How many Laconica/Identi.ca copies are there? And how do they handle the load and the distribution? If everyone keeps on refering to laconica as the identi.ca website then we've not solved anything!
Well, that is the problem right now. Identica is just a single point. I do not believe that it is federated with any other laconica instance at this point.
- Rob Diana
@Rob Diana (robdiana): That's exactly what I'm concerned about. People are saying that it's successful. I really wish it is, but I frankly don't believe it will handle the load when it becomes more popular. Plus whatever people say, I don't believe that it's that distributed. We're talking about an inexistant federated database.

Hao says, on another thread, that this capability is coming soon.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
when there is a problem the Bidenti.ca will start. it is fine. the important thing is the framework is there. online world needed a schism. everyone in the same place and victim to the same tyranny is a bad situation. @Jack is influenced by eMOM's @aMANdaChapel and @PurpleCar.
- Noah David Simon
You can find a list of Laconica instance on the development website. What's the difference? Well, basically, you can host your account to a different place. Your followers can subscribe to your "remote identity" from any Laconica-based website; your "dents" will show up on your followers timeline but only in the public timeline of the site hosting your account.

a lot of contemporary problems would be solved if we can accept that DNA "DOES" decide certain things. It is not bigoted of me to say that being Jewish gives me access to certain DNA that does certain things. Mark Davidson is wrong! DNA is like twitter... is twitter's architecture evil? No... only if you get hysterical about it and start bullying people about what they can do with their feeds and start talking about grounding your follows.... etc. the inherent architecture of twitter is fine. if the admin at twitter really knew that the architecture could only work with so many people then they should of licensed the technology instead of hoarding it. the architecture was fine... the human element of tyranny took over. http://xrl.us/okmm2 twitter like Hitler... was only DNA!

Igor: sorry to delete your comment, this thread was meant to be "technical"

I realize it is about identi.ca... which is the new clone. it is relevant. the dna must not be hoarded.... identi.ca will have other nets using Lanonica as demand decides. it is a very good thing. I'm more concerned with friendfeed interaction with the services then the lack of copies.
- Noah David Simon
directeur, this was my last update http://www.inquisitr.com/1503... but I haven't been following the new ones. The Laconi.ca page did have a list people could add to.
- Duncan Riley
@Igor The Troll (igorthetroll): I am NOTHING. The whole thing is not about me, or anyone.
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
Note that even if Identi.ca is not distributed by connecting to different Laconica instances, it already implements a queuing system, which is what Twitter is lacking.
- fbrunel
And yes, 15K is not enough for now to experience any serious load issues.
- fbrunel
you fail to understand the technology unless you take the "Human" element into issue directeur. these are communication devices in the end. the DNA comparison is a metaphor for Memes (Richard Dawkins?) ...in the end if the DNA is horded and controlled a cancer will develop. Laconica/Identi.ca I hear does not have that situation... and that is ideal. Supply will meet the Demand
- Noah David Simon
Noah David Simon thinks the Twitter Fail is because Amanda Chapel and her rouge developers are trying to flush me and my friends of Twitter! I tend to agree! Brian Connolly aka Amanda Chapel is a Black Hat Hacker!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Duncan Riley (duncanriley): Thanks for the link. Which brings one of my other questions actually. If say everytime you update on a clone, there's notification sent to every clone where your subscribers are, then the app will take much more time in sending notification than in updating your status actually. This is not a problem right now because there's not that much users/clones, but I guess we will feel the load later.

the eMOM's were the natural cancer of twitter. the twitter DNA was fine... but it failed to take into consideration the natural problem. If there had been multiple twitter's then @aMANdaChapel @PurpleCar and the rest of the elitist twitter whores could of existed in one place and the people in another.
- Noah David Simon
@fbrunel: Yes, sure! But if a laconica clone has to notify every other clone on which we have subscribers then it'll be slow. It's like an operating system that's taking a lot of CPU time and other resources to make itself work properly

Laconica will evolve with the Cancer... directeur!

Noah and Igor: pretty please, we're discussing technical stuff here. I HATE to moderate stuff, I'm not here to juge anyone, so I'll delete the whole thread.

Noah: I understand, and will respect your opinions as long as we don't cite people/names.
- directeur

don't be ridiculous. you are talking about a social networks! the people are the element you are lacking in your discussion. this isn't a gizmo... don't sterilize the conversation behind tech. I have a degree from Carnegie Mellon University. this is how I am trained to think.
- Noah David Simon
the people I mention have attempted to libel. I have no moral problem by mentioning them... they are the social cancer of twitter's elitism
- Noah David Simon
I've heard people talking about posting to identi.ca from their own laconica installs. Personally, I'm kind of over the whole non-threaded <140 chars thing. Too dysfunctional. I prefer Friendfeed.
- Jason Wehmhoener
the problem with twitter... is personal. it is not sterile. the Laconica solution will also evolve out of an identifying human element
- Noah David Simon
@Igor : thanks. @Noah: Again, I'm not about the philosophy of it. A reliable system that should handle zillions of users should handle zillions of users whatever their use of the thing. I don't care what messages are posted, I don't care who's loving/hating who. I'm asking for one thing, only one: Do NOT please treat people, don't cite names especially those who are not here on the thread to answer. That's all
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
it is still necessary for me to log life Jason Wehmhoener. I need linear... we all do. Interactive didn't end film!
- Noah David Simon
directeur: all systems have a breaking point... you want to exist in theory? I recommend an interest in math and not social systems. a degree in theology might help you better with these issues. the people mentioned often use searches to find their names. I know for a fact that the above mentioned people attempted to use searches in their libelous arguments
- Noah David Simon
directeur, fine question and I don't have an answer. My only contribution is that the ability to switch between one Laconi.ca install and another needs a lot of work, say the equivalent of an OPML file you could take with you from one install to another for example
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan Riley (duncanriley): That's actually one idea I want to explore! Instead of pushing, let's imagine it the other way: pull :)

@Noah David Simon (noahdavidsimon): Look, I'm a dev, I've been teaching computer stuff in univ. and trying to make nice stuff as much as I can. I don't brag about this, I don't care about "social labels". Please re-read the title of the entry, re-read my question. You'll understand what I'm trying to tell you.
- directeur
from NoiseRiver
that is a great idea Duncan Riley... but wouldn't universalizing bring us back to an elitist problem? There has to be a filter in the system so a person could avoid hostile circles
- Noah David Simon
directeur... the problem twitter had is they never thought about what I am talking about right now. It never occurred to them because they thought of it in abstract terms. I gave up on programming after college. I don't regret that decision because I knew the issues I was dealing with were needed.
