The song is actually called Smiling, not Smile, but this is the fattest sounding version of the tune in YouTubeLand. Enjoy, but skank responsibly. Or not. :D

Truly sad day today. One of the last founding members of the Skatalites (dating back to the late 1950's) has died today at the age of 80. They have truly changed the landscape of music as we know it in many ways, both directly and indirrectly. Rest in Peace. :(

I wish I knew more about who this is. He probably deserves at least some of the attention that the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch is getting today.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
He was the bass player for the Skatalites, who originated ska in the late 50's/early 60's and basically put Jamaican music and reggae on the world map, as they gained a sizable following in England and elsewhere with the mod / rudeboy / skinhead movement.

They were also the house band for the Studio One record label throughout the 60's and early to mid 70's, and thus spearheaded many of the musical changes and innovations that ran from ska to rocksteady, to DJ toasting, to early reggae and dub.

Broasted for sure! I remember the diner at Fairfax and Wilshire had broasted chicken until they closed down. That is still my favorite diner. It's still there, but it's only used for shooting movies in. I miss the 2 piece $1.99 special. :(

Well shit, I've never heard this before... here goes! Miles live in Osaka Japan. 1976. This was his last recorded album until his comeback in 1981.

Right off the bat: it's funk. Pretty straightforward so far rhythmically and structurally. We'll see how long that holds up. :)

11 minutes into it and it sounds a bit more like what he was doing on Bitches Brew, but much much denser. There's a crazy metal-inflected guitar solo that just started. It's all quite palatable.
