They are dropouts, but it is not always college that people in LA are dropping out of. It is more often a middle-class family, a suburban lifestyle, an aspiration class, a set of defaults and expectations. Life doesn't need to be lived the way everyone else lives it in order to be happy.
Or, to be miserable. Instead of soft bigotry you get slow suicide. The hipsters I know are often sexual fatalists. They fail to plan ahead. They stagger from one damaged "relationship" to the next, hoping to make it safely to a negotiable monogamy made comfortable by the weight of both partners' baggage. what if our hipsters are, in some strange way, our conscience?
