"Article abstracts typically say little about what the researcher has discovered or what the key findings are, what they are arguing as a ‘bottom line’, or what key ‘take-away points’ they want readers to remember. Here we present a simple ‘how-to’ guide to writing good abstracts."

Hi Michael A-T: I discovered that doing a self-assessment is quite difficult as in employs you to mention both you good attributes and your not so good attributes and based on the analysis you can develop mechanisms to improve your current status. Making a Prezi was fun =)

Hey guys. I've just joined FriendFeed as part of the FLEX programme.

The Department of Health and Health Protection Agency run a "live" health emergency planning exercise each year within Strategic Health Authority regions in England. Exercise Greystoke aims to test the ability of the East Midlands emergency services and NHS organisations to respond to a mass casulaty exercise. This is the region's largest "live" emergency planning exercise to date, and they are recruiting volunteers that would benefit from this experience and play as "casualties" in the live element of the exercise, which will take place on the campus of the University of Loughborough on Tuesday 5 July 2011, i.e. after the end of the Semester for those in Phase One. Please find attached a summary with details of how to register.

I really struggled to get my head around the Q cycle but I think I know what's going on now. I made a little video of me explaining it in the hopes that A it might help others and B if I'm wrong someone can tell me.

Like a one-man tribute band, Steve Jones plays Darwin's greatest hits. Unlike most tribute bands, he delivers a surer performance than the original. He is a more natural raconteur than Darwin and he knows a great deal more about Darwinian descent with modification

some new locations this year, including the church shown above - directions and information on the PDF file attached. Exams take palce all over the university, so you may not have been to some of these places before, make sure you know where they are.
- Dr Jo Badge
The official timings state that Covenant Life Church is 10-15 mins from main campus, but I'd say more like 20 from the "science" end of the site

“Making it up as you go along” may seem an odd title for a careers talk, particularly since Stuart Johnson [BSc(Hons) Biological Science 1995] was acting head of the University’s Careers Service at the time of the presentation. As he points out, however, the choice of title reflects both the route to his current role and the fact that not all undergraduates have a clear career path in mind whilst they are doing their degree. In these increasingly hostile times, however, there are plenty of things you can be doing to enhance your employability, even if you haven’t yet pinned down an exact job to aim towards.
- Dr Jo Badge
I know you've all a little while before you need to start looking for jobs, but it's interesting to see what experience and qualifications you might need for great looking jobs like this! No harm in getting prepared :-)

I had the same problem, but the deadline has been extended until Tuesday, although it is apparently working again.
- Lindsey Freeman
Thanks, Dr Badge :) They replied back really quickly and it's working for me now. @Lindsey: I know, I'm really glad it's been extended. I had the problem of the site not working too but after it started working again I had a different problem that most others weren't having but the IT help people told me "We've identified an issue with using the : or | characters in a CFS password that...

How important is your choice of modules ? After completing the degree, does it really matter what modules you have done or is the most important thing what grade you have achieved?
I guess that depends on what you want to do when you graduate. You are unlikely to get a PhD studying genetics if you haven't done any genetics modules. I would advise going to see your personal tutor to discuss your options, that is what they are there for.
- Dr Jo Badge
ok I will. Thanks Dr. Jo Badge. But one question on what you just mentioned, I have to do some compulsory genetics modules. So did you mean apart from those compulsory modules I have to do genetics modules, if I want to do a PhD in genetics?
- Paskuwal Kosalie Mendis
It would very much depend on the PhD that you were looking at but you would probably need more subject knowledge than just the compulsory modules for a PhD subject (and a IIi final degree result).Take a look at the CABS presentation on doing a PhD for more information http://biosciencecareers.wordpress.com/2009...
- Dr Jo Badge
I must say, I did a lot of thinking before reaching my final decision regarding module selection. Apart from your personal tutor, it may be worth to speak to your peer mentor. I believe that you (Mendis) and I share the same peer mentor, who is also a 2nd year Medical Genetics student. It would therefore be a good idea to approach them regarding this matter.

Sarah's friendfeed won't let her reply, so this is what she would like to say: Sorry, I should have explained that more clearly. I mean that I've taken a figure from an article, and have cited the source in the figure legend. However, I also want to briefly comment on what the figure shows. I've written this in more detail in the essay itself and have used different sources to do so. Do...

- Laura
If you've said what you need to say in the essay, there's no need to repeat yourself in the figure legend. Make sure the source of the original figure is clear.

On essays, does the "10% over the word limit" ruling apply? I've got about 1050 words on a 1000 word essay, and I'm really struggling to cut it down. At 6th form, we could have 10% over and not be marked down - does this still apply?
Just wondering if any genetics people know when our #2060 presentations are? It seems odd that we have'nt been told yet, so I'm just checking that I haven't missed something?
for medical related students, is the genes #MB1005 exam different to the #BS1005 exam? Apparently, I've heard that we have a separate paper, based on the tutorials ?
Just been told that we have got funding for my summer internship with Dr Cowley... Very excited :)

Congratulations Lyndsey! What will you be doing?

"Dr Adam Rutherford takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride as he explores the consequences of one of the biggest scientific projects of all time - the decoding of the entire human genome in 2000. Adam discovers that every human carries the entire story of life on earth hidden in his or her DNA and sees how we are all linked directly to the origins of life and to the first creatures with backbones. He also investigates the implications of the fact that for much of its existence, the human race was an endangered species."

It's been a few days now I cannot access any of my #MB1005, #MB1004, #BS1015, #BS1006, #MB1031-B, course material on blackboard. I can open my #BS1011 and #BS1010 weekly accessments but not any other information that used to be there. What should I do?
Go to the Help Zone in the Library.

this is not due in until next term, if you have finished this early, please hang on to it. There will be a Turnitin Assignment for you to submit the essay on the BS1008 blackboard site next term. There was a 2010 link for submitting last year, if this is still showing, please don't use it! Email Dr Cane (crc@le) if you have any questions.
- Dr Jo Badge
seriously! well, at least I've got it out of the way. Thanks for finding out... I had the 12th down in my notes as the deadline and now I wonder why.
- Luc Tardy
Perhaps it was the 12 May not April? I don't have the deadlines to hand, but it is due in in May. At least you are one essay down now :-)
- Dr Jo Badge
Just finished the "Darwin" BS1008 essay, does anybody know if we're just meant to submit via turnitin or if we should email it to anyone? Also I have the deadline written down as the 12th but I'm not sure thats right... any ideas?
- Luc Tardy
I'm checking with the convenors, Luc. Please don't use the Turnitin assignment for 2010, just hold on to your essay for now!
- Dr Jo Badge
Hello Luc, Dr Cane is taking care of this. There will be a new Turnitin assignment for you to use nearer the time that the essay is due in (not until the beginning of next term). I suggest you email Dr Cane if you have any other questions.
- Dr Jo Badge
My main aim this week was to get my choices for 2nd and 3rd year chosen. After a good talk with my personal tutor I came to a decision. But I would still like to know what the different modules actually entail as I feel as though I making a decision beased on the mosule title, which makes me feel a bit uneasy. I still cannot believe that the sememster is nearly over as well.
- Yewande O
There are module descriptions on Blackboard which are good in giving you a better idea of what each module entails, if you haven't looked at them already! :)
- Evelyn O'Carroll
Ohh, Evie where can I find these on blackboard btw?? I've looked but cant find it.

Follow the links from the front page of the school office site. Link is 'module descriptions'.

given today's date I'm wondering if I should ask my cat to write my diary for me this week: http://www.youtube.com/watch... he would probably say 'Jo's been busy trying to deal with the problems caused by Blackboard when the third year students submitted their Oral Presentation slides on Monday. In the end it turned out Blackboard wasn't broken, but we used a different submission system that doesn't send email confirmations, so lots of students panicked. Very understandable, but lots of work for her! She is looking forward to getting some writing done once term has finished next week. ' :-) Have a good vacation everyone. Remember that Friend Feed will still be here while you are off campus, a good way to connect with your peers and motivate each other to get some revision done!
- Dr Jo Badge
Its been a good week, got all my work done and handed in before the holidays. Disapointed in my BS1005 essay grade but I kinda get why I didn't do too well... guess I'll just have to make it up come the exams. Its weird that we're on holiday now, not that its going to be very relaxing since I have too much revision to do. Also wondering when our friendfeed assignment for #BS1011 ends, any ideas?
