"I think at the time of the problem the OS I was using was Solaris. don't know if it makes any difference. I distinctly remember that any process would break on closing the shell. But thanks mack, that's a good detail to know." - Nicola Paolucci

"yep, nohup is the way I've always gone for those kind of things. The problem is if you don't remember to use it and you have a long running process which can't be stopped. Of course screen solves this problem altogether. I have been a happy screen user for a while now but screen came into my life later than my finding of disown :D." - Nicola Paolucci

"For me such command was a while ago "disown". Very useful for when you launch a very long running command but you forget the & at the end of the command line and now you have to keep your shell open forever. But no more with this very little known gem." - Nicola Paolucci

some ideas on where to host diffract.me initially...
i looked here and selected some: http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki... I like: http://www.slicehost.com/ - xen virtual host - 1Gb of RAM - 40Gb HD for 70$ a month and they install ubuntu 8. http://www.linode.com/ - xen virtual host - 1Gb RAM - 32Gb but more bandwidth for 60$ a month, for 80$ you get 1.5Gb ram and 800gb bandwidth, etc. you can pick the distro. this might also be useful: http://who-hosts.com - Nicola Paolucci
