“Swarm” of 25 Quakes in Central California in Recent Hours | USGS
Lots of shaking going on near Keeler tonight. - Anthony Citrano from Bookmarklet
A few of buttes in that area, wouldn't be surprised if one forms into a Volcano! - Brandon
I thought it was my head turning! because of my vertigo.. - Petek(UCB)_
Luckily they are in a very sparsely populated area. - Jeff P. Henderson
@jeff: Brandon already said there were only a few butts in that area. ;) - Anthony Citrano
heh ;) - Brandon
As long as they are Big Butts, 'cause I like big butts and i cannot lie... - Jeff P. Henderson
I hope the wad has been blown. I don't want another quake of '89 - Rodfather
And Jeff, a 5.2 won't impact anybody all that much anyway. That's a thunderstorm in a world of hurricanes. - Louis Gray
I'd rather see lots of small quakes than one big one any day. - Jeff P. Henderson
Yep Louis, 5.2 is not a real big quake. Mostly just rattles things a bit, probably not much if any damage even in a densely populated area. - Jeff P. Henderson
@Louis: I suppose that depends on how close you are. A 5.2 is about equivalent to 100,000 *tons* of TNT - or several dozen nuclear bombs. Not exactly the kind of energy release I'd want happening under *my* neighborhood. So, it's all relative, my friend. :) - Anthony Citrano
Anthony, true, but the energy from an EQ is released many miles below the ground so it is disbursed widely and you don't get the full brunt of the energy release on the surface at any one point like you would if you were standing next to a bomb going off on the surface. 5.2 is approximately equivalent to the energy released by the Nagasaki bomb. - Jeff P. Henderson
Yeah Jeff but still, that's a lot of energy and it depends on how deep, etc. I'm just sayin' it ain't nuthin. And I think Nagasaki was 30kt or so, and my quick math has a 5.2 at about twice that, or even a bit more, but I suck at log(x) and all that.... - Anthony Citrano
Also, when we had the *very mild* 3.4 here in Venice last year - centered a few hundred meters from my house - it really felt as if a large bomb went off and someone had picked the house up off the foundation and slammed it back onto the ground. Very, very small but not nuthin’. The guys over at Canal Club had lots of poo in their pants and a lot of broken glasses to clean up. And a 5.2 is nearly 100 times stronger ... but of course - back to Louis’ point - this all *pales* in comparison to a real one... - Anthony Citrano
Yep, I have lived in the SF Bay area all of my life and have experienced many quakes including the Loma Prieta quake. Even a 3.x can rattle you if you are close to the epicenter. I was in the grocery store for a 4.x in San Jose once and watched all of the wine bottles come crashing to the floor. It felt like a truck hit the building! - Jeff P. Henderson
I lived in North San Jose at the time of the 89 quake and was driving on 101 in Sunnyvale. I'm really glad I was not in a building at the time! Would have needed an underwear change after that one. When I got home, all of my furniture was about 6-8 inches from where I left it that morning. No damage to the building or my belongings, except for a couple of broken bottles that fell in the... more... - Jeff P. Henderson
I was driving on a cliff road coming back from Big Basin. :) - Cristo

Loic Le Meur
@ejang can you elaborate what you envision being a Social Media Newsroom using Seesmic? Would love your thoughts, thanks
can i just pop in here? it's one thing to have us un(der)informed masses gabbing about breaking news, but when people post breaking news, there's always that huge gap of space while others wait for verification. if there were credentialed people on seesmic verifying news, that lapse when things are urgent won't happen. - Anika
Gregory and Faboo Mama, thanks, interesting, could you also tell me how you would see it. Read: what would you do if you were in my shoes to make it happen? - Loic Le Meur
whether you hire staff or just try to get users credentialed, that's up to you. but across all subject matter, it would be nice to have an "authority" on there. so say for politics, you should have tried to credentialed some people for the DNC and RNC conventions. real time conversations with delegates, politicians and all that stuff. locally, i use seesmic to get a take on angelenos state of mind. i am going to interview local politicians via seesmic that sort of stuff. - Anika
but anything your 'citizen journalists' create can be edited in your office and posted like seesmix or newspop. imo, creating this under newspop would give you a lot more content from places that rachael can't get to. - Anika
Agree with Faboo Mama. kind of a Mahalo-like news emission. Also, if there would be a way for users to specify keywords like "business," "politics" etc which would become topics of those news emissions.. like watch-words when they pop-up in some news or media outlet, they are somehow vblogged by volunteer Seesmic users or dedicated stuff and put on Seesmic. - Hayk H.
Loic talk to David C of SPot.us he heads up a crowd sourcing journalist effort - Fred Grott
Hi Loic, does moving from Paris to SF really help in your web venture in your opinion? .. just curious.. - Mark L from twhirl
sounds a bit controlled. I don't like this newsroom idea even though I know it will make you a lot of money Loic. It has too much pretension towards interactivity when the reality is television on demand. On a theoretical playing field this is the lowest common denominator... but then again so in porn. Have fun kids! - Noah David Simon
Faboo and Hayk interesting, would you pay them or just promote them? I don't have an investment budget for that... This business model has been tried by many and failed up to now. Mahalo is a good example (not failed) where everybody is just doing it for fun I guess. - Loic Le Meur
Why not partner with journalism schools? Also second the motion to talk to digitaldave@twitter (David Cohn) - Howard Rheingold
Mark, yes, will write a blog post about this soon - Loic Le Meur
Loic also check out Current.TV - they have user-generated news shows too. An Al Gore company. I can introduce you to the CEO and COO if you are interested - Chris Saad
I mean that Micro interactions with brands are very powerful tools for marketers to engage with users. Not only News and press release can do but also seesmic release can do. - Ejang
that's the beauty of it, there's so many people online willing to whore themselves out for a logo behind them, they'll do it for free as long as they get promoted, credentialed and have access to contacts. As Chris said, look at CurrentTV. There's a lot of good content there being generated by users. Granted a lot of those users are film school students, rich kids, or people with gov't backing, but for the most part, the content is good. There's just nothing really "current", nor is there conversation. - Anika
thank you so much all, I am digesting all your comments please keep them coming! - Loic Le Meur
i am working on a news information sharing idea and have a site WOT News being finalised, a citizen journalism site so to speak. Would love to have a chat sometime...if you are interested. - Don
I think you & Pitch Engine could find a way to revolutionize social releases.I was thinking the other day, you'd be a great fit! - lonnie b hodge
good meme here, investigative journalism is in crisis due to budget crunches - ishak from twhirl
Don, would love it. lonnie, will definitely talk to pitch engine - Loic Le Meur
Loic, do you think about adding a Skype-like calling feat to Seesmic: calling real time/ video conferencing? and surely someone must have mentionned the topical videos. Not only crowd sourcing journalism volunteers - BE sure there are many who would willingly do that off their work and time. Topical videos like social media issues, leadership, how to start a company, etc. IMO there is a HUGE cash-in possibility. Say a video of 5mins feating advice from some VC (?) for 99cents or smth like that? - Hayk H.
Hayk thank you very very interesting - Loic Le Meur

Who's Going to Fund the Next Steve Jobs? - WSJ.com
"As for Sarbanes-Oxley, or SOX, the hope was that by now firms would have gotten over the hump of learning to comply, and auditors would have stopped obsessing over minute risks. Last year the Securities and Exchange Commission explicitly advised firms to focus only on material threats to the integrity of a firm's financials. "The SEC's heart was in the right place, but the accounting firms' hearts are not," says Mark Heesen of the National Venture Capital Association. He adds that the Big Four accounting firms "continue to feast on SOX audits." Ms. Mitchell says the "SOX tax" runs up to $3 million per year per company, which can reduce a firm's market value by much more." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
"Last quarter marked the first time in 30 years that not a single company backed by venture capital went public in the U.S." - Louis Gray
Sarbanes-Oxley was a kneejerk reaction to appease the masses that wanted some sort of assurance that the markets weren't going to implode. After the dust settles SarbOx will be amended--if not removed--and all will be back 'to normal.' On the same note, expect similar witch hunt and follow-up legislation for this go-around. We're already beginning to see indictments for fraud pertaining to the mortgage markets... - grant fox
I think most new laws are kneejerk reactions to appease the masses that want some sort of assurance. - Gabe
I found the comments about entrepreneurs building low capital investment companies to sell to the larger competitors to be quite interesting. Could it be that these people are valuing personal freedom over still having a set of bosses? My guess is that there are far more people who want to create something, than who want to become 'industry titans' with all that entails. The out come is not always a good place for a person to be - compare Jerry Yang to Steve Jobs, or Larry and Sergei. - Robin Barooah
@ Chris: do you mean that trying to find the next Steve Jobs is worth doing? Because a witch hunt only brings to mind all the collateral damage of impostors and accusations. - Clare Dibble
Thanks for the clarification, Chris. In your opinion, who/what is the witch? the mortgage market itself? I've heard you say before that real estate prices never go down, especially in San Fransisco (except when they do). - Clare Dibble

need to go to Burning Man someday. - Thomas Hawk
I have tons of burner friends, but I've never felt compelled to go. I won't bore you with the list of reasons it fails to interest me. I really enjoy checking out flickr just afterwards though. I've also enjoyed seeing how burner culture is slowly being integrated into mainstream Bay Area life. You can't go to a geeky gathering like Maker's Faire or Yuri's Night without getting a taste of it. Kids and families like (some of) burner culture too. I like it when it's closer to home. - Jason Wehmhoener
I stay in SF for all the empty bars and restaurants! - Veronica
No. I support limitations on carbon emissions. - shelisrael1
This makes me want to go to Burning Man: http://bit.ly/258nV8 - David Worrell
On the subject of carbon emissions, I totally agree. I was more than a little horrified by the video my friend showed me of "Crude Awakening" when he returned. That shit is just plain stupid, excuse my french. - Jason Wehmhoener
Thomas: A big set of Burning Man photos from you one of these days would be awesome! It'd be a great addition on your journey to the million. - Vincent X
No. I can't plan far enough ahead and by the time it rolls around it's just too late. - Kevin Fox
Crude Awakening's total carbon footprint was the equivalent of half a gallon of gas per participant. If you're that concerned about carbon, you shouldn't travel by car anywhere, ever, for anything. Burning Man *looks* extravagantly wasteful of fossil fuel, but the fuel burned simply getting to the event (or any such event) dwarfs all the pyrotechnics. It's kind of ridiculous to go to, say, SxSW, but not to Burning Man, based on ecological consciousness. - ⓞnor
sorry nor, but that argument pretty much falls flat for me. BTW, I drive very little. - Jason Wehmhoener
back in the early days I was thinking about going but I heard that you had to get your camera registered and that it seemed like such a pain in the ass to get approval to shoot it. I've heard it's lightened up since then though with regards to photography and SLRs. - Thomas Hawk
One of my buddies always brings his SLR. I live vicariously through him, heh. - Jason Wehmhoener
Nope.. not my thing - Dave Peck
Jason: If you basically never drive anywhere, and wouldn't consider going to any sort of recreational gathering that requires travel, then that's commendably conservative of you. But that's nothing specific to Burning Man - you would have to give the same answer to the question of whether you go to any other event (SxSW, PAX, E3, Woodstock, AAAS, whatever your thing might be). - ⓞnor
Sounds interesting, now that those who are "too cool" dis it.... - Wilma Stoneflint
yes nor, I'm pretty conservative that way. - Jason Wehmhoener
No thanks. A) I'm a family guy B) Burning Man might have been cool once but seems to be the workaholic answer to a vacation - least the folks I know who have gone seem to fit this mold. 'Work hard, play hard' type people - not my kind of crowd. - AJ Kohn

In an Iranian Image, a Missile Too Many - The Lede - Breaking News - New York Times Blog
For its part, Agence France-Presse retracted its four-missile version this morning, saying that the image was “apparently digitally altered” by Iranian state media. The fourth missile “has apparently been added in digital retouch to cover a grounded missile that may have failed during the test,” the agency said. Later, it published an article quoting several experts. Throughout the day, several news sites have taken steps to disown the photograph that they ran on Wednesday, including LATimes.com and MSNBC.com. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

I find the enthusiasm of media funny. Media should better direct our country's foreign policy than scoring some brownie points on photoshop disasters. How does it matter if one missile failed. What matters is what we are going to do to stop missile proliferation without using our own missile. Scoring such brownie points are kid's play and not media's. - Krishnan Subramanian

I guess I'm getting used to it - without doubt, it's an improvement, thnx Loic and Marco - Garrido from twhirl
and try the pic share feature, it takes a few seconds to do what really looks like like a short blog post, a pic, a text and a link et voila! - Loic Le Meur
Loic, great update to twhirl, clean interface, more intuitive - Ralph Poole from twhirl
Nice update! Is there any shortcuts for Twhirl?? - Alex Sauceda from twhirl
still trying to get my head around friend feed in twhirl.... - djp from twhirl
Still not like the interface. Still not see the reason why we need a specific app for friendfeed. Some stuff could be sorted via a easy firefox extension e.g. notification. - Benjamin Kohler from twhirl
I'm not sure about this, but my main concern.. why does my FF feed in Twhirl look almost completely different than what I see on the web? Am I the only one seeing this? - felix
Love the new changes - a few issues still with the commenting. It remembers the past comment when I write a new one instead of clearing the box, and it also clears out my comment box every time the feed refreshes. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Nice work! Loving the improvements! - Lon from twhirl
Great new features. Testing it out now. - Corvida
FriendFeed is going to be seeing a lot more activity because of this. Cheers to the Twhirl team! - Mark Frost from twhirl
Test! -------> Cool! - americanm from twhirl
Just tested it.. amazing.. thx for the update - BRIAN RITCHIE from twhirl
Instead of two windows, give me two tabs like gtalk (browser) - Mrinal Desai
Great update. Good work. - Bernd Sailer from twhirl
Really like the updates Loic! - Parth Awasthi
well - i´m still not sure, if I should prefer AlertThingy or Twhirl ;) - Dieter Schwarz from twhirl
Really digging the reduced memory usage. Before twhirl would growto over 500MB and now it's pretty steady at 150MB or so. Thanks! - Jauder Ho from twhirl

You know what job that doesn't exist that I'd find insane enough to take on? Being the product/brand manager for the person, Robert Scoble.
Ballsy as hell to even suggest, much less tackle. But hey. We don't get ahead by being timid nor weak. - Eric Rice
Interesting concept. I'm not sure that I'd ever give up the management of my personal brand to anyone, no matter how good they are. - Mike Doeff
Not sure if he needs one ;-) he rocks all by his amazing self! - Susan Beebe
Your selling yourself short man. Scoble's never gonna break out of his very limited uber-geek niche appeal. Put that effort into managing brand Eric Rice. - Rob Safuto
Rob, I don't think it's as easy to manage your own brand. Outside eyes are needed. That's why brand managers exist. It's like designing your own biz card or web page--- over and over and over and just not getting it right. But for others, oh hell yeah. Cake. - Eric Rice
unnecessary - agree w/ rob go w/ brand managing yourself ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
An objective eye can help a lot, even with an awesome brand. And who would say I want to manage x's brand if they didn't already have something going. - Goldie Katsu
Goldie: It's like a car needing a tune-up. Fine tuning. Not totally Michael Caine/Steve Martin in the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Just gotta move the train off the track for a second to inspect and assess and tune. - Eric Rice
I think there's definitely a lot of value in Eric Rice being a facilitator for companies to enter the social media or gaming space. Help a company that's not on the inside to get in and do it right. - Rob Safuto
@Robert Scoble so you don't have a personal assistant yet? ;) - Jacob Nahin
Eric: you're my R&D department. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert: Be careful what you sign, or you might have to go as "The podcaster formerly known as Scoble" until the contract's term expires. Then again, some of the fringe unicode characters are pretty cool looking... - Kevin Fox
@Simon I offered him before than you - If it was an offer :-) - Erhan Erdogan
Eric your mind is a weird and wacky place... - Dave Peck
I think he needs an entire agency :) - Devlin Dunsmore from twhirl
Yeah, we have really entered the world of people as person brands. - Tris Hussey
@Tris I really love the idea of person brands. In some way it validates my obsessive-compulsive urge to grab my username everywhere ;) - Andrés David Aparicio from twhirl
@Tris Like a Beckham perfume - I want a "21 inch Scoble LCD monitor" : ) Will you buy it like me? : ) - Erhan Erdogan
Heh, I'll take the Scoble brand RSI wrist support strap. ;-) - Jason Wehmhoener
Dunno-Scoble is interesting as an antenna, you're interesting as a transmitter - Mark Forman
Scoble is one of a kind...and you are comparing him to other products? - Luke Harvey-Palmer
Eric, I think you have lost it. Can you imagine trying to rein him in to stay on message? - Cyndy
All kidding aside, I had this kind of problem to a degree for a while. For a while I had about 12 blogs I wrote professionally, plus my own personal one. It got to the point where I had diluted my brand. I couldn't say what "my blog" was, or what I blogged about. I had to pull back, focus, and learn to manage "my personal brand". - Tris Hussey
Cyndy not really, it just takes a nerves of steel. ;) - Eric Rice
Or a steady supply of Xanax... - Cyndy

My friend is having a "Divorce Party" a new concept to me, confused on how to react, quite honestly.
Are husband and wife attendee in the same "divorce party"? : ) - Erhan Erdogan
Trying to think what kind of present to bring to that party..... - Stefan Hayden
Wow. I've never heard of a "divorce party" before. Are they on good terms, is that the reason? I have friends who divorce and then hang out with both new spouses. Easy 10 min walk to court for the divorce. Usually they're still "in love", but realize that they are taking different paths in life. - Mitchell Tsai
They will not (Husband wife) be at the party. It's really a 'good riddance' party and a "new chapter" party - Jeremiah Owyang
Heheh ok ok : )) A "(P)Re-Wedding Party" - Erhan Erdogan
@Erhan Erdogan :)))))) - Maryam Ardakani
I didn't have a party, but took a vacation - was awesome to get rid of the ex :) - Paula Hawk
that deserves a big WTF - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I can totally relate as to why someone would do that. In fact, I now feel inspired to throw one myself!! - Clay Newton
I've been to a few- I think it's a good idea re: closure. Only issue is the total randiness of the new divorcer, so be forewarned! - anna sauce
Kevin
at least 50% of what I see on friendfeed is people writing about friendfeed or twitter...
You need new, more diverse, friends or you need to hide those conversations and move on. Me? I like the noise, so keep it up. - Robert Scoble
it's also because FF/twitter is the current storm moving over the interweb - Morgan
@Kevin: I don't think I've posted much of anything about Friendfeed, and nothing about Twitter. I *reply* to a number of posts on those topics, but they don't interest me enough to dwell on them independent of input. So as Scoble pointed out, it's all down to who you're reading. - Roger Benningfield
As I've said a few times when this comes up, it's because FriendFeed is so shiny and new that it goes in waves. You had the first users back in October, then you had the post-beta surge, and now you're seeing the post-Scoble surge, and the post-Twitter issues surge. With more pushing by Steve Rubel, Jeremiah Owyang and Thomas Hawk, this won't go away immediately, but you should see the mix fluctuate. That said, Robert is right. You need to follow more folks who talk about more things. - Louis Gray
At least 100% of your friends in friendfeed or twitter are Geeks and care only about Twitter and FriendFeed!! - john
Twitter is useless. Anyone on twitter is definitely on FF, and if they are not, they are stupid. Having said that, rather than going to twitter to post your little message, that will inevitably end up on and get the most action on FF, you might as well just skip twitter, and go right to the crowded room that is FF. - Anthony
Here's one way to change this mix: everyone go to Flickr and favorite some photos. Then go and write an interesting blog post. Then do a little video on youTube. Then go to Google Reader and share some interesting stuff. If everyone did that then we would have other things to talk about. Yes, I'm taking my own medicine I'm over at Google Reader right now. - Robert Scoble
Including you. - TranceMist
for nascent tools that's pretty common, and agree if twitter wasn't sucking fumes right now it wouldn't be as interesting - my guess is the team behind ff isn't minding the conversion though - built in focus group and feature request pool if used right... - mike "glemak" dunn
Robert: You like the noise that much? Without an adequate filter I doubt you'll survive it... just try an analogy, I play jazz in my coin, someone sings "Wherevaaa you are..." by Celine Dion of course, someone else, an other one imits Eminem, what would you do? - directeur
directeur: noise is like the waves in the ocean. You gotta learn to swim and surf. After you do, all you want is more and bigger waves. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I never learnt to swim actually, but I still think that we all need filters, because noise is not as uniform as waves may be. Noise has some bad sides that even the best exercice won't defeat. - directeur
That's so not true, we're also talking about Plurk. - Mark Drapeau from twhirl
Most people will want filters. I agree. I just don't care about them for ME. I'm very adept at surfing the noise. Most people aren't. Don't design your products for ME design them for everyone else. That's why I want filtering, so I can get more people in here. - Robert Scoble
FF can seem almost exclusive to social networking and media stuff. Only it's really not. Want to see what else people are talking about? Go to the everyone tab and type in a search term - baseball, "sex in the city", what I had for dinner, or whatever. You'll likely find lots of conversation about those things, and the people who posted them. And remember you can exclude search terms by putting a - sign in front of them. - Tom Landini
"That's why I want filtering, so I can get more people in here." Sorry didn't understand this one :) - directeur
fair enough - i'll post some videos to go with the pictures and blog posts that i added this afternoon - and don't get me wrong, i do really enjoy the out-of-tech contributions: Scoble with science, Rubel with with sports, Fred Wilson with NYC and music, Hawk with photos, and much more... in any case, it's more an observation than a criticism, and yes, one that says I should be branching out more to find the optimal mix for my own personal tastes - Kevin
When I show most people FriendFeed all they see is the noise. I want a way to show them that they can control the noise. If I had that, then a LOT more people would like hanging out here, which would improve all of our lives. - Robert Scoble
For this reason I hope FF will first worry about improvements around duplication and hiding content and worry about all the stuff Steve Gillmor asked for...after that! - Robert Seidman
@Scoble agreed. One ofthe biggest turn-offs to me about Friend Feed is the constant noise, esp. about twitter and FF - Jacob Nahin
I more than completely agree Robert! I'm not talking about filtering "people" (God how I'd hate this!) I'm simply talking about filtering information, which is a different thing. Of course having a lot more people here is such a wealth! I meet people, I learn many things, but I, for example, just don't care about R'n'B or hate strawberries, that doesn't mean that I don't care of what else Scoble has to say :) - directeur
Robert: they covered all of that on Gillmor Gang on Friday. I think their answers were very interesting. - Robert Scoble
I agree, time to get a life beyond Twitter or FriendFeed!;-) Take up gardening or music or something already! My two cents... - Cathryn Hrudicka
I agree. Just had a talk with a few people about that last night. It's one of the main reasons why I've been staying away from FriendFeed lately. - Corvida
jesus too true - adolfo foronda
If you don't want to see stuff about twitter or friendfeed, enter this search term: "service:internal who:everyone -twitter -friendfeed" This query will return all the stuff shared from Friendfeed except those that mention twitter or friendfeed. Amazingly, there are posts that talk about other things. Lots of post. (You can change the service parameter to see googlereader, blog, flickr, or whatever.) - Tom Landini
An interesting case here: http://friendfeed.com/e... - directeur
yeah, but are you reading friendfeed in mysocial 24x7 ? - paynito
what's mysocial? and No, whatever it is, it's not 24x7. I have, say, an hour for real life on my desktop computer, in which I take 5 minutes to code, answer profesional emails, fix bugs and you know such boring stuff... - directeur
