Players across Azeroth have recently embraced a new, very personal achievement: leveling a character "Iron Man" style. What started out as only a small movement, this bare bones, no-frills style of play has now transformed into a community-wide call-to-arms known as the Iron Man WoW Challenge, inviting World of Warcraft enthusiasts to see how close they can get to level cap with only the barest of necessities. The goal of the Iron Man WoW challenge is simple: reach level 85. The catch, however, is that you must accomplish this task without the assistance of talents, class specialization, stat-improved gear, professions, buffs, item enhancements, or other players. And if you die? Well, then it’s back to square one. Here are some of the latest rules: THE BIG ONE: If you die, EVER, that character is removed from the challenge. [...]
- Chris Topher
There is no way I would attempt this on a PVP server
- Chris Topher
They should make a server that handles this. No buffing of strangers, no dungeons/raids/battlegrounds/arenas, obviously no PvP. If you die, the character gets reset to level one, and inventory is lost.
- Jimminy, CoG of FF
Jimminy: also: no heals (except self-heals), no transfer of money / items between players (directly or by mail), no grouping, and the only player who can damage a target is the player who tapped it (and will get xp credit for the kill).
- Tudor Bosman
My friend gave me access to his SWTOR for a couple days to see if my graphics card can handle it (because he needs an upgrade) it finally finished downloading, and now the dog won't get off my lap so I can play!
so now I'm in an awkward position. I want to keep playing. But not on my friends account lol. So I may cut myself off til I can get myself a copy (Improv classes come first) So that is why I haven't met up with anyone in game yet. Ooh, but important question! If I go with a Smuggler, do I eventually get a kickass trenchcoat?
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
From what I have read, the Rebel classes have armor that is what you would expect them to have, so it could be likely.
- Chris Topher
My smuggler (at level 30) has a longcoat. Doesn't look like a trenchcoat, but it reminds me of Mal so that's good enough.
- Arlan K.
sweet! True story, in Star Wars Galaxies, I made quite a bit of money because I became a tailor (or whatever the equivalent was called, I can't remember at the moment) and specialized in Firefly themed outfits.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
I tried, it doesn't recognize the serial number :(
- Chris Topher
:( I think my friend was able to use the FFXIV security key for WoW, so if you wanted to waste money and play a crap game, you can use your WoW key for that pos.
- Arlan K.
He figured out WoW is 6 numbers and SWTOR is 8.

I officially can't give up on WoW until after April.... Children's week is all that stands between Hoban and his Violet Proto-drake at this point. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch some more SWTOR cinematics...
Anyone else find the sexism in MMOs getting more and more blatant? In SWTOR female characters get less companion favor then male for some things. There is no companion that has less affection when a male character gives them a gift.
I haven't noticed that particular issue at all...what I have noticed is that SW:TOR has more female high-ranking NPCs (and in my class storyline, the women are devious and engaged in pursuits typically given to male characters in other games I've played) and I haven't had to encounter (so far) skimpy outfits or and I can play with raw ambition and I'm pretty unapologetically powerful....

- joey
Apparently you can marry a companion? And same sex marriage is supposed to be implemented eventually.
- <3Heather<3
Oh, I'm disappointed that it isn't already :(
- joey
I am really glad that there aren't any pieces of gear that are insanely reveling (like the WoW bras). That's an issue that made my blood boil. Although I haven't been to a canteena without a dancing Twi'lek holo. It's such a back and forth with taking out some sexist things and adding others.
- <3Heather<3
The outfit is fully moddable, so you can wear it from level 1 to level 50 if you swap the mods.
- Tudor Bosman
I didn't know about the difference in companion affection based on whether the player is male or female. Source? Companions do like "courting" gifts differently based on whether the player is in a romance with them or not, and you can only be in a romance with certain companions of the opposite sex. Each class gets 1 male romanceable companion (for female players) and 1 or 2 female romanceable companions (for male players, depending on class).
- Tudor Bosman
The wikis aren't fully updated I guess and I jumped to conclusions. One site had stars for how much companions liked gifts and female characters had fewer stars for some stuff. But we found another source (oldrepublic.net) that says anything labeled with affection level "love" is based on opposite gender from the companion. Then I found the moddable "slave" outfit for the Empire yesterday. >.<
- <3Heather<3
Can you customize him to have a face visor?
- Victor Ganata
I made him the race with no eyes (I forget the name) with the very slim rectangular sunglasses type shades.
- Chris Topher
I've been meaning to make a Miraluka (the race without eyes, who sees through the Force) Jedi and call him Geordi LaForce. (you get to give your characters a last name when your first character finishes act 1, around level 30 - 35) Unfortunately, I only thought of this hours after I'd picked a (different) last name for my characters.
- Tudor Bosman
I wonder if any icon makers might make "... ALL THE THINGS!" style icons for the SWTOR classes. I would kind of love (ie kill for) an "ELECTROCUTE ALL THE THING!" icon with a pink Twi'lik doing Force Lightning. ^_^
Okay this is weird. First a WoW friend buys SWTOR for Heather, and now I find out today that Gamestop has it for $50 instead of the normal $60......a roadtrip might be in order.... #theuniverseistellingustoplay
We will have to split time b/w that and our friend's server as empire :P
- Chris Topher
Tentatively on Zaalbar I have Kytty the Jedi. I'm playing the mirror class on our friend's server so I might reroll, but it will be the same name. If anyone's interested, the other server we're on is Naddist Rebels and my name is Medini (Sith Inquisitor).
- <3Heather<3
You can now form same-faction raids with Real ID friends, allowing you to enter Raid Finder in groups larger than 5, run older normal or heroic raids, or participate in Battlegrounds. http://us.battle.net/wow...
I'll be playing WoW again as soon as I can replace the external drive.
- Moody (Sweet FA 4 Life)
I'm, uh, trying to avoid WoW, apparently. Been playing anything but WoW and I missed the opportunity to be OP with my Ret Pally. Ah well. Besides, you got my RID. If you really want to hit some bgs though, I can manage to log in sometime.
- Arlan K.
Heh, no worries. I've been splitting my game time between Skyrim, WoW, and now FFXIII-2, so I haven't been too consistent either.
- Victor Ganata
I only just opened my FFXIII-2 last night. I intended to start it over the weekend, but I wanted to redeem my pre-order codes asap and figured if I was doing that, I might as well pop the disc in. Only went as far as past the opening cinematic and gained control of Noel and Serah. Too short a time to really recognize Serah's voice actress, so I'm unsure if knowing she's Jaina's voice will affect my gameplay. (I'm really annoyed with the Jaina character fyi)
- Arlan K.
Most of the time, Serah and Jaina don't sound anything alike, but once in a while, I get flashbacks from running the Icecrown 5 mans over and over and over and over again.
- Victor Ganata
Someone had their way with this page: "Jedi Sentinel is one of two Advanced Classes for the Jedi Knight, the other being the Jedi Drone." [...] "The most important stat for the Sentinel is strength and butthurt."

hrm... 12 GB of asset downloading after installing from disc this soon after launch is... excessive. Especially when I have a monthly transfer quota. This is going to take all day using full bandwidth. ARG #swtor
SWTOR was rushed out the door, probably by pressure from EA to release before the holidays. There are still many (mostly minor) bugs, but last week's patch (1.1) fixed some of the more annoying ones.
- Tudor Bosman
Not to mention introducing other existing ones to folks who haven't suffered them before. I'm getting screen flickering and now, besides Aric, I have other NPCs that just don't want to holster/sheath their weapons. Haven't spent much time on my character who's on Tatooine so I haven't seen if they addressed the green laser show/screen thing. Also, I just started getting control...

- Arlan K.
I'm a software engineer and am no stranger to tight (sometimes impossibly so) release schedules, so I have a lot of sympathy for the developers. They probably hate the current situation even more than we do. I don't think that they've had very happy holidays.
- Tudor Bosman
Hopefully today's patch alleviates all screen flickering. I think that's the most "legitimately" game-breaking glitch/bug to date. I never really noticed any game-breaking impact concerning ability delay, myself. Only thing irksome were animation resets, but with my highest level character (40) I was able to chain abilities well enough.
- Arlan K.
I expect that you'll soon be able to start toons of any class at level 60 (or even 70) just like you can do with DKs today. Say, for every character you have at max level, you can start another one at 70.
- Tudor Bosman
Tudor, I doubt they'd do that anytime soon, given how they recently revised most of the starting areas in Cata.
- Stephen Mack
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't expect it in MoP. But they once said they'd never bother with enabling flying in Old Azeroth either, so....
- Victor Ganata
I was considering it, but I think if I started playing, I would slip back into my "I don't do anything other than play and sleep" mode that I was in with WoW.
- Chris Topher
There's some people I know going to Belegren Colony so I'll be starting there, but I'll look into Zaalbar too.
- Arlan K.
I know someone on Krayt Dragon, but I'll probably check out Zaalbar depending on the load of each server.
- Rodfather
I've been playing a Bounty Hunter on Krayt Dragon for most part, but I created a Jedi Knight on Zaalbar as well. Both 'Rodfather'
- Rodfather
I have Gryffin (main, Jedi Shadow, tank) and Breys (alt, Vanguard); Jeanette has Aelaria (Gunslinger).
- Tudor Bosman
Cool. I'm reserving some names. Created Rodney and Rodzilla
- Rodfather
Oh sweet. 'Nobody' was available. Tribute to Nobody in the movie Dead Man
- Rodfather
Right now I'm on Port Nowhere because an old legion mate from Aion told me to be. I think I'll create a Jedi on another server, though. He made me be Sith, and I feel like I am betraying my childhood dreams!
- joey
My husband is going to get a copy, too. So we'll create Jedis on Zaalbar if we can.
- joey
Ping! if you're not playing on Zaalbar, you should; if you are, send Gryffin an in-game mail.
- Tudor Bosman
Jeanette and I have been sick last week so we stayed home and played a lot, so we'll probably hit level 50 this weekend.
- Tudor Bosman
We might want a PVP server, so I'm still debating what my second will be.
- joey
(literally) 20 crashes was my limit for the night. At least I got my hat....but then I ate my fruitcake while my Winter's Veil clothes were at 0 durability and I didn't get the achieve...so now I have a ticket in for a piece of fruitcake! >.< 20 crashes
I have a 60 prepaid WoW card that I got for Christmas last year. I don't have plans to return to WoW, so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in setting up some sort of trade?
Announced today, Blizz's answer to objections to RealID revealing too much info: "What is a Battle.net BattleTag? A BattleTag is a unified, player-chosen nickname that will identify you across all of Battle.net – in Blizzard Entertainment games, on our websites, and in our community forums. Similar to Real ID, BattleTags will give players on Battle.net a new way to find and chat with friends they've met in-game, form friendships, form groups, and stay connected across multiple Blizzard Entertainment games. BattleTags will also provide a new option for displaying public profiles."

The beta, rough around the edges to be expected, still managed to get me mostly sold. If I can afford paying subs for two MMOs, then I'll most likely be playing SW:TOR when it comes out.
- Arlan K.
I only really have four apps: the Armory, Ask Mr. Robot (a gear optimizer), EnchantGuru and GemGuru which just lets you browse enchants and gems. The rest are just bookmarks: WoWInsider, WoW Heroes, a level flow map for Cataclysm, and a link to the armory website.
- Victor Ganata
Oops, for some reason my brain mixed Victor and Steven! Victor, thanks. I let me account lapse, but am rethinking of re-upping it
- ωαřмaiden ☆TeamOtto☆
I JUST started playing again, Blizz send me a please come back 7 day freebie, haven't decided if I'll stay because I has no one to play with
- G Dub of the Carolinas
You don't use the authenticator, Victor?
- Stephen Mack
I think everyone is either still playing Skyrim, or is on the SWTOR beta. If I'm on, it's usually not until 8pm PST :(
- Victor Ganata
I'm considering getting Skyrim and also installing Windows 7 on my Mac for Star Wars.
- G Dub of the Carolinas
Stephen, I actually have the authenticator on my old iPod Touch. I haven't moved it over, because I'm now freaked out that even disabling it for a few seconds is going to get my account hacked :D
- Victor Ganata
Maybe not, but I like using my iPad to look stuff up instead of tabbing out of the WoW client, and it runs smoother than using the website on an iPad.
- Victor Ganata
I like it on the iPhone, but my phone is old and slow, I keep teeter tottering on getting the iPad version.
