A lush carpet of lavender stretches as far as the eye can see. This amazing panorama shows how more of Britain will look as global warming prompts farmers to plant vast acres of the aromatic herb. The purple fields will vie with the now-familiar vivid vistas of yellow rape as Britain's rising temperatures make it easier to grow lavender, which flowers between June and August.

"Weekend before last I packed up the Buick with mrsth and the kids and headed out to shoot the “Biggest Little City in the World,” Reno Nevada. I’ve been meaning to shoot Reno for a while now, but somehow just never quite made it out there. I’ve been to Vegas dozens of times, but Reno’s always remained that elusive stepsister of Nevada just out of my reach. I’ve known that I’ve needed to shoot Reno for years of course. I’m collecting images of neon signs and the neon in Reno really is best in class. Maybe it was the worsening recession that finally convinced me. Every day more and more neon signs are coming down. But whatever the case, I made it to Reno just in the nick of time. I spent most of my time in downtown Reno and the best way that I can describe it is that it felt a hell of lot like post Katrina New Orleans. When I visited New Orleans after Katrina I was struck by how devastated the place had become, how broken in many ways the city and the people who lived there were, but at the same time how un

Reno is known as the father of Las Vegas :)
- Pelin Ayan
FWIW, Las Vegas seemed just as busy as it's ever been. It didn't SEEM to be hurting at all.
- Internet's Tad
Great post! Sounds like I'm going to need to get there sooner rather than later.
- Jeremy Brooks
Jeremy, you'd love it. There is so much neon there. But so much of it coming down soon I bet. A lot of the vintage neon is on closed businesses.
- Thomas Hawk
I'm not sure how much of a role the sorry economy has played on Reno, but even before the crash, it looked like New Orleans post Katrina.
- Davis Freeberg
Thomas, I got the same feeling when I was there this weekend. I brought my camera, but just didn't feel motivated to shoot anything with how run-down it all was. The local media and government are just starting to catch-on to Social Media though, so it will be very interesting to see if that improves what happens there or not. I was impressed with the excitement at this Interactive Media conference I keynoted at there on Saturday.
- Jesse Stay
Thomas, I am sorry we didn't cross paths while you were here! Excellent post by the way, I have shared it with a number of other locals.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
I like that you added portraits of the people you met. I've met some many people through my photography. The Motor Lodge shots brought back childhood family vacation memories as we drove through Reno.
- Russellreno
kudos Mr H. so well done. this should go into boing boing and alike.

Really interesting post, terrific pictures as ever but the stories make them even better

I love Reno. I was there during a Burning Man road trip. My take away image of the place? A little old lady wheeling her oxygen to and from the slot machines. I could swear she had a cigarette hanging off her mouth.
- sean808080
Nicholas, will have to try and catch up on another trip. I only had 36 hours for this one so there wasn't really time to do a photowalk. I'm sure I'll be back to Reno though quite a bit to shoot more and do a photowalk or two. There's still so much more I'd like to shoot there. I pretty much just scratched the surface with this trip.

Hawk kestrel manoeuvres in the park: Thousands of starlings form the shape of a giant bird of prey in spectacular dawn sight - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news...
Swooping low in the evening sky, tens of thousands of starlings combine in perfect harmony as they gather to roost. In an astonishing natural display of formation flying, they took the shape of a bird of prey looming in the skies above Taunton. Normally at the mercy of a kestrel or a deadly sparrowhawk like the one they appear to be mimicking, this swift-moving flock of starlings, known as a murmuration, finds safety in numbers.

looks like I'll be sticking with vista as I got stuck with a HP with one a year ago, and it doesn't look like MS will be kind to us

Shhhhhhhh Pj, that's a secret! Don't tell too many people or MSFT will resurrect the Seinfeld / Gates ads again. Oh, the horror.

Users who buy Vista machines between July 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010 will be eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade. Will anyone purchase a computer before July 1st?
- Phillip Stewart
Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like Like. Ooops. Take that back.
- Martha
Anybody who EVER bought a machine with Vista should get a free upgrade.
- jcunwired
Booo! No free upgrade for those of us with vista pre2009... B etter only be a $50 upgrade. :P
- Internet's Tad
I'm so confused. Why is everyone so excited about this? They always do this. When a new OS has been announced (and is being rolled out to manufacturers), they give free copies to users who buy computers without the OS pre-installed. Apple does the same thing, allowing people who bought computers within 20 days or so of a new model/release to return it and get the new one (difference is, Microsoft's releases are announced way in advance and must cover more time since it's more difficult to roll out.
- Brandon Titus
This really isn't much of a story since they did the exact same thing just before the Vista launch. Customers who bought new machines with XP got a voucher for a free upgrade to Vista. The real story would be if Microsoft DIDN'T offer the same free upgrade this time.
- Ken McNamee
I just bought a new laptop running Vista. I have used XP up until now, just getting used to Vista. I doubt I would change OS for quite a while.
- Edward Kimble
The delicious title is a bit misleading, almost troll-ish. The actual title of the article is "Will There Be a Free Upgrade to Windows 7?". Free upgrades a few months before the actual release is nothing new. If they offer it free for all Vista users I'd be very impressed.

If Microsoft did give Win7 as a free upgrade to vista it will help them in many ways. It will help keep Vista sales going, as stories are starting that people are already waitting for 7 to come out. It will help makeup with people that thought they got ripped off with Vista. Lastly it may slow down or stop apple adds that attack Vista day after day.

-Grinding album opener, "In Chains", is instantly grabbing with its tortured carousel machine music, and assures one that Gahan, Gore and Fletcher are back and have brought a lot to the table this time around. Do these guys even age? You wouldn't have a clue here. -A haunting synth line that could be a long lost cousin of John Carpenter's brilliant Halloween theme palpitates through the lengthy spine of "Come Back", a mysterious, hypnotic vortex of a track that might just be the very sound at the center of the Mode's universe. A fine instrumental follows in the form of astral "Spacewalker".

"A picture of an armed sheriff moving through an American home after an eviction due to a mortgage foreclosure won the top prize in the World Press Photo competition Jury members said the strength of the photo by Anthony Suau for Time magazine was in its opposites - it looks like a classic war photograph, but is simply the eviction of people from a house"

There's some incredible pictures in here. It's an emotional roller coaster. This first one is not my favorite, even though I can see the reasoning behind their choice. It's hard to pick one, there's so many great shots:-)

I love the one in the caption. I was embedded with Sheriff's dept for 2 weeks and I have so many photos like this one. Unfortunately they can't be made public.
- Sean Davis
That sheriff kind of looks like he's never actually had to hold a gun before. I feel like if he had actually needed to fire that thing, he would have ended up smacking himself in the face with it.

Nice summary. The sizes of the slices are a bit misleading though. They've made the diameters of the circles, rather than the areas, proportional to the dollar amounts.
