"Not everything that happens via social media tools requires a social media-based response. Sometimes the best course of action when you find your brand under fire is to catch your breath and consider what the core issue is and respond accordingly. That might be through social media channels - they certainly do increase the reach of your message - or it might be through the traditional media. But know what sort of issue you’re responding to first and you’ll be in a much better position."

"Everybody’s a scanner It’s one thing if you’re writing a blog with a devoted following. But a corporate, nonprofit or e-commerce website doesn’t come with a readymade group of friends. If users can’t immediately find what they’re looking for, they move on. Web users tend to scan information rather than reading it closely. One reason is physiological. Research—by Nielsen, Stanford University/The Poynter Institute and others—has shown that reading pixels on a screen makes eyes work harder than reading ink on paper. Another impetus for scanning, I believe, is the web’s seemingly limitless content. It’s like being unable to enjoy yourself at a party because you might be having a better time at someone else’s house. Add the growing mania for speed (“This #%&* site is taking 20 seconds to load!”), and it’s clear that web writing has to pick up the pace."

"Canada's National Post newspaper began using two-dimensional (2D) bar codes this week to link newspaper articles to video and other content. The link from paper to the Web is made possible through a free downloadable mobile app for smartphones from Scanbuy, N.Y. Directions on nationalpost.com point visitors to getscanlife.com. When the camera on the phone takes a picture of the bar code, the application reads the embedded information in the code and triggers a Web browser to open, which searches the Internet for the URL and serves up the page on the phone." "Anyhow. Take it as you will, but remember that the web is not you and it’s not me. The web is just a braindead platform for moving information around, but it’s not your actual friends. And, while it’s insanely understandable to tire of all the horseshit and look-at-me stuff, I must advise you: never miss an opportunity to meet the faces behind your favorite avatars. Especially when they’re all in one place? Wow."

"These days I will look for ten 1% lifts in conversion before one 10% magic bullet; in reality there probably aren’t a lot of 10% lifts left after the first handful. Get into the groove of turning knobs a little at a time, learning, and iterating;"

"Last December, seeking to enhance sales, he offered free shipping and promoted it three ways. As a result, he said, a direct marketing mailing cost $15,000 and brought in 200 new customers; a billboard ad cost $7,500 and won 300 new customers; and tweeting the promotion on Twitter attracted 1,800 new customers."

Inherent value of different forms and channels are rearing their ugly head. Talked about this briefly in the Distributed Audiences post on OTD: yes, a link from Twitter and a link from a blog are two different things b/c people use those channels differently. ^JRL

Good perspective on why Twitter turned down the Facebook deal. Conversely, Facebook is left with a challenging question about their insular habits. How valuable is content to a community when closed boundaries exist?

This is an interesting move. Certainly a popular market that is being catered to on the web, content-wise. However, this is an unique approach in the web video market. Mainstream TV isn't putting a stake in the ground and Gary is beating them to the punch, again.
