"Sarcasm aside, most bloggers don't make a cent from blogging and the global demand for mostly poorly-written blogs about technology news pales in comparison to the global demand for music. Because of this, the debate in the blogosphere is of little mainstream importance." - He has a point... - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason, that is a good point. That's why, in my mind, some of the annoyance I hear about how smaller blogs don't have a "fair" piece of the ad pie is completely silly. What do they offer that others don't? How can they grow to be sustainable and deliver advertisers a reputable, buying audience? If they are a "me too" blog without a unique streak, the answer is not good. - Louis Gray
What's "fair" to me is making enough to cover hosting costs and buy myself some toys every once in a while. I do that, which is enough. But if I couldn't even cover hosting costs, I'd stop blogging. While I'm not interested in creating a business out of the blog (say like Steven), I'm also not interested in expending tons of effort gaining intangible stuff like "reputation" or "fame". I'd rather have monetary compensation and remain anonymous. That last bit reminded me how trivial tech blogging is. - Jason Kaneshiro
"But it's a good debate to have because it shows that in the tech blogosphere, many who live in glass houses are throwing stones." -- that closing paragraph is exactly why its a poorly written article. What would have been great is if he had found and quoted bloggers who are living in those glass houses, i.e. supported "steal everything" and then got upset when their feeds were scraped. In fact, I don't think (with one rare exception yesterday) I've run across a single example. - Tony Hung
