Yep Louis, 5.2 is not a real big quake. Mostly just rattles things a bit, probably not much if any damage even in a densely populated area.

@Louis: I suppose that depends on how close you are. A 5.2 is about equivalent to 100,000 *tons* of TNT - or several dozen nuclear bombs. Not exactly the kind of energy release I'd want happening under *my* neighborhood. So, it's all relative, my friend. :)

Anthony, true, but the energy from an EQ is released many miles below the ground so it is disbursed widely and you don't get the full brunt of the energy release on the surface at any one point like you would if you were standing next to a bomb going off on the surface. 5.2 is approximately equivalent to the energy released by the Nagasaki bomb.

Yeah Jeff but still, that's a lot of energy and it depends on how deep, etc. I'm just sayin' it ain't nuthin. And I think Nagasaki was 30kt or so, and my quick math has a 5.2 at about twice that, or even a bit more, but I suck at log(x) and all that....

Also, when we had the *very mild* 3.4 here in Venice last year - centered a few hundred meters from my house - it really felt as if a large bomb went off and someone had picked the house up off the foundation and slammed it back onto the ground. Very, very small but not nuthin’. The guys over at Canal Club had lots of poo in their pants and a lot of broken glasses to clean up. And a 5.2 is nearly 100 times stronger ... but of course - back to Louis’ point - this all *pales* in comparison to a real one...

Yep, I have lived in the SF Bay area all of my life and have experienced many quakes including the Loma Prieta quake. Even a 3.x can rattle you if you are close to the epicenter. I was in the grocery store for a 4.x in San Jose once and watched all of the wine bottles come crashing to the floor. It felt like a truck hit the building!

I lived in North San Jose at the time of the 89 quake and was driving on 101 in Sunnyvale. I'm really glad I was not in a building at the time! Would have needed an underwear change after that one. can i just pop in here? it's one thing to have us un(der)informed masses gabbing about breaking news, but when people post breaking news, there's always that huge gap of space while others wait for verification. if there were credentialed people on seesmic verifying news, that lapse when things are urgent won't happen.

whether you hire staff or just try to get users credentialed, that's up to you. but across all subject matter, it would be nice to have an "authority" on there. so say for politics, you should have tried to credentialed some people for the DNC and RNC conventions. real time conversations with delegates, politicians and all that stuff. locally, i use seesmic to get a take on angelenos state of mind. i am going to interview local politicians via seesmic that sort of stuff.

but anything your 'citizen journalists' create can be edited in your office and posted like seesmix or newspop. imo, creating this under newspop would give you a lot more content from places that rachael can't get to.

Also, if there would be a way for users to specify keywords like "business," "politics" etc which would become topics of those news emissions.. like watch-words when they pop-up in some news or media outlet, they are somehow vblogged by volunteer Seesmic users or dedicated stuff and put on Seesmic.

that's the beauty of it, there's so many people online willing to whore themselves out for a logo behind them, they'll do it for free as long as they get promoted, credentialed and have access to contacts. As Chris said, look at CurrentTV. There's a lot of good content there being generated by users. Granted a lot of those users are film school students, rich kids, or people with gov't backing, but for the most part, the content is good. There's just nothing really "current", nor is there conversation.

Loic, do you think about adding a Skype-like calling feat to Seesmic: calling real time/ video conferencing? and surely someone must have mentionned the topical videos. Not only crowd sourcing journalism volunteers - BE sure there are many who would willingly do that off their work and time. Topical videos like social media issues, leadership, how to start a company, etc. IMO there is a HUGE cash-in possibility. Say a video of 5mins feating advice from some VC (?) for 99cents or smth like that?

Sarbanes-Oxley was a kneejerk reaction to appease the masses that wanted some sort of assurance that the markets weren't going to implode. After the dust settles SarbOx will be amended--if not removed--and all will be back 'to normal.' On the same note, expect similar witch hunt and follow-up legislation for this go-around. We're already beginning to see indictments for fraud pertaining to the mortgage markets...

I found the comments about entrepreneurs building low capital investment companies to sell to the larger competitors to be quite interesting. Could it be that these people are valuing personal freedom over still having a set of bosses? My guess is that there are far more people who want to create something, than who want to become 'industry titans' with all that entails. The out come is not always a good place for a person to be - compare Jerry Yang to Steve Jobs, or Larry and Sergei.

I have tons of burner friends, but I've never felt compelled to go. I won't bore you with the list of reasons it fails to interest me. I really enjoy checking out flickr just afterwards though. I've also enjoyed seeing how burner culture is slowly being integrated into mainstream Bay Area life. You can't go to a geeky gathering like Maker's Faire or Yuri's Night without getting a taste of it. Kids and families like (some of) burner culture too. I like it when it's closer to home.

Crude Awakening's total carbon footprint was the equivalent of half a gallon of gas per participant. If you're that concerned about carbon, you shouldn't travel by car anywhere, ever, for anything. Burning Man *looks* extravagantly wasteful of fossil fuel, but the fuel burned simply getting to the event (or any such event) dwarfs all the pyrotechnics. It's kind of ridiculous to go to, say, SxSW, but not to Burning Man, based on ecological consciousness.

back in the early days I was thinking about going but I heard that you had to get your camera registered and that it seemed like such a pain in the ass to get approval to shoot it. I've heard it's lightened up since then though with regards to photography and SLRs.

But that's nothing specific to Burning Man - you would have to give the same answer to the question of whether you go to any other event (SxSW, PAX, E3, Woodstock, AAAS, whatever your thing might be).

I find the enthusiasm of media funny. Media should better direct our country's foreign policy than scoring some brownie points on photoshop disasters. How does it matter if one missile failed. What matters is what we are going to do to stop missile proliferation without using our own missile. Scoring such brownie points are kid's play and not media's.

Comments inline work well, but make it hard to keep a track of whats going on. I guess thats more of a FF issue tho, nested conversations are much more complex than the flat twitterlike comments.

All kidding aside, I had this kind of problem to a degree for a while. For a while I had about 12 blogs I wrote professionally, plus my own personal one. It got to the point where I had diluted my brand. I couldn't say what "my blog" was, or what I blogged about. I had to pull back, focus, and learn to manage "my personal brand".

As I've said a few times when this comes up, it's because FriendFeed is so shiny and new that it goes in waves. You had the first users back in October, then you had the post-beta surge, and now you're seeing the post-Scoble surge, and the post-Twitter issues surge. With more pushing by Steve Rubel, Jeremiah Owyang and Thomas Hawk, this won't go away immediately, but you should see the mix fluctuate. That said, Robert is right. You need to follow more folks who talk about more things.

Twitter is useless. Anyone on twitter is definitely on FF, and if they are not, they are stupid. Having said that, rather than going to twitter to post your little message, that will inevitably end up on and get the most action on FF, you might as well just skip twitter, and go right to the crowded room that is FF.

Here's one way to change this mix: everyone go to Flickr and favorite some photos. Then go and write an interesting blog post. Then do a little video on youTube. Then go to Google Reader and share some interesting stuff. If everyone did that then we would have other things to talk about. Yes, I'm taking my own medicine I'm over at Google Reader right now.

FF can seem almost exclusive to social networking and media stuff. Only it's really not. Want to see what else people are talking about? Go to the everyone tab and type in a search term - baseball, "sex in the city", what I had for dinner, or whatever. You'll likely find lots of conversation about those things, and the people who posted them. And remember you can exclude search terms by putting a - sign in front of them.

fair enough - i'll post some videos to go with the pictures and blog posts that i added this afternoon - and don't get me wrong, i do really enjoy the out-of-tech contributions: Scoble with science, Rubel with with sports, Fred Wilson with NYC and music, Hawk with photos, and much more... in any case, it's more an observation than a criticism, and yes, one that says I should be branching out more to find the optimal mix for my own personal tastes

Of course having a lot more people here is such a wealth! If you don't want to see stuff about twitter or friendfeed, enter this search term: "service:internal who:everyone -twitter -friendfeed" This query will return all the stuff shared from Friendfeed except those that mention twitter or friendfeed. Amazingly, there are posts that talk about other things. Lots of post. (You can change the service parameter to see googlereader, blog, flickr, or whatever.)
