I'm actually trying to figure out something useful to do. I made a Seesmic plugin, now I'm bored with it. - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
I'm minimal with the code wrangling, I'll be more on the artsy side of things. I at least know I won't blow up code. Ahhh the life of the presentation layer! - Eric Rice
I just put the shit up. I have no interest in themes or editing at the moment - Outsanity
And well, in a world of customized avatars (that includes oh, i don't know, anything in *gaming*, not just worlds), you might be able to design little people. And hey, maybe scrape some data from facebook to give it a personality based on certain models of people in your social graph, huh? And maybe that will disrupt human relations. The jealous of the carbon vs. the bit. We wait in line for iPhones after all. Do we want to love the machine? - Eric Rice
Eric - have you checked out Seattle Science Foundation? http://seattlesciencefoundatio... I'll dig up some pics from my tour of their facilities, but you can go and check them out in SL already. Give me a couple days to track down my pics. I know Franza and several others on their board. Light years ahead of most orgs. Franza is deep. Their islands on SL are called Medipelago. Also check out http://2b3d.net. Randy and the 2B3D team built Medipelago. Right up your alley I'd imagine. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I'll check it out. There's a huge huge opportunity here, from UI/UX to social interaction (even real-to-real via virtual). I think I've fallen into the AI pool since we know we can mangle the data around us, tangible or otherwise. - Eric Rice
thats soo good! I am really into augmented reality stuff... - Alemsah
There is good amount of possibilities with Eye toy and interaction. Imagine playing little big planet on your table, pushing them, taking them through platforms etc. Users will become part of the game, not just controlling through an interface - Alemsah
http://store.videogamecentral.... it's not the PSP-3000, the camera model number is psp-300. Available for 60 bucks and no, not in the US. Comes with editing software from japan on UMD. - Eric Rice
Similar quality to the PS3 Eye, Eric or better? What do you think? - TDavid
Next up, I'll tell you about the GPS i have for the PSP ;) - Eric Rice
TDavid: I've never compared. The psp one is 1.3 megapixels and I haven't used its video editing software.. i'll try and do some compare shots. - Eric Rice
Would you say the photo and video quality is good or no? - Outsanity
audio quality from the camera is great, video, so-so (matt may recorded a video podcast with the cam, lemme find it) and picture, well, it's 1.3 mp, what do you think :) ... - Eric Rice
and if you use the word gay to mean cheerful? - gregory lent
Is it wack or whack, I thought it was with the h. Though I agree with "gay". I have a pet peeve for 'tight' to describe something good, same with 'the bomb' - I guess I'm just getting old. - AJ Kohn
so i can't even talk about katty perry's song, ur so gay? i like that song. it's so gay. (nah but seriously, a lot of kids use that word -- it came back out from the late 80s and early 90s.) is it the equivalent of everyone thinking they can say "n" cuz it's in all the rap songs? - Lynne d Johnson
Aj, I'm no good at keeping it straight in my own writing but I'm pretty sure it's "wack". Whack is like Whack-A-Mole. Wrong idea. - Jason Toney
It's definitely wack and not whack -- at least that's the way we said it in the 80s. Either it was wack or it was def. - Lynne d Johnson
"last night and today, we witnessed the pop culture birthing of one Dayron Robles, Cuban 110 meter hurdler, world record holder and Olympic gold medal winner. Indeed, he is fast as all get out, and he seems heroically impervious to our fear of a hurdle wrecking our genitalia in Olympic ignobility, but that is not what makes him great.
First, in an Olympic Games populated with freakishly attractive athletes who train in world-class American, Chinese and European facilities, Dayron looks like Raj from What's Happening!. He wears wire-rimmed spectacles held in place by Croakies that look like they were cut from an old boot, hangs tinny gold chokers around his neck and keeps time with a fresh executive watch." - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet
I really want to read this book. Think I'll be doing an ILL soon. - JMS
I'm with Cecily. K&C blew me away and was a hard act to follow. - Jason Puckett
My wife is reading this one right now. - John Fink
I want to read this and K&C, but I read Gentlemen of the Road last year and really liked it. - Katie
The kind of book that makes me want to give up writing because my own words will never compare, but at the same time impresses me so much with the power of story that I have to tell the ones rolling around my own head. - Kyle Hebert
Have I told you lately that I love you? - Nine (9)
BUT ALL DIFFERENTLY SKINNED PPL ARE TEH SAME. (I'm totally using 'differently skinned' to sound ridiculously PC, just so you don't take that as something I'd seriously use. :P) - Heather
This is why I keep writing stories where the main characters aren't white and aren't just a plot device. Because out of all of my favourite sci-fi books, I can count on one hand the number of black characters that aren't just there to further along the white lead's journey. There's a reason it took me 20 years to embrace sci-fi--I never felt like it had anything to offer me, and sometimes that's still in question. - Evangeline
wow. just wow. I'm trying to think of significant black characters in sci-fi books, and I drawing blanks right now. I know I'm tired and fuzzy-brained, but wow. - Harvey Simmons
Most COC that show up for more than five minutes are usually just Magical Negroes there to make the white characters' journeys a little easier. It's so frustrating. - Evangeline
I'd actually like to try writing a non-white character someday, just because I don't think I really ever have. - Heather
None of the leads in most of my stories are white. Lilith is an alien, so she doesn't count; most of the people in my really big story that wouldn't die were black, Asian, Hispanic or half-white/half POC, and the story I'm working on now has a white woman and a Mexican vampire. That's part of why I have to write as much as I do--even if no one ever sees it, at least I have something that proves that POC actually exist in science fiction. - Evangeline
Harvey, Walter Mosley's Futureland features sci-fi shorts all featuring POC. - Jason Toney
Walter Mosley? The "Easy Rollins" Walter Mosley? No idea he wrote sci-fi! - Harvey Simmons
Thanks, Jason! I'm looking this up on Amazon right now! - Harvey Simmons
I /knew/ I should've just bought that when I noticed it the other day. Thanks for the rec, Jason! - Evangeline
the wikipedia entry on Futureland is actually decent - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F.... To this point, it's his only leap into sci-fi and I think he did it for exactly the same reasons you outlined, Evangeline. The space is lacking in black protagonists. - Jason Toney
just read Apex Hides the hurt and it was amazing... no real point, just sharing. - anna
eve: you should really check out Elizabeth Bear's stuff if you haven't already. - Nine (9)
This is why I stick to elfs and dwarfs. - Geoff Schultz
I've had similar feelings about this for more than a hot-minute, too. "Network" would be more appropriate but I like "Loose Weak Tie" even better. - Do You KNOW Clarence? via Alert Thingy
I don't think sockets have ruined the word... they've just popularized the teen girl definition - Roger Benningfield
yeah clarence i remember you talking about this. it just hit me today. some cats on plaxo categories us as "friends" even though "business contact" is available as a category. i didn't even remember who some of these people were! How can you be my friend if I don't recognize your name? - Baratunde Thurston
only if you let it. when i add a contact on flickr, i don't add them as friends unless i hang with them a lot. - faboo mama
"Megan Ceder is among the world's top electronic athletes. Like other young athletes, she juggles life as a college student and a member of the team LA Complexity, specializing in virtual fighting games.
Ceder, 21, has broken numerous video game records in nearly six years of gaming, and she continues to train four to six hours day.
While video games might be considered a stretch as an Olympics-worthy sport, Ceder says she considers the level of skill and training needed to excel at electronic gaming to be on par with such sports as archery and shooting." - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet
Hey, I love video games, but I still think a rec game should NOT be in a sporting competition. - Nick Munson
“Gary Vee's keynote set me off and aside from throwing the bus at him and his fanboys, I also have shared the wisdom of "I just wish social media would jump the shark already, so everyone can stop hangin all over everyone else's dick". Thank you, have a nice day.”
“I'm finding that there's an inverted social media in Diigo, it's putting content first with people underneath-- so I search for topic X- see who the contributors are. Other sites may have his but for some reason, inversion never popped out at me before.”
This is awesome on so many levels. I was a huge fan of Savage Dragon once, and I didn't even know artist Erik Larson was still producing the book. - Kyle Hebert via Bookmarklet
"This month, King is dipping his toe into the Internet yet again. To promote Just After Sunset — his first volume of short stories in six years — King's publisher, Scribner, has teamed up with Marvel Comics and CBS Mobile to produce and distribute an online comic adaptation of a previously unreleased story from the collection." - Kyle Hebert via Bookmarklet
I just gobbled up the first 15 (of 25) episodes of this and it's an intriguing tale. I find King to be more eerie in short form than in his novels, and this doesn't disappoint. Also the art and style of this "video comic" are a perfect fit for the story. - Kyle Hebert
King seems to be one of the smart artists embracing online marketing. He recently did a bunch of online video for his Duma Key release. You can see his online interview here: http://www.bookvideos.tv/video... (disclosure: my company manages the bookvideos.tv web site) - Morgan
"Good morning. Breakfast is the most important part of the day, right? To taunt you a little, LAist Featured Photos contributor, Foodwoolf submitted this breakfast pizza with speck and egg from Little Dom's on Hillhurst." - Jason Toney via Bookmarklet
