Not gonna happen on my end, Mark. I'm hopping into beta for DMs and to test things people post, but feeding from the normal interface. Real-time flow is not my cup of tea, it's why I didn't use realtime before...

"LOS ALAMITOS, — The mayor of a small Orange County city says he will resign after being criticized for sharing an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title "No Easter egg hunt this year." Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose issued a statement Thursday saying he is sorry and will step down as mayor at the City Council meeting on March 2. Grose came under fire for sending the picture to what he called "a small group of friends." One of the recipients, a local businesswoman and city volunteer, publicly scolded the mayor for his actions. Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city."

Man, people really can't help themselves, can they? Looking forward to 30 years from now when incidents like this are a memory.
- Hutch Carpenter
Attention to my small group of friends: Yeah, I've told a racist joke now and again, being a polack, I've also been the butt of them, but please, for bob's sake don't send me shit like this! Especially if you have a high profile job of leadership. You can't trust me to keep it secret.
- Matthew DeVries
no shortage a short minded racists in OC. good riddance.
- sean percival
i actually got into an argument with a few at work this morning over this. They saw absolutely nothing wrong with this and felt that this mayor should not lose his job over this. Needless to say that the discussion did not last long. Its easy for me to win an argument when there is blatant ignorance involved.
- Carlos Ayala
For god sakes people, don't email anything you won't what on the national news...God!
- John Flynn
way to try and downplay one's ignorance and stupidity. that kind of stuff isn't in "poor taste," it's flat out racist! racism is much more complex and extreme than a matter of one's taste. there's been a lot of things going down in cali lately with regard to the way many in the GOP are handling their business. their politics seemed to have become more extreme and/or shameless, if not reckless
- Cee Bee
I don't think racism is the right word for this, but the words stupidity and ignorance sure don't go far enough.
- Anthony Citrano
There are degrees of racism, but I'd still call this racism.
- Kevin Fox
My favorite part, from an AP story: "Grose . . . said he was unaware of the racial stereotype that black people like watermelons." Wow, what an unfortunate coincidence that he just HAPPENED to photoshop in Watermelons.
- John Craft
Yeah, racism is the right word for this.
- vicster
i don't know man, i disagree that it's not racism. an image of watermelons on the white house lawn conjures up images from an era when that kind of stuff was commonplace and hardly meant as a way to honour the people who were subjects of that very imagery. some people still want to believe it's ok or even funny in a benign way to pull that shit nowadays, but would those people be so quick to send that email to the NAACP instead of what they think is their protected group of peers?
- Cee Bee
@John It was just an unfortunate coincidence! ;)
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Conjuring up images of racism in others is not the same as racism. I don't think it's benign and I don't think it's funny (except to laugh at this idiot.) What I'm saying is that joking about - or even perpetuating - a particular ethnic or racial stereotype is not res ipsa loquitur racism.
- Anthony Citrano
I'm pretty sure that perpetuating a racial stereotype is in fact by definition racism.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I agree with Tina. You don't have to provide original, unique content for it to constitute racism. A racially motivated derogatory act is racism whether the act is one of content creation or of dissemination.
- Kevin Fox
Define it however you wish, I was just saying it does not meet mine.
- Anthony Citrano
It appears that the actual definition and the usage of the word racism is very much a hot topic. I was raised to believe that committing an act of racism is to actively discriminate against an individual or group based on their race and/or racial stereotypes attributed to that race. It appears that the more modern definition is broader, however, and includes the perpetuation of racial stereotypes.
- Jeanette Bosman
"What I'm saying is that joking about a particular ethnic or racial stereotype is not res ipsa loquitur racism." - If you're poking fun at the stereotype, perhaps. But I grew up in the rural South, and creating and forwarding an image like that "innocently" is par for the course in Mississippi, Alabama, etc.
- John Craft
I look at it this way, Anthony. If I'm having dinner with someone and they spend the entire night saying black people like fried chicken and water melon, Irish people are drunks, Gypsies are all out to cheat you, Italians are all mobsters, etc., I am without doubt going to think that person is a racist, based purely on the fact that they are perpetuating racial stereotypes.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
If we're seriously not willing to acknowledge this is racism, then 30 years is no where near long enough for this kind of crap to go away.
- Victor Ganata
Anthony, what's your definition of racism? In your view can racism be "passive" like this, or must it be "active" - i.e. discrimination?
- John Craft
so I wonder who all of the other people on the distribution list of this email were that didn't do anything about it.
- Thomas Hawk
But Tina - those are *stereotypes* - those do not imply the *inferiority* of one ethnicity. Liking fried chicken does not, prima facie, make you inferior to those who do not like fried chicken. Likewise, watermelon-dislikers are not, prima facie, superior to watermelon-likers. Perpetuating mythology, however stupid, doesn't automatically mean you think the group is inferior. Believing a group is inferior *because* of their lineage is racism. Believing (or joking) that they prefer a certain food is not.
- Anthony Citrano
Which is to say, Tina, I agree that your hypothetical dinner guests are idiots. But I don't think - based on the evening banter you've described - I'd define them as racists. (Although they may be..)
- Anthony Citrano
@John - in my mind, racism is believing that a certain ethnic or racial group are inferior in some way, based purely on their lineage.
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, I think it's still racist to believe that all black people play basketball really well, or that all Asians are really good at math. It's the act of generalizing to a population based on nothing but appearance that's offensive, and when it's entrenched as a society-wide belief, it's oppressive even though at first glance it may look complimentary.
- Victor Ganata
Perhaps think of it this way: If you see a human and believe a certain thing about this human soley because of the ethnic heritage of this human, you are a racist.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I don't think ANYONE is implying that what this man did wasn't racially motivated. The debate is about the definition of the word racism, and what kind of act the word implies. I believe (and others have as well) that this particular act is and example of "racial stereotyping" not "racism" which I define as incorporating a belief that a specific race is inferior to another. As Anthony has stated, a perceived affinity for watermelon does not label one as inferior.
- Jeanette Bosman
Just to be clear, I also believe that racial stereotyping is just as harmful as racism, but I do believe the two acts to be differently defined.
- Jeanette Bosman
Dude, if "the pedantic parsing of words is not at all impressive to" you, then feel free not to comment on it. That is what the bulk of this conversation has been about. If you want to rant about how terrible racism is, feel free, but don't suffer under the impression that you'll be saying anything that hasn't already been said thousands of times. YES, racism sucks, its terrible, I hope to see a day when it no longer plagues our society... blah blah blah. Tell me something new.
- Jeanette Bosman
I'm trying to think how best to put this, Anthony, so I'm likely to not get it right and someone else please feel free to step in. The watermelon/fried chicken thing doesn't actually *mean* anything derogatory. However, there was a time (quite recent) where it was used to imply things, a code of sorts. Those stereotypes were used *in conjunction with others* such as laziness,...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I happen to enjoy debating the definition of the word because it gets people to really think about what they are saying and what they are meaning and how the two might contrast. We're having fun being all intellectual and stuff, don't rain on our parade just because you don't find it interesting.
- Jeanette Bosman
Watermelon/fried chicken = a socioeconomic knock on African Americans... How is that not derogatory?
- Brandon
"I think you're wrong. If you try to tell me why you might not be wrong I won't tolerate hearing it and will berate you for trying to say it. If you criticize me for that I will tell you that I can say whatever I please and I pass judgment on you for trying to imply that I can't." Wow...
- Kevin Fox
<3 Jeanette and Kevin :) (EDIT: different kinds of <3 for the two of you. sheesh.)
- Tudor Bosman
Wait, did he just discriminate against me because of my beliefs? :P
- Jeanette Bosman
OOOOH MY GOOOOD! What a jerk!!! unbelievable!!
- Susan Beebe
Fine, let's say for the purpose of discussion there really is a difference between racism and racial stereotyping. What do you believe is the practical consequence of this difference?
- Victor Ganata
Ah, racism is alive and well in America.
- Blake Caldwell
I dunno, Blake. Perhaps discussing it, even at this vitriolic level, is a step down the path of healing?
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I stand with Jeanette (and not only because I'm going to marry her in 5 months...) Racism is actively discriminating against a person or group based on race, and should be against the law. Perpetuating racial stereotypes is idiotic and I won't associate with people who do, but it's an exercise of free speech. You're free to believe anything you want and talk about it until it comes to actions -- preferring to hire white people instead of black people just because of their race, for example.
- Tudor Bosman
But this is all nitpicking. The mayor of Los Alamitos is a bigoted f*cktard, regardless of the result of a debate over a dictionary definition :)
- Tudor Bosman
What you say, Tudor, rings true, however, it also stands to resign that this mayor violated the public trust by emailing the offensive picture and rightly was forced to resign.
- Alex Scoble
Damn, you were too quick on the draw with your second statement.
- Alex Scoble
No one is saying it isn't free speech, Tudor. Of course it is: Americans have the right to say whatever stupid thing that crosses their mind (yes, aware of fire in a theater exceptions all, thank you). But that doesn't mean those things they say aren't racist or sexist just because they don't act on them. That' be like saying a man who says "All women should stay at home barefoot and pregnant" isn't actually a sexist unless he *makes* women stay at home barefoot and pregnant.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Tina: What if he just forwards a photo of Sara Palin, barefoot and pregnant?
- Kevin Fox
Screw the dictionary definition. I want to know what you think the practical upshot of acknowledging the difference is. Fine, racial stereotyping is free speech. But so is racism to a degree. The Klan, for example, has the lawful right to march in the streets provided they obtain the proper permits. But this does not get us any closer to solving the problem of race in America.
- Victor Ganata
@ Victor, practical consequence... hmm, I think in general there is a practical consequence for calling anything by its specific name. That is sort of what words and language are for - to convey an image or a feeling or an idea - and I like to do so as carefully, specifically, and descriptively as possible. It is especially wise to do so when discussing hot-button topics such as this one.
- Jeanette Bosman
I'll say it: Racism isn't the problem. The *consequences* of racism are why racism is bad. Racial stereotypes foster racism and racism fosters discriminatory behavior, and the boundaries between each of these steps is contestable and blurry, so what's the point of making a distinction?
- Kevin Fox
This has become the Happy Hour topic on FF. In summary... Mayor resigns. Racism bad. Scott Bourne needs a vacation. Chris and Jeanette need a drink. Happy weekend everyone!
- Eric Thompson
Of course, word definitions evolve and change as surely as modern society changes their beliefs. This is how new languages are born, and also the reason why British English sounds different than American English.
- Jeanette Bosman
I mean, am I taking something for granted when I find it obvious that thoughts facilitate actions? To flip it around a little, if it's OK to think these things, why is it not OK to act on them? What is it, then, that prevents you from taking your thoughts to their final conclusions, or at least stops you from acting on those conclusions?
- Victor Ganata
The other thing is that if you invoke a symbol, you pull down the baggage associated with that symbol. While I could, with clear conscience, draw a swastika and claim that I'm expressing a Buddhist belief and nothing else, I think it would be ridiculous for me to expect that no one would find it offensive in the context of Western civilization. That symbol is weighed down with history now. So it's the same thing, really, when you're talking about watermelons and monkeys in the context of race.
- Victor Ganata
Jeanette, I'm not arguing the nature of language, nor the importance of precision. I'm saying, in the context of the history of racism, what difference does it make if, in the end, whatever you call it, a person ends up applying an unwanted generalization onto another individual? To me, it is that act itself that is oppressive, and to me, it is from that act that the history of racism arises as a natural consequence.
- Victor Ganata
Chris, I agree that the monkey brouhaha is a lot more equivocal, but I still stand by the idea that you end up owning the baggage attached to a symbol whether you want to or not. Communication is never unilateral.
- Victor Ganata
Chris, that's fair. Context is important. Yes, not everyone agrees that it's harmless even in the comedy, but certainly it's seen as more acceptable than just randomly accosting someone with a stereotype on the street or in their inbox. But to me, the difference seems to be in the effect, rather than in the nature of the behavior itself. It's really the same behavior, it's just that the context is different, and that mitigates its effects.
- Victor Ganata
To me, ethnic comedy is still racist, it's just not as bad. Mostly because it's coming from someone whom you shouldn't be expected to take seriously.
- Victor Ganata

Victor: If I'm understanding your question correctly, I believe I already addressed this waaaaay further up in this thread. To quote myself: "Just to be clear, I also believe that racial stereotyping is just as harmful as racism, but I do believe the two acts to be differently defined." I agree that both acts are oppressive, and both acts perpetuate the view that we are all SO different from each other > which creates the us/them mentality > which is where all bigotry comes from.
- Jeanette Bosman
Not hiding, Scott. Stick to the bird slideshows. They seem more in keeping with your intellect.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
@Tina - you put it well, and I absolutely hear you. @Jeanette - exactly! if we are just going to wave our hands and say ‘let's nevermind what words mean’ then why bother communicating. And finally, where's Robin when we need him, so he can call us all racists (or tell us we're not qualified to discuss it)?
- Anthony Citrano
Wow, Scott. Looking through your comments and posts you and I have very similar ideologies, yet the way you express them and treat others alienates you from even those people 'on your side'. I don't know if you're interested in advancing the causes you believe in but I hope not because the way you espouse opinions seems to drive everyone away. This isn't meant as an attack, but rather...

Scott - then why are you contributing your opinion, since clearly you are not looking to communicate or open to discussions. What is calling people out going to achieve? Baffling.

Scott: What we have here is a contested concept of the term 'racism'. People in this thread are using more specific terms like 'racial intolerance' to deepen the discussion of the subject to more than just blanket "he's a racist, good riddance" kneejerkery, instead delving into issues like motivation and intent, ideally to bring the discussion on how to help fix the problem of racial...

I understand where you are coming from but defensive exchanges mostly end by resorting to personal attacks and derails the topic at hand. I admire your passion and think you CAN do good even if you don't think you are good at this. :) BTW this has nothing to do with being cool or not, it's about basic human interactions, ScottBourne. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Scott - have you ever wondered why some people become the way they are, or think the way the do? Just because people have differing opinions or definition of racism, it doesn't mean they are racist... No one is faulting you for how you feel, I think it has more to do with your communication methods. Don't you want to understand WHY the feel that way in order to reach deep down and solve the problem from the root?
- Mona Nomura
Names shouldn't matter when you're engaged in discussions... especially on the Internet. Perhaps going into every thread and interacting with people imagining yourself at a Halloween cocktail party, may help? Pre-judging could be the reason you come off more hostile towards some, which more often times than not results to messy conversations.
- Mona Nomura
@Scott: You're making snap judgments about the quality and worth of people based on highly superficial data about them (namely that they use the words 'racial intolerance' when you use the word 'racism'). Because you're doing it at an individual level you think it's justifiable but it's just as unacceptable as refusing to listen to someone based on the color of their skin.
- Kevin Fox
To be fair, Kevin, the FF community is a little different from other sites and services. A lot of other places I've noticed you must start off defensive otherwise you are not taken seriously. I think this thread is a great chance for Scott to see why FF is a great place, among other things (ie: judging based on color of skin)
- Mona Nomura
Scott -- I am confused -- who is that you think is hiding here?
- Brian Sullivan
Scott: "basic human interactions seem impossible to me when you can use a fake name" This is ironic, since when you don't know who the person is you have to judge them by their words rather than your own prejudices. Do you see me differently than Jay because I use my real name and my real feeds? How is that not prejudiced? I don't know who Mona is in the 'real world' or even if that's...
- Kevin Fox
Scott - there are many circumstances and reasons behind people using aliases. Especially for those that do not want to be Googled. FF indexes your activities... And please don't think we are ganging up on you. At least I'm not, I'm just trying to understand.
- Mona Nomura
Scott - Kevin does have a valid point. How is you judging people by their handles (or aliases) any different from racists judging people by their skin colors?
- Mona Nomura
Scott -- a quick check shows Oldengrey (Jay)= Jay Tannenbaum Pacific Ave & Presidio Ave -- unless that is not real as well. There are others in this thread whose pseudonyms are much more obscuring.
- Brian Sullivan
Scott: I'm sorry that you see my words, as one of the more pragmatic participants in this discussion, as attacking you. Since any further conversation on the subject will, by your admission, only be seen as an attack and because it's clear that it won't better the situation, I'll leave you and your rejection to yourself. Good day, sir.
- Kevin Fox
I have to conclude that ScottBourne is fake. No one can be that close minded, right? I have seriously never encountered anyone who is so blatantly close minded (and proud of it!) Isn't it exactly this kind of attitude that is behind all forms of bigotry? If you're not with me, you're against me! Kevin, your analogy to the communist era witch hunts is spot-on.
- Jeanette Bosman
What is your definition of racism, Scott? Maybe we should start there... I am not giving up btw. Your passion is extremely admirable but racism is not black and white - literally.
- Mona Nomura
@Chris somehow I did... Curious... And no, Mona and Scott are responding to each other.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
It's nice to see that Chris is back on the Pequod again. It's so reassuring seeing that people can't let shit go.
- Matthew DeVries
Wow, don't my morning posts about McCarthyism look prescient. Shall we channel in the late, great gentlewoman from Maine?
- Anthony Citrano
I truly hope people (specifically the ones I can not see) are not resorting to personal attacks. Scott? We are conversing fine. I'm here and I am interested in what you have to say.
- Mona Nomura
We seem to be on the same page :) Now my question to you is: do you think you may be doing something similar judging someone based on their Internet nicknames? Specifically, treating them as if they are less than human, when in fact there is a person sitting behind the computer screen, typing out words. Cartoon? I thought this was over the picture of watermelons across the White House lawn -- unless you are referring to the NY Post cartoon from a week ago...
- Mona Nomura
@Mona, to be fair, I think that "oldengray (jay)" is the only one he doesn't like because of his user name - and they seem to have some sort of history? In my case, I'm not exactly sure why he blocked me. I can't tell if it's because he doesn't understand the point I was trying to make or because word definitions really get him all hot and bothered. Maybe he just doesn't like being argued with as passionately as he argues.
- Jeanette Bosman
Oh, ok - I was under the impression perhaps it was with everyone that used handles. My mistake. Like I said, I admire Scott's passion greatly and it's refreshing since we live in a world that needs more empathy. @Scott - I hope I didn't offend you or think I am judging you. I am just trying to understand you and along the way, perhaps open your mind a little towards people on the Internet. :) Anyway, I have to go. My beau awaits. (Edward from Twilight - don't judge me, please!)
- Mona Nomura
I'll gladly take a block since Scott seems to be handing them out like water. I find it sad that a perfectly good thread/discussion was hijacked by his antics.
- Got Love For DB™?
Well where do you think racism comes from? What do you think makes people judge others based upon the color of their skins? And there is no need to apologize, Scott! I just wanted to clarify to make sure we were on the same page. :)
- Mona Nomura
Where are all your middle names!!?? And I thought I knew who you people were!?!! *runs with arms flailing behind him into the forest*
- AJ Kohn
@Tina: I like that! Mine is a heavily guarded secret! :) In other news, while the semantics behind the definition and application of racism are deserving of attention I'd like to ensure we steer this group to the light. (Look for it!) This guy is a shit-for-brains moron for forwarding something that was clearly racially charged. Agreed?
- AJ Kohn
@Chris: You've been on fire this last week my friend!
- AJ Kohn
How does Scott even know who's using real names? Mona could be a "Lisa" in real life; Chris a "Benjamin", etc etc etc.
- Andrew C
@Mark, I can't be certain, but I think it may have been your comment that discussing our differing opinions on racism, "even at this vitriolic level, is a step down the path of healing" (to clumsily paraphrase you). Clearly, that put you in the racist camp.
- Jeanette Bosman
@Andrew: Exactly, hence my middle name missive.
- AJ Kohn
Ahhh... Hadn't thought of that. Well, I'm in good company, nonetheless. Hiding behind my real name, and all...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Oh yes, the cartoon thread! That was a barrel of laughs. What is with the whole blocking thing anyway? Why in the world would you want to limit your view and scope of the world that way? Maybe if, over a period of months, you thought to yourself "hey, this person just never says anything valuable and they just get me riled up for no reason" maybe then I could see the advantage to blocking someone. But really? After a couple of heated exchanges? Wow, how boring do you want your life to be?
- Jeanette Bosman
I agree, Jeanette. I subscribe to a number of people because they have opposing views. The discussions help me focus and learn. I think some people subscribe to me for the same reason. If you only listen to people who agree with you then you will die of atrophy in your own echo chamber.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Jeanette, very well said. But that's how most people are, sadly.
- Anthony Citrano
Opposing views are good as long as they are value added. If someone has an opposing view because they have been indoctrinated by whatever cult and are just spouting off stuff that has no basis in reality, then they just aren't worth listening to. And yes, I'm sure that i vaguely resemble this at times, but trust me that there's always thought behind my madness.
- Alex Scoble
I think my brother blocked you because he thought you were being a troll. Also if you removed all your comments in a thread and walked away, that would have gotten you blocked by him too.
- Alex Scoble
He's done that last one at least 5 times. (not to say he isn't also a creepy trolly stalker, not that reading his feed will tell you, he deletes his messes after creating them)

I didn't say that you'd agree that he was right for blocking you, but that's why he blocked you. Just sayin'.
- Alex Scoble
I only block people who are unreasonable, consistently rude and nasty to me (and others) w/out being provoked.
- Mona Nomura
Chris, I will paypal you $100 if you can go a year without saying Mona, Scoble, Blocked. Why do you keep revisiting, and rebringing up the issue, like every 2 weeks, it's your version of a menstrual cycle
- Matthew DeVries
I think you'd need to give Chris something that he needs to get him to do that, Matthew.
- Alex Scoble
I think I'd need to give him the cure to poison he just drank, talking about your brother and Mona blocking him is like his lifeblood, he's like Gollem with it.

Yep, Chris. You definitely need some punishment.

it has to do with the fact that I don't scream about the Holocaust at a BBQ because I don't like the fact they aren't using Kosher meat. it has to do with relevance. some ass and his watermelon card is meant to distract from the real oppression going on in politics. nothing new... @Neill, that's great. You just got us to the 6th continent. I highly doubt we can hit 7 as there surely can't be someone from Antarctica that FriendFeeds.

The Antarctica challenge: OK, here's the plan: we need to contact Eli Duke (http://twitter.com/elisfanclub) he's tweeting from McMurdo Station, Antarctica. We have until February (some background I just found: on his 1st stint in the Antarctic he was a dish washer. In 2006 he wrote a functioning RubyOn Rails site, got burned out and tried to give it away on Craig's List...unsuccessfully--it's back online now http://listyourlist.com/ . Alrighty then, I just sent Eli a tweet (http://friendfeed.com/e... ) with a plea. I hope I'm not taken for a crazy. Hmm, I know that could be my first reaction.

Erhan probably got moved accidentally. When I got to the page, and was moving the map, I accidently grabbed someone and moved them to the middle of the Atlantic. Thankfully, it was someone who used a special icon, so it was easy to search and put them back.

Hmm, apparently I'm just up the road from Haggis.

I just added myself. Curious - how do you get different placemarks? I like the Google-looking ones that aren't quite raindrops.

Just an addendum to Spidra's explanation: To go back and edit, click the pushpin then click the "Edit" button (look waaay to the left on the page). Then you can click the icon to change, and you'll see Save button next to "Edit"
- Micah Wittman
Oh cool. Nice job reviving this guys. Hopefully we get another good round of users to add themselves.

Kind of frustrating to see how much time I spent on this map and then to find out someone had probably saved their changes over mine - hence mine was gone this entire time. Others should also check for this. In any event, thanks, Spidra, for the tip :) My other pet peeve is Google Maps scrolling incessantly out of nowhere. (Hi Jess.)

Paul, even if you may feel "Like" and its current icon and positioning is the next best option (and perhaps you're right), I'm sure you can think of less strawman-ish proposals in the discussion of alternatives ;) ("Thanks", "Interesting!", giving it a star, etc., or putting the "Like" next to the part reading "...posted a message" etc., which are probably all worse, but just as for...
- Philipp Lenssen
"Mark" or "Flag" or "Star" would work for me. It would also be nice to have the ability to "like" or "dislike" or "agree with" or "disagree with" with posts or comments in the conventional sense, to able to vote on them. But perhaps that would create too cluttered an interface.
- Sean McBride
I think ratings would be cool as Netflix uses. There are five stars that range from "hated it" to "really liked it". based on the rating, the item would move closer to the top of postings.
- Valley
i usually think that actually but i also use like as a bookmark for myself so that i'll come back and read the linked item later, usually done when on iphone or in a hurry
- mike "glemak" dunn
How about "Bump"? That's basically what liking does: pops the post to the top of the feeds because someone found it interesting. We should have another link for "Favorite" being stuff we actually like and/or want to review later or follow up on the discussion from. That way, Bump would be a vote for interesting content and Favorite could be a way to archive what you like. Best of both worlds.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I suspect the "like" term will become more appropriate as the semantic filtering features get added to FF - we will then have the option of "more things you might like too"
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle -- glad to see you're envisioning and lobbying for semantic filtering. Friendfeed could radically revolutionize this space and platform by moving to the next level: integrating Semantic Web technologies into Friendfeed. It wouldn't be that difficult to do. For instance, users should be able to express their likes and dislikes about anything in simple plain text anywhere on...
- Sean McBride
I just stated that I like the Semantic Web. Friendfeed should be able to parse, collect, organize and data mine these semantic statements across the entire Friendfeed space. One should be able to edit one's collected semantic statements in a separate Friendfeed editor.
- Sean McBride
What is Friendfeed mostly about? Matching people on the basis of their shared likes and dislikes. Using simple semantic markup, the matching system could be made much more powerful and efficient.
- Sean McBride
But "appreciate" conveys a positive value judgment, unlike "mark" or "flag," which are neutral. "appreciate" would require a balancing "don't appreciate."
- Sean McBride
Along with the the text, I think it's the smile icon that looks out of place and sometimes plain wrong on certain posts. Might be worth some thought to change it .
- Kamath (नमः)
"Bump" for me conveys the suggestion that I am deliberately trying to push an item back to the top of the attention queue. "Mark" or "Flag" just says that I find this item to be interesting in some way. It feels more neutral to me. But that's just me.
- Sean McBride
But that is what you are doing, Sean. When you like something you're saying "hey everyone in my feed, this is something worth looking at!". Maybe that wasn't your intention? In that case, it would be better to have two links, like I suggested, where one is specifically to bump (give props to the poster for posting and promote the post) and the other is to favorite it or mark it as personally interesting.
- Her Lindsay-ness
Lindsay -- got it now. You took that distinction into account. "Bump" would work for that purpose, yes. (Hashing over this small set of variables and conventions gets into strange parts of the brain. :) But these micro-user interface issues matter a lot in improving the user experience.)
- Sean McBride
I think that the current system is ambiguous enough to be used by everyone, wether that simply be for bookmarking purposes, sharing with friends, or actually linking the item. If you want to say "thank you", there are comments.
- Roberto Bonini
Roberto - "like" to me clearly says that I like, approve of and support a post, and the point of view in that post. I often don't want to communicate that when marking a post as "of interest."
- Sean McBride
I "liked" this, meaning that I think the proposal is hopelessly neurotic and should be abandoned, and hope that all my friends agree, and "like" it in solidarity
- Joshua Allen
I like "Interesting". Like implies approval. Plus I disagree with the long version you have there. My view is that people Like things to pass them on to their followers, not to say anything about the content or the person originally sharing the content.
- Sam Pullara
Most of the sites I use, like Flickr and Upcoming, use "flag" to mean that you are alerting the site owners to offensive content. "Bump" is neutral, but perplexing -- this isn't Digg, it doesn't go up in points, so what am I really doing? I still like "thanks for sharing" because it's so friendly and makes me feel like this is a group of friends (rather than an abstract collection of links).
- Neil Kandalgaonkar
I just had another idea; what if we put the "upvote" label on the poster rather than the item? You can consider it whatever you like on the backend, as a vote for the content and/or the person. But it makes the job clearer on the frontend. You are approving of the "Friend"'s recent act of sharing this with you.
- Neil Kandalgaonkar
Careful here... I think it works pretty well as is, in spite of any ambiguity. And I definitely disagree with anyone who wants a "do not like", a.k.a. "bury".
- Richard ¿digame? Walker
from twhirl
Don't you think the "like" link is too long?
- Steve Chou
I think it's fine just the way it is. There are a myriad of ways users use "Like" as indicated in this thread. Personally, I use it like a mini bookmarking service. I "like" interesting stuff, then come back later and read and decide if it is worth bookmarking over at delicious. I don't typically care that it gets bumped to the top or that the OP sees that I like it. But that's just me. The beauty of friendfeed is partly it's google-like simplicity. Let's keep it that way, ambiguity nothwithstanding.
- Laura Norvig
Sorry to chime in so late, but it's my understanding (maybe I'm wrong) that the sharing aspect of "like" is the surprising one. "Share" alone doesn't let the user know it will be instant rather than allowing them to pick and choose who they share with, but I suppose they'd learn that after only one click (not terrible, but not great). "Share with friends" would fix that. Oh, or what...

My Mom told me last night that she likes Sarah Palin. I asked why. "Because she's a normal person with problems like everyone else." Yes, Mom, and she has as much foreign policy and economic experience as you do, too. Is anyone taking this seriously?
My mom is normal with problems like everyone else... I still wouldn't want my mom to be President. Seriously people.

@Alex Exactly - except that was her response when I asked, "Have you decided who you're voting for yet?" She answered with, "Yeah. I like Sarah Palin." She could just run this ticket by herself if everyone thinks that way.
- Shawn Farner
It's fine to like some one for any of a variety of reasons. But people you like are people you have over for dinner and a rousing game of canasta. People for whom you vote need a certain skill-set and past experience from which to draw to complete the task correctly.

Disappointingly, I have a feeling that a lot of "normal" people are thinking this way.

Her boss, John McCain, is also a "normal person with problems like everyone else" -- problems, like, you know, remembering how many houses you own, or where you put the keys to your 13th car, what to give your wife for Christmas... @Lindsay - right. I definitely understand the excitement that women may feel due to a history of disenfranchisement--the exciting feeling that a candidate might represent them because they are the most *like* them on the surface or in the day-to-day. As a guy, I have had the luxury of the last 200+ years of American history candidates, and know from experience that I don't agree with a candidate or want them to govern me just because they pee standing up, too. Historic times.

These are good points, funny too, at times. I agree, there are plenty of people that I like, but, I would have a tough time supporting them in a run for VP

I am horrified today, about Palin. But I was horrified in 2004 when we watched America vote George Bush in for a second term. It can happen again, and again, and again,,, I will continue to be horrified! At least now the US is no longer an economic superpower! lol

"Josef Hoflehner (1955) lives in Austria but works everywhere: he has long held a fascination with secluded places and empty spaces and since the early 1990's, he has worked in some of the most remote and forbidding areas of the world; including Antarctica, Vietnam, China, Japan, the Yemen, Iceland, and most recently, the Deep South of the United States. This exhibition will draw from each. His black and white images are seen in dream-time – where everything is slowed down and the landscapes are reduced to elemental and painterly shapes; they are sublime, and quiet - and offer us something not picked up by the naked eye in real-time. The prints are beautiful; and are reminiscent, in their technical purity, of the great masters of early twentieth century landscape photography."

@Michael, The problem with section 11 is that it gives Google too much leeway in how they can potentially use the content your browse (GET) or create (POST) through the browser.
