It's always been my assumption that links are added and dropped from story clusters based upon some mysterious techmeme algorithm. In a variety of situations, Techmeme caps the number of "Discussion" links for a post, and if the order of your appearance in the list increases over time as Ken Sheppardson observed, there's obviously a good chance you'll fall off the end.
