The Awful Making of an Optimist is a book by American designer, photographer and writer James A. Reeves (aka kinosport). James drove around America and documented what he saw in the book through writing and photography. The back cover reads: "There was a time when the road to manhood was clear: go to war, find a job with a big company, wear a tie, and start a family. Then the wars got strange and companies changed. What does it take to be a man in America today? Here is an answer as sprawling and chaotic as the country itself… One day James realized he no longer understood his country or what he should be doing in it. He decided to go for a drive to clear his head. The Awful Making of an Optimist is a scattershot journey through the neon corridors and dark corners of America. Cattle auctions in Texahoma. Oil fires burning across the Venice Jump Basin. Kids collecting cosmic rays in the desert. Subway preachers in Brooklyn and security concerns along the Mississippi. My first 7D 720p HD video - very difficult to control the focus. How do you guys do it?! Also noted that I definitely need to use an IS lens if I'm not using a tripod for videos....!!! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

@Trace Thanks for the tutorial link. Helpful! #smlthankyou - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
One more thing I noticed is that while I usually don't care much about white balance shooting raw - I can't really do that with video as it's already compressed when I get the video, and tweaking white point on the video is close to impossible to get weird color artifacts... I wonder if you can shoot video raw... :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

"This chart was shown at the official NikonD3s launch event in Beijing – you can see the Nikon logo at the top right corner. Nikons pro DSLRs outsell Canons big time. Not sure if this data is only for China or worldwide. I am surprised by the large % of D3x sales (dark blue bars). I think in few months the D3s will make this graph look even worse (for Canon that is)." - Holger Eilhard from Bookmarklet
Did the D3x really take 40% of the pro market the first month it was available? As a Canon shooter, I hope this lights a fire under their ass to bring us something more appealing! - Brian Johns

One thing that I notice on the Canon 7D is that there appears to relatively strong chromatic aberration on my images - a characteristic I never noticed before using the same lenses with the 10D. Why is that?

Canon 7D first impression: 1. OMG these RAW files are HUGE! I am used to the seeing 5MB from the 10D but the these are 25MB each! 2. The AF is nice, but the AF point selection takes some time to get used to 3. The Auto ISO is sweet 4. The wireless flash remote is cool - but doesn't seem to work as well as the ST-E2 5. 720p shooting is at 60fps.
haven't had the time to process anything yet. busy doing some other stuff :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Ha, if you think the 7D RAWs are huge, you should check out the 5DII's. =) For AF point selection, not sure if you know about it but there is an option where you can use the little control nub to make your selection without having to hit the point select button first. Auto ISO is definitely nice but Canon's implementation still lags behind Nikon's unfortunately. Nikon allows you far greater control of the parameters behind it. - ronin
Holy crap, 25mb RAW files? - veo
@ronin oh ic C-Fn? I will check that out. It's not too much of an issue right now - when I was playing with the AF last night I was smoking at the same time so index finger lacking action on the M-Fn. I like that you can choose between point vs area. This would definitely come into handy when I do macro shots! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I wish that there's an option to shoot 720p 24fps but it appears that the 24fps 25fps and 30fps are reserved for 1920x1080 HD shooting. This would blow my HDD space soon.. since FiOS doesn't come to my neighborhood, backups have been insane to do - it's automatic to http://jungledisk.com but it's mind-blowing to see that I have 2 days remaining to upload before I can move (I have been planning to move to Hong Kong for a while now but I don't want to do that before my stuff is backed up!!!) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Yeah the M-Fn button is new as are the new selectable AF modes. Pretty cool but one more thing to get used to fiddling around with. =) As for backing up your photos, does it have to be in the cloud? Would be faster/easier to just pick up an external HD. 1TB is pretty cheap these days. - ronin
I do backup physically on external HD, but I need the cloud backup also so that in case of fire they won't get burned. These 25MB RAW + resulting 200MB psd files are so huge that I think that I am gonna start deleting files that I flag as rejects. Previously I generally keep everything in my catalog - because somehow when technology pushes forward, new development techniques can turn rejects into usable things. Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos... (see description) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Nice shot! But yeah it's pretty amazing how much data you can pull back from a seemingly blown shot these days. - ronin
thanks. But yes - I think that the H+S was especially a nice thing that Photoshop implemented. Not too grate for opening shadows up but definitely works well for pulling things down. - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Hard drives are cheap... - mjc from iPhone
I don't mind the large files. I'm mainly concerned with my cloud storage backup. No FiOS in my neighborhood yet so upload is a bitch. - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
oh btw I just noted that there is a better version of the shot above, processed in B+W: http://www.flickr.com/photos.... I think that B+W has a lot more potential with tonal range expansion + H+S processing - in some way you can see it as pixel count up - would it, for example, be possible to count each R/G/B channel as a separate pixel, remove their color info, and render an ultra 3x resolution image? I just wonder, that's all. - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
ok you know what, per your comment I checked out the HDD pricing and noted that you can get 1TB at <$100 these days?!?!?! OMG!!! Can anyone of you recommend any external RAID enclosure or similar? I currently have 4 external drives + 4 internal drives + 2 network drives and this is getting out of hand. I think that I should start thinking about other options, maybe a rack solution? Just something to keep everything tidy... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

Oh crap Photoshop CS4 won't open my Canon 7D Raw files. Will just have to do it in Lightroom for now :(
Did you update your Adobe RAW to the latest 5.5? It unofficially supports the 7D but it should open the RAW files up. - ronin
oh awesome. Thanks for the tip! #smlthankyou - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
I had to reinstall my complete OS two weeks ago and I thought that they are up to date enough. Clearly the Adobe Updater is not set to alert me anything :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
BTW, Adobe just released RAW 5.6 which officially lists the 7D as being supported: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki... - ronin
It means nothing they delete it anyway :)) - Lars Clausen

"These times are strange. Five years ago if you walked onto the set of a movie, TV show, or music video -- before you got kicked out by a strung out production assistant -- you'd have probably seen a bustling group of workers huddled around a giant camera changing out huge spools with Kodak or Fujifilm logos on them. The RED ONE camera shook up the industry when it was released two years ago and those cans of film were replaced with hard-drives and digital technicians. Now, we're in the midst of another monumental camera shift, and it's not the 3D revolution that everyone predicted. Nope, in 2009 we make our movies on DSLRs. Just how good are they? Well, the recently released Canon EOS 7D may just be the new Engadget workhorse. Read on for the inside scoop on our ridiculously cinematic new rig." - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML from Bookmarklet

The review recommends using Samson ZoomH4N (picture 3) as external 24-bit / 96kHz audio source. $300 http://www.engadget.com/2009... - I am using the Sony MZM200 Hi-MD recorder right now which works quite well http://pro.sony.com/bbsc... $439.95 - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Altertnatively you can also consider: + Sony PCMM10/B $399.99 http://pro.sony.com/bbsc... + Sony PCMD50 $599.99 http://pro.sony.com/bbsc... + Sony PCMD1 http://pro.sony.com/bbsc... $1,999.95 - all of which does 24-bit / 96 kHz recording, and PCMM10/B in particular is tiny and easy to carry around but it does not have a built-in mic. - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

Good choice! Is it charged yet? :D - Adrian
no.. clearly I've always forgotten that when a new toy arrives it needs to charge! This is also the first SLR I bought where I've got the battery grip as I'm doing many vertical shots now and I thought that it'd be handy - interesting to note is that by using the battery grip I can also apparently get an AC adapter for continuing powering. Didn't know that before.. so I'm glad that I got it (but AC adapter is sold separately so I guess I'll have to get that also...) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

it's all marketing hype i tell you.... how does one explain the poor QC on a number of M8 bodies and some lenses in their line up.... but when the lenses are good they are good... - JediPein
@JediPein I've never own any Leica. I thought that it's too expensive to spend $2000 on a camera body - meanwhile I just bought a new 7D. Somehow Leica seems like a luxury item I cannot afford (something that was imprinted in my mind) whereas Canon appears to be affordable technology to me. Interesting branding / marketing imprints... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML

I have a hard decision to make: a new SLR. I have been eye'ing the 5D Mk II since before its launch, but then 7D came along. I am attracted by 7D's 19-all-cross-type AF points, but want the full-frame. So I am wondering if anyone have an opinion on the AF points on 5DMkII? Fast focusing is ideal - can't afford the 1D. #canon #photography #tools
Does it need to be Canon? You don't have to compromise if you don't want to. The D700 has 51 AF points and is full frame. - Benjamin Golub
It does need to be a canon. I own too many lenses to switch. :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Ah, then you are in a bind. I went from a D40 to a D700 but seriously considered the 5D mk II because I hadn't invested in expensive glass yet. The reason I stayed with Nikon was because I did not like the 5D mk II AF system - Benjamin Golub
What don't you like about the AF on 5D mk II? - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
(I wonder if Nikon has a competitor crossgrade program similar to many software tools...) Maybe someone should start a canon-to-nikon + nikon-to-canon program! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
@Benjamin.Golub What I meant was: Does the 5D MkII have focusing issues (slowness) or are you simply referring to the number of AF points? - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
For my reference 5DMkII whitepaper https://docs.google.com/filevie... - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
If the full frame is important, 5D... other than that 50D... The 7D is just a latest & greatest 1.6. I doubt you will notice some great AF that makes your images any better. If I had it to do over.. the 5D although I'm quite pleased with my 50D. I don't really think relying on a camera to take pix is important. People are killin other photags all day with rebels. The 7D is just a marketing move to fill a gap Nikon has covered. - Signal7
I think it depends on what you shoot on a regular basis. People have called the 5DII a one-AF point camera. I personally don't think it's THAT bad although things does occasionally get a little iffy with the outer points in low light. Also, AI Servo works best with the center point (plus the 6 assist points). It really is pretty crappy with the other points. I feel that the 7D does have... more... - ronin
Lenses are improving as quickly as sensors. When I went digital, I had a number of Nikon lenses - I kept a 35mm 1.4 and a 50mm 1.4, but got rid of the others. Even if a full-frame option had been available, I don't think I would have kept my old lenses. So unless you have a collection of L glass, you may find that newer lenses are sharper. - John Craft
Thanks for all your input! #smlthankyou Quick AF is important to me for my photojournalism shots. And yes I do have a collection of L glass. I just looked into the 5D2 on B+H and after tax it came up to $3000 with no change. Ouch. I guess I will give 7D a whirl then. The viewfinder is really sweet. - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
@ronin so you own the 7D? Oh interesting to note. I will definitely investigate this further... :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
@Signal7 I don't believe that equipment makes photos better. However, my 10D is *really* showing its age. It's also closing into its 60,000 shutter cycle. So I must upgrade. :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
@SML I have both the 5D2 and the 7D. I use the 7D primarily for chasing my kid around outside. Otherwise I like me some FF. =) - ronin
@ronin Just look into 5D2 further. Single cross-type AF point. Ouch. Based on 'chasing kids around outside' statement, I guess I will likely get the 7D then - I don't chase kids, but I chase lots of people around daily. Just read the 7D brochure re the new AF system - sounds like the 1D. Also checked it out at the store and the viewfinder is super sweet. I think that I'm set here. Thanks for all your feedback! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Yeah I'm really hoping they move the 7D AF over to whatever the 5D2's successor will be. I can only assume the reason they didn't do it for the 5D2 to begin with was cause it wasn't ready until now. - ronin
5D3. So excited! ...and so glad I didn't make the 5D2 purchase last year. This is a dream. I guess I can forget about the full-frame for now. It's been 3 years since I had the time to do landscape photography... wonderful memories (not knowing how to drive a car does not help) :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
ok dropped the ball and bought the 7D. Arriving on Monday. psyched!!! - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Woh sorry I missed the rest of this thread! To answer your question: I didn't like the 5D mk II because it felt slower to me than the D700. Also a little clumsy but that could just be because I'm used to the Nikon way of doing things. I think you'll be happy with the AF on the 7D. And you can always sell the 7D to fund the next FF body Canon comes out with which is sure to have the improved AF system. - Benjamin Golub
This is true because I'm slow when I get to play with a Nikon. It takes me a second. I have a Kawasaki. When I get on a Suzuki, it DOES take me a second to get it together. - Signal7
@Signal7 ??? Kawasaki + Suzuki are bikes no? :) - See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
