"although i sincerely wish it (we'd get sweet speeds with fiber), i imagine it'd be very expensive to get coverage to all homes that currently have POTS"

"yeah, that's true, it's what i used (see my other comments in this thread), however, as a solution to replace a corded telephone (that doesn't require its own power source), we need to keep the number of extra equipment low, as what mindshadow points out, they can just send the electricity through the communication line."

"no, emergency services stop when the winds get up to 40mph or higher. I know because the first thing to get knocked out was power to our building, couple hrs before the storm really hit, and because of this, it triggered our building's fire alarm, which can only be shut off by the fire department. I called but they couldn't come. By the way, an FYI, a building's fire alarm battery back up system lasts for at least 6 hours. Having a blaring alarm made things so much worse. (i didn't have anything heavy enough to smash the alarm, so i had to stuff it with Cranium play-doh to muffle the sound.)"

"Although I would unplug the battery backup trying to save juice, but hey, something is something. especially to call your family to tell them you were ok and and hear from other loved ones that were also in the storm. we couldn't connect to any of our family for at least 2 days...which is an incredibly long time to live in major worry after a hurricane like that."

"in my area, all cellphones weren't working either. but yeah, i used my APC backup battery to hook up my cable and router to read news and weather online. (i didn't have vonage back then, otherwise i would have been making calls)"

"although, i have to admit, during the last hurricane, [wilma](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...), i used my APC battery backup to hook up my router and cable modem and was able to surf online....had I had vonage back then, i would have been able to make calls."

"what about 911 services? as someone who's been through many hurricanes, having a landline (with a corded phone) is crucial. The first thing to go down are the cell phone towers, then power."

">Reddit, the only real competitor to Digg, did little to expand or innovate. When it comes to social news, Digg is still way on top and widened the gap in 2009 really??? I left Digg two years ago because of digg's "innovations". I think the reddit community offers more to Social News because of the engagement between other redditors. Yea sure, we have our pun threads, and can be silly, but over all the quality of discussion has always been far better than digg. In a way i'm happy people promote digg so much, let them keep all the 13 year old kids and power users, i'm staying here at reddit. **tl;dr:** digg sucks, reddit awesome /rant"

"I'm not sure what you mean about "worried" about NBC broadcast, but you do raise a good point, broadcast tv could change. this might mean that it's much more likely that NBC channels, like MSNBC, CNBC, etc, would be bundled into basic Comcast packages (which can be a positive). Then again, perhaps not, the opposite i suppose would be to move NBC to a paid tier package (which would be stupid of course)."
- David Machiavello
"that would be horrible if they removed NBC content from Hulu. To me, i associate Hulu with NBC (and Comedy Central), and FanCast with CBS. With NBC out of Hulu, i'd just watch the Daily Show and Colbert."

"To my wife and I, the chemistry between Liz and Jack on 30 Rock is what really sells the series to us. Don't get me wrong, there's tons of other great stuff in the show, but the interactions between Jack and Liz are truly great."
