Spectacular site. Thanks, Emma - Michael W. May
Michael, they say "a picture tells a 1000 stories" and I think this site is a classic example of that saying. - Emma
I love the picture of Anne Frank - Lindsey
The thing about these photos is that we trust them to be the truth and in that lies their power; I wonder if the age of photoshop will photos lose power as the become more perfect, and somewhat less trustworthy - RAPatton
Okay, I didn't believe that "5-year-old mother" picture until I read this: http://www.snopes.com/pregnant... Astonishing! - David Young
I'm with you on that one RAP. A lot of the photographs I see lately I wonder if they were shopped. And then I appreciate them a lot less. - Lindsey
nice collection, but kinda strange there aren't any real joyfull moments in that list .. maybe that says something ? - Pascal
That five year old mother can't be true that is weird! - Joe Dawson (beta)
It's unfortunate that most of the Chinese people have never seen the 3rd image. - Chris Luckhardt
Thanks. great site - Roberto Bonini
Three from 9/11? And none from Hurricane Katrina. Nothing from the Hubble. No photo of Bush standing under a "Mission Accomplished" sign looking like an idiot. All great photos, but I question what was included in the gallery vs not. - Eric P
@RAPatton: All photographs lie. That's their nature. They're a single frame of a single moment, devoid of larger context. Photographers didn't always have Photoshop, but they could always point their camera in one direction rather than another, choose to frame it to leave something out, and choose to shoot a frown rather than a smile, all of which color our perception of the larger reality. Not that I think these photos do that per se, just that it's not a new problem. - Eric P
@eric: its subjective. Did Hubble change the world the way the above events did? No. "Mission Accompished" only highlighted certain facts about the Bush administration that everyone knew already. Its a tough one for Katrina cause it definatly put global Warming on the map in a big way. - Roberto Bonini
I don't know how you leap from hurricane hits town that is poorly defended from hurricanes (and has been hit by them in the past) to "Katrina was caused by global warming." - Alex Scoble CISSP
It looks like most pictures were taken from the Life book with almost the same title. http://www.digitaljournalist.o... - Håkan Dahlström
Eric, they may have always lied, but we trusted them. I think that trust is deteriorating. - RAPatton
Not to be picky - but didn't the EVENTS in most of those change the world? The photos are strong and moving - but the events were still going to change everything. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
I think Hubble definitely changed the world - like "Blue Marble" and "Earthrise" before it, it really gave people a renewed sense of perspective and our place in the universe, as well as what it means to be human. Certainly if a photo of Niagara Falls frozen belongs, then so does the Hubble photo of the Eagle Nebula, or the Deep Field study. Or any of the photos from Mars sent back by the rovers, for that matter. - Eric P
Visual Clues are always strong. Like many, I only needed a quick glance at the two photos above here to recognize them. - Ian May
