I can't reproduce the results either. Even more proof that Google's damage control department works real f-a-s-t

I can reproduce these results (as it's fake). 1 - Do a google search for 'balck people stole my car' 2 - when the results come back, in the search box type 'white people stole my car'. 3 - Screenshot and fool everyone.

I think it's also worth pointing out, that it's better for brands if they are represented by a real person on Twitter, not just by the brand's name.
- Tibor Holoda
Tibor, I totally agree with you. The brand name makes for an easy Twitter name, but it should be obvious to anyone visiting the brand's Twitter page who the real person is behind the account.
- Jennifer Van Grove
That was a great bookmark-worthy read and one that I'll definitely point people to when they ask me what twitter is all about and how they should use it well
- Abbas Haider Ali
Jennifer has a gr8 point- Back the Brand with an authentic human voice. Enage, push the brand image, built brand equity. Its not a PR stunt its human effort with compassion and passion behind it. PR is just a byproduct of good engagement !!

Jennifer - Nice succinct piece! I'm working on whether or not to launch a Twitter account for our organization, and this has been very helpful. Another thought -- what about using TwitterFeed? To get a toe in the water before committing our organization to a Twitter account I added a TwitterFeed to my account. Granted, it doesn't promote interaction with the organization, but for someone who's not ready to commit do you think it's useful? (comment via Disqus by Kim Ethridge)

Hi. You're right. I've observed the same but, never really took note. Thanks for pointing it out. (comment via Disqus by Harriet)

Great info! Thanks. Your point about 10News is totally valid, but just FYI they seem to have reestablished themselves as http://twitter.com/sandieg.... What they should do, IMHO, is what I did when I decided to start using my real name on Twitter (I'd been "checking it out" under a nickname): http://twitter.com/eventer Tweet their new info, so it goes out to their followers, and to anyone else who might stumble onto their old identity. I agree with this to a certain degree, but I think for some reason, social standing as far as a company goes is to have a PR consultant. But newer startups don't seem to need this. Now new companies seem to be involved with the public on a more personal level, which is a great idea. I know I much prefer to here something by Sergey than a PR rep.
- Angelo Rodrigues
Let me strap the target to my chest and speak out on behalf of, well, at least SOME PR agencies. We'd never, ever advise a client to do this. Blogs, even corporate blogs, are supposed to be somewhat personal, both in style and the way you converse with your audience. Yes, press releases suck. from twhirl
@kevin, you must have never been a journalist :) a lot of that happens when media outlets are either tight on time or tight on staff. The whole purpose and function of a press release - AP format - is to give the journalist whats needed to create a story for whatever amount of time he/she has. To suggest it as "laziness" I'd disagree. An earnings reporter doesn't have time to knock out...
- Patricia
@Patricia, sorry, I was just suggesting that for a company to post a press release (in its entirety) to its own corporate blog is lazy. The question is whether it's the PR agency being lazy or the company for not taking the time to create an appropriate post for their blog. Wasn't referring to journalists, who of course are all hardworking, sincere and underpaid. ;)
- Kevin Pedraja
I think Friedman makes a very good case. It's a critical position in critical times. Just say no to Hillary for SecState.

In the past, I've agonized about my employer's IT restrictions. I'm obviously not a millennial, who probably would have ignored the restrictions and demanded better bandwidth for video streaming.
- Ontario Emperor
Yes, millennials buy iPhones which aren't controllable by IT departments. Or, they get EVDO modems for their computers, which also gets around IT departments. Or, they just wait to get home to do Facebook and Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
In a sense it predates the millennials. I remember a conversation c 1996 between our graphics person and one of our vice presidents. The graphics person emphatically stated that if he had to give up his Mac and work on a Windows computer, he'd quit. Not long after that, the graphics person left.
- Ontario Emperor
This sort of thing happened in the 70s as well. All kinds of skunk works type projects in big corps using time sharing and mini computers instead of the IT blessed IBM mainframes even under the noses of the IBM planted "consultants".
- Brian Sullivan
This is actually really important to me right now. I just posted .jpgs of text on our biz site and it looks great. I was wondering if .pngs wouldn't be better looking.
- Admiral Anika
Is it true that IE *still* doesn't support PNG properly?
- Victor Ganata
I don't know how to make transparent files. When I save my .png they come out with white backgrounds. :(
- Admiral Anika
So are they saying that Flickr has it wrong, and that my digital photos should be uploaded to the web as png? They don't really state when one should use jpg and when to use png. And I definitely don't want my photos to look "trashy" as they put it.
- Wizetux
I like how the JPG guy in this comic has compression artifacts. @wizetux JPG was invented to compress photos, so they will look fine, usually. However, JPG doesn't do so well on thinks like text and line art... or anything with really high contrast actually.
- Phil G

Hey Louis, welcome to FF. Looking forward to more of your comics.

Hi Louis - that was really funny!, thanks!! :)
- Susan Beebe
Shey, I use Photoshop, but I'm not a genius at it. It seems that whenever I make a transparent graphic for the web, and I go to save it, it gives me the 4 options. And then tells me I have to merge everything and next thing you know it's a white background.
- Admiral Anika
Louis, Thomas, or anyone - how much larger, on average, is a PNG file vs. a JPG file? My image excursions are primarily limited to BMP and JPG.
- Ontario Emperor
@Anika Use the File --> Save For Web command and be sure the Transparency is checked in the Save for Web dialog box
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Anika: Are you using Slices? That's the best way.
- John Wang
@OntarioEmp. It depends entirely on the image content and the file settings. For "computer-generated" things with low numbers of colors (like logos or diagrams) a well optimized PNG is usually smaller (and better-looking) than a JPEG. For anything with alot of color and gradients (like a photo), JPEG is superior and will be many times smaller than a PNG.
- Louis Brandy
@Shey, that's what I do (I think), but I doesn't work for me. I get a white background. @John, I have no idea what Slices is. Is that a program or tool in PS? @Sean, thanks for the tip. I'll look into that.
- Admiral Anika
Lovely post. Can't wait myself! I might be found taking a few pictures myself next Tuesday.

Why is he a great man? Is it because he going to tax corporations out of comparativeness to support the lower middle class?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
What has he done? Read about the man. Check out the books and writings on him. He is a leader, and given the chance he could be a great one bringing the country together to solve problems instead of arguing.
- Dion Almaer
You are right, this just might be his best video yet.
- Bastian
I keep hearing the tax thing get parroted about but don't folks think it's a bit of an exaggeration? I honestly find it hard that either candidate are going to be able to lower taxes AND fund the bailout and any other program they intend to fund with the economy in the state it's in currently
- Bryan
Yeah, I'm voting Obama, but he's still a politician willing to say what he thinks he needs to in order to get elected. This country is pretty much ruined--our economy is trashed, our military won't be able to pull out of Iraq as quickly as Obama is claiming--he's going to have an impossible time doing anything right. That said, McCain has 2+ decades of experience creating & reinforcing the current system that let to this mess. Let's vote for something that at least represents change. Just my 2¥.
- thepete
Bryan, the key is that while Obama lowers taxes for all but the top 5%, those 5% do pay more. They don't pay a crazy amount more, but by virtue of the fact that half the nation's income is made by a very small sliver at the top, this modest increase compensates for the easing of the tax burden on the other 95%. This is the 'share the wealth socialism' that McCain keep talking about. It's up to each of us to decide whether its fair. I think it is.
- Kevin Fox
Why not have a flat tax and have everyone pay 10% of what they make?
- Csturm
My favorite part of the pitch is that he wants to do a complete audit of government spending and get rid of the programs that don't work. I don't hear that from McCain (who seems only focused on reducing earmarks, which, while I agree need to be reduced, make up a small percentage of total government spending). It seems to me that's how he will be able to afford new programs and the tax cuts, by getting rid of the stuff we don't need anyway.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Caroll, I think everyone pays more than 10% now (except for those who are below the poverty line). That wouldn't work. I'm in favor of a consumption tax. You pay on what you spend instead of what you make. But neither candidate is interested in such a radical reform.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
He's not a leader, he just has followers who don't question or dig very deeply into the reality behind his rhetoric.
- Andrew Leyden
I'm consistently shocked that the Republicans don't push for a flat tax. They are a party built on tax issues. To consistently propose tax agenda that pushes solidly for lower taxes for the top 5% of America, they shoot themselves in the foot. People seem to be in favor of tax fairness, but tax breaks for the wealthy just aren't going to be a winnable issues most years.
- Andrew
Consumption tax, wouldn't this tax the poor more? What would be excluded from a consumption tax? What would You put the rate at?
- Csturm
Andrew, with all due respect, you're dead wrong. What "reality" aren't we digging into exactly? I believe strongly in progressive taxation, so it's not like I'm failing to understand what Obama proposes there (which is a rollback of recent tax cuts for the wealthy). Are you talking about bogeymen like Ayers/ACORN/etc.?
- ⓞnor
Wow, an American politican actually talking about the issues that face the country and the policies he'll enact to address them. Of course, logic and reason seem wasted on American voters- he should have just called McCaina secret Muslim and a terrorist, that seems to be the only thing they understand.
- Maverick
While everyone is blaming Republicans for the past 8 years of mistakes, Iraq and the economy, do not forget all their work was approved by the democrats in the house and the senate. The democrats give Bush ok to invade Iraq. The democrats allowed Greenspan to keep the interest rates low to create the housing bubble. So will Obama fix the American problems now that the democrats will have the house, the senate, and the presidency? I doubt it, they could have put a stop to these mistakes before!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Oh and the democrats did approve a tax cut for the 5% of the rich Americans! ;-)
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Consumption tax. Why not just have ONE tax? NO Tax code required. No Tax on Food, but on everything else. Much less admin, so more tax money goes to fund projects and not the collectors. No Annual Tax return required. We all save a shedload of money there too. The rich spend more than the poor so they'd still pay more.
- Ian May
Consumption taxes have big problems. The obvious one is that it is inherently regressive. No matter how high you set the floor on the policy, the people who make the least will pay a higher percentage. And it encourages a black-market. If you have to pay the price plus 20%, someone will offer the product for just the price and make a killing.
- Andrew
Anyone else notice that the video closes with "Barack Obama - President"? Given the kerfuffle over the rumor that he already has a draft of his inauguration speech, why give the GOP any more 'already measuring the curtains' fodder? That said, seeing the words gave me a happy chill down my spine. Maybe they figure the good chills overpower the bad.
- Kevin Fox
OK so consumption tax could create a black market. However, income tax does the same in it's own way. I'll fix your widget, and you pay me cash, and no tax is paid on that income. So surely, same argument?
- Ian May
I am not fixed in anyone's talking points or ideology. I have considered Obama and his party, and I find them lacking. I do find him to be a very clever politician, this video being evidence. Obama has used special interests and divisiveness the entire time he has climbed the political ladder, and I have no reason to believe he will suddenly change when he is elected President.
- ComicList
Ian - It is the same thing to a degree. A consumption tax creates a system of organized crime. In order to be a illegal seller have to get the goods from somewhere. You have to setup shop and keep people from ratting on you. You have to have criminal employees. And organized crime typically leads to violence and other problems. A one off non-taxed transaction now just involves you and the service provider. There is less room for other criminal complications.
- Andrew
Are we voting for issues or for greatness? Maybe we should be electing Madonna?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
It is clear to me Obama is taking the recent polls seriously, otherwise he would not be proposing a "top to bottom audit." He's trying to out-McCain John McCain, and most likely he will succeed.
- ComicList
Chuck - How has Obama used divisiveness? Honest question.
- Andrew
Keep in mind, though, I have never looked for a "great man" to "rebuild America," least of all someone who doesn't understand the role of the President, the role of the federal government, or the Constitution. Yes, Obama is serious thinker, but he's not great and he's not my hope.
- ComicList
In the end, when he wins, Obama will have my prayers, not only that he accepts Christ as his Saviour, but that Obama helps us all understand that men, great or small, and government, are not the answer and not our hope.
- ComicList
@thepete, unfortunately, your assessment is accurate.
- ComicList
Hear hear, Chuck! The answer are the People! We need to educate ourselves not follow the heard!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Occasional Headbanger, one recent example: he told his followers to get into people's faces if they thought those people were not going to vote for Obama. My wife was shopping yesterday at our local mall, and the three Obama supporters in line before her were harrassing the clerk trying to ring up their purchases, demanding she say she would vote for Obama. When she said she didn't want to talk about politics, they denounced her as a racist.
- ComicList
Obama has spent his campaign time trying to turn his supporters against McCain supporters, the poor against the rich, and worst of all, blacks against whites. I don't believe he's seriously interested in ending partisanship when partisanship has been his bread and butter.
- ComicList
Nothing new! On Friend Feed if you do not agree with an Obama A-Lister with support for Obama, you get blocked! ;-)
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I am a registered Republican and I can admitt that this video is great. But I will not be voting for Obama ... I have had him as an IL state senator and a US Senator. Obama has done very little actual work. He is a great speaker and motivator, but not a good implementer or problem solver. He will probably surround himself with good people, but we said the same about W and Colin Powell. Obama does not get my vote
- John Head

@Mark Bean $3 Million per child? Wow, sounds like a great plan. I wonder how much our taxes will be then! I just wish I could get a piece of that $3 Million for my son's tuition. I would have taught the kids to put down the Wii, walk outside after dark, and look up.
- Douglas Karr
from twhirl
@Douglas: better yet if it convinces 100 kids that the world isn't flat, that it is older than 10,000 years, and that we are all part and parcel of the same experience regardless of whatever crackpot creation story you believe. Kudos for Obama for not taking the bait -- we need to invest in science and education and not let things like this become talking points.
- Todd Harris
Science is part of it. The bigger one for me is foreign policy
- Deepak Singh
For me it's mostly economic. He's got the smartest economic advisors, and he seems to value intelligence, not denigrate it as has been the political norm. Science, foreign policy, and reducing the enhanced policy influence of the religious right are also big issues of mine.
- Mr. Gunn
Did you read the blog post by Scott Adams. Obama apparently described education as a top economic issue. This is a real forward thinking man.
- Aditya
Goodness knows why religion plays a part in politics in this country (USA) ... it doesnt in many other developed nations. Obama is doing a good job of not bothering with all that malarky and keeping the focus on what will actually make a difference.
- Chris Johnson
I thought that there might be a possibility that Obama wasn't religious, but instead gives the impression that he is in order to not lose votes. Then he mentioned that "sexuality is sacred" during the recent debate. That comment stood out for me, because everything else he said seemed reasonable and well thought-out.
- Paul Grav
Obama is religious. Read any of his books and it comes through loud and clear. I was surprised at just how much Christianity means to him. He keeps it personal though such that even an atheist like myself can vote for him.
- Paul M. Watson
I'm Christian, but would sooner vote for an atheist than for a Christian who indiscriminately throws the weight of law behind Biblical rules. The Bible addresses everything: what you do publicly and privately, what you say, what you think about, how you feel. Government should only concern itself with creating a maximally free and reasonably safe environment in which people make their own spiritual choices.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce: I agree with you in part. If you want to see things from God's perspective of government in a pluralistic society: try Numbers 15:15-17. That said, I think a critical reading of Judges and Kings, Jeremiah and Ezekial will show you a perspective on how biblical law and government interact and what the results were.
- Melanie Reed
He is just an amazing person, he will always try his best, and he surrounds himself with the best possible people and what he doesnt know he has a great support group; the american people which he listens to
- Kyle Weller
Melanie, the early Christians did well without any legal system backing them up. In fact, I'd say when a Roman emperor finally did start backing them it was a step in the wrong direction. Numbers 15 is over according to Acts 15.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
People need to shut up about this $3-million "overhead projector" bit. First of all, yes, it was to upgrade the Adler Planetarium's projector, not a simple overhead projector. Second of all, it was never approved. http://www.factcheck.org/askfact...
- Cheryl Jones
Cheryl, it just shows the ignorance and out of touchness of the people that keep on bringing it up. People that have been to a planetarium know the benefits of this in showing our universe and the scientific need for it.
- Uncle CW™
Bruce, thank you for responding but is it not written: "I will write my law upon their hearts"? As for a step in the wrong direction, if you had been living back then and been a Christian, would you have not considered it some small relief that being burned as a torch at night, fed to the lions, or crucified for simply practicing your faith had stopped because the government had stopped it? This finally happened around the time of Constantine. Men of evil inany government will cream to the top in any age.
- Melanie Reed
But that people and still Christians are persecuted for practicing their faith by governments continues to this day. Indeed, according the Associated Press just recently 7 Christians were killed for practicing their faith in Mosul.
- Melanie Reed
Franklin, there's a "Hide" link you can use if you'd don't like reading a variety of people talk about religion and politics.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Melanie, early Christians were persecuted for *not* following the *state* religion. If they had said "Caesar is Lord" they would have been left alone. Becoming the state religion was a step away from being persecuted, but also a step toward being persecutors. I would rather have no state religion.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
@Christopher Welle: Totally agree. It boggles my mind, in this age of technological advances, how little people in this country care about scientific endeavors. It's pathetic.
- Cheryl Jones
Bruce: forgive me but that is the mistake we tend to make: thinking that there can be no "state" religion. There is always such a thing because it has been put into humans the need to worship. Invariably if not directed toward God, it works itself out in horrible ways towards humanity. There will always be religion, though the form of it will always be distorted if not acceptably practiced The error is in thinking that a name taken is then fulfilled in actuality. "By their fruits you will know them".
- Melanie Reed
For fence sitters, this is a MUST read. This isn't a simple Obama loving piece. It dissects the issues "Mr. Obama's temperament is unlike anything we've seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment. "

Matthew x2, agreed on that conclusion from afar, but the view points on America domestically don't always tie up with what we see from the outside. I think Twitter is a way to speak with the world. I could never travel to all the meetings, see the people, exchange a few words without tools like Twitter, Jaiku, Friendfeed, and Facebook. Twitter and all the other interactive social media tools makes small personalized knowledge management groups possible http://kknetwork.ning.com/ Twitter helps to globalize the individual.
- Helge V. Keitel
Thanks Gregory, it would be difficult for you and me to arrange a meeting within minutes without social media platforms. While work with my daily tasks I've the opportunity to exchange ideas with people around the globe. There's nothing new in this as such, but the change is dramatic compared to 20 years ago. But what did bankers do wrong? Why didn't they see the dangers in the packaging of sub-prime loans? Do we understand the limits and restrictions of global networking?
- Helge V. Keitel
Twitter is more uni-messaging than a real bi- or multi-lateral conversation base. However, many creative business people find ways of reaping value out of it for themselves or their business. At that point it becomes more than just an update of current status. Initially, the founders IMO had only a simple idea of keeping and making updated as their prime goal of creating Twitter.
