I've duelled that guy several times. He's nice but I told him his toon name HAS to go. All his toons have "fart" in the name.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Lazerturkey <- if he wasn't lvl 80 I'd think he was a rouge for turkeying for the Pilgrim stuff.
- Lindsay
HelloKitteh <- ok, I had to giggle at that one.
- Lindsay
Any name where the player was so completely incapable of thinking of something original that they had to use accent marks. I've got the "how to type it" thing down (chatter or prat) but it's irritating.
- mjc
I pretty much refuse to interact with anyone for whom I can't type their name... Not worth my time to figure out how to do it... They're "dead" to me.
- Lindsay
I feel the same way. If there's non-standard characters in their name, they're just another NPC.
- Internet's Tad
Can't you just shift+click? (/me likes using accent marks in toon names, even when there aren't other players with names without accents :D)
- Victor Ganata
@Lindsay dunno why, but when you wrote '"dead" to me', I giggled, as my DK is "deadlikeme" :p
- mjc
When chatting with someone in-game, does anyone ever actually use more than the first few letters of someone's toon's name?
- Victor Ganata
Not really. :) Even in Vent, I get called "Tiny" or "Funky". I keep requesting to be called "Ms. Pants" but nobody complies. Your toon, however...I don't think it's possible to shorten yours and not look like an asshole. Which is why I just call you Vic. :D
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Heh, out-of-game, people have been known to shorten my real name just to V. And not just when typing.
- Victor Ganata
Ok now that's just lazy and sad. LOL Then again, I have friends who literally call me "A". But that stems back to it being something I was called online for a number of years. So it's not lazy, it's endearing. :)
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I do when typing, I type the first three letters and hit tab
- mjc
There's a well known pally on Firetree called Holyhawtness with an alt names Lilhawtness. They annoy the $h*t out of me. There's a lot of pot reference names too but honestly none are memorable.

OMAN are those your raiding gloves? My mom knit me some fingerless gloves and everyone makes fun of me. But I luff them. Yours are cutter though. ^_^ (raiding in pigtails is win)

Just spent about 1000G on gems and enchants this evening instead of going to sleep at a reasonable hour. Am I reading this right? I'm almost ready for Naxx 10?!?! LOL! Who came up with gear score, anyway? :D
There's a discrepancy between what an instance was intended for and what people actually want to run with: people seem to only want to take people who are out-geared for an instance, so you're looking for a green bar up to Naxx (~1700 GS; probably more for tanks). But you're totally geared for all the heroics now!
- Mark Trapp
I find that stuff to not be that accurate, but then again I'm a holy pally that doesn't do holy light, so apparently I'm breaking the game. Anyhow, it's not hard to be ready for Naxx (it's cake if you can handle strat, threat, and moving). It's more about what people will accept. Do daily heroics like whoa pants and you'll get badge gear to help out with opinion. Plus, making a good impression can get you pug invites.
- Heather
I don't know about sad... but I fit the other two categories. Also found this interesting "Adult video gamers of both sexes relied more on the Internet for social support than non-gamers, which supports prior research suggesting that adult video game players may "sacrifice real-world social activities to play video games"".

umm.. :( The fact I am turning 35 next week does not make me happy about this which makes me sad... hate when they are right.

Yes, rather than going to a tweetup, I spent a night SMASHING FACES in WoW! And it felt good. Not 35 yet though. And sad? When I'm SMASHING FACES! I'm usually pretty happy. But when my face gets melted, then I'm not happy. I am angry. rawr.
- Arlan Koizumi
At first I thought it was funny that the median age of the average gamer was getting older and older, but then I realized, the gamers when the average age was 20-something are now of course, older. So I think these studies are following the generation that's really the first one that started gaming.
- Arlan Koizumi
I'm not 35 and I'm not overweight, I might be sad but I'd say stressed is more accurate. Plus, I love my WoW friends, they might not come over my house but I talk to them all the time and they're great. It might not be the same quality as offline friendships, but that doesn't mean online friendships don't "count".
- Heather
Hey guys, anyone around that can log in really quick to invite my alt to the guild? (yes, she's a DK, yes, she's my second DK, but DUDE, I had to have a Gnome DK called Tinkee!)
I was getting kinda punchy by the time we got to Brann. Quite possibly if I had been more awake, we would have succeeded.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
No, honestly, there's no way we could have. You guys need more upgraded gear on you before we can try that one again. Like I said last night, you need to focus on the preliminary heroics first to get your badge gear up before you move on to the more difficult ones. H HoS is too beefy of a heroic for this particular group.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
You really need to start out with UK, Nexus, VH, and CoS on heavy rotation. THEN move on to UP, DTK, and Gundrak. And THEN move up to AN, OK, HoS, HoL. I would not recommend Oc at all unless everyone has been doing their Wyrmrest dailies so they're familiar with drake mount fighting.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Right now, Vic's health is too low, Sean's spell power is too low, and your DPS is too low to be able to work together in H HoS. If you each ran it with a more powerful group, you'd be fine. Vic did well when I brought in a bunch of OP people to finish off the Tribunal and the last boss. He just got horsekicked by the laser beam.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
On a related note, looking at all of your gear, there is a marked lack of enchantments that could be very beneficial to all of you. Just because something is a blue or green doesn't mean it shouldn't get an enchant. Especially when you have an end-game enchanter at your disposal (me). If you're not sure what should be enchanted or what to enchant with, check yourself on WoW-Heroes. It will give you recommendations for what enchant
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I also see several empty sockets. You should always gem up your sockets, even if you have to go with a less expensive one that you can afford. Don't pass up the opportunity for additions to stats. If you're a blacksmith, you can add sockets to some of your items. You should do so. If you're a jewelcrafter, you can craft JC-only gems. Do it. And share between your professions. If you can craft an item for someone that is wayyyyy beneficial to them, then do it. LW's, BS's, and Tailors, I'm looking at you.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I thought I had started ok on gems and enchants I need better chest, hands and weapons. Since you seem to have time on your hands, why don't you compile a list of some gear I should try to acquire. :D
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Or how about this? How about y'all just keep bashing your head against the Tribunal wall while I move on to other things? I could have spent several hours working on my research paper last night instead of acquiring a 60g total repair bill, using three Flasks of Endless Rage, and dropping 7 fish feasts. I don't expect gratitude. That's not why I do this. I like running with you guys. But I'm not about to give you a helpful assessment and be met with snark. I have better things to do with my time. kthxbai.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Woah woah whoa. I was kidding. Not trying to be snarky at all. Sorry :(
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
And thanks for the assessment, Amanda. It's good to know the specific reasons why we kept eating shit and dying. Gear is a lot easier to upgrade than skill :D Still, I think I've probably gotten as far as I can get with gear I can buy without dumping thousands of GPs into the AH for crafted purples. I really need to start picking up badge gear and/or leveling my BS skill.
- Victor Ganata
My lack of mana and low spell power def has a lot to do with it. I only have one purple item, and it's a ring. I seriously need better gear. I'm gonna start rep grinding as of tonight just to get some decent blues at least.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
One thing to keep in mind is that when you run with a group that's mostly overgeared (which is the case with most pugs), heroics should only take about a half-hour. You can run one or two heroics a night and get a really nice bump in your rep grinding, a few badges, experience, and possibly a few blues that should save you some time. I think waiting for DYSP-only runs, if you're interested in getting geared, is doing you guys a disservice.
- Mark Trapp
And yeah, even when running with OP groups, HoS Tribunal is still a pain in the butt. The first successful one I did we only won by dumb luck: we wiped 3 seconds before the event ended, so we got credit. The second one was only because the healer, the tank, and a DPS were in full TotC 25 gear. When I pug heroics, I try to stick with the easy fast ones: Gundrak, Violet Hold, Culling of Stratholme, and Utgarde Keep.
- Mark Trapp
Except that I hate PUGs. With a blinding fiery passion. I always get stuck in a group with a couple elitist assholes who want to tell me how to play my character, or on a single wipe freak out and start cursing everyone out. I know it's slow to wait for DYSP runs, but if the alternative is what I described above, then I'll gladly wait it out.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I dunno, I see it as free advice you don't have to take. You always have the option to leave the group if someone's being a real prick or never grouping with that person again. What do you care what a stranger thinks of how you play? You're there to get loot from them, so joke's on them. For DYSP runs though, I think we just need to run things that aren't HoS tribunal for a while: we...

Actually it's better for them to run it as a guild because if they continue to rely on OP people carrying them through runs, they will never improve as players. Last night was the first time I've EVER failed Tribunal, and I've actually run it with gear-appropriate groups before....

We had problems on EVERY boss. And we lagged between pulls because Sean was having to mana up a lot. Just because we survived a fight doesn't mean we did it well. It means we were fucking LUCKY.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I didn't get that impression at all. I feel confident in our teamwork and always have. We need practice, sure, but no need to crap all over what we did accomplish last night. I think we all need to step away from this thread because people are getting upset. It was one run, and a late night one at that.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
If the purpose of the game, and the guild, is to have fun, I don't know what the value of doing things like this are if everyone's going to get upset with each other about how a run went. Let's do stuff that doesn't result in a nasty thread like this being created.
- Mark Trapp
Sean - I was speaking of one person specifically, not the entire group as a whole. We'll discuss offline if you need more information. I was already done with this thread hours ago but came back because I think advising you to just run with OP groups so you can gear up is a poor attitude to have; I don't want to see you guys getting in that rut. It makes for shitty team players and you're better than that.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Well, let's get it out in the open. There were 5 people in the group, and obviously you or Sean aren't the person you're referring to. If it was Victor, I doubt you'd have finished the run later with him. So either it's me or Gunny, and I really don't think you have a problem with Gunny. So what's your problem? What did I do that has you railing about how awful last night was?
- Mark Trapp
My problem? Well really, it seems that I *am* the problem. So what I'm going to do now is unsub from this group and when I get home, I will pull my toons from the guild. My presence has created a disharmony and it's better for y'all if I stepped completely away. I apologize if I've ruined anyone's gameplay. It was not my intention. I just wanted to help and apparently every time I do that, I just piss you all off even more. So. I'm outtie.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Come on, don't do that (if you haven't done it already). I've lurked in this group and it seemed to me you all got along more than you fought. Wouldn't it be better if you folks got together in vent or ingame and just talk things over?
- Arlan Koizumi
Re-reading the top... badge gear farming is nice, but really right now, that's trying to jump a step. Prior to the whole easy conquest badge farming, you only could farm heroism badges in heroics. That's pretty much gear before doing Naxx hardcore (just about Naxx 10-man). The gear progression should be instance/quest > rep/crafted purples > heroics/badge gear > fracking raiding...

- Arlan Koizumi
You're right Arlan, but I'd argue that running heroics is the fastest way to gain rep (when compared to daily quests). When you can get ~1500-2000 rep from one heroic run vs. 750/day of rep for Wyrmrest, I don't think it's a bad idea to run a heroic with overpowered pugs to get what you need to run what you want. I thought last night was purely a gear issue, and to me, getting gear is a...

Looking at the almighty Gear Score as a benchmark, I have one of 3217 which is BARELY acceptable for 10 man Naxx. I picked up a couple of pieces from the article Vic linked. Thanks Vic.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Hmm. What are you using to calculate Gear Score?
- Victor Ganata
I've found most people refer to the wow-heroes.com instead of the AddOn, which uses a different formula. It looks like yours is 1367 (url: http://wow-heroes.com/index...). Just adding enchants should bump that up a hundred points or so.
- Mark Trapp
Well, you have a lot of room on your enchants :)
- Victor Ganata
Mark: I agree too. Rep grinding can be fast in heroics. But yes, "lower level" heroics would probably be better to tackle right now. When you start doing stuff like HoS, HoL, UK, things can get hairy if you don't have the basic gear for the difficulty. Unfortunately, I can't remember if doing HoS on regular will give you rep (I'm thinking only level 80 instances gives rep without it being heroic).
- Arlan Koizumi
finding enchanters who will do stuff for me NAO without Mats is the challenge :D
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Regular HoS won't (although regular HoL will.) To be sure, when we tried running H UK without anyone who was overgeared, it was kind of a struggle, although it was gratifying to make improvements and slowly get through it after each wipe. I don't think we'll be running H HoS any time soon without any overpowered assistance.
- Victor Ganata
I've been buying scrolls from the AH mostly. And then there are the enchants you can get from different factions after you grind enough rep. This is probably a lot easier than trying to get mats when you can't DE things.
- Victor Ganata
These tips will probably be old news, but if not, cool beans. Ret Pally: 1) Repentance when you can and HoJ mobs. In a learning group, every bit of cc is helpful, 2) Use instant FoL on the tank or healer if the pally's own hp is ok, 3) BoP people if they're in trouble, 4) Save LoH for tank in really hard boss fights. DK: 1) Strangulate and Mind Freeze caster mobs to help mitigate...

You folks use raid icons to set primary and secondary targets? Can also use other icons to designate CC. For tanks, an alternative to enchants are armor patches. heavy borean kits give +18 stamina. Provided the tank already has head, shoulder and leg enchants, you can still get a 54 sta boost.
- Arlan Koizumi
As you solo, you should be getting a few green items. Besides selling them, give 'em to an enchanter friend to DE. And yeah, you can usually find scrolls with enchants in the AH.
- Arlan Koizumi
wow-loot.com shows you some gear you can get before raiding. I thought I saw this posted earlier but wow-gem.com is great for picking gems.

@Gunny it's not the most intuitive app, but it works. basically you want to make sure to put at least a gem and item enhancement in any place you can do so (don't tell rawr you want to enchant your rings if you're not an enchanter, for example), set filters to only instances/crafting/tokens you can get without much effort (perhaps don't include triumph gear if you don't do raids...

- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
It's often assumed by casual observers that the different kinds of avoidance are checked in sequence, e.g. first the server checks to see if the mob misses you; if it doesn't miss then the server checks to see if you parry; if you don't parry then the server checks for a dodge, etc. This makes intuitive sense, but it's not the way things actually work.
- Mark Trapp
What actually happens is the server makes a single "roll of the dice" to determine what happens on an attack, and all your avoidance chances, as well as your chance to be crit, are applied at the same time to that one roll. So for example, if a tank is naked and using a trash can lid as a shield, and has a 5% chance to be missed, 5% chance to dodge, 5% chance to parry and 5% chance to block, the server constructs a hit table that looks like this:
- Mark Trapp
01 - 05: miss (5%) 06 - 10: parry (5%) 11 - 15: dodge (5%) 16 - 20: block (5%) 21 - 95: hit (75%) 96 -100: crit (5%) ... and then a single random number between 1 and 100 determines the outcome.
- Mark Trapp
If a tank has a 10% chance to be missed, a 10% chance to dodge, 10% chance to parry, 10% chance to block, and has enough defense to be immune to critical hits, the table looks like this: 01 - 10: miss (10%) 11 - 20: parry (10%) 21 - 30: dodge (10%) 31 - 40: block (10%) 41 -100: hit (60%)
- Mark Trapp
If the tank has Holy Shield active, the chance of a block goes up to 40% and the chance of a regular hit goes down to 30. If the tank has Holy Shield active and Redoubt procs, the chance of a block is 70%, and it is impossible for an attack to hit without being blocked. The important thing to be aware of here is that the more of each kind of avoidance you have, the more valuable the...
- Mark Trapp
Doing damage to something is the reverse of this: hit decreases the chance to miss, and expertise decreases the chance to be parried or dodged. So the more expertise and hit you have, the less effective an opponent's defense stats are.
- Mark Trapp
Oh, and spells cannot be mitigated by dodge, parry, or block, so expertise doesn't do anything for spell casters. Dealing with spell casters is the domain of three other stats: resilience, which decreases the chance to be crit and decreases the amount of damage a successful crit does (this only affects player spells, not mob spells, so it's a pvp only stat), spell resistance, which...

useful to note that people very often think that block is avoidance... it isn't. it's mitigation
- mjc
@Miriella, he's talking about avoiding or mitigating spells taken (as in tanking)
- mjc
This explanation is definitely helpful. I've always wondered why some people consider expertise a tanking stat, but I guess it can really screw up your threat generation if you get dodged or parried. From what I understand, it seems like boss parry-haste isn't as much of a consideration anymore, though.

"Well, here we go again. For years we've questioned the wisdom of using real world laws to deal with issues within virtual worlds. You begin to open up quite the Pandora's Box of problems. If it's okay to charge someone for theft of virtual goods in a virtual world, what do you do if "theft" is a part of the game? And then does killing another character in a virtual world become "murder"? These issues are coming up again as Slashdot points out that a guy in the UK has been arrested for "robbery" of a player in the online world RuneScape. In this case, the arrested guy used a phishing scheme to get access to the username and password, making it similar to a story from two years ago involving "stolen goods" in Habbo Hotel that involved a similar "hacking" of an account. But, again, it seems questionable to call this a robbery. Why not just charge the guy with violation of whatever laws there are against phishing or fraud, rather than robbery. So my alt (which I keep forgetting to get an invite for) is currently a level 14 human warrior. I'm wandering around Westfall and a level 23 mage asks me if I want to do DM, and I say, sure. Little did I realize that, despite being the lowest level toon in the group, and despite there being a higher level paladin, they expected me to tank.
- Victor Ganata
Which I didn't really end up doing, because we had a crazed nelf hunter in our party who refused to stop and let the priest and mage go on mana breaks, who refused to wait for people to come back from their corpse runs, and who would get pissed when he would die after running way too far ahead of the main party.
- Victor Ganata
The paladin in our group also kept demanding we change looting options to free-for-all. I guess so that he wouldn't have to work too hard to ninja loot. Not that I really care if I get phat loot from DM, but eventually the crazed nelf hunter snapped at him, and the paladin left with a "fuck you." We found another paladin. Who was still higher level than me. And who also didn't want to tank.
- Victor Ganata
Somehow, despite various party members dying several times even before we got to the instance portal, we eventually make it to Sneed and his Shredder and predictably, we wipe. We go on our corpse run. Crazed nelf hunter is the first to get back. Before anyone else gets back, he engages the shredder once again, and then goes on an all caps tirade about how no one was helping him. Despite the fact we kept telling him to wait. The new paladin, who obviously recognizes the futility of the situation, leaves.

Oh yeah! I KNEW it was going to be bad, but they are so rare for me that I just had to do it. (Besides, it makes for a good story) BM spec - we had an ex-guildie hunter pet that used to tank Hakkar - your pet totally would have done a better job tanking UP, lol! I just start wanding whenever I pull aggro, Ms. Pants (I'm learning!). And definitely, there was that part of me that wanted...

Oh that's so sweet of them. :D Yeah, with my group, when I offered to be the official DE of the group, they got all wide-eyed and were like "Why would you DE anything? We need gear upgrades!" and then someone inspected me and they got wide-eyed all over again. LOL What's funny is that I actually tanked alongside my pet...which was a cat. :) My guild teases me about being a Hunter Tank...

screw that, I would have joined and said "listen, he doesn't have the gear to tank this and I don't need a repair bill to prove that" and bail. :P but I understand the temptation....

I have critter bites coming out my ass. They were good for a quest and achievement, but now I'm stuck with ten stacks. About ready to throw them in the GB.

LOL Keep an eye on the guild bank then. :) I'll try to remember to send them over from my hunter this week.

OK, I have like 6 or 7 stacks that I sent over to my shammy before I went to bed last night. I will make a note to myself to get onto my shammy tonight and hand 'em out to y'all, or at least send them to you via mail. :D

""In June 2009, Dr Neil Johnson published a paper titled "Human group formation in online guilds and offline gangs driven by a common team dynamic" in Physical Review E that found the way in which WoW "guilds" form can be described by a mathematical model that can also be applied to an unrelated group of people, namely street gangs in Los Angeles. Since "Any group that satisfies these fairly autonomous, competitive criteria would also (fit the model)," said Dr Johnson, the findings are of interest to those combating international as well as local terrorist cells.""

Awesome name. They may have created it years ago and is just now playing it. I have a level 24 undead priest named Bacteria which is now unavailable on most servers but i've had it for several years. I just rarely play it.
