How do you make decisions about society when comparing benefits present generations to future generations? Example: what if you do nothing about global warming, but put it in the bank, and have lots of money later to fix things up? - Amit Patel
Except that we have only one ecosystem that we can live with. There's no way to put that into the bank to fix things up. Once you've lost entire species to extinction, there's no way to get them back. - Piaw Na
No Time for the Singularity http://www.worldchanging.com/a... and Planktos, Geoengineering and Politics http://www.worldchanging.com/a... There is also much more to read about geoengineering on WorldChanging - Jason Wehmhoener
@Piaw: haven't you watched Jurassic Park? ;) - Amit Patel
Not wanting geoengineering because it removes the incentive for people not to use energy is like not wanting condoms because it removes the incentive for people not to have sex. - Amit Patel
Oh, I want geoengineering alright. I just don't believe in not taking action now because of the hope that we can "fix it all" later. Large parts of this planet are still incredibly beautiful to me, while the man-made deserts that exist today aren't. - Piaw Na
I want to get rid of all the nature-made deserts too. ;-) My crazy idea for Australia: dig a canal to the center of the continent, let sea water flow in, let it evaporate, and put down lots of black tarp somewhere downwind from there, so that hot air will rise and cause the moist air to form rain. - Amit Patel
