Duncan, I think you're absolutely correct. Marketing goes a very long way on its own, without merit, but with no marketing you'll be very lucky to be noticed no matter how good your content is. Of course "marketing" in this sense encompasses a broad range of activities; like engaging in communities such as FriendFeed.
