"You can use a bit of string attached to the camera and a loop that you put your foot through, then you pull the camera up so the string is tight... this gives you good stabilization. You can also use the self timer so that you minimise the shake from pressing the shutter button. You should also probably invest in a tripod. I used a very very basic Hama one for years and it only cost me £15 ... Perfect for someone who is starting up and doesn't want to spend a huge amount of money.
