This looks like direct competition with Twitter, and the third-party integration adds an aggregation aspect that mimics the integration of Twhirl with Friendfeed. So with this latest move, AOL has greatly strengthened its position in the social media space. The last time I saw such a good crossover was an AIM bot that would update Pownce. This worked perfectly fine, the only problem is that no one uses Pownce.
