Really bugs me when people say 'literally' and mean 'figuratively'. Republican strategist Todd Harris on MSNBC just now: "The thing Palin needs to do is literally reach through the TV and grab those working Americans..." Uhh, isn't that setting the bar a bit high, Todd?
That's like when people say theory instead of hypothesis. If it sounds better, then it naturally makes sense :-P
- Nick Humphries
haha, and when people use 'nonplussed' for 'nonchalant'.or 'decimate' when they don't mean 1/10th.
- Admiral Anika
Wow, that is remarkable that Todd Harris wouldn't understand the English language well enough to understand that what he is suggesting is absolutely impossible.
- Nicholas Kreidberg
(reviving an old thread) It turns out this is a canard. In English, literally literally means figuratively, and decimate does mean reduce. There's a good article about this here: http://www.npr.org/templat... -- that contains various quotes from Jane Austen, Alcott, Twain, and Fitzgerald using literally to mean figuratively.
- j1m
I only say literally if I mean literally. And I'm not entirely sure Todd Harris is wrong about what Palin needs to do to win. :-P
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I hear the veep say it quite a bit these days. Makes me a little crazy watching his press conferences sometimes.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
from iPhone
Heard a sportscaster say "It's literally a do or die game!" That got my attention.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Often, in current usage, "It's literally" is functionally equivalent to "Hear Ye, Hear Ye!" - it's simply a device to emphasize what follows.
- Micah Wittman
Is that a command Karma? If so, then, Micah, you are correct.
- Mitch
Now I'll have to google-up an essay, can't remember the who or the where, but a linguist that was building a thesis for the modern use of "like" (like... think Valley-Girl 'like'). Besides literally just reading the literature, she used discussions between her teenage daughter and her friends as sampling.
- Micah Wittman
She found 'like' was actually being used in a variety of modes, that it was relatively complex language phenomenon.
- Micah Wittman
No. Mitch, just a shorthand, but I am sure he appreciated it. :-)
- Karma Martell
If you want a great series of essays describing the perversion of English, check out "What Orwell Didn't Know."

Mitch, I'll have to read that. You might also enjoy this essay: "To See Truly Through a Glass Darkly: C. S. Lewis, George Orwell, and the Corruption of Language" | http://www.orthodoxytoday.org/article...

this was mentioned in an episode of "how i met your mother", the one with the interventions, in the 3rd or 4th season:) Ted character would be correcting these all the time, however even since then, I guess I am using it in the wrong way.. well, at least I'm not a native-speaker-anchor-tv person:)

If you design web pages, know how to set up, calibrate and SPL a home theater, play Rock Band 2 on your 360, have a 360 AND a PS3, you are definitely a nerd. I don't even have to get in to your photoshop and other Adobe product skills.
@ Alex, you also forgot my Wii.....
- Chris Greene
If you use friendfeed and Facebook, you're a nerd.
- Alex Scoble
You have all 3 major game systems? AutoNerd!
- Alex Scoble
Since I only use them about 1 hour a month again I think that qualifies as a stupid consumer, not a nerd.
- Chris Greene
If you have an opinion on which is better T2 vs Jurassic Park? Nerd! If you can converse for hours on why Star Wars 5 is the best Star Wars? Nerd!
- Alex Scoble
If you surf you get a free pass out of nerd land, but I am not sure if this guy does? Alex what do you think? http://bit.ly/F7Lvy
- Luke Kilpatrick
That makes the entire male population of the United States between the ages of 24 and 46 nerds. Not possible.
- Chris Greene
Definitely no free passes for the likes of Robert or Chris...Nerds!
- Alex Scoble
I don't think that makes you a nerd or steals your soul.
- Chris Greene
I don't own a PS3 but I do have more screen real estate in my living space than bed real estate <---- Nerd
- Luke Kilpatrick
Maybe we need to start, you might be a nerd if....
- Luke Kilpatrick
that conversation starts and ends with: You might be a nerd if you make up 'you might be a nerd if' lists. Long live nerds!

If you have a pink Domo named Ducky, you are a nerd. :p
- Alex Scoble
from IM
OH god. I should hope so. Otherwise I'd have to stop being Nerd President of the local Nerd Chapter and that would break my heart.
- pea
My friend Sam and I argue about nerds vs geeks all the time. I tend to say they're the same thing. He says they're 2 diff types and geeks are somehow cooler. Semantics at this point I think. Either way, no one is handing out cash prizes for either.
- pea
Yeah, I agree with you, Pea, that they are synonymous.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Who knew? I always thought I was a nerd, but you've proven otherwise.
- Glen Campbell, esq.
Glen, don't be so hard on yourself...I've given no reason why you can't be a nerd...just reasons why you can be a nerd. Umm, wait a minute...you are on friendfeed...You're a nerd! I don't know what you are talking about.
- Alex Scoble
Hmmmm, confused. I'm on FF and Facebook. Have an XBox 360, an iPhone and I can use filters in both Photoshop AND Aperture. But I ride a real bike, run, snowboard and lift actual free weights. What am I?
- Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, you deliberately started an argument with me about TVs just for fun...you are definitely a nerd.
- Alex Scoble
I'd like to fill out an application to be considered a nerd (or geek) please.
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
Jannifer, Send a photoshopped photo of you playing PS3 and send it using XBox-Live to your FF-feed.

YAY! Alex says if I commented on this thread I'm a nerd! *jumps up and down* :-)
- Jannifer @wordsforliving
I only design web pages, but that just means I'm a *broke* nerd
- Louis Simoneau
I don't have Rock Band/GH nor want to play them. I have two 360's and PS3 Slim[e] (for Blu-rays), though. I hope I'll never lose me geek/nerd -status :o
- Jemm
I play Rock Band but I don't have a 360 and I suck at photoshop.
- Faraz Mullick
I kinda sorta play at designing web pages, not sure I could do that thing with the home theatre (but I can make all the wires go to the right places), play Rock Band 2 (and Beatles and Guitar Hero) on the 360, but don't have a PS3, and kinda kinda sorta play at Photoshop. I use Friendfeed obsessively but Facebook only a little. Jurassic Park is better than T2, and didn't we already discuss Star Wars 5 and you DIDN'T think it was the best? Have you come to your senses on that finally?
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Incidentally, is Rock Band as good a judge of nerd-dom as something like Oblivion or Gears of War or [insert name of RPG/FPS/RTS/etc]? I know a lot of non-nerds who don't play video games in general, but they'll play Rock Band.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
SouthPark has only parodied GH and not yet Rock Band. Until they do I say RB is safe.
- Chris Greene
In response to is Zooomr dead here's my fave and commenting state from ipernity, zooomr, friendfeed and flickr (and for comments i include my site, twitter and pingbacks. Of course this is anecdotal as my photography could have simply been better / worse for the spikes and troughs
it'd definitely going to take me a while to get to a million. I'm publishing about 200 photos to flickr a week right now and at this pace it will take 92 years to get there. I'll get the pace up to 400-500 a week in the future though. Better technology should make processing easier and someday my kids will be grown and I'll be able to quit my day job and focus on this even more. The best photos have yet to be taken.
- Thomas Hawk
When I think about this I realize your best days are ahead of you.
- Russellreno
What's your shot/publish ratio? I mean, on average how many shots do you take to produce those you publish?
- Yuval Atzmon
atzmon, I probably average about 2,000 shots a week that I shoot. And I'm probably processing 300 or so of those a week at present, so I'm probably keeping about 15%. The other 85% never get processed and are kept in my archives. I'm trying only to process and publish the shots that I think meet a certain quality criteria.
- Thomas Hawk
You upload a lot more than I do. I have about 40,000 pictures but only about 2000 uploaded. Mostly because I have not gotten around to processing more. =)
- Jauder Ho
from twhirl
Jauder, the good news is that processing will only get easier in the future. I've watched it get better with each successive Adobe release. Lightroom 2.0 is the best processing tool yet. It's not necessarily faster per se though because with more tools there are yet even more ways to tweak a photo hence even more time. But the tools to speed things up are coming too. auto geotagging, better anti dust tech, faster processing speeds, easier online tools with faster broadband are all around the corner.
- Thomas Hawk
16,000 ?? Yikes. Cool number. Congrats.
- Charlie Anzman
This photo is total awesome. It is made even more awesome by the knowledge that there are 15,999 more photos just as awesome as this one. EDIT: This photo is now my desktop background. :)

Always loved that quote " The best photos have yet to be taken. - Thomas Hawk"

Congrats, I even don't think I took so many photos in my life. :)

@thomas: Yahoo should be giving Flickr to you for free. You'd do a great job with it. And it would be historical: the first user-generated (company) acquisition :)))

I guess the metier of 'photo editor' is kaput...or, at least, greatly altered....
- Chris Gulker
You know they are going to delete your account without warning once you hit 999,999, right? :)
- Ace
Ace, I hope not, I'd be so pissed. Actually I think alot of what gets me so upset about all the content/account deletion issues is that I really do worry that it actually will happen to me. Flickr staff hates me and they'd *love* to delete my account. I worry that I'll wake up one morning and everything will have been nuked. I suppose that's why I'd like to see them enact the ability to...
- Thomas Hawk
Holyshit! You have taked just couple of photos...
- k00pa
Because this post is from September last year k00pa :)
- Simon Wicks
@Chris Gulker. Someday I hope to work with a photo editor. God knows I need to. I like to think of my Flickrstream today more as the raw material in a lot of ways for future projects. A good photo editor adds tremendous value to shaping a photographer's imagery.

"Photographer saw this kid walking, so it wasn't that she is disabled. Click through the picture to see photographer's notes. You will need a Flickr account to view though."
- Dave Roth

The WAL-E comments were spot on. I feel bad for the kid.
- Andy Roth
An interesting theory - though the cynical side of me says it is just more wishful thinking. Having been disappointed in the last several keynotes, I'm determined not to get my hopes up this time.
- Andy Roth
And you're right to think / feel that way, Andy. It's possible that Apple were working on the concept of a tablet before even the iPhone. Or that the iPhone is an off-shoot of the tablet, in a form factor that was more appropriate for a current market segment of the time (which clearly it is). BTW, I'm the author of the article.
- Wayne Smallman
pretty soon it'll be time for someone to start another FF-like service. This is BS. I really hope they don't delete ff.com and integrate it with facebook.

Aw, I thought you were talking about Body Count's hit song
- Rodfather
Rodfather: 1UP for Body Count. I may still have that CD somewhere.
- ha3rvey (business time)
just as i was caught up in reading the great conversation from robert scoble re: friendfeed...i come up for air and see this announcement. color me nervous for FriendFeed.
- Tobin Truog
Maybe I'm naive, but I'm not understanding how this news is either good or bad.
- Dave Roth
From a customer perspective, Dave, it's needless change that clouds the future of the service. And have you been on Facebook lately? They aren't exactly responsive to their customers, nor do they care much about privacy/content rights of their customers.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
also, you'd better delete any content (photos for instance) you posted in your feed that you don't want FB to own when they get their claws in.

I had a great time this afternoon hanging out with my Pal Tom Hogarty, Product Manager for Adobe Lightroom, on the 2nd Annual Scott Kelby NAPP Worldwide Photowalk in San Francisco. Tom led a great two hour walk around the Adobe’s San Francisco offices which included lots of modern architecture, old cars, graffiti, and some really cool warehouse grit that you find around Townsend Street there.
- Thomas Hawk
Apparently there were 900 of these photowalks today all over the world. Very cool indeed. I was super happy with the shots that I got. I put together a set of 50 of my shots from this afternoon here: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Thomas Hawk
Dang? How do I fail to find out about these until after they happen!?
- Bill Sanders
from iPhone
I did the photowalk in my town (Frederick, MD) and had a lot of fun. I was surprised how many other photo-geeks there are in this area. I'm grateful to Kelby et al for organizing this, though I was a bit off-put by the corporate/marketing slant they put to it.

don't show this around orange county! lots of fires out this way and there are ashes all over the ground here at my office. when you walk outside, the ashes blow all over the place with each step. makes me wonder what we're breathing!
- Morgan Haley
students will be picketing two [edit: 3, not 2] of our local representatives tomorrow over the firing of Myra Forrest. These reps have already said that they really can't do anything about the situation but that they thought the board should rescind their decision!
I do not think their demonstration will change the outcome of this sad situation but I applaud and fully support the students' refusal to let this go! I will not be letting it go either.
- Jim in Real Time
What can the representatives do? From what I've read, what the school board did, while reprehensible, was not illegal. (And in watching the YouTube videos, I still cannot stand the board members' accents.)
- Dave Roth
I agree totally, Dave. They've said they can't do anything, and I'm sure if they could have, it would have been done already. But I also admire the students for bringing the fight. It's good for them... and it's good for us (apethetic, voting) adults, whose fault this really is, to see it too.
- Jim in Real Time
This reminds me of the student involvement during the 1988 Union TOOLS' (I mean, teachers') strike at Owen J. Roberts. Very interesting indeed. #OJR
- Dave Roth
So, wait - the students are picketing people that already support them, but don't have authority to intervene?
- Jennifer Dittrich
I think it is good for them to be involved (one heck of a civics education), but I'm thinking that picketing the school board members' houses might have a bit more impact.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I was part of those "demonstrations" in '88, and though they may have had little to do with ending the strike, it did make us feel like we were doing what we could and being involved. Hopefully the same will be true for these students.
- Andy Roth
It's a good point, Jennifer. I've got a few things in mind myself regarding taking the fight to the board members. The students may not have thought it through, but I'm sure they will. They're no dummies. At the very least, the legislators will know that the kids themselves are pushing the movement forward... perhaps that will help them think of some things they CAN do.
- Jim in Real Time
In 2007 Photographer Bill Wadman traveled around the United States and Europe with a single mission. Each day he photographed, edited and posted online a different portrait of a different person. It was a mammoth effort meticulously followed that resulted in one of the most authentic collection of portraits I’ve ever seen. The result, entitled simply 365 Portraits is a significant and beautiful collection of images. I was honored to have been included as a subject in Bill’s Project and think the photo that he took of me is one of the best I’ve ever seen. While Bill shot some famous people in his book (like Astronaut Buzz Aldrin) I found some of his most compelling portraits to be those of everyday people as part of their everyday lives. Here are some of my favorites:
- Thomas Hawk
These portraits are very impressive. It is hard enough just taking a good picture every day, but to take a great portrait of a different person each day for a year is just amazing. I'm very tempted by this book.
- Andy Roth
I bought mine earlier today. I think it's an interesting project with tremendous results and I think it's also a good way to support an artist directly financially while owning a very unique book by an emerging American photographer. Bill's still young and I think he has a huge future ahead of himself as a portrait artist and look forward to his future projects.
- Thomas Hawk
Zee - this is an very thoughtful and complete review. Thanks for taking time to write such a good one. With support like this we'll be able to realize our potential!
- Fraser
First time I've heard of this ... I think.
- Kittyburgers
@Mohomed Abdullahi - it's the first time it's been done like this. Glue uses semantics to connect you to friends around a common object regardless of the website you visit. Example: if you visit The Hangover on IMDB and I visit it on RottenTomatos, we're connected and able to read one another's review. Much different and more powerful than anything else out there.
- Fraser
I don't like this concept much; cause it decreases the viewable area of the web page on my screen
- Ozkan Altuner
Isn't this the same company that had...oh, what was it called. Blue Dot? Something like that. For bookmarking that was semantically smart? I liked it, but I never spent enough time with it to really make it powerful. Is that still around?
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
@AJ...I found it on accident this morning....was actually searching for the T-Pain Taylor Swift song. I've watched this vid about 5x today. Cracks me up everytime

I noticed you were using a heat gun the other day to get the coals fired up for the skirt steak experiment. Is that not SOP?

I've got a Weber that uses a 10 minute gas starter for regular charcoal. Best of both worlds.
- Sam Pullara
i need a second chimney starter, never seem to get enough coals going with just the one.
- Joe Silence
I've found that 2 or 3 is better than one. For one you can always get more coals started, and you've got an extra if you lose one!
