“What a lovely virus. Adds icons to desktop. "Malware Defender," "Protect Your Privacy," and "System Error Fixer." Worse, I cannot even run an AV or antispyware, the computer is to choked up.”

You're on XP? - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Folks, my computer is so choked, I cannot even open up a browser window. Yes, I'm using Win XP. Doing virus research on my laptop while checking the sick desktop. What now? Clock is gone, replaced with VIRUS ALERT! - David
Shut down, open system in Safe Mode with Networking...then go to castlecops.com - Alex "Maverick" Scoble
Let me give the Safe Mode with Networking a shot....tks guys...keeping fingers crossed. - David
Windows XP, Safe Mode with Networking, I hit enter, string of file path names appear then stops at something with system32\Drivers\Mup.sys - Nothing happens after that. Lights are on, no one is home. - David
Virus Alert? Sounds like what I had. Try Malwarebytes. - (teh)Kenny
I wish I could enter Safe Mode. This is real bad. - David
David....do you have a Linux Live CD? There are some distributions that come with Virus removal software....I've heard about them, but don't know which ones they are or which one to recommend...I'm not the expert in that department. Anyone out there have a suggestion on this track? - Sean McGee
format c: - Geoff Schultz
@Sean - Nope. I just have my WinXP CD. That's it. - David
@Geoff - That sounds dire. I hope it doesn't come to that! - David
I think AVG has a version that will run on a thumb-drive... - Mark VandenBerg
That sucks. - Mathew Ballard
For the past 5 minutes, I am looking at WinXP Home Edition...Loading your personal settings....No hard drive noise, fan is getting louder, nothing's happening.... - David
Get a live Linux CD to pull what files off you need and then format the sucker. Like Johnny Cochran once said, "If it can't boot, you can't compute!" - Mark VandenBerg
A sad day in computing...if you have more tips let me know. I think I need a stiff drink now. - David
This is kinda lame: If I choose to format the c drive, how do I do so when I cannot get to any working window or command prompt? - David
Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD drive before the hard drive, pop in your recovery CD and let 'r rip. - Mark VandenBerg
A-ha! Made it to the desktop! Would you believe, the damn virus has "erased" my C: drive icon under My Computer. - David
Crashed. - David
