To require research to result in "demonstrable benefits to the economy, society, public policy, culture and quality of life" is, even if it were achievable, impossibly constraining. Blue skies thinking, which may be transformative, is endangered.

YEARS AGO I WAS interviewed by a dogmatic pacifist (note to self: bad idea), who in his (grossly inaccurate) write-up said he thought I wanted all activists to think like assassins. That’s not true. What I want is for us to think like members of a serious resistance movement.

Early human societies had primitive and inefficient ways of collecting resources, so those that thrived were ones that developed high rates of consumption and new innovations for resource gathering. They also had built up strong identity with their own community and competitiveness with others, and short-term thinking (discounting the future).

AS WORLD leaders arrive in Copenhagen for the crunch phase of the climate conference, the focus turns to what kind of deal is likely to emerge. Pre-eminent climate scientist Prof James Hansen of the Nasa Goddard Institute has already given the entire process the kiss of death. Any political deal cobbled together is, he believes, likely to be so profoundly flawed as to lock humanity on to “a disaster track”, writes JOHN GIBBONS

Since 1965, the percentage of graduates of highly-ranked business schools who go into consulting and financial services has doubled, from about one-third to about two-thirds. And while some of these consultants and financiers end up in the manufacturing sector, in some respects that’s the problem.

Israel has admitted that pathologists harvested organs from dead Palestinians, and others without the consent of their families – a practice that it said ended in the 1990s, it emerged at the weekend.

15 years ago, the web didn’t look the way that it does now. The web was dull, unattractive and less visually appealing. Interacting with web pages was not possible, and the web was simply a static information space.

Reading Davies, one longs for a return to the golden era of an incorruptible and conscientious media. But did such an era ever exist? Strangely, Davies devotes almost no space in his book to examining the history of journalism or to testing his implied hypothesis that journalists were once successful at truth-telling.

n February 1988, Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin discreetly told the Israeli army to break the bones of Palestinians rising up during the first Palestinian intifada. According to the testimony of Israeli soldiers, Colonel Eitam relayed the message to his Givati Brigade, then occupying Gaza. On 7 February, he ordered four of them to break the bones of two brothers from al-Bureij refugee camp.

Rick Warren should be prosecuted in the United States for his human rights violations abroad as outlined in Federal law. He could also be brought to the Hague if this law is enacted. It would be for the better of the world if he were taken out of circulation and put behind bars as while he isn't taken seriously in the US by many, he apparently has some pull abroad.

Mr Davis is adamant that he is not a "denier" of climate change and accepts that it has "probably" been caused by human activity. But he is worried about the economic cost of meeting emissions targets. He wants other voices to be heard in the debate and a "middle way" found instead of the name-calling between "deniers and liars" on each side.

I do not know why people need to drum up fake stories about Islam in order tp spread fear about it, and singling it out is sort of weird. Now if you want to look at the dangers of theorcratic regimes in general, you could be on to something.

Since the reported theft of emails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, conservative media figures have aggressively claimed that those emails undermine the overwhelming scientific consensus that human activities are causing climate change, dubbing the supposed scandal "Climategate." But these critics have largely rested their claims on outlandish distortions and misrepresentations of the contents of the stolen emails, greatly undermining their dubious smears.

About 45 minutes ago, the Wave was opened with just a few people in it. Already, there are over 100 people in here now communicating quickly with updates. Included are Wave elements with links to police scanner audio, live video footage of the search, a suspect description, and information about local schools on lockdown. It’s actually quite amazing to watch this unfold and get updated before your very eyes.
