it and giving me and him that opportunity. Maybe, he might use FriendFeed one day too!
- John W Lewis
I think they need to make a full stop-motion version of the Matrix in legos. Now THAT would be awesome. I wonder what bullet-time looks like in LEGO?

i'd pay to see the stop animation lego matrix, but not the sequels

What am I supposed to get when I click the 'recommend friends' link on someone's pop-up? Currently, the popup just goes away and I don't get directed anywhere else.
- FFing Enigma
Fred: yah, unfortunately, you can only recommend people who you are subscribed you and who are also subscribed back to you.
- Bret Taylor
Mark, I didn't submit a bug report since what is supposed to happen wasn't actually spelled out on the blog post or here; this might be the intended functionality... I hope not, but it's possible.
- FFing Enigma
Tina: it is supposed to pop up a dialog. Sorry for the trouble - we will look into it.
- Bret Taylor
At first I did not understand this, but now that I am checking it out, it is brilliant and addresses much of what we have complained about. NOW what will we complain about?
- Liza + = ?
Just to confirm Bret, the first image in the blog post is what the pop up is supposed to look like, right? Because that's nothing like what the ff.com/recommend page looks like....
- FFing Enigma
I notice that new subscriptions are automatically added to one's home feed. I consider that kind of a bug.
- Meryn Stol
Tina: yes, that is correct. The http://friendfeed.com/friends... page is just a list of people that we think could use some friend recommendations since they have few subscriptions. If you click on any of the "Recommend" links on that page, you will see the same, standard "Recommend friends" dialog.
- Bret Taylor
Where would we find recommendations that others suggest to us?
- Fred Yankowski
@Bret, who receive the recommandation see also who is the recommender?
- Roberto
Fred: You will receive an email as well as a notification on the top of your feed.
- Ross Miller
Roberto: yes, they see who recommended
- Bret Taylor
Bret, if I recommend friends to people who haven't signed in for a long time, will they get email? A lot of my bored friends are not active FF users I think. (quite logical)
- Meryn Stol
Not getting the pop-over when I click 'recommend' on the friendfeed.com/friends/recommend page either... FFox 3.0.12 if it's relevant.
- FFing Enigma
and can I see who has accepted my recommendation?
- Roberto
Roberto: You won't be notified if they accept/deny as the recommender.
- Ross Miller
Ross: Ah, it just appeared on my feed. Cool. (And thanks Meryn)
- Fred Yankowski
Meryn: yes, they will get an email with your recommendations
- Bret Taylor

Bret, I accidently just received an email with previous recommendations. I had already viewed them through the web-interface. But indeed, it's there. Email looks good too, as I expected of course. :)

If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily.
- Natsuki Seika
As I have lots of subscriptions the pop-up window is *really* slow and always has been since the new UI (same thing for amending friends lists). :-( I like the feature though, so I could make a new friends list of my most recommended users and use that each time for each user?

The “X-Men: First Class” sequel won’t bow until July 2014, but speculating about it is bound to be easier now that producer Bryan Singer has shared the flick’s title with fans. The James McAvoy- and Michael Fassbender-starrer will be called “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” The title comes from the ‘80s comic of the same name and is set in a dystopian future (which should be familiar to “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Mystique in the franchise.) “There will be elements that will be similar to the original ‘Days of Future Past,’ but there will also be some original elements,” Singer told CNN. “I can't really say more about it. I will only say that it's a very ambitious project and it definitely widens out the X-Men universe.” Singer confirmed that Matthew Vaughn will return to the director’s chair, but there’s still no word if anyone from “The Last Stand” will show up in the film. (According to Entertainment Weekly, the original comic features Kitty Pryde, the character...

"For most startups at this stage, the best predictor of success is the founders. So, the most important parts of the application for me are the questions about the founders' backgrounds and the most impressive things they've done. We're looking for evidence that the founders are smart, effective, and determined. If you can't go through your application and point to evidence for all three, that's bad. Don't be shy about telling us why you're good, but don't write a bunch of meaningless marketing speak either. I view the questions about the business largely as an intelligence test, but I'm always excited to read about a great idea. There should be no obvious holes in your plan--i.e., if you're taking on a huge competitor, have no apparent monetization plan, etc., you need to address it. It's very rare that I read about a brand new idea (and it's likely the startup will change or refine ideas), so I'm looking for deep insights I haven't heard heard or thought of before."

You think one of these bad boys will work in a CPAP machine to auto-copy data to a server over wifi?
- Josh Haley
Hey Josh, so though it looks like an SD card it's not a data storage device with wifi (like the Eye-Fi). It's actually a computer and wifi in a card, and will only work with devices specifically intended for use with it. So short answer is no, it won't work in existing SD-card slots on CPAP machines, but future CPAP machines would be a lot better if they used Imps for realtime monitoring from distant locations instead of SD cards for post-sleep analytics.
