Turns out that using gallons per 100 miles give people a much better idea how much gas a car uses. People value improvements linearly, but MPG is an inverse measure. - Clare Dibble

I read a similar post recently about the harmonic mean. To answer the question, how many Priuses (60 MPG) does it take to make up for 1 range rover (10 mpg), Using the arithmetic mean, you get an average fuel consumption of 35 mpg, which is wrong. You have to use the harmonic mean. It takes 6 priuses to compensate for one Range Rover. So much of our effort should be placed on the low end of the mpg spectrum - http://www.nerdblog.com/2008/0... - Robert Felty
Also true of P/E ratio, which much more sense if phrased as E/P (or Earnings Yield). - Paul Haahr
