Apple has ordered the developer of the iPhone Wobble application to remove the words "boobs" and "booty" from his publicity, despite selling more than 20,000 copies of the epically pointless app. - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009...
This seems to be going a little too far and in my opinion Apple will not be able to police the app store at this level. How many fans will now create their own YouTube videos to show the real intention of the app.
- David Clements
a bit too controlling. they want to tell other companies how to market their product?
- Cee Bee
"As the end of January 2009 draws near, there’s still no sign of push notifications. Reports at the end of September said that all support for the system was pulled from beta versions of the iPhone Software Development Kit for the then-forthcoming iPhone 2.1 update. So what happened? "

"A software engineer who wrote what he calls a "terrible" and "crap" app in less time than it typically takes to eat lunch has since watched it shoot to the top of Apple's App Store, where it's now generating over $200 an hour despite being a free download."
- Patrick Jordan
It it really great that more and more developers are providing us with specific numbers around different revenue models. I hadn't realized that an app could make 5k a day in ad revenue. And this presumably is from people just checking out the app and not from daily use.
- David Clements
I think the whole subject of App Store price models and success strategies is pretty fascinating (I may be a bit of a sad bastard as it goes) - have you checked out the Mobile Orchard site? Very good analysis on these sort of subjects: http://www.mobileorchard.com/
- Patrick Jordan
Yeah mobile orchards stuff is great.... I haven't checked out that PDF yet but intend to. I really want someone to do an analysis of how many apps are still in active development. Currently we have 15k apps on the store but how many are abandoned by developers that realized that Gold rush was over.
- David Clements
@ David - you feel like momentum is slowing down then?
- Patrick Jordan
I think there is definitely opportunity but it appears that some form of external marketing is becoming more and more necessary. At the beginning it looked like if I cranked out enough, decent apps then I could sustain myself simply by continuing to update my applications. My data is showing a downward trend on this approach. And as such you are either going viral or you are going to converge down to zero. All that being said I am still learning and experimenting.
- David Clements
@ David - are you an iPhone dev yourself then?
- Patrick Jordan
crapware can only be a flash in the pan, not sustainable. having said that, given th install base, and based on basic laws of numbers, one can make a lot of money in a very short period of time tapping the right demographic. definitely a biz opportunity for advertisers wanting to get a message across in the form of short lived apps or apps with content.
- Pascal Bouvier
@ Pascal - I'm not sure whether crapware will be just a flash in the pan. I thought one of the comparisons that the young developer High Gloss made in the link above was a valid one - comparing the App Store to the pop music charts. IMO, there is tons of shite music that hits the top of the charts and makes serious money ...
- Patrick Jordan
@Patrick Yeah I am a developer. Both trying the indie thing and contracting for others.
- David Clements
@ David - excellent. Any apps you are able to name in here?
- Patrick Jordan
I think I saw on twitter he peaked at $200 an hour, and dropped down to $50 an hour. Still pretty good for 20 mins work. ;-) Read the reviews though - it's blowing up people's speakers.
- Tim
@Patrick Lots of apps. Chatterbox a paper fortune teller, WristPop Coin Toss, Origami Crane and XMas Tree, SUZU Alarm Clock and Meditation Timer, Thumb Piano and please don't excommunicate me for this one..... IBurp on Your Fart Ahhhhh....
- David Clements
@ David - cool - need to have a look at some of those ...
- Patrick Jordan
Yeah please do... Shoot me an email at promo at gidigo dot com and I'll hook you up with whatever you want to check out.
- David Clements
Just sent them to you.... How do you respond so quickly from FF. Is there an email notification?
- David Clements
@ David - thank you - I just check back on the Me > Comments + Likes area relatively often if I know I'm in a conversation that might get updated frequently ...

It works fine, but the reports look like images from the pages you see when you access Analytics with your browser. You need to zoom in to actually read the reports. There is another app called myAnalytics (not free) that shows you less information, but it's easily readable.
- Peter van Teeseling
Argh. Why would this app not be available in Canada?

I've used Posterous on several occasions. It is my blogging platform from Hacker Cons. Since the con networks are so hostile it provides a method of blogging the event without exposing my primary blogs. It works great. http://knowthenetwork.posterous.com/
- Keith - @tsudo
When I first used it a few months ago, I decided to see if I could create an account and post an article. The thing is I did this BEFORE I ever went to posterous.com. These guys have produced a lovely simple blogging platform. - A Fan :)
- Dave Pook
That was a piece of cake. Now, let's see if I find it useful.
- Kenley Neufeld
I like that I can send a movie off my Blackberry Bold and have a place to not only display it but have the ability to post words to go along with it. Cool.I tried posting a movie to Flickr in much the same way (via email) and it wouldn't take.
- Wayne Schulz
I keep flip-flopping between this and Tumblr. I love Tumblr's bookmarklet, and don't really have as much of a need to post from email (I'm in a browser anyway, why not use it?).
- Lindsay
yeah, i know what your saying Lindsay - i just love the autoforwarding to my main wordpress blog from Posterous... works remarkably well.
- Zee.
How embarrassing. I've been a member since June and completely forgot. Not even 60 yet and already senile.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
this is good. no registration, no account, no login! just send email for blogging!
- Wyattblogger
If you're not on this site, you need to be.
- Outsanity
I like it. I've been using it to post music that I enjoy nudging people about.
- Niklas Pivic
By posting it on here, you've apparently killed it - "Posterous is having a beer at the moment, but we'll be right back. No, really. Try hitting reload in about 5 minutes. Don't worry, we're hard at work getting posterous back in order soon."
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
Sometimes I wish it was less "guide" and more guiding principle.

*sigh* I want to be both. FF wouldn't be any fun if I were just finding stuff to put in here but not enjoying the content anyone else was sharing.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm so busy trying to plan how to be interesting, I don't have time to be interested. Consequently, the planning also gets in the way of actually being interesting.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
I honestly think the second becomes easier if you pay attention to the first. If you care about what others are saying, you'll find all sorts of interesting places for input.
- Steve Spalding
@chris Heck yea, a lot of hard work goes into trying to be consistently interesting.
- Steve Spalding
It's a basic concept. Everyone's favorite topic is themself. So, when involved in conversation, if all you do is ask open-ended questions based on the content of what the other person is saying, the other person will regard you as a great conversationalist, even though you have said nothing. Try it! All great salespeople know this concept cold.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
my momma always said 'interested people are interesting'.
- Morgan Haley
Really Mark, all you have to do is ask open-ended questions? That's so interesting. :D Nah, you're definitely right, I think the NLP set have that as part of their canon as well.
- Steve Spalding
I am totally with you on this. I really hope that Apple finds a way to manage this better. Today it is a dozen flag apps but tomorrow it could easily be 100. And allowing all of them to show up on the store at the same time really inhibit the customer experience.
- David Clements
Exactly. I think this is another example of not only 'gaming' the App Store system (if your 'series' of apps covers a whole page or more in a particular category) but also obviously gaming users to buy 25 individual apps that all really just do one thing ...
- Patrick Jordan
I like the sentiment here however I think you might be expecting too much from Iphone App Store Customers. The market will really decide these things and if everyone wants to check out a farting app then there is some value in making one.
- David Clements
"The big news isn't the aluminum unibody construction—it's that the portable rig is getting a slimmer, more efficient battery. But, and this is a big (unconfirmed) but, the battery will apparently be inaccessible, a la the iPhone and iPod."
- David Bisset (sn)

For awhile there, I was disappointed that there wasn't a 17" unibody when I bought my first MacBook Pro but now I think 17" would be too big. I'd rather have the 15" and then spend money on a good monitor to hook it up to when I need the extra real estate.
- Akiva Moskovitz
If Apple can claim that the battery will last 24 hours (20 hours in real world use), then I don't think that'd be a bad thing.
- Rom Feria
I hope this "can't switch battery" thing doesn't become a trend. Bad enough the iPods and iPhones have it.
- David Bisset (sn)
If they make a battery that can last 24 hours, then it is well worth it. My Powerbook G4 lasts about 2 hours on the battery. That would be a big improvement.
- Shawn Hickman
can you put the word Rumor in big fat letters in front of the title? I clicked the site, thinking that it was official.
- Vincent van Wylick
and FriendFeed for in-between cases? A quick movie/picture link, for instance. Or something mid-size, e.g., longer than 140 characters but shorter than 2000 words.
- Bora Zivkovic
What about when to comment vs. when to write your own post?
- mikepk
FriendFeed for in-between cases where the original observation is fairly pithy, but may be found worthy of comment/conversation/development. Or where it would be too long for twitter but off-topic for your blog.
- Tegan Dowling
I think the same rules apply. If you have to go in depth you make your own post and reference the inspiration.
- MarkCarras
I don't think FriendFeed is for in-between cases. I think FF is a totally different animal altogether. I'm still thinking on that one...
- Daniel Miessler
Let's say that FF is also, among other uses, for in-between cases?
- Bora Zivkovic
Most problems seem to arise when installing the Delta upgrade downloaded from Software Update: Numerous users found that update to be problematic, but the full Combo update available from Apple's website ran smoothly.

The update seemed to have fried TweetDeck. Nothing happened when the app starts up. But a clean delete with AppCleaner and then a reinstall works fine again.

After updating, I can actually run Call of Duty 4 in single player mode. It would crash on launching before. I still have a semi-dead DVD drive from a previous update (it won't read PC-formatted cds).

Ran S/W Update and downloaded OS 10.5.6, Camino 1.6.6 and Firefox 3,0.5, plus a bunch of videos via my friend's wifi, then put my MB to sleep and rode home. The install/restart barely took 8 minutes or so. All seems to be fine as usual, maybe even a bit snappier!

Update: as of now, my blackbook has gone 17 days, 3 hours of run-time without any issues or crashes, with the 10.5.6 update.

OpenClip works by looking into the Documents folder of other applications to get their pastes. Applications are allowed to write all they want to their own Documents directory (for copy), so no foul there. Applications are also allowed to read outside their sandbox into the Documents directories for other apps (for paste), so no foul there.

"As you can see in the video, the application adds ultra-realistic steam to your screen when you blow on the microphone. After that you can use your fingers to clean it, causing squeaky sounds, condensation, and drops that get affected by the orientation of the phone, like it would happen in real life."
