Just curious, of all the cats who subscribe to my FriendFeed, which of your are storytellers? Written, audio, photography, film/video? There are conversations I keep trying to start here, related to storytelling, and wanted to know who to subscribe to, who may want to rap about the same things...
DYKC: The only professional work I've done was a music video, and the band didn't want much explicit storytelling... but I'm in the early pages of a screenplay, and I'm definitely interested in the topic.
- Roger Benningfield
You're not alone, :) I posted something looking for creatives as well, but things get buried pretty quickly around here.
- sergiooo
from NoiseRiver
Roger, that sounds interesting, bruh. I have been sharing quite a bit in the past week on storytelling; you might find the Ira Glass link interesting (or the story by Charlie Stross that I dropped earlier today). As a storyteller, I am no longer limiting myself to one particular medium, and that just made the whole hustle that much more exciting a prospect to me.
- DYKC?™
Not a storyteller. Wasn't blessed with the gift.
- Cecily
Sergiooo, yes, things do seem to get lost here quickly. Were you looking for storytelling creatives in particular, or something else? Someone to collaborate or share your stories with?
- DYKC?™
@cecily, this is me, looking at your photography, and saying "..you not blessed with the gift? That is a tissue of lies.."
- DYKC?™
I know a lil' bit about Seth -- have come across him on Seesmic before I stopped using it (and he is someone I keep up with from time to time, too).
- DYKC?™
So here is an interesting question, "You've got a short story to share (fiction) -- if you publish it on your site, what chances do you have it could still be a candidate for print?" An even more interesting question is, "Over time, you have published a collection of shorts on your site, does that increase your chances for it being published? Not at all? Does it matter?" Marinate.
- DYKC?™
I'm similar in that i don't stick to one medium, depends on what the project requires. I've done theatre, film and tv mostly. I just like being around creative people really.
- sergiooo
@glemak, good lookin' out on the room-check. I've set it up, now.
- DYKC?™
you need to checkout all the stories on http://podiobooks.com - lots of those folks self-publish online (text & audio) then go on to publish traditionally (pulp & ebook by publishing house) - if you have a selection already, ping evo (be glad to do intro if you don't know him)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
@glemak, I am not close yet, but, will be after making progress this summer I suspect. In general, I like to know what is out there for me. I've got 2 solid story ideas that are longer than shorts, and a couple of short-story ideas that I am working with.
- DYKC?™
@kyle, some of the best stories are told with written words (i'd love to get down with some of them, if you're interested in sharing, too).
- DYKC?™
definitely checkout the podiobook authors - tons are on twitter and some on friendfeed - they do meetups and have writing workshops too so lots of support mechanisms out there...
- mike "glemak" dunn
@glemak, I will definitely get down with them. Oh, and @rogerbenningfield -- I may have to come to you for some advice later on (re: your screenplay). I would imagine that is a lot like scripting Comics (so, a question of "standards" comes to mind for me...)
- DYKC?™
I liked that Ira Glass clip also; it was very motivating when he was talking about creating a lot of work and letting yourself improve. It may look like some people are born 'talented' and don't have to make an effort to create something strong but that isn't the case. These are skills that have to be honed by doing.
- sergiooo
Clarence, there are lots of people who have taken blog posts and converted them into books. Heather Armstrong (dooce) has a book coming out shortly, and the guy behind "Stuff White People Like" got a $300,000 advance for a print version of his own blog. The thing is to draw an audience and to be fairly prolific. You've obviously got the talent, and you're starting to build an audience. Bruh, you're halfway there.
- Cecily
@sergiooo, it is easy to forget that even cats like Ira Glass were likely "garbage" when they first started -- but, the consistency led to improvement. I am still in the garbage-in?, garbage-out? with my stories at the moment. It wasn't until recently that I discovered "storytelling" as a passion. It has taken two months to realize that the medium doesn't matter (and why force it). Best medium for the story wins at this point...
- DYKC?™
I'm a storyteller, I'm very interested in transmedia and looking at how narrative can adapt to new media. The new ways we can tell stories bring up some very cool possibilities.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
And thanks for the podiobooks link, this is perfect for while I'm working on the computer.
- sergiooo
'preciate everyone commenting here -- I am glad to know I am not the only one interested (I didn't think I was, but, the internet is vast and wide -- and social media can skew your perception about a great. many. things.) Shortly I am running to the market, but, you'll find me laying down storytelling related content in that room I created called, "Storytelling". Please. Come through!
- DYKC?™
Leave it up to @spin to drop something like, "Transliteracy". I had to Google it to make sure it meant what I suspected :)
- DYKC?™
Some time ago my entrepreneurship coaches told me the power of story telling. I didn't understand the art form much then, but I certainly do now. I'm working to improve on my current lack of talents in this area.
- Jeremy Campbell
from twhirl
@jeremy, care to share? I doubt that you lack talents, btw, bruh. I suspect, like me, you just need strength forged from consistency. No?
- DYKC?™
I make doc films and a few other things.
- Dean Terry
@dean, I am addicted to documentary film and video! Unfortunately, I have yet to come across a story I was passionate enough to get behind and do a documentary on. Hopefully that will change.
- DYKC?™
@DYKC, I'm pretty decent at writing stories, but I guess my communication itself needs the most work. I'm also not so good at structuring stories, and building suspense and curiosity much like polished marketers or actors can do. Next to being a doctor, the last thing I would want to be is a teacher.
- Jeremy Campbell
from twhirl
I write stories.. fast fiction.. short stories... one novel... got some things put in an anthology... nothing through the "established" press. I also lie a lot at family gatherings. I come from a family of storytellers. Interested in the conversation.
- Barry Wynn
barry: lol - lie a lot at family gatherings, that's excellent :)
- mike "glemak" dunn
Not that I can speak for Jeremy, but I think I know what he's talking about re: storytelling in entrepreneurship. When I worked in user experience/usability, rather than reporting problems, I told stories that were based on the people I'd interviewed. You weave a fiction that is based in reality, and it makes people pay attention, and also drives them to become more personally invested in the product.
- Cecily
I love storytelling, love talking about storytelling, love telling stories of my own and love reading other good storytellers. This rocks.
- Monique
love and am engaged in many forms of storyelling..what do you focus on?
- susan mernit
@monique, @susan -- sorry I missed these comments before. The forms I focus on right now are written, audio, video, and photography. The ones that I'm putting the most effort towards right now are the audio (storytelling on my podcast), and written (on my site, and in pieces to get published). I've experimented with storytelling via video (and recently posted one of those on my site).
