Your essential ‘how-to’ guide to writing good abstracts… - http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impacto...
"Article abstracts typically say little about what the researcher has discovered or what the key findings are, what they are arguing as a ‘bottom line’, or what key ‘take-away points’ they want readers to remember. Here we present a simple ‘how-to’ guide to writing good abstracts." - Dr Jo Badge from Bookmarklet
Fancy pretending you are in Casualty (TV programme, not the real thing!)
The Department of Health and Health Protection Agency run a "live" health emergency planning exercise each year within Strategic Health Authority regions in England. Exercise Greystoke aims to test the ability of the East Midlands emergency services and NHS organisations to respond to a mass casulaty exercise. This is the region's largest "live" emergency planning exercise to date, and they are recruiting volunteers that would benefit from this experience and play as "casualties" in the live element of the exercise, which will take place on the campus of the University of Loughborough on Tuesday 5 July 2011, i.e. after the end of the Semester for those in Phase One. Please find attached a summary with details of how to register. - Dr Jo Badge

Like a one-man tribute band, Steve Jones plays Darwin's greatest hits. Unlike most tribute bands, he delivers a surer performance than the original. He is a more natural raconteur than Darwin and he knows a great deal more about Darwinian descent with modification - Dr Jo Badge from Bookmarklet
Don't forget to check where your exams are taking place!
church.JPG
some new locations this year, including the church shown above - directions and information on the PDF file attached. Exams take palce all over the university, so you may not have been to some of these places before, make sure you know where they are. - Dr Jo Badge
The official timings state that Covenant Life Church is 10-15 mins from main campus, but I'd say more like 20 from the "science" end of the site - Dr Chris Willmott
“Making it up as you go along” may seem an odd title for a careers talk, particularly since Stuart Johnson [BSc(Hons) Biological Science 1995] was acting head of the University’s Careers Service at the time of the presentation. As he points out, however, the choice of title reflects both the route to his current role and the fact that not all undergraduates have a clear career path in mind whilst they are doing their degree. In these increasingly hostile times, however, there are plenty of things you can be doing to enhance your employability, even if you haven’t yet pinned down an exact job to aim towards. - Dr Jo Badge
Some really good tips there. - Roisin Thomas

www.bbc.co.uk/genecode good BBC4 programme : get your free chromosome fridge magnets from the website too!!
I already have these. They come with a nice little guide too. My daughter has arranged them all in pairs on the fridge. She thinks we could use them to play snap. - Roisin Thomas
I ordered these too :) after Roisins recommendation. It's great having them on the fridge! The programme was quite good actually, strange to think that our genomes is made up of a fourfold of amphioxus genes! Very interesting programme, looking forward to the next one. - Jaspreet Seehra
I ordered them to after Roisin told us about them... Yes we are cool! - Lyndsey Wright
I have these, and they're good fun to play with :D - Susan Petherbridge
How on earth can I get some magnets which have been so popularly advertised, but I can't see anywhere to order them? - Jacqueline Bortoft
Finding out how to get a set of magnets is almost as hard as cracking the code - I've watched all th ptogrammes with interest as would love a set. - Jacqueline Bortoft
