"Travelers flush or fortunate enough to get away, whether to the Amalfi Coast or to a friend’s pool in New Jersey, must labor to keep this season’s economic anxieties — plummeting home prices, tanking 401(k)’s, looming layoffs — off their minds.
This summer, the vacation has become a no-win situation: unattainable for those who can’t afford it, dispiriting and unsatisfying for many who can." - edythe via Bookmarklet
A good year for people to vacation at home. Spend time with the family for a week doing the stuff around you that you never have time for. Less stressful too. - Michael W. May
"Amalfi Coast?" Oh I love how they lump people who can't *afford* to take a vacation in with those suffering sticker shock over carpaccio drizzled in white truffle oil at Le Sirenuse. :-) - Karim
karim, hee. I know. part of the reason why i chose that quote. - edythe
good call. things is tough all over, i guess! why just the other day on sand hill road i saw a vc light his cigar with a $100 bill instead of a $500... ;-) - Karim
I think the worst part of this is the advent of the word, which will no doubt become word of the year, "staycation." Blurgh. - Mark Trapp
Couldn't you have just alluded to the word instead of saying it? :) - David Worrell
we're going to do a "staycation" this year. We're new to this area, so we wanted to play tourist and learn all about it and enjoy lots of local attractions, restaurants, natural parks, lakes, etc. and have FUN here ...save on gas and LESS STRESS. - Susan Beebe
An interesting service could calculate airline ticket price + baggage + airline food, vs. driving. Also provide carbon footprint, for comparison, on both. Does it exist? - Wade Dorrell
@waded dopplr uses some 3rd party for that... but i guess now it all turns into savings calculator, whether you are driving or flying - silpol
I usually just vacation in Delaware anyway, so I don't think it'll be different this year. - Morton Fox
So far, as far as I can tell, wiith planning travel is not that much more expensive yet. I have been traveling to LA since 1989 at least twice a year and I was able to get my most recent ticket for 231. That is about what I have paid for almost the last 20 years. - RAPatton
