I don't have the technical background to evaluate various centralized and decentralized proposals for a microblogging service, but I can (and have) comment on business issues, such as the common delays in communication when something goes wrong. But they are getting better; now the delays can be measured in hours, not days... - Ontario Emperor
If Twitter does not over come this pattern of outages... someone will... the faster the adoption the lower the outage bar... users will hop over and find greener pasture! - Nancy Babyak
Bump. Who's going to create their own Twitter? :) - Bwana McCall
I don't see why someone couldn't build a new "Twitter" -- but I'm willing to guess most people are scared of having a 2nd Twitter fail, who would want that on their resume. Plus there has to be some legal roadblocks as well - Shey
Wrong question. Of COURSE a better Twitter could be made. There already are better services. The question is: If I build it, will they come? You'd have to sway the userbase away from Twitter. People may make an exodus, but as people leave, the "old" Twitter will have better performance, which will cause many to just stick around and use it. It's much more complicated than having a "better" service. - Vince DeGeorge
That's it Vince. I believe this is why Molly Wood and company are pledging to actually *use* the winner of their contest. We all know how hard it is to build a community. I think just because something is built better, doesn't mean people will use it. So now that Twitter has the community, they have a great opportunity to completely re-write the architecture from the ground up. I believe this is a more feasible solution than building our own. - Bwana McCall
We could go work for Twitter and improve the code-base from the inside: http://twitter.com/help/jobs - Morton Fox
