@bdlangam From my perspective the #1 tip in this category is: Explore and define "best use" for yourself. PDF Download: Super Secret "How to Guide" for FriendFeed, prior to the real-time push. Who wants me to update this?
And if I take the time to update this for the current site, should the eBook be free? $2? $5? You tell me. - Louis Gray
you mean this is out of date already? - Lindy Asimus
It was out of date immediately. But if there is interest from the community and others, I can bring it up to date. (There are many pieces which still are valid, but FriendFeed innovates quickly) - Louis Gray
I do. On first glance, in its current form, it looks exactly like what could actually be the catalyst for me to actually use FriendFeed. Updated, would probably seal the deal.... Now I just need to find the time to read it thoroughly. Hmmm... - Joel Strellner
I notice a lot of people I know on Twitter and other networks not yet on Friendfeed. This is a very handy document. Update would be very good. - Lindy Asimus
Twitter is getting so popular in these day but i think most people dunno about the advantages of friendfeed. For me it's Twitter 2.0 and i think you would help a lot of users with it. I also believe in the power of free, even though i would definitely pay for it. Like Joel Strellner said, seal the deal and make more people understand friendfeed. - Sascha Pallenberg
FF is powerful, major adoption is yet to come! - Jonathan Fleming
Louis: looks like a really valuable FF guide, well worth a small fee (like an iphone app), say $1.99 - Geer
great piece of work Life's Good with Louis Gray - Thomas Power
This is great! I'll pay $5 for the updated version, but you might be able to sell twice as much copies by making it $2. - Masatake E. Hori
awesome ! - kazuhiko
Masatake E. Hori - Twice as many sales at $2, or half the sales at $5; I vote for half as many sales at $5, He'd make more money for less hassle. ;-) - Joel Strellner
50% price cut would probably result in a lot higher sales than twice as many. Check out Jeff Atwood's blog article about price points. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog... - "50% sale = 320% increase in sales" - travispuk
There is still going to be a certain portion of purchases from the current FF community, even if it is just to show support for this type of work and Louis. Same reason why FF'ers purchase FF t-shirts etc. - travispuk
thanks ! But 62 pages of how to just show that FF is not enough #easysimple - Jacopo Gio
Thanks, this helps. Just coming out of the sitting up stage, making some tentative attempts at crawling: As a new user, I would not have read this if I had been asked for hard payment. In the economy of social media don't you 'pay' with the wisdom-value of your comments and by allowing yourself to be a number on a friend-list? - Sally Relton Shakespeare
Think of an affiliate plan so that current users can make it available to those not using FF already? Some may be teaching social media to non-onliners. - Lindy Asimus
Louis - Great job. I'm a huge FF fan and still am finding some very cool tips on how to utilize it. Thanks! - John: @johnhaydon
I was going to ask when you were going to release this. :-) - Jesse Stay
Sounds cool. If your trying to get people to adopt and see how cool FF is then it should be free. - Dusty Edenfield from iPod
Well ... there goes another book I don't have to finish :) It's a start Louis and much needed. - Charlie Anzman
Wow, great stuff. I didn't know if its existence before. Rather than updating this all by yourself, wouldn't it be better to turn this into a community-maintained wiki? - Meryn Stol
What Greer said. - Josh Haley
Louis: its a very good source thanks. Do you think it makes sense to make this guide like a FriendFeed Wiki so anyone can contribute and changes adopted easily ? Or its not worth it ? - Jacque
Quick comments: I worked on this at the beginning of the year and would have issued it much earlier, had the planned site revamp not been coming. Part of the reason for its length is that I wanted to be comprehensive, I tend to write a lot, and I included tons of screenshots. Also - the intended audience is not necessarily us, but those who know of FriendFeed, but need a boost. - Louis Gray
Guidance I received while making this earlier this year was to not give it away for free, and I understand the opportunity for some premium content. As this is antiquated, there is no harm in having it out there for free, but I would make the next one very inexpensive so it gets in the most hands as possible. (Based on this response, I think you guys see value in revamping?) - Louis Gray
Jacque, if anybody else wants to start a how-to Wiki for FriendFeed, that's great, but I still think you need resource guides that are easily consumable. - Louis Gray
Louis, first off, I love the drewscancer shirt. Second I think you should update it. I wouldn't charge more than $5 but you could also ask for donations. Just an idea. Great book though. - Seth Goldstein
I would not buy it but I would download this one and read comments on the new one 8) - Ru Viljoen
Yes Louis we do need a much more detailed version even though this edition is excellent. If FF is Twitter 2.0 which I agree it is then few people (100k max worldwide) have even realised this yet. Linkedin and Facebook are fading away into general background noise like Yellow Pages. You know it's there but so what. - Thomas Power
Only half way through it and already found some very useful tips. - Silver Hage
DEFINITELY YES! I would buy it! I have been on FF awhile and I still am not using it productively - same with LazyFeed- I love both of them but forget them. I have a Seesmic Desktop App - can we talk Loic into adding FF to it? that way it is in my face! - Robyn Hawk
I now understand how to use the hide functionality better thx. - Ru Viljoen
I was wondering about this project, Louis :) I think there is value in updating it some and offering it at a very reasonable cost for those who plan a foray into FF - haven't seen much else out there in way of explaining the tool, etc. - Valeria Maltoni
Are you trying to prove Scoble's point? Why does FriendFeed need a 61 page manual?! :P - Tim Hoeck
This could be done in 6 pages. But it can be done better, with screenshots, in 60. - Louis Gray
Make sure Scoble is happy with the UI instructions. :) - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
I would pay $20 if profits went to #blamedrewscancer - Liza + = ?
Roberto, I am not too concerned about Scoble being frustrated today. He is making a point and FriendFeed has a good track record of listening. They have an interesting issue where their product has many different functionalities in a world when people are used to not having choices. - Louis Gray
Robert also knows that by complaining, it gives naysayers a good reason or excuse for why they are not here. It's not an issue with PR but picking your battles and stage. - Louis Gray
Fantastic. There are tons of hidden gems in Friendfeed that most people don't know about. If they did, they'd be hooked for life. I do like Meryn's suggestion to make a wiki type section like this. - Adam Reyher from Alert Thingy
Louis - why not a video - better than a PDF. - Liza + = ?
I wouldn't be able to pay but I support the update wholeheartedly. - Kisha from iPod
I was considering writing my own book, very complete & thorough, taking people from total newbie to power user, and including enough info that even current power users might get something from it. I had also planned on releasing it for free, CC-BY-NC-SA - April Russo
I'd prefer it in html. - Sue - Friendfeed is best
Louis - Think book (you read that right) targeting NEW users if you wish to profit from this (with free online updates as things change). Most people still won't pay for an e-book .... and there's still plenty of (smart) people roaming Borders, B&N etc (and the online book stores, not exclusive of Amazon). That was my target, just got real busy here with other stuff. - Charlie Anzman
Great work! I have sent a small payment via PayPal. Please inform when you are ready with the updated version and I will send you some more money. All the Best, Martin. - Martin Lindeskog

Global warming comes to Portland: Fwd: Temp = 106F, heat index = 108F, WTF meter = ZOMG: http://twitpic.com/byyz4 (via http://ff.im/5R5dn)
Reminds me of the good old days in Austin, TX. The question is, "Is it a DRY heat"? - RobinDotNet from iPhone
it's just hot. supposed to be a smidge hotter tomorrow. - greg hines
Yeah, 106 is dang hot. It's why I live in the SF Bay Area now instead of Austin. - RobinDotNet from iPhone
my son just called from Portland, heading to a wedding in a tux with 106 degrees..(6:30pm). I heard when I lived there that 1/3 of people don't have AC, yikes. - mark ivey
But this isn't Austin, Robin, it's Portland, Oregon! It's so wrong. And yes, no AC here as well, and they seem to be sold out all over town. Not supposed to really break for a week or so. - Tony Zito
Oh that's bad. Very bad. I was in Sonora once and it was 117. Everyone was in the one air-conditioned shop on the main street. - RobinDotNet from iPhone
Tony, you're right, it's especially brutal if you're not used to it. - RobinDotNet from iPhone
get real, not global warming, I remember that from the early 1980's. - xxx xxxxx
Definitely warm outside around here today. Rode my bike from the office to my car and got to enjoy the peak of it. - Jason
it's not Global Warming. here in Arkansas where its usually 106 this time of year, its 85. It's just El Nino - Stephen Pickering
Robert Scoble
All the hype in the world (why PR isn’t enough to build your business) - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
You are so right. I don't remember Facebook ever being the "cool" thing that celebs would talk about on talk shows, or weather reporters. It grew withtout all the attention twitter is getting these days. - Mark
I know a lot of people jumped onto Facebook because of Iraq. At the time, it was the fastest/easiest way to keep in touch with lots of people with the least amount of effort. With limited time on the internet, you can only send so much email. Facebook was a lot easier to digest and send out quick messages. - Shawn Kirsch
Let me get this question in here, too: where did you get the '30 million users' figure from? - Darren Barefoot
Twitter does not have a revenue model, so, by definition, it is not a business, yet! - Matt M Perez
"You couldn’t BUY this kind of hype with $50 million in your pocket. If you could, Microsoft would be buying regularly." Can I use this sentence in casual talks? =] I will say it belongs to you =] - Özgür D. Cyric
Studies have shown Facebook is popular with narcissists. Maybe twitter needs some more vanity features :D - Mark
Darren: I've seen that number a number of times around the Internet. I believe I saw it on TechCrunch, though. I have to look. - Robert Scoble
I'll back Scoble up on that, I've seen it in numerous places as well. - Shawn Kirsch
How many Facebook accounts have not been updated in any way in the last 6 weeks. I own 2 of them. - Gilbert Harding
Like your posting and the qualities that make FB more interesting to you wife...to those reasons (in general, not that I know what your wife thinks :), I'd also add that FB works because it's richly personal...twitter, not so much...either way, businesses and their hype-mongers often have a hard time with the personal thing. - jeff hammond
Gilbert: Zuckerberg tells me his numbers are people who have updated their accounts in past four weeks. So, if you haven't you shouldn't be included in the 250 million number. - Robert Scoble
Compete.com shows USA Facebook and Twitter numbers: http://siteanalytics.compete.com/twitter... it's showing 22.5 million for Twitter but I know that Twitter's international audience is very large. - Robert Scoble
Robert (and Shawn): Thanks. I wasn't really questioning the number, just trying to find an authoritative source for it. Of course, Robert qualifies as an authoritative source on his own, so that'll do. - Darren Barefoot
The leaked documents shows that people like us (active) are going to be worth $1 a year to them (twitter). - Mark
Mark: I think that's bull. I remember sitting next to ad buyers for Kraft Foods and they said they spend $40 to acquire new customers. So, people like us are worth at least that much, but probably a lot more. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Thanks, but I'm not a fan of Compete, QuantCast, Alexa, et al. Once I find some free time I hope to demonstrate that they're pretty fallible. For example, Compete suggests that FB had 122 million visitors last month, when the actual number is, as you say, probably twice that. - Darren Barefoot
Darren: right. I know. But it's good for a quick and dirty comparison. Again, Compete mostly shows USA numbers, and Facebook has a lot of users outside of USA. - Robert Scoble
Further to the Compete (et al) question, as few as half of all Twitter users use the web interface (http://bit.ly/1W4f4e), so that's going to skew the number again. - Darren Barefoot
Robert: Fair point on Facebook (there's also the question of visitors vs. users, given the popularity of FB pages et al). I just wish tech bloggers didn't lean on those stats sites as hard as they do. - Darren Barefoot
Mark/Robert: re: the value of a twitter user...using the recently posted $48million numbers, I did some math and a new user is, apparently, worth $16 in media spend. Keeping an existing one...$0.48. Check my math if you like here: http://bit.ly/CsmOV - jeff hammond
Darren: we lean on them because they are easy to link to, even if they are horribly inaccurate. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Exactly. - Darren Barefoot
lots of good points robert, but [facebook] "never got the kind of hype that Twitter is getting" - huh? facebook is one of the most hyped tech companies ever! - Deva Hazarika
Deva: sorry, when I turn on TV I don't hear about Facebook. I hear about Twitter. When I open USA Today or the Guardian, I don't hear about Facebook, I read about Twitter. When the local weatherbabe in VA is talking about Twitter, not Facebook, I think the world is pretty nutty! - Robert Scoble
Important - especially for start-ups like mine where we get a pretty good amount of press. Doesn't necessarily equate to traffic. - Barry
...i always argue, twitter is the best way to promote business via viralism video tools, when u use it as some automatized "hammer". Friendfeed is for private/public blogs. Facebook is for college- and "art/music" friends. You can also use it as some shelf. Of course, apolitical people will argue the other way round ; - ewing2001akaNicomedy2010
Interesting comparison--i also have family members who love FB but don't get Twitter. It's the personal features and more close connections. They feel like they're sharing with close friends and business associates vs broadcasting it to the world and anyone who wants to follow them on Twitter. The Twitter hype is interesting to watch--but when the masses pile in, watch out below (particularly since it lacks the "velcro" feature) - mark ivey
RIGHT NOW you hear about twitter more, sure, but think back over the past couple of years, when twitter was a tech-community thing only - back then facebook was THE company all over the magazines/TV/papers/etc - Deva Hazarika
Robert, absolutely right. I'll remember this the next time I'm trying to explain to a client why PR CAN'T help them fix core business issues. - David Bailey
@Scoble - well said. - Anthony Citrano
Just this weekend, the 15 yr old in my world announced that he despises FB. Why? Soooo many parent types on there, and no real chance to customize. You can install apps all day long, but these are cookie cutter additions to a page. Also, he can't stand the constant invites to this and that. Ah, that's my boy. I mostly hate FB, too, though it was fun for a little while. - Kathy Fitch
Robert Scoble
Craving intimacy in our social networks - http://scobleizer.com/2009...
not so much looking for a better way as much as better ways to use what's already there. FF is at present the app of choice, then Twitter. FB doesn't do much for me but it may be purely an issue of bias. - thinfilms
@Robert: do we need our own "private" FF/Twitter networks? or is there something else needed? - MikeAmundsen
I use Friendfeed and Twitter to find out what's going on in the BIG world. I use Facebook to know what's going on in MY world, friends of the past and present. There IS a difference. - Steve Hampton
Steve, you make a good point. Perhaps configuring one to interact with the other [big and small] in flexible, relevant ways is the key here. - thinfilms
Yeah, I guess it would be really great if I had one tool to handle both the big world and my world, it would be great, But there are times that I like the separation of the two. - Steve Hampton
@Robert: I find myself using Twitter less and less, FF only marginally, and have an FB account but do not use it. For intimate, more personal discussions, I find that niche social networks are best for me--networks that are created with a specific demographic in mind. I'm very involved with the development of BuddyPress (BP) and see some interesting niche social sites being created using BP. - Jeff Sayre
@Adam, BP is not about forums, although that is one component of the platform. With BP you create your own social networking site. It's obviously not for everyone, but it is more intimate than a one-size fits all approach like FF or FB. http://buddypress.org/ - Jeff Sayre
Steve: I've been working away in my mad scientist's lab for the past 6 months trying to solve that (and other) problems with these real-time stream and friend/frenemy-related issues. You never know, but I think that me and my partner (Lisa Padilla @lisapadilla) may have come up with a solution for your problem... it's called Grabbit, and we're on track with our development team at... more... - Fred Davis

Find Jeff Sayre comments interesting. Buddy Press could be something that people will explore and like as it is more intimate. - courtney benson
Robert - I agree although I'm not sure if any social network by nature can perfectly fit into the "biz" or "personal" pigeonhole. I personally use FB only for private sharing with "real" friends - my postings are completely closed to non-friends. I use FF, Twitter, Google Reader, LinkedIN as extensions of my "professional" life. This "firewall" between personal and professional helps me... more... - Jim Tierney
Robert, I use twitter and friendfeed, have FF but don't use it. Still in a research mode.Like FF for professional and ability to go beyond 140. Beginning to get pretty annoyed with the spammers on Twitter and I expect it will only get a lot worse - courtney benson
Jim: As these social network platforms evolve, new tools and functions become needed, and then those need to evolve, too. What is needed is further evolution of what I call Friend Management, which should ultimately do simple things like sort out personal from biz, and also more sophisticated things like reputation tracking, relationship tracking, etc. ... back in web 1.0 I was working... more... - Fred Davis
@Steve Hampton I like having that boundary too, though I use LiveJournal for the private part. - Zian Choy
One of the main reasons I'm on FF is the private groups. I've setup a private group with a couple of close friends and we use it very frequently. We were using Twitter with private users, but I prefer having the inline photos and video here. The problem with FaceBook is that although I really like my friends on there, I don't particularly want to socialize with that many people that frequently. - Chip Ramsey
@Steve Hampton: I agree completely, well said. - David Ziembicki
@Robert I'm convinced the biggest reason people use our site, totspot, is the very search for intimacy that you describe in this article. well put. - Michael Broukhim
I do not crave intimacy from my social networks, only honesty and transparency. That is why I like Facebook so much, because people are who they say they are. Twitter would do good to do more to copy Facebook in this respect. Twitter is at odds with itself because when you sign up for an account it encourages you to use your real picture and name, and then they show you the suggested... more... - Garin Kilpatrick
Robert, have you ever done research into the history of two way communication online and some of the robust communities -- including private ones, as well as ones people pay to be a part of that have been around for nearly ten years? How are you rewarding those people who link to your blog? Here's what I do:
Since the beginning of 2008, I have been bookmarking links to my blog on Delicious, tagged "coverage" - Louis Gray
You can see the thousands of links here: http://delicious.com/louismg... - Louis Gray
I add secondary tags for the subject, like "blogging", "friendfeed", "twitter", etc. - Louis Gray
The delicious bookmarks get shown on FriendFeed. - Louis Gray
Good idea - Bwana ☠
Now, I set up my settings so that every delicious bookmark I make goes to Twitter via FriendFeed. - Louis Gray
So if you are linking to me, not only will everyone here see it, but everyone on Twitter will see it. Guaranteed exposure. - Louis Gray
And in theory, it gives more exposure back to me by making it look like my blog has a higher rate of visibility. - Louis Gray
Love it Louis. I rt those who have linked to me: http://twitter.com/brianso... - Brian Solis
Very good idea..my delicious bookmarks all go to Facebook as well. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Great idea! - Craig Huffstetler
I like them in friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
briliant, thanks for sharing - anna sauce
Robert, I try to do the same, assuming they are here, but FriendFeed is not yet the superset. I also tend to share them in Google Reader when possible. - Louis Gray
Hmm Must add Friendfeed to my blog - Lindy Asimus
And we know the power of a Scoble "Like!" - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Plus sometimes you strike up conversations with the bloggers, freely sharing ideas and explaining. That impressed me way back when... - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
That's a fantastic idea. Think I'll start doing it. - Paul Balcerak
Yes, Mary. It always makes sense to make comments and engage with those discussing your content, if you have the time. - Louis Gray
Great idea Louis. You have become my social media constant, I have to hang on to you so I don't get LOST. - Matthew
new strategy: link to louis in every single blog post... muwahahahaha - andy brudtkuhl
I used to do this a lot but then he got me all caught up in this 'new adopter' stuff and I couldn't get anything done (Louis rocks :) - Charlie Anzman
I got the idea from Louis awhile back, but here's mine: http://del.icio.us/jessest... and for socialtoo: http://del.icio.us/jessest... - Jesse Stay
those that link to vertical slice I tend to thank, I'll even come to them and offer to involve them in the show production at times by offering to involve their articles or creations. Sadly there's only one guy that does post some episodes to his blog that I'm aware of. - alphaxion
Louis, what discovery tool do you use to find those linking to you? Google Alerts? - Rick Bucich
We reward those who give our comic what we call a "Mighty Link", with a nice link back under the comic... http://www.geekculture.com/joyofte... - Snaggy
PS - that question goes out to everyone else as well. I love the idea and use it to a degree but never in a systemic way. Do you think http://delicious.com is the ideal platform? - Rick Bucich
Mike Fruchter started the same: http://delicious.com/mfrucht... - Louis Gray
@Rick i prefer diigo... it allows you to build communities around the links - andy brudtkuhl
Rick, Google Alerts are okay (not perfect). Technorati actually still does a better job. - Louis Gray
Dang, I didn't even think of doing that, ok - off to go link love people. thanks! - Dan owns Comicsforge.com
But, i used to do the same thing back when i was a delicious user - http://delicious.com/48web... - andy brudtkuhl
I also have FriendFeed post my delicious saves over to Twitter to further the reward - Jesse Stay
Good to know, I'm a newb when it come to Technorati although i do have an account - Rick Bucich
Andy, if you do link to me in every post, you'll probably lose readers. I dare you to try. :) - Louis Gray
@Louis haha i doubt it .. everyone loves them some louis - andy brudtkuhl
Does Technorati work for websites not on a blog platform? We have both - Rick Bucich
Andy -- for example, should I bookmark this one? http://billolearysblog.blogspot.com/2009... Knowing that it will get redistributed, I'm less likely to. But I may comment there instead. - Louis Gray
I'm going to do the same - Was thinking linking tweets as well, but then that would be too much... - Bwana ☠
I love this! Way to rally the community! - Dan owns Comicsforge.com
A most valuable conversation thread indeed! - tony obregon
I like the "coverage" tag idea. Must incorporate into my blog routine. - Ms_Krista
Great Idea! Luis, how do you know who is linking to your Blog? I just linked to you ( http://bit.ly/4webways ) - frank barry
I got really excited when I noticed a link from louismg in delicious. I wondered why, as I don't write about anything social networking related. When I figured it out I started doing the same thing: _both_ sites which linked to me have some shiny delicious.com love from me. Heh. - DGentry
i make cupcakes for each link and mail them to each person - Allen Stern
I so never got my cupcakes! Maybe you should email 'em Allen ;-) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I'll link to them if I really like their blog, otherwise I stumble a post - Kate
I delicious people who write about FriendBinder: http://delicious.com/rythie... sometimes I Twitter about them too or Digg them. - Richard Cunningham

It's not too late Alfredo :D (or is it) - Bwana ☠
Yeah your tags are ... how do you say... scattered :( - Bwana ☠
aye, looks like you struck into the problem I did - you can't have multiple word tags unless you take out the space and bunch it into a single word. Not even quotes works - alphaxion
Great strategy Louis, I am going to start doing a similar thing at http://delicious.com/garinki... only I am going to tag the Blog with whatever category it belongs to instead of "coverage" - Garin Kilpatrick
Sounds like a plan to me! Will start implementing today! - Mike Paul
So that's why one of my posts got a tweet from Louis Gray! That puzzled me a lot. Only now that I remember that I've linked to Louis in that post. Sweet! Nice touch. ",) - jan geronimo

Citigroup has lost 98% of its value in the past 2 years - http://money.cnn.com/2009...
Citigroup has lost 98% of its value in the past 2 years
At its height, Citigroup stock traded around $57 a share. That was in late 2006, just months before subprime mortgages began to become problems and the credit market unraveled. But fears about Citigroup's exposure to soured mortgages and other consumer loans have sent shares plummeting this year, wiping out billions of dollars in shareholder value as a result. The bank reported losses of nearly $28 billion last year and investors remain worried that the bank will continue to lose money as the economy weakens. The stock lost more than half its value last month alone as speculation grew that the government would have to step in and effectively nationalize the company. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
...and most bubbles are just full of air... - .LAG liked that
so, should one buy Citi at that price? - .LAG liked that
Citi would be pretty speculative to buy at this price. - Thomas Hawk

Good God let the bitch begin. Last summer that amount of complaining about the re-design was ridiculous. People complained like there was not UX and planning involved. I think the site re-design was a huge improvement. I look forward to the new design as well. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy

Well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... - Jemm

So if FriendFeed is Apple, Facebook is turning into Taiwanese MSI.. ? http://bit.ly/mogsR - ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
I may reactivate activity on this new FB. But in that case I would do a pure reset of my friend list... Just like "some" did on twitter ;) Not that I have a huge list there, but not _the_ appropriate list - Jean-Charles VERDIE from twhirl
I hope they don't sacrifice the amount of information you can view above the fold for larger user pics. - James Simmons
You have to give facebook credit for iterating fast. I think that twitter and facebook should join forces and create a compelling alternative. - Edwin Khodabakchian
no it is getting provocative, really the future will prove it. but FB is playing a loose game - abdellah
it cost time money and resource to re-educated an audience, the large the audience the large the expenses, and FB audience is large how much it will cost to re-educate such audience to act like FF people do. - abdellah
Can't believe this - no originality. Complete rip. - James Hull
The complaints of "I don't understand Friendfeed" will have not weight if people use the new Facebook interface. - Andy Bakun
is this the silicon valley equivalent of waking up next to the severed head of your favorite horse? "we can steal your UI at any time, friendfeed. remember that." - Karim
That will work much better, although I'm getting used to ignoring the right hand column, I'll need to get used to ignoring the left hand column again. ;) - Daniel W. Crompton
Why so much hype around new FB page? Like you use it more than FRF ;) - Sasha Kovaliov
Sasha: this is a huge change. Not because of what you see, but because businesses and brands now are full members of the social graph. That will be an impact you'll feel over next two years. - Robert Scoble
well, full members if you fan or friend them. But you don't have to. And then they invade you less than they would on Twitter. - Prokofy Neva
Robert, agree. However, FB has to work hard these 2 years to make itself destination #1 on the web. I hardly go there - all important things just hit RSS or email. I wish RSS had more 2-way interaction. - Sasha Kovaliov
the FB move, is just an other move toward a more social service, some have to confess that in FB there is an equivalent of bull, even it is a social website, it is a set of million bull and those (family friend reduced set restraint) suffer from inter-bull interaction, this FB is to bring more interaction between people from different bull and this will be provided but the concept of fellower. and feed commenting like etc. is it risky!! yes - abdellah
how to argue that such feature can be a bad move for FB, just see the "group" evolution in FB. in FB people want one thing "be in a closed relation with their known relations", would people be open mind in FB and open their own bull to others bull!! this is all what future will tell. - abdellah
Sasha: That's why FriendFeed is so much better than Facebook. the ability for RSS to be embeded in your feed and be able to carry on a conversation about a storry in that RSS feed on FriendFeed is what makes FF so amazing. BUT, i don't know if i'd want everyone on FF to have the same access that friends on FB have access to about me. That's the problem. We need two sites for this unless someone can come up with way to make a profile partially private and available to only those you trust. That's key. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
@Slayerboy, do you think that's why we don't have this extensive profiles (read "no profiles") on FRF? - Sasha Kovaliov
@Sashe, yeah I think that's one of the reasons. I believe in openness and all that, but am not blind to the fact that a majority of people even have problems putting stuff on their facebook profile when they CAN set privacy settings. I think Facebook has a good idea with the whole Network thing, but there's no real communication there. If FF applied the network idea and let me specify who I want in my "Friends" and in my "Network", friends can access my profile, network can't, but we can all converse. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
.....it would make it much easier and we wouldn't need two sites for this. I think that's what FF does with Rooms, but again, privacy vs non-privacy is an issue for profiles. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
@Slayerboy I like the way Flickr does it - on adding a friend you mark them as a contact, friend or family. Cool idea that should be easy to implement and would save us from rooms and other stuff. - Sasha Kovaliov
@Sasha interesting, I use Picasa and just share the feed on FF. Never got into Flickr. Can't imagine it'd be hard to implement that on FF then. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Facebook now has Friendfeed! YATTAAA! :-) - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
It seems to me like only the social media experts would compare Friendfeed/Twitter with Facebook. The rest look at them as apples and oranges. They are used differently - Andre P. Siregar
Andre, what do you mean by social media experts? - abdellah
I think the term 'social media experts' is used in this context to indicate 'stupid dumb-ass charlatans'. Hope that clarifies. ;-) - David Petherick from twhirl
so, may be I am one of them :) David - abdellah
Thanks, David :-). Although I would put it less harshly. - Andre P. Siregar
are you sure?!! I am still waiting for your definition Andre. what is a social media expert? - abdellah
Abdellah, here's all I'm saying. There's been tons of serious discussions on Friendfeed/Twitter and Facebook, allegations and accusations that one copies the other, etc. etc. I don't understand why spend the energy. The majority of the 175mill Facebook users are there simply to connect with actual friends. Simple example: I respect Robert Scoble's opinion on new technology, but I don't care what he is doing at home tonight. But I do want to know what my sister is doing, 1000 miles away - Andre P. Siregar
Andre, I respect your opinion and how you use social service, now I was about the label of "social media expert" , I hope that you aren't about self claimed guru, that all. we are all expert and none is :) peace. - abdellah
The new Facebook Page layout makes it more difficult to highlight video content. Video is now relegated to tabs or below the immovable Fans box on the Wall page. Not great if video is a key part of your content strategy and you want to make it prominent. - Simon Taylor
I like the new setup as I updated my company's page yesterday. I approve FB! - Jeremy Campbell from twhirl
I'm not going back to Facebook - my mom's on it now:) - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Facebook is the Microsoft of 2009, mimicking FF, Twitter, slowly taking shape as THE communications platform for the masses. Big mistake turning FB Pages into a profile page, though, businesses lose any branding. Looks like a college kid designed it. - mark ivey

Boring May Be Profitable - http://www.louisgray.com/live...
Brilliant post! I couldn't agree more. Yes, consumer space is more glamorous but it's the enterprises who have the money. Working for a large enterprise, I am amazed how underserved this market is. Although, I am seeing a few emerging stars in this space and can't wait to check them out. - MiaD
Web 3.0 will have its dark horses and misadventures too, but the dark horses and misadventures of Web 2.0 will become the boring ones. - The Way Things Are
MiaD, thanks for the compliment. Enterprises are underserved until someone sees that they are willing to spend. Social software is barely making progress in the enterprise space because enterprises are conservative. They want good reasons to buy, stability and security. Typically, they want it installed within their firewall as well. - Rob Diana
Large enterprises do move slowly, but we're seeing them come around in several cases. It's a cumbersome process of fits and starts--we're working with two Fortune 100 co's now--but their hearts (and pocketbooks) are in the right place. What's encouraging is that, while they may be cutting back in so many areas, they're willing to invest in social media marketing. They (the marketing managers and senior mgn in some cases) see it as the future. Be interesting to see how it plays out. - mark ivey

Seth Godin's Blog: Personal branding in the age of Google - http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_b...
I won't hire anyone I can't find details in Google about. So, make sure you feed it good stuff about you. That's why I think it's necessary to blog now if you're looking for a job. But Seth's post reminds you to blog about what you want to do and make sure you think about the consequences. - Robert Scoble from Bookmarklet
"Everything you do now ends up in your permanent record. The best plan is to overload Google with a long tail of good stuff and to always act as if you're on Candid Camera, because you are." - V Mary Abraham
V Mary: at Microsoft we taught each other to always pretend that everything you said would get onto the front page of the New York Times. - Robert Scoble
Robert: We understand this, but how do we help teens eager for an FB page understand this? - V Mary Abraham
I agree, It's good to know what those people think you will be working with - Helge V. Keitel
V Mary: my son, who is 15, was talking to me about that last night. He said he doesn't put a lot of weird stuff on his facebook or myspace pages because he knows other kids will use it against him. His friends bug him about that too. - Robert Scoble
As a college student, I actually think a lot of "millennial" types monitor pretty closely what's on their social network pages. They may make poor decisions about which pictures are appropriate, but believe me, a lot of thought goes behind it. Just because there's Facebook, MySpace, and Google doesn't make drinking and drugs any less "cool" in college. - James O'Malley from twhirl
To bring this into real life, too, last night I was listening to two guys who were griping about being laid off. Both had weird punk haircuts. Both had bad attitudes. Neither were talking about creating something that would get them noticed in the global marketplace, just that they had been screwed by the system. They might have had a point, but it wasn't going to get their jobs back. Get a haircut that tells other people that they are professional and upstanding. Then go volunteer time somewhere. Geesh. - Robert Scoble
i've preached this to my teens constantly, what you do online lasts forever and even if you think it's in a closed network like fb that only you're friends can see it doesn't matter, it will surface - the frontpage of ny times is being replaced by search filters and bots - i'd rather see folks own their brands via ownership of their profile(s) and a domain that's theirs that maintains pointers to everything they want to publish/share about themselves and their interests - mike "glemak" dunn
In the long run, all stupidity on Facebook (and like places) will be forgiven... There'll be so much dirt on everyone that nobody cares anymore. Private live doesn't say much about one's professional performance. It's just that everyone wants to pretend that they're very well behaved everywhere.... This masquerade will slowly disappear. - Meryn Stol
"Get a haircut that tells other people that they are professional and upstanding. Then go volunteer time somewhere." Indeed. It's so sad to see people with a victim-attitude. - Meryn Stol
"The best plan is to overload Google with a long tail of good stuff " I like that bit. - Meryn Stol
+1 Meryn! Stop being so buttoned up and just have fun! - Brad Williamson
There is no such thing as privacy anymore. Everything is public and saved for ever. It is harder and harder to control your personal brand. Bruce Schneier wrote an interesting article yesterday. http://tinyurl.com/c74rxa Here is a short quote : "Welcome to the future, where everything about you is saved. A future where your actions are recorded, your movements are tracked, and your... more... - Tapio Kulmala
I'd like to clarify that I think that one's personal life doesn't matter, *as long as* someone displays a good professional attitude. Hopefully this shows from your Google search, or similar. - Meryn Stol
If someone's haircut is how you judge them, I believe that can be adequately described as superficial. Who decides what a "professional hair cut" is? I don't think a haircut has anything to do with a victim attitude. - coldbrew
"a haircut has anything to do a victim attitude". Objectively, you're right, Coldbrew, but if your potential employers truly dislikes your haircut, it decreases your chances of being hired. Doing everything you can to adapt to the environment if you're in trouble is the only right strategy. Otherwise, you're just blaming the environment, which won't bring you any further. If you're in an environment where people don't care about your haircut, all the better for you. :) - Meryn Stol
Robert, it sounds like your son has his head on straight. My impression is that is quite rare among teens who often seem to feel that they are exceptional (invincible?) and just won't get caught. - V Mary Abraham
coldbrew: Malcom Gladwell and others teach us that job decisions are made in the first 30 seconds. So, having a professional looking attire may make the difference. It sure does with me. I don't want to work with people who look unprofessional. Yesterday I visited Cisco. I noticed that the guy who met me was wearing a suit and tie. He sure isn't going to hire you if you wear a ratty t-shirt, have tatoos showing, and have a punk haircut. - Robert Scoble
Thankfully, in Boulder, it is seen as odd to wear a tie. It is exactly this type of attitude that makes me appreciate co-founding my own organization where we set the values, and they have nothing to do with appearance (ok, maybe the sales person's appearance is linked to performance). - coldbrew
I worked for a CEO once that wouldn't hire people that were overweight because he believed it demonstrated a lack of self-respect. Obviously, we had to part ways :) - coldbrew
Coldbrew, I like your "tolerance", but accepting others "intolerance" is part of life. That is, if you're on the needy side. - Meryn Stol
coldbrew: exactly. But I bet you have your own little biases on hiring. I know I have mine. Of course I still hired Rocky, who rides a Harley, has tatoos, etc. So there. :-) Funny enough, though, he was sort of forced on me at Podtech and we found that we got along after a while. - Robert Scoble
It didn't matter, he was judging by appearance like Scoble is suggesting is ok. - coldbrew
Ok, Scoble, I should have guessed these were mere guidelines, but I'd rather encourage people to base their decisions on things like productivity, insight, creativity, etc. - coldbrew
coldbrew: I'm not sure I quite got to the point where I condoned it, just explained it happens all the time. This is why you wear decent clothes to interviews. Me? I look at what you do online. Your online reputation is important to me if I'm going to hire you. - Robert Scoble
Colbrew, I'm not sure he's suggesting that. - Meryn Stol
Yeah, when you are hiring for the PR industry,I suppose image is important. - coldbrew
coldbrew: research shows that people don't actually hire on anything but the first 30 seconds impression. The rest of it is justification. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, I take it this is all hypothetical, meant as advice, since Rocky was laid off. I assume you aren't *actually* hiring... or are you? And another question... I have many other interests besides programming, and I do not own the I.P. developed on someone else's dime, thus cannot blog about it. Since my blog to date is "me minus programming," and there is a glut of good blogs about programming, I'm not sure this advice applies. Does my public LinkedIn profile solve this dilemma? Thanks in advance.... - Richard Walker
Richard: some day I will be in position to hire once again. Some day. :-) - Robert Scoble
Richard: I'd rather you be able to point to a blog where you have demos, samples, and other examples of what kind of programming turns you on. That demonstrates to me that you actually know what you're talking about, rather than LinkedIn, which just is a resume. - Robert Scoble
"That demonstrates...", aka "Show, don't tell." :) - Meryn Stol
I have done that for several years. Now its quite more relevant because of all the social info, but even 4-5 years ago you were able in some cases to find a small crumb trail. - RicardoSilva
Where are those days where you could just lie about who you are to get a job ? :) update: [/sarcasm] (Just in case anyone misses it) - Shivanand Velmurugan
Erwin: the problem is that if you advertise a job right now you'll get hundreds, or thousands, of responses. So you MUST filter them down to, say, 10, to have any chance of getting any work done. That's why the Internet is such an important part of your career plan. You won't get past the filtering stage if you don't work on that. - Robert Scoble
Thanks Robert, I could at least go through all my programming-related items and feed them to tumblr... - Richard Walker
@robert, you'd miss out on alot of prospects from entertainment biz, then. a lot of the industry doesn't want people to find them - it's more word of mouth, intros, relationships, etc. - Patricia
@Shivanand doesn't scan - needs rewording and/or punctuation ? - Richard Walker
Not disagreeing with you about first impressions counting, but I was hiring in late 2002 - early 2003 - when there were also far more candidates than jobs, and there were a huge number of candidates who wore 'professional' clothes and had 'professional' resumes, but no talent at all. Most of the people who were worth hiring stood out in some way. Not nose-rings and tattoos, but at least some amount of individuality, implying a level of confidence in their ability to perform rather than just conform. - Robin Barooah
It all depends on the character of the company and the nature of the position. Personally, I wouldn't want to be associated with any organization that judged people so superficially based on tattoos, piercings, hair color or style. If I was a client and walked into an office with little variation in attire and personal grooming, I'd run away scared and really wonder about how such an atmosphere could foster much creativity. - Tinfoil 2.0
We've surfaced thousands of people and brands using social media for branding. see http://media.tEarn.com/ Old media guys have terrible brands. New media has been very aggressive. - DJ Chang
These factors should be evaluated in context. I might not hire a starving artist in a long-term full-time position but to clean my house every week or two? Why not? Otherwise that smacks of the sort of elitism that gives elitism a bad name. - Kyle Maxwell
Observing this trend of googleing everybody is part of the reason why I started http://www.extendr.com. Among the many reasons it fits in this conversation is at least that most of us don't have the time or expertise to game Google to get the results we want. I'm a very open person; I post about many topics most people would consider private or controversial (or both) and often very publicly. I always do so knowing that I am posting ONLINE and that anyone could potentially see my comments. Any lesser awareness is either naiveté or stupidity. Be bold (and accept the consequences) or be private. - fn (fairnymph)

TV crews are hovering around the San Francisco Chronicle's newspaper headquarters. Its owner announced today that major cuts are needed in expenses and they are looking for a buyer and threatening to shut down both it and sister paper Seattle PI. - Robert Scoble
Would certainly be one of the first major newspaper deaths, but not the last. - Dean Clark
Already read something about that newspaper, wasn't that called a couple of months ago as the death of paper newspapers? Finally it gets to them... - Zu from AOD
So Sad. - Michelle Trent
The papers have to find a new model. They need some creative people with even more creative solutions to mix the want for free news and cost of providing that news. - Jonathan Callahan
I wouldn't want to buy the newspaper, but the domain name would be worth something. - Scott Loganbill
Looking for a buyer, eh? I wish they could keep their independence. Media consolidation isn't good for our democracy. - Bruce Lewis
I don't think this is sad. It's progress. How many of these industries fail to see the writing on the wall: Music, Movies, Newspaper, Real Estate, Ticketing? If your product can be digitized, and was built during much simpler times, prepare yourselves. Unfortunately, often large Co. executives have little incentive to do anything other than hang on. - coldbrew
The problem with Newspapers isn't that the owners are all highly leveraged because the ran around buying up every paper in sight. The aren't in a cash position to deal with a downturn or a major revamp of the business model. I wonder if newspapers being non profits are a way to go. Many papers from what I've seen were fairly recently turning a profit, just not a BIG enought one for investors who see the papers as simply another block in thier portfolio. - Leroy Clark
I won't miss them. - nick from twhirl
Dinosaur media is over with. - Spencer
-spending -trash +trees = FTW - Mike Shea
It cracks me up to see geeks doing superior dances on the graves of failed newspapers, when the same advertising depression is affecting online media too. It's like people on the poop deck of the Titanic saying that only the bow is under water, and in fact, they themselves are rising! When the economy turns around the newspapers will recover, as will online revenue. - Joe Knapp
Knapp, The Rocky Mountain News is publishing their last paper today, so they cannot recover; it is over (after almost 150 years). It "cracks me up" to see someone claim that a product that uses digital distribution will be in the same boat as a product reliant on physical production and distribution. That simply is not the case. Seattle PI and SF Chronicle are probably next. - coldbrew
I read this really good article about how USA Today has changed their format to more of microblogging one: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/usatoda... - Shevonne
Maybe these newspapers should think of themselves as brands and not aggregators? What if all newspapers followed the Scoble model of publishing? He publishes well written, timely information, without the need for editorial review, but its all "branded" under the trusted Fast Company brand. Certainly seems like a much more inexpensive and agile environment to operate in. Also, it doesn't require a large ad spend to maintain a building full of OH and capital costs just to deliver the content. My $0.02. - Robert Edwards
Ours died yesterday (and of the 2 that managed to survive the entire 20th century, the Rocky should've stayed and the Post died) http://www.reuters.com/article... and I won't be surprised if yours dies today. Sadly, I think we'll actually miss them more after they're gone... but then, I like pre-television radio shows as well. - Lucretia Pruitt
there's a lot of people who still read papers - a lot of people who dont get the tech world. what i see is more privisation of the media/newspaper world being bought out by the murdochs and the packers etc - Terry O'Fee
im fully for the digital media but theres lots of people who still like the newspaper. when my father is here in town he downloads the local broken hill paper and prints it because he likes reading it as he's used to - he's only 50 and "gets" the tech industry (its a job for us) but for him reading a paper means reading it on paper, its not going away any time soon.. - Terry O'Fee
Terry: Agreed, on the certain volumes of info needing to be printed. I'm only 38, but if the article runs more than a few pages, it gets printed. The more I think about it, maybe the newspaper's real problem is the fact they own so much of the distribution chain. Much like the problem with broadcast TV owning stations, programming, etc. The current delivery and distro models are too expensive. - Robert Edwards
Terry -- I disagree: I think the entire newspaper industry is going to collapse quite soon. Its financial viability bears little connection to your father's reading habits. - Sean McBride
My parents still read the newspaper in print as well (despite having a fast internet connection). Edwards is right, newspapers are too vertically integrated owning the means of production and distribution, not to mention the ad sales teams. - coldbrew
if you think the newspaper is going to die you're very naive. there's lots of people in the world that still watch the television and read the paper for news. the newspaper will be here for a while, im just saying the small independant companies are going to be bought by the majors. look at your family, i mean older family. not all of them are net savvy. if they are, they're the exception - Terry O'Fee
As a librarian, I often talk about media in my presentations. When we review different types of print media (journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.), I keep waiting for the day when I have to define what a newspaper is to the students. Ten years maybe. - Kenley Neufeld
Terry -- are you paying any attention to the financial health of "the majors"? To the fortunes of Sam Zell, Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and other newspaper moguls? They are in deep trouble as we speak. Don't confuse sentimental attachment to a particular physical format with the financial viability of an industry. - Sean McBride
i dont give a flying (*&(* myself, i never buy a newspaper myself, but its going to be another generation before we see the death of the newspaper. do you really think in ten years time everything is going to be online? seriously... - Terry O'Fee
I stuck two unrelated comments together, oops. Re: Older people still prefer the physical paper they've known. These older people will continue to pass away leaving less of them to demand a print version. - coldbrew
Terry: how do you interpret the latest financials on Zell, Sulzberger and other major newspaper owners? - Sean McBride
it will eventually happen, i agree. but not for a while. the rich will get richer and buy the suffering. - Terry O'Fee
i dont know, considering i live in australia. there's more to the world than the US... i know that news corp seem to be going borg on everything here.. - Terry O'Fee
Classified ads have taken a serious hit over the years as Craigs List has grown quite popular. That was a good revenue source for newspaper organizations. - coldbrew
Artificially creating a need for the physical paper by selecting certain pieces of content for print-only is shortsighted. - coldbrew
and then there's fairfax as well.. but hey. i'd like to agree on your transmetropolitan news society myself. i just dont see it happening soon, if they crashed we'd really be in a a spot of bother and there would be more to worry about then the print media, it would be everyone - Terry O'Fee
Print is just too expensive, and eventually the numbers of people reading will not satisfy ad buyers. Newspapers will then increase the cost of a newspaper, and those 'digital hold-outs' will rethink buying a newspaper at 2-5x the current cost. - coldbrew
Maybe they are right and all newspapers will be gone in 10 years. I know that the NYT would love to unload the Boston Globe and I have no idea what is holding the Boston Hearld up. - John Flynn
My gut feeling is always that if there is enough need for something, it will never entirely die. Newspapers may go out of style in a big way, many of the larger papers may morph into something else, but there are still times and places where newspapers are the best and most convenient choice - rural areas for instance where internet and cell phones are not abundant... or those markets... more... - Wendy Peters from twhirl
Interesting how cavalier everyone is being about the death of a major paper. Today it's the Rocky Mountain News, tomorrow it will be yours. When a paper - or an industry - collapses it's not just your history you're losing (150 years of newspaper archives,) it's hundreds of jobs. From the editors to the writers, to the photographers, cartoonists, printers, retired people doing... more... - Fortunalee from twhirl
Coulda said many of the same things about the wagon wheel business 100 years ago, Fortunalee. Some "industries" will not survive the digital age, and the ink-on-dead-tree industry is one of them. This has been obvious for a good 5-10 years, and I trust many of the affected people you mention have planned accordingly. - Anthony Citrano
I don't think anyone is being cavalier about the death of the newspapers. Most of *us* are simply pointing out that the industry failed to recognize how real-time digital distribution would impact their industry, and change accordingly. - coldbrew
Anthony, while the wagon wheels certainly carried us farther from the shores of the original colonies, they didn't chronicle who and what we are. And face it - they were awfully hard to fit in your pocket. ;) Everyone here is so "tuned in" to the electronic world, that they seem to dismiss the fact that an enormous portion of the population isn't. What happens when not just one paper in... more... - Fortunalee from twhirl
that's what im trying to say. i love the digital realm and media but i think a lot of people think it's going to take over the world. not yet.. - Terry O'Fee
Coldbrew: 100% agree. Fortunalee: your starting to cross over into a new topic, not off topic, but a new topic that concerns me greatly. And that is the destruction of our historical record. For all the geeks on FF, most of us could not easily read a data storage device from 15 years ago, but we can read a 15 year old newspaper! A separate thread on access to current and historical info should probably be started. Great comments. - Robert Edwards
O'Fee: digital media have already taken over the world, massively; the tipping point was reached years ago. Where have you been? - Sean McBride
Regarding archives: consider: many duplicates of digital documents exist on personal, corporate and institutional hard drives all over the world. If anything, this informal archival system is more secure than traditional paper archives. - Sean McBride
Newspapers are dying. The only thing that will save them is if they get progressive and more up to date soon. Staying old school does not help them at all - Rob Cairns
Anybody get Jason Calcanis' latest email "What to do if your startup is about fail"? He says, "A lot of CEOs with less than 12 months of capital left have been asking me for advice about what to do, given the massive economic turmoil we're facing." Yes. It's called a depression, affecting everybody. See http://www.techcrunch.com/tag... to dance on the grave of "new media." - Joe Knapp

Twitter and, now, FriendFeed are becoming the gateway to news items whereby friends and acquaintances are providing the filtering. Much like Digg, there are early signs of of "gaming", though these service provide the tools to users to compensate for that practice without relying solely on algorithms. - coldbrew
FriendFeed rocks the casbah. - Thomas Hawk
No way. No one uses friend feed. I can't see it starting any conversations at all. (doh!) - Jason Green from twhirl
FF is nice, but I just can't get over how much I dislike the web UI. Can anyone recommend an AIR or Mac desktop client? - Bryan Bartow from twhirl
How about Twhirl? You are using it already :) - coldbrew
It's the most comprehensive real time facilitator of collective intelligence I've seen so far. According to Don Tapscott (Wikinomics) in order for this concept to happen 4 principals need to exist: openness, peering, sharing, & acting globally. FF has all of these but perhaps most importantly, as Brian mentions, the quality of that collective comes from the influential thought leaders avidly using the platform. For these reasons and many more I'm a huge fan. - Mike Elliott
@brian solis: I found this comment on your post interesting: "Most important is FriendFeed's ability to port your Facebook status into your stream". How comes you think that importing facebook status into the stream is "most important"? - Davide D'Incau
YES, Friendfeed is the NEXT big thing in online conversation!! Friendfeed is a great app where we can track conversations with a mature UI that threads conversations, provides lists, rooms and other cool organizational features - Susan Beebe

YES!!! I have been trying to nudge people this way but they seem so wed to Twtter, which I see as way inferior but more populated. - Martha
Interesting Adam. The "conversation" is fragmented, but certainly requires attention where it amasses - all depended on the source, topic and keyword. If Scoble asked the question, I'm pretty sure FF would have been the hub for everything :) - Brian Solis

FriendFeed crawls Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube so you don't have to. - By Paul Boutin - Slate Magazine
"My friends are spread across dozens of different sites—Picasa, Pownce, Plurk, Pandora, Polyvore—and that's just the Ps. Most of them publish to two or three sites at minimum. Figuring out how to navigate each site is more work than I have time for. My fellow tech pundit Robert Scoble posts movies, photos, and text to more than a dozen sites. Can't I just get one page that lists everything Scoble did today? I can!" - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
This is a good article, overall. For the first time I really am "getting" friendfeed and understand why folks are drawn to a place like Facebook. The updates are so much easier to track here than going places and then if I want to go somewhere else I can. My question as an educator is will this too be blocked by our filter? Or can I show other teachers how this might be a great learning tool for students? - Sean Sharp

I'm going to have to look into this FriendFeed thing. - stretta from twhirl
For this kind of passive consumption of your friends' content, I think SocialThing is the better service. It automatically collects your pals' latest updates without having to recreate each person's individual feeds as an "imaginary friend." SocialThing addresses the hard truth: your friends aren't on FriendFeed. - mrshl
@mrshl Given my circle of friends, most of them are on friendfeed. YMMV - EricaJoy
now likely they will run it over and run it, but in keeping hope alive Erica I frankly open that there is an opening up of FF. As a non-tech person it can be a challenge to find discussions NOT RELATED to tech. Part of the reasons i post the things I do from my FF is in hopes of drawing others out to talk about something aside from the fact twitter is down or what I like to call "the meat which shall not be named". speaking of that: it is a BAD example of non-tech talk...LOL. - R. Ferguson
SocialThing is pretty cool too -- it really speaks to a totally different need. Incidentally, I've never seen a single Polyvore link on here. Does anyone actually use it? - Nathan Rein
@erica definitely agree. i have a few pals on friendfeed, as well. but most of my friends are relative non-techies who nevertheless use flickr and facebook, or even twitter and del.icio.us. they tend to post about their lives, not social media tools. as much as i dig FF, socialthing lets me keep up with the lion's share of my pals. - mrshl

I'm finding myself over at Friendfeed more and more. Too bad there's no FF-> Twitter reposting interface. Is there?
David, it seems to me that FF should implement the bridge betw their service and others. It's in their interest, it seems to me. - Dave Winer
well, you can respond to tweets when making a comment on a tweet in friendfeed. not sure if that's what you're asking, tho. - edythe
Other than replies to Twitter posts -- no way to originate Twitter posts on FF but obviously FF knows how to do it - Brian Sullivan

APIs are key. Would be cool if the FF people implemented FF->Twitter reposting though - would make it a guilt-free switch. - David Sifry
Everyone wants to control the consumption or the production end of things, a great model would be one that just does all the linkages, allows what you want to create and where you want to create it, to be consumed wherever you may want that to be. The FriendFeed virtual concept is a pioneer in that, but only for the consumer side. I see oppty here. - Jeff McNeill

I've been thinking this more and more lately. What is missing is the hackers and people who make stuff. In the early 1990s they were the most visible in the blogosphere. Then TechCrunch, TechMeme, and Valleywag showed up and they've been marginalized. We want "entertainment" now, and no one is asking for "smarter conversations." - Robert Scoble
@Robert: That could be a commentary on our culture as a whole and not just about the Internet. - AJ Kohn
@Robert, so true. There are people out there making things, but they don't get nearly as much attention as those that create publicity around no-real-life-value stuff. But the technology can be used to get smart people together if needed. There is enough potential, but we have to unleash it. Cradle to Cradle, for example, is really taking off in Holland. But only because the founders are creating a lot of noise around it. It is a framework that others should start using as well. But it needs more attention - Alexander van Elsas
Alexander: in the World Wide High School a fight in the quad gets more attention than the geek in the science lab. Me? I'd rather create content for the geeks who care about what's going on in the science lab, even if it gets me derided as "boring." - Robert Scoble
Robert: I guess that's the TV-ization of the internet. Look at the "unscripted" shows like Big Brother, etc. They might have been remotely interesting from an experiment point of view when they came up, but nowadays they are everywhere and boring. Interesting shows on TV (or the internet) aren't that easy to find today. - Holger Eilhard
Some people want smarter conversations and the Internet makes this abundantly more possible than it was before the Internet. Let's look at this problem differently. How can we use social media to encourage people to be more...curious about stuff? Can it be done? - Robert Seidman
I don't think it matters that a lot of people are distracted. Revolutionary change can and often does come about in a petri dish. I am a producer. I make stuff. It is my experience everybody wants to or wishes they could make stuff. Interactive is the future,we all get that here. Take an hour today and try to knit, or pull some weeds or plant some basil, just for the experience. Doing is more fun when it balances basking. It is about practice. - Mary Anne Davis
hey alexander, thanks for the kind words. robert, i agree about hacking - in fact, you guys might want to read my "hacking the industrial economy" post from a couple of weeks ago...if we make things more hacktastic, i think the culture problem goes away (maybe :) - umair
