FriendFeed Comments MT Plugin Test Entry - http://mt-hacks.com/mt41...
Here is the first test comment to kick things off. This comment was submitted via the blog's comment form. - Mark Carey
Cool plugin Mark. - beau
Wow, this is awesome. When is the Wordpress plugin coming? :) - Andrew Meyer
The WP plugin came first (by Glenn Slaven), though there are a few differences: http://mcurl.net/wpff - Mark Carey
Thanks, Mark. I guess I have seen that plugin in action. I just need to sit back and wait for Disqus and FF to collaborate. - Andrew Meyer
mark, this is great stuff. nice work! - Michael Sippey
The plugin has now been officially registered as a FF client, so "via" messages should show up for comments made via the blog comment form and cc.ed to FriendFeed. - Mark Carey from FriendFeed MT Plugin
Oh yeah, I should do that too eh? - Glenn Slaven
Yes, you should ;) That comment was my first test of it, works well... - Mark Carey
Good work mate, that looks great - Glenn Slaven
lets see if this shows up :) - Adam Ostrow
Love this! What versions(s) of MT does the plugin support? - femme bot
The plugin should work with MT4 or higher. Tested with 4.1 and 4.2 release candidate. - Mark Carey from FriendFeed MT Plugin
I'd love if something like this was developed for Drupal too. - Koray AL
This has been a test of the ... - dug from FriendFeed MT Plugin

The chat room/forum problem (& an apology to @Technosailor) - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
since posts that appear in a list are determined by the owner, when another user reads the list, there is no direct control of the content. it has been recommended by another trusted user, and the same is true for posts shown in friendfeed using friend-of-a-friend - Mike Chelen
Mike Taylor's already got a good reasoned post up in response http://friendfeed.com/codebea... - Chris Heath
Chris: and I answered Mike Taylor in his comments there. Good stuff. - Robert Scoble
IRC remains the number one text-only community tool for live collaboration IMO. It has all the features except attachments - and that's a good thing. - randulo
The FOAF inaccuracy in this post is glaring. - Bruce Lewis
This exactly mirrors real life. The degree to which anything is good is the degree to which people work for it. When the trolls etc inevitably come to feed it's your choice: stay and work or leave and cry. If people stay and work then a community can thrive. Exactly as in real life. I've seen this many many times. As in real life what people usually do is move on to once again live off low hanging fruit when the best crops take time. - Todd Hoff
"That’s true, but the more conversations I got involved in the less I found I was learning" - How much do you learn from your family? And a long list of links is equivalent to memorizing all the names of dead presidents, it's anything but learning. What you see is Mike Lee hurting and exploding out. Next he'll be reaching out and Twitter won't be there. - Todd Hoff
Todd: you forget my brother is THE famous ALEX SCOBLE! I learn a lot from my family. Some here, some in private. And you must have missed the hundreds of replies that Mike got. Some things, by the way, are best done over whisky at a bar not online. - Robert Scoble
I think you missed the point about family Robert. The purpose of any group is not always for you to learn. There are many other aspects that need not be consigned to a whisky bar. - Todd Hoff
@Robert - some people don't have the option to do things over whiskey at a bar, but they can interact online. And some tools are better suited to that kind of interaction than others. I can think of one that starts with an F and doesn't end in an K. A lot of people look to make strong connections with others that they simply don't have access to in person. - Lindsay
Posted a comment on the blog. Long story short, the DATA (activity and content) has changed but you haven't changed your filters to help transform that data into information. The problem isn't FriendFeed it's the fact that you've calcified and haven't kept up with your filters. Full blog comment here: http://scobleizer.com/2009... - AJ Kohn
My long-winded response and plea: http://friendfeed.com/bluecoc... - Lindsay
It appears Robert believes that he will be able to influence others through the curating of Twitter lists. In my opinion the type of people who cannot create and filter their own community are not worth influencing. I think the list feature is useful but so far I have no desire to subscribe to anyone else's Twitter lists. - scott anderson
scott: you can believe that all you want. Doesn't make you right. http://listorious.com is doing awesome. - Robert Scoble
"you can believe that all you want. Doesn't make you right" A statement that can apply to many people on several different subjects. Perhaps it's come to a point, Robert, where it's best for you to agree to disagree regarding the data, fate, and demise of FriendFeed. Because you've chosen to move on to the next shiny thing doesn't mean that everyone else has to do the same. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
True - Robert Scoble
What Tina said + How is listorious any better than the SUL? It seems to me like a circle-jerk of the perpetual group of A-List bloggers reinventing themselves as curators in a social capital land grab. I could be wrong tho'. - scott anderson
scott: almost none of the Listorius lists are done by A-list bloggers. But, thanks for playing. 6.5 million lists have been created in a weekend. You think those were created by only A-lsters? Dream on! - Robert Scoble
And what's the difference between the SUL? Well, for one, there's only ONE SUL and there's 6.5 million lists already with more every minute. The SUL is offered in Twitter's startup UI. Lists are not. The SUL gifts its members millions of followers every year. So far I've gotten a slight bump from lists, but not nearly as big as being on the SUL. - Robert Scoble
I like the list feature. I find it useful for organizing the people I follow. I just don't have any interest in subscribing to other people's lists. I was comparing listorious with SUL, not the list feature with SUL. - scott anderson
Listorious presents thousands (soon to be millions) of lists. The SUL only presents one. It's funny you can't see the difference between that. - Robert Scoble
Looking at the front page it *appears* that Tim O'Reilly, a tech publisher, is in charge of curating tech news. You don't see a problem with that?? - scott anderson
I don't understand why you'd want to follow somebody else's lists. Wouldn't that just clutter up your view with a bunch of stuff you don't control? Or does it keep those lists separate, like your own lists are separate from your follows? - Otto
Be sure to read Brandon Mendelson's (a former SUL member) post on Lists here: http://www.soapboxincluded.com/2009... - Jesse Stay
randulo: no platforms can match irc for low-latency communication besides im protocols such as xmpp ... and friendfeed! - Mike Chelen
Robert: just stand by for the SLL (suggested list list) - Mike Chelen
Otto: there is complete control in that you may choose to follow or unfollow the list at any time, with additional granularity offered through following individual accounts - Mike Chelen
Robert I reread your post again and several things jumped out: 1) "Compare that feed to your average Facebook feed and you’ll see it in stark black and white: your Facebook feed is “fun” but isn’t teaching you much." Really? Well, you must be using Facebook differently than I do. I somehow have managed to collect the pages and the friends and the groups I enjoy and its providing me with... more... - Melanie Reed
I want to add that I respect the job you provide to the online community, the observations you make. You are gifted in this area. But I see that more as a guidance value rather than as counselor and decision maker for users. Those jobs seem more important for the production side of social media rather than its use. - Melanie Reed
Louis Gray
Stage Five of Being an Early Adopter - http://blog.louisgray.com/2008...
Stage Five of Being an Early Adopter
From June of 2008: "The adopter will, at this point, start heaping lavish praise upon the new product, in a quest to assert their dominance, and prove that they can, again, make a service successful, and to prove that all their belly-aching in the preceding months was valid. The adopter will use their blog and both the new and old service to call followers to migrate as a group, both helping the new shiny toy, and in turn, damaging the old one, out of spite and frustration." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
Just because we understand doesn't mean we have to appreciate the tactics. Robert, I like you a lot as a person, and you have brought a lot of benefit to the tech community through your discoveries and your evangelism. But this is the role of yours that I like less. I think much of my activity and visibility was gained through watching you and learning some things you do well. But also through watching you, there are aspects of what you do that I have chosen to avoid. - Louis Gray
Despite your apologies to the people you mentioned in your post, upon their leaving, you suggested that those who made noise on the way out the door should have instead stayed quiet. This would be a good time to take a deep breath and remember the reason you were so positive on this place. I am not personally offended, but I am disappointed. - Louis Gray
What is interesting to me (and I think one of the reasons why this has me so irritable tonight) is that this human trait and these stages aren't limited to technology adoption. I've seen it in music and other art communities, projects in non-profits, etc. and it always grates on me. I want sustainable communities, but I suppose when finding the next big thing or being top of the food chain is someone's job or goal, it's hard to cultivate those. Where is the balance? - joey
Fair enough. I've said my last word about it. I'm sorry I'm being a jerk but I did put in thousands of hours here and participated more than most people over two years. So, a few posts of disappointment are earned by me, even if they are disappointing. - Robert Scoble
Thanks. Hey - you know I like you. I'm in the same boat you are, much of the time, but I'm being more measured. And piling on at this point validates the naysayers who were never productive, and who can gain from cutting down your enthusiasm in the future. - Louis Gray
P.S. I intentionally didn't send this to Twitter. - Louis Gray
Louis: here's the thing. There's a hide button on all my posts for a reason. Or you can even block me. If I really am migrating somewhere else then it won't matter if you block me, will it? That said, it was good times and FriendFeed still has some uses, like what we're doing here and live chats and such. Although I notice Leo Laporte's fans have largely moved back to IRC or Google Wave for his Twit shows. - Robert Scoble
I won't ever hide you or block you. That's silly. Besides, I read all your stuff in Google Reader. I see the same things you do. We've talked about it a lot 1-1 even before the FB acquisition. It's all over but the shouting. But I say let's skip the shouting. :) - Louis Gray
Great nail-head post, Louis. I like Drew's comment. ;) Being on the educator side of things, Robert, and always having to push students into the "latest and greatest" software and current upgrade, it does get old real fast, having to crank out new curriculum for the latest toy on the market. The basics of computer science are going by the way side in many programs at universities as a result. It's not a healthy tension. It's a contributor: we've lost students adding to the mix of enrollments going down. - Melanie Reed
Robert, I hope if you remove your imports from here you'll add them over on Facebook. These are my Twitter clients - Twitter still doesn't cut it as a client for me. I also enjoy the threaded conversation, personally. Conversation in the same stream as your posts IMO clutters the conversation. I like to respond where I'm not cluttering up my stream. - Jesse Stay
Leo picked up a story today that i brought to his attention via a for:twit delicious tag... when it hit http://friendfeed.com/twit-st... i added in some quotes from the article and he read them out while bringing up the topic... these tools are still useful if only a handful of people use them... - Chris Heath
Louis: sorry, you don't see the same stuff I do. But I WOULD love to debate you on Google Reader. You can even see my tech news feeds here: http://twitter.com/Scoblei... works fast. My Google Reader takes more than a minute to start up. Useless. - Robert Scoble
Jesse: unlike Technosailor I would NEVER delete content, especially yours. That's why I thought he was such a jerk. By deleting his account on his way out he deleted MY content too. Grrrr. - Robert Scoble
Robert, another reason I like Facebook :-) When your account is deleted your stuff stays on your friends' pages. - Jesse Stay
Why would Google reader take more than a minute to start up? Mine took 12 seconds and that includes times to login. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Jesse: I know you and I like conversation. The stark reality that I've come to face is most people DON'T like having conversation, or, more accurately, they don't like having conversation with people they didn't invite to have a conversation with. I hope Twitter, if they ever add comments under tweets, will let us limit to ONLY those people we've personally added. - Robert Scoble
Robert I'll expect that from Facebook before I expect it from Twitter. Imagine if you can limit a comment thread to just a specific friend list. Facebook is *so* close! Right now I can do that, but it also includes the other networks I'm in. I'm betting on them getting there very, very soon. - Jesse Stay
I think what you are doing with your Twitter lists is great, and you are doing them better than anybody else. But I still prefer Google Reader. There's little to debate, because there is no need for a "one right answer" response. I would prefer to not read headlines and links all day on Twitter amidst the noise. - Louis Gray
Louis: that's cool. I predict you'll change your view there within a year or two. I'm just ahead of you and am reading more inbound (more people, more things, more brands). Google Reader doesn't scale to the level I needed it to. Can't even handle more than 1,000 people. Grrr. - Robert Scoble
Personally, whatever allows me to consolidate my workflow the best wins. Whether it's bringing all my services to e-mail or another client, or bringing all my activity into one service, that would be ideal. Right now what I'm doing is the best workflow I can come up with. I admit for me FriendFeed is getting to be less and less of that as Facebook gets more and more real-time. As for Google Reader, there are only a couple things keeping me from switching there. - Jesse Stay
"Ahead of you" implies there's a contest. There's not. Twitter is infrastructure, and you're using it well. But you still can't have the conversations there like we are here. You still can't type in full sentences. Blah blah. You know this stuff cold. :) Lists are filters or window dressing on a weak foundation. - Louis Gray
If you assume this place fades away or gets messy, I'll show you some interesting alternatives where I am already engaging. But that's for another day. - Louis Gray
Lous, you, me, and Robert should all get in a room some day and show our alternatives. I have time tomorrow :-) - Jesse Stay
Louis: yes. I'm waiting for you to find the way through the forest so we can follow you all again! That said, again, most people don't want conversations. They just want to learn. Remember libraries? They didn't have conversations either. As to 140 character problems that's why we have blogs, no? :-) - Robert Scoble
I have time too! - Robert Scoble
I'm in downtown SF though without a car so I'd need a ride (or you could meet at my hotel) :-) - Jesse Stay
You're in SF? Hmmm. Let's talk first thing in the morning (9ish). - Robert Scoble
Well, I will be at 9am - my flight leaves Utah at 7am MST - Jesse Stay
Call me any time though - 801-853-8339 - Jesse Stay
Robert, I disagree with most people just want to learn. To learn what? Is this the corporatization again of how society is supposed to interact with one another....not based on relationship but on outdoing someone with more information? FriendFeed does (or is attempting) to do both as it should be. - Melanie Reed
Jesse: call me when you're in SF. Melanie: most people just want to sit on the couch and be entertained. This is why Twitter pushes celebrities so hard! No work necessary, just scan through your favorite celebrities talking about their pimples. - Robert Scoble
Robert, Don't you think that is a rather shallow and corporatized assessment of your fellowman? I agree there is a market behavior. But who manipulated them to it? Let me use a metaphor: I can stop using any patience or long term goal thinking and just put a jar of sugar out on the table for dinner. It will give every body quick results. I can add to that some bacon rinds.... anything... more... - Melanie Reed
Robert said: "Most people...don't like having conversation with people they didn't invite to have a conversation with." But that's what's so cool about Friendfeed - no filter blocking the uninvited. - Michael Slattery
Yes, Michael, FriendFeed is democracy in action. Every voice has a chance to be heard as if he or she was as good as the next man or woman no matter how insignificant their ratings or standing in the world of technology. We can be citizens of Whoville and FriendFeed welcomes all whos. :) - Melanie Reed
If people don't want to have conversations how come so many people on Twitter are attempting to have conversations? People are clearly not just looking for information on Twitter or any of the other social networks. - Eoghann Irving
I blogged about this here: http://scobleizer.com/2009... - Robert Scoble
Wow, just catching up on this.... I too have invested THOUSANDS of hours here on FF - evidenced by over 18+K comments and 26+K likes. Very sad to see this platform die a slow death. The "forum" problem is real. I was horrified by how Mike and later Aaron were treated here on FF (crowd feeding frenzy at it's worse). I would LOVE to know what you all think is the next platform to "Discover" :) - Susan Beebe

[EDIT: QUESTION WAS ANSWERED. LEAVING FOR ARCHIVAL PURPOSES. THANK YOU.] Dear FriendFeed (now Facebook) team: do you delete inactive accounts?
November 1 from Bookmarklet - Comments disabled - Share
We've sent emails and Tweeted @Facebook regarding a friend's Facebook account. He passed away almost 8mo. ago, but we still visit his page, write on his wall, and look at his photos. We are afraid his account will be deleted. There is nothing in the FAQ, Wiki, etc., that states a policy on inactive accounts. Who should we contact to prevent deletion? I know you are not customer service, but any information would be helpful. Thank you. - Mona Nomura from Bookmarklet
I can't find the link right now, but there were a number of FF posts about FB's memorial acct policy recently. - Spidra Webster
Thanks, Spidra. I'll search. - Mona Nomura
But it is absolutely annoying that FB make themselves so inaccessible on CS issues. - Spidra Webster
Search terms should be optimized, too. I would've NEVER guessed to Google "memorial" - Mona Nomura
I did friendfeed search for Facebook and memorial and got a lot of Michael Jackson posts. Which annoys me because I know that the FF posts I was thinking about used both those terms. - Spidra Webster
I actually searched FF + Facebook and scanned through - maybe it's because I know the users, but I found a great share by AJ Kohn. Whatever. All that matters is I found the answer. Thanks for your help, Spidra :) - Mona Nomura
Have you checked the Facebook blog?: http://blog.facebook.com/blog... - there's even a contact e-mail there. - Jesse Stay
Search terms should be optimized, too. I would've NEVER guessed to Google "memorial" - You (edit | delete) - Mona Nomura

quick-note
directeur
PREDICTION: The problem FriendFeed will have is when it will be very popular (mainstream if you want), there will be so much content that you won't be able to see eevrything. A page refresh and tons of content is published. We will for sure miss tons of good stuff.
a page shows say, 30 entries, between two refreshes, say there's 2000 new entries by friends and friends of friends... you see what I mean? - directeur from NoiseRiver
We need some way to lens ACROSS content, to view things based on value / ranking / medium, etc. Already there's more content in even my shallow feed than I can comfortably follow, and few of my friends even use FF. - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
One word: BLOCK ;) - Mona Nomura
I expect we'll see more than you realize. Likes and Comments keep stuff bouncing to the top until you get a chance to see it. - Hutch Carpenter
I'm liking and commenting just to bounce ya twice. ;) - Internet's Tad
Best guess is that hyper growth is already being foreseen with numerous solutions. These guys are good! - Charlie Anzman
only if you subscribe to everybody under the sun. I'm sure scoble aleady has that problem here and on twitter - Brett Kelly
Block and Hide aren't nearly good enough for the things I want to do when updates hit several tens per second. I, really, want things like Boolean filters of near arbitrary complexity, feedback learning, and flexible presentation ranking, just to stay sane. - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
I'm telling you guys - Lindsay totally pegged it. FF is the site that just DEMANDS an Intelligent Agent to sift through the volcanic soil to expose the rough diamonds. If the FF devs have half a brain, they have a genius or two slaving away on that right now. - Internet's Tad
I agree, lots of stuff falls through the cracks through out the day. I think the 'best of' was added for this reason. I haven't really used it that much though. - Tsega Dinka
but all the good stuff is reshared... personally my eyes are trained to scan content quickly and efficiently. it weeds out what i'm interested in and not. if all else fails, there's always the "BLOCK" or "HIDE" options... - Mona Nomura
Resharing is data-cluttering, as I see it. I want a system that unifies references to URLs, for one. It tells me where that reference is made from (Rooms, friends, likes, whatnot), but only gives me a single thing to look out for any given referent. The actual rest of info is just useful metadata for building lenses out of. - Alexander Williams from NoiseRiver
You ask the wrong question with your prediction my multi-lingual friend -- the question is not whether we will see too much, but whether we will see enough? FriendFeed (with or without NoiseRiver) is an extremely good model for seeing "enough". NoiseRiver will allow the "noise lovers" to see even more :-) - Robert Seidman
As more people join, simply being good at managing who you follow will be more important and should keep the noise down. - Martin Bryant
Surely people like Robert Scoble are already at that level, he manages fine! - Joe Dawson
Joe's right. Bring it on! - Robert Scoble
Especially if one uses small screens and apps like twhirl to view the feed... - Henk de Kruyff from twhirl
We'll just need a CloseFriendFinder app to sit on top of FriendFinder - Craig Thomler
I don't see the problem if there is the right method to represent the contnet, in a away that the fruition of it by the user would be easier... - Edoardo Piccolotto from twhirl
Yes. There is the potential for much more clutter here than twitter, for example. FF needs enhanced filtering tools. - Ian Fogg
It's already happening for me. Need tags. Plus likes and comments only go so far. What if I like stuff only a few others like? How do I find that? - Larry Huffman
if more of my friends were on FF I wouldn't be subscribed to so many people I don't know - Samuel Bostock
the average user isn't going to be subscribed to that many people. and the mainstream will be much less "active" in terms of generating content than the hardcore early adopters. In short, I don't buy the argument. - Jamie
The average user doesn't use the majority of features present on mobile phones. In Portugal owning a expensive phone is a status statement, but most of them could use the cheapest mobile in term of features used. With software and web services it's the same, people use just a subset of the features, and they have to be in front of them. Power users and all it's likes and dislikes are useful to test the limits of a application, but besides that are not the voice of God. - Mário Pires
This is where the top posts of the day/week/month will come into play. I sure that someone will comment or like a post before it flits away. It does bear consideration though, put some brakes on the speed of posting perhaps? - Mathew A. Koeneker from fftogo
Maybe a combo of FriendFeed and Digg? people could set to only receive posts with X number of likes/comments...or based on the rep of the person posting... - Craig Thomler
If i could create "groups" of people by subjects relevant to me perhaps it would be more manageable. - Mário Pires
so there will be meta services (think summize). Cool. no problemo. - john conroy
Just look at the Everyone feed. Only imagine articles with 1,000 likes (ala Digg) and 500 comments (ala slashdot). Some people may want the raw feeds, we'll need new filters/views/trails/signposts/guides/topics etc... - Mitchell Tsai
@Mario Agree. GM script for Friends / Groups http://ffapps.com/filters/ - Hao Chen
I think we'll just end up hiding a lot more stuff - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I have the feeling that the FF staff will roll with the punches. Scalability! - Steve Isaacs
@Robert Scoble: you WON'T be able to manage that noise. It's simply a mathematical fact. Say, you see 30 post, and between two refreshes, 20.000 entries are posted. The next page will show the last 30 of these 20.000 new entries. You will miss the entries in between. Liking or commenting from FOAF won't help. Because the flow will run... fast. - directeur from NoiseRiver
Prescient in Twitter's case. For awhile it was so for FF too. I don't know about now however; things are slower. - Itachi

Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark. - Mark Krynsky
erm...Adelaide, SA, Australia - Mo Kargas
Sydney, Australia. - Andrew Trinh
Yeah, I don't see how to add anything to the map - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
But you already have Rahsheen. - Andrew Trinh
Well it's working because I see others are adding themselves...Make sure you are logged into your Google account. - Mark Krynsky
After most have put their placemarks on, don't let anyone edit it because there's always someone out there waiting to fuck shit up. - Andrew Trinh
@Andrew...good point. I just changed it from public to unlisted which only makes the map available to those with the URL. - Mark Krynsky
Even so, last time we had the Confessions account details on FF it was tinkered with. - Andrew Trinh
I added mine, but in the process of learning I think I nudged the Sydney, Australia points off a little. Sorry. - Rob Haas

Hey Robert Haas - We're apparently neighbors. - edit. Okay maybe not, unless you live at the airport. XD - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now. -
@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map. - Mark Krynsky
Thanks Mark! I see it all now. -
Great idea! - Alan Le
Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point. - Neal Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going. - Mark Krynsky
Am I the only FriendFeeder in VA? - Aram Zucker-Scharff
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up? - Neal Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool! - Mark Krynsky

Hey Shey if you get that #23 super power working, then I want one that is like krytonite to my dog's breath :) - Patrick Jordan
Anyone read those ChildLife books? I loved them as a kid. I'd read encyclopedias, too, but not back-to-back. When I ran out of my books, I'd find my mother's, no matter where she hid them. Seems she didn't think Sidney Sheldon, Erica Jong and Danielle Steel were appropriate for a preteen. Ok, I'm exaggerating; I actually found Jong boring. Zipless? WTF? - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
@Rodfather Maybe sometime in the future, distant future - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Thanks for not being too freaked out y'all -- FFers are teh awesomest! - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Freaked out? You so silly, Shey. Your list made me smile almost as much as the picture on your site of you and your wife. You cool peeps. Even if you do cuddle during football. HA! - nakachi

Mad Dog Palin--The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America : Rolling Stone - http://www.rollingstone.com/politic...
Mad Dog Palin--The scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is - it's what her candidacy says about America : Rolling Stone
WOW...This is not just another article digging at palin - it is THE article digging at palin and her 'cultural' significance. - Anna Haro from Bookmarklet
"The great insight of the Palin VP choice is that huge chunks of American voters no longer even demand that their candidates actually have policy positions; they simply consume them as media entertainment, rooting for or against them according to the reflexive prejudices of their demographic, as they would for reality-show contestants or sitcom characters. Hicks root for hicks, moms for moms, born-agains for born-agains." - Anna Haro
The truly disgusting thing about Sarah Palin isn't that she's totally unqualified, or a religious zealot, or married to a secessionist, or unable to educate her own daughter about sex, or a fake conservative who raised taxes and horked up earmark millions every chance she got. No, the most disgusting thing about her is what she says about us: that you can ram us in the ass for eight... more... - Anna Haro
"Democracy doesn't require a whole lot of work of its citizens, but it requires some: It requires taking a good look outside once in a while, and considering the bad news and what it might mean, and making the occasional tough choice, and soberly taking stock of what your real interests are." - Anna Haro
See, I believe that as a citizen you have the responsibility to pay attention to the people who will represent you and the laws they enact in your name. But with poor reporting and politicians doing so much behind closed doors, there's a dumbing down of American culture that's acceptable. How many people have you talked to who seem to have an opinion they want to spout on politics and in the same breath state proudly, "Politics bores me." or even worse, "All politicians are the same."? - Admiral Anika
"And none of it matters, so long as you remember a few months before Election Day to offer them a two-bit caricature culled from some cutting-room-floor episode of Roseanne as part of your presidential ticket. And if she's a good enough likeness of a loudmouthed Middle American archetype, as Sarah Palin is, John Q. Public will drop his giant-size bag of Doritos in gratitude, wipe the Sizzlin' Picante dust from his lips and rush to the booth to vote for her." - Trish R
And unfortunately, most of it is true (or at least I agree with it). - Trish R
Wow, that's a hell of a picture. After reading the first two paragraphs, all I could think was how badly Matt Taibbi wants to be Hunter S. Thompson. - Carla Thompson
Personally, I like Rolling Stone articles. But a word of caution.. they are always unapologetically extremely left-leaning. - Phil G
hahaha...Carla, I thought the same thing. - Anna Haro
The ironic thing is that the media is the primary cause of all this. Reducing politicians statements to sound bites where a few words from a larger speach can be spun one way or another. Politicians don't have to have grand ideas or positions, they just stick to hot button issues that play well on TV. Couple that with lobbyists and special interest groups to give them butt loads of... more... - Jason Shultz from twhirl
Of course J Phil. It's one perspective, one article, out of MANY. - Anna Haro
I honestly don't know what the terms "left" and "right" mean anymore in American politics. I try to figure out who has the best command of the facts and who is making the most sense. This article makes a great deal of sense. (If I must define myself politically with a label, it would be "progressive libertarian.") - Sean McBride
"Here's what Sarah Palin represents: being a fat fucking pig who pins "Country First" buttons on his man titties and chants "U-S-A! U-S-A!" at the top of his lungs while his kids live off credit cards and Saudis buy up all the mortgages in Kansas." - wow...harsh. - Chris Hollander
Very interesting read, though disturbing. I put my money on McCain/Palin winning the election. - Peter
@Sean McBride... right on. - LogEx
Damn. He really worked up a lather on that one. - Yolanda
hahaha @Yo - Anna Haro
I don't think I'd talk with him too much at a party. ;) - Yolanda
Classic: "After eight years of unprecedented corruption, incompetence, waste and greed, the party of Karl Rove understood that 50 million Americans would not demand solutions to any of these problems so long as they were given a new, new thing to beat their meat over." - Raoul Pop
i agree for the most part - Cee Bee
ps recession - adolfo foronda
Oh wow, a coworker informed me about this article a few days ago!! - Terence
Taibbi *nails it* w/ the consumption of candidates as media entertainment. Infotainment has utterly corrupted news such that they are largely indistinguishable now. A huge disservice to the populace. And, of course, it results in this insane Reality TV show in front of us. - Ayşe E.
wow..such poignant words. The article still resonating even after reading it through. - Alan Le
Why is the entire country not going, "WTF? You can't find a person more qualified in the entire Republican party? REALLY?!?!" Her selection was condescending to our entire citizenry, and everyone seems to be rolling with it. - Robert Fischer
Why aren't more Republican women outraged that the party thinks so little of women that when they feel the need to add a vagina to the ticket, they don't give a damn about whether she's actually qualified? - Trish R
why aren't they more outraged? because they're living vicariously via the pit bull. they see her and say, 'she's just like me'. but prettier and i bet you they aren't willing to admit that. so they over-identify with her and i'm left saying, 'yea, but i wouldn't vote you president of a committee of 2.' - Admiral Anika
Liked only because of the picture, not because I have any interest in US politics. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
"But watching Palin's speech, I had no doubt that I was witnessing a historic, iconic performance. The candidate sauntered to the lectern with the assurance of a sleepwalker — and immediately launched into a symphony of snorting and sneering remarks, taking time out in between the superior invective to present herself as just a humble gal with a beefcake husband and a brood of healthy,... more... - Roberto Bonini
"The rest of Palin's speech was the same dog-whistle crap Republicans have been railing about for decades. Palin's crack about a mayor being "like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities" testified to the Republicans' apparent belief that they can win elections till the end of time running against the Sixties. (They're probably right.)" - Roberto Bonini
dear god, if you exist and hear prayers, please please, let there be some notion of civility return to this country in my lifetime. a man. - Nathan Eckenrode
Louis Gray
Always an odd thing to find my avatar stuck in someone else's screenshot. Thanks, Steve Gillmor. :) - Louis Gray
Wow, and Steve Gilmore can sure turn a phrase, also: "I still can’t get past the reality that when Twitter farts, FriendFeed becomes a complete and total gasbag." It goes downhill from there. - Rex Hammock
Rex Hammick - Steve Gillmor
I didn't understand a damn thing in that post. - Matt Ruiz
I think Steve needs to stock up on Activia. - Dave Winer
What's ironic is the content of the screenshot and Louis's avatar :-) (Last I heard, Louis is liberal) - Jesse Stay
what is activia dave? - Steve Gillmor
I don't get it. - Kimber Scott
get what Kimber - Steve Gillmor
oh, well, that's never happened before :) - Steve Gillmor
holden: can u splain the activia ref? - Steve Gillmor
The whole article, Steve. Why does he blame FriendFeed? Is it like blaming Drew's cancer, or something? And why anyone thinks Twitter is better than this is beyond me. (Just realized you're the Steve who wrote it.) Still don't get it. Why do you think Twitter is better? - Kimber Scott
Kimber: Where do I say Twitter is better. It just is. And FriendFeed brings out whatever that is. - Steve Gillmor
Steve - Twitter is better at giving voice to teeth whitening moms and life coaches. You can't use Twitter without using some sort of third-party thing. (I use Tweetdeck and FF.) I much prefer spending my time here and checking in there. I have my rooms here. I don't have to click on anything to see a picture. I can talk as long as I want in one post. Liking is much better than RTing and... more... - Kimber Scott
That was funniest Gilmor post I've read. Read it three times and still trying to understand the point but it was great. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Yeah. Yet another journalist who doesn't know how to use FF. Why do I think this? B/c in his screenshot Louis or Robert were telling him how to use it! haha. - anna sauce
No offense, Steve, but I'd like someone with a big following to review FriendFeed who actually knows how to use it. Perhaps the ease-of-use is way past these folks? I doubt it. Or whip out the old "I don't have time/ I have a job." Yet, these people spend their time reviewing, and using, technology. So.... still unclear on why the non-power-users are reviewing it. - anna sauce
As I said, I'm not a geek and I had no trouble figuring FriendFeed out. It's really not that hard. Really. Actually, it's easier than Twitter. First: You don't have to figure out what it's for. You "get it" right away. It's obviously a communication tool. Second: if you want to jump in on a conversation, which you can actually have on FriendFeed, and as I did with this one, you don't... more... - Kimber Scott
anna I am a power user. Kimber I love FriendFeed but also know why it exists. How hard is it to understand that there is a hugely dynamic symbiotic relationship between the two platforms, dominated by Twitter's reach and FF's depth. Holden, the point was to communicate, which it definitely is doing. And even developers like Dave choose not to explain some of what they write. Activia means what? - Steve Gillmor
Activia is a company that makes yogurt that aids in getting the bowels flowing... - Ryan
So, Steve, what you're saying then is there is a symbiotic relationship between a parasite on a pimple on an ass and a body as a whole? That seems like a one way relationship to me and it doesn't reflect kindly on FriendFeed. So, I guess what I don't get, getting back to my original comment, is how you can love FriendFeed and still call it a parasitic ass-pimple eater. - Kimber Scott from email
Ryan ahh thanks I use Metamucil when I have that problem, but this piece came easily - Steve Gillmor
Kimber it's a reference to the original post, and it represents a size relationship in the post Oprah Twitterscape. And one organism's pimple is another's home sweet home. I love host and tenant, one more than the other -- which you'll have to ask elsewhere for the "answer." - Steve Gillmor
Couldn't you just blame Friendfeed once and be done with it in under 140 chars? - ianf ⌘
is anyone else wondering where gillmor gets off not googling things for himself? steve... double click the word, right click it, and do the search google option in the context menu... i really is that simple - Chris Heath
Guess it's nice that you think you're a power user, but you haven't really shown here that you are. Upset with the "gasbag" of FF? Follow new people. Create lists. Get off the main feed. Trim your subscriptions. You can't complain about the content (well, I can) unless you either know the various ways around it. Then you can complain. Otherwise, it just seems that you, like most of the people reviewing FF, have no idea how to use it. - anna sauce
This whole thread is one the funniest things I have read in a long time, including the post that started it all! Thanks to everyone. - frankiecarl
Unfortunately Steve is right, if Twitter goes down, the quality of realtime information in FF decreases... it is still the best client for Twitter but sharing and discovery still happens first on the fail whale network - Alberto Saavedra from Nambu
Holy smokes! I agree w/Frankiecarl, this is hilarious. - Mark Evans from iPhone
I commented on Steve's article, because I felt there was way more he could have written about the actual problem, the DDoS attack. However, there is one thing that bugs even me sometimes. It's one thing to have the best platform amongst social media, but it needs to be demonstrated in times like this. Needs a few more people using the strengths of FF to do a bit of citizen journalism. - George Hall (Australia)
Alberto, that's exactly my concern in the future as Friendfeed grows. As mass mainstream enters, quality the way we think of it decreases to Twitter Trending Topics. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
ianf: no. anna: what makes you think gasbag is not a term of endearment? George: it's really simple, FF's fault. Chris: I don't use search except as a spell checker, and I trust Dave WIner's spelling implicitly. - Steve Gillmor
This is a hysterical thread in response to one of the funniest posts i've read in a long time. the stuff about Steve not Googling for himself...that's just rockin' funny. thx for the laugh. I needed it. - Karoli
ff's fault only in that they don't always take opportunities to demonstate FF in such times NOT for what's happened. - George Hall (Australia) from BuddyFeed
how could you possibly know what happened. Me, I Blame FriendFeed - Steve Gillmor
Why is Blame always capitalized? I feel like I'm missing out on something. - Jonathan Langdale
Why, Steve? Why? What did FriendFeed do? I shouldn't even respond to this silly post anymore. It's almost like you're an artist who's painted a mess and is being vague about it with the hope that people might get the impression it must really "mean" something. Twitter goes down from a DOS attack and you Blame FriendFeed, but you love FriendFeed. You sound like my ex-husband. - Kimber Scott from email
Alberto, when Twitter went down, my FriendFeed folks continued to serve me quality contents. Really. - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Steve, your article made perfect sense to me. Sorry others didn't agree. It's clear that the tweetstream is the core of FF's value to most people, even if FF has oodles of other features that we "native" FFers get a lot more mileage out of. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Well said, Daniel. - anna sauce
Why doesn't everyone just pick a horse and ride it? This quibbling over platforms is tiresome. - ZuDfunck
Daniel: wasn't too hard, was it. thx - Steve Gillmor
i'm a tad inebriated, but still... wha? if twitter is the be all end all of online communications then we're f'd... seriously (in an inebriated kind of way) - Chris Heath
and by 'be all end all' i mean 'end all be all' and by that i mean 'core of FF's value to most people' - Chris Heath
Is it because I've just exited the 25-54 demo and now face the death panel, or does anyone else detect some ageism in comments about Steve's opinions on tech? I noticed it when GG was on Leo's network, too, from commenters who needed to teach the old men about things only a gen-xer or younger could possibly comprehend. I get it from younger people, too, who KNOW I won't be able... more... - Amyloo
like which comments Amyloo? sometimes stuff like that can be unintentional just because a younger generation's social norms deviate from the past generation and your perceptions are different than their intentions - misunderstandings and miscommunication are some of the pitfalls that are abound in life (and even more so in online life where there's not facial expression or tone and inflection of voice to give other social weight and cues to our words). - Chris Heath
in regards to steve, his style, and the reactions that his writings and online activities provoke: I think steve is either 1) trying to 'stir the pot' to 'get a rise' out of a certain type of person in a john c dvorak kind of way, 2) maybe he's really just a crotchety old man, and i mean that in the kindest of ways that a stranger can say that about someone or 3) something else -- and i... more... - Chris Heath
chris: I write something, people comment, I comment back. Pot is constantly stirred, doesn't need any extra. some people are trying to inflict damage by calling me old, or fat, or whatever. it usually say more about them since I am 60, fat, and whatever. The ageism thing is subjective: I could outlive all of them or none of them. WHo knows. Their problem, not mine. - Steve Gillmor
cool, fair enough - Chris Heath

Micah's Three rules of blogging are really the Three Rules of FriendFeed Participation. And it's much easier to do on FriendFeed than a blog, IMO. #gnomedex
The Rules of Blogging 1) Write like no one is reading 2) Write when you want to write 3) The moment you think "that would be a good blog post," you become a blogger. - Lindsay
I agree. I think you have a better chance of getting feedback using FriendFeed than trying to get traffic to go to your blog. I like FriendFeed because it's an instant community as long as you participate not just in your own feed but commenting and giving feedback to others. You may "Write like no one is reading" but you wouldn't be writing at all in a public forum unless you were... more... - Lindsay
