You always see the terms inept and disgruntled, but we rarely use ept and gruntled. Perhaps I should make a tshirt that says "Ept and Gruntled". What kind of graphic would be appropriate for that? I'm thinking an alpaca.

I love the Online Etymology Dictionary. Oddly enough, 'dis-' in 'disgruntled' isn't the usual negation, but provides emphasis. http://www.etymonline.com/index... So 'disgruntled' is even more gruntled than 'gruntled'. 'Inept' is derived from Latin 'ineptus' which can be parsed as 'in-' + 'aptus', so the opposite of 'inept' would be 'apt'. http://www.etymonline.com/index...

I think the words "ept" and "gruntled" would be well-represented by the image of a goat. A goat is ept, rarely putting a foot wrong on the sheerest of rock faces, and seems particularly gruntled while its life lacks surprises and predatory threats.

I can't help but be a little sad when I read about all these new products that do a small part of what Grazr used to do. We were too early, and totally dropped the ball on selling the features.

Three years ago when we said the feeds were "always up to date" (the term real time hadn't been coined yet) everyone just stared at us dumbly. Even after demo'ing it people didn't seem to get it.

Yeah. The other sin we committed, we were too ambitious. Grazr did too much (it's been completely nerfed now). Real time feed parsing, merging, processing, a full hosted scripting environment with a template language, an online outliner + subscription manager (with neat drag and drop features) and most people just knew the widget. Made the product completely schizophrenic. Oh well, onward and upward. :)

Caroline and I are going to have to cancel. we got a puppy last night and just got back from the vet a couple of hours ago. The puppy is sick and requires all kinds of meds every two hours. Justice was served when the guitarist was arrested (for not having California ID) and his friend for “interfering” (i.e. asking a question.) Awesome community relations I just witnessed.

I can just see it now, "so what you in for?... Stairway to heaven". If the confrontation was based on a specific complaint I can see the need for the"informing" the offender of the law. To me it's just another reminder of the "police state" that we as Americans are living in. Another American incarcerated. Great.

@Thomas - I tried to elucidate above .. since he is a performer, and in one of the little blocks on OFW, using an amp, etc. - he is required to "shut down" at sunset. It was definitely after sunset. As I was passing by, he was starting up ‘Highway to Heaven’ and it was sounding quite sweet (and not very loud, BTW) and so a few of us had stopped/gathered around. The cop truck pulled up....

He had a valid passport? This story makes me sad. A ticket for breaking the entertainment curfew seems reasonable... Arrest does not. Unless of course he was a re-occuring offender and perhaps a criminal history. Perhaps the police knew something about his record that wasn't readily obvious? (Or so I am hoping.)

Complaining for some is their normal interaction with the world. When we all started using social media tools, we were all aggravating to a degree. Need to lay off the newbies a bit, unless they are going down the path of relentless marketing and get rich quick posts, then it is smackdown time! ;-)

I'm passionate about new users as the services needs them to grow and feel that FF doesn't support them very well, e.g. no proper tutorial upon completing registration and the issue with the suggested users list. And yes, I've run into people who make me want to bash my head in with a ball peen hammer in the process (both new and old), but I handle them the same way I do in real life: polite interactions only when necessary.

Darren, my first month on FF was no fun at all. I followed maybe 30 people, no one was following me, and I got my main feed in my feed reader. The result? No interaction on the items I posted, I didn't interact on items other people posted, and the posts that DID get interaction drove me nuts by reappearing all the time in my feed reader. Once I threw my hands up and decided to just hang out here and have fun with it, my experience completely changed..

It definitely takes time to understand how Friendfeed works. I was lucky when I joined in that a few people subscribed right away, so I got to see some interaction in progress from the start. Even so it took a few weeks to really learn the system.

I think starting on FF can be hard, people don't follow you automatically when you follow them as many do on Twitter, if you don't have a decent feed no one subscribes to you but it is unlikely you will have the motivation to have a decent feed with no audience. On Twitter you will be followed mostly by bots and people that will never read your tweets but your followers count increases...

I think a new user tutorial should include an live interactive post and comment part at the end, with something generic like "Hi just joined FriendFeed" in the title. Then us old users could choose to have a saved search that seeks out these posts and welcomes the new user?

I don't know, Kol, that almost seems kind of forced. With the system as it is now, I as a new user would probably find good people to follow by search. If there's an interactive signup tutorial, perhaps it'd be worthwhile to have a part where you enter three words or phrases that you're interested in. Me, I'd pick 'hilarious', science, and a specific turn of phrase. Use those words and setup custom searches in the tutorial, and you have a ready-made list of people with interests similar to your own.

SOME early adopters get BIG on a site when its just early adopters there... then Mainstreamers get involved... and they wanna see kitties and boobs and not talk about bandwidth and apps and unique visitors! You have a point, Cody, but I really do think FF offers features that can prevent that. 1) Only subscribe to people when you want to see the MAJORITY their content. 2) Hide imported services you don't want to see. 3) Use saved searches to find content of interest to you based on keywords rather than poster. I barely post anywhere now but often wish I had something more flexible than FriendFeed but without all of the hassle and overhead of running a WordPress blog. One thing. Posterous converts all embedded media links into internal references, so you will NOT be able to get your content off their servers if anything ever goes wrong. Go into the source view of one your posts on Posterous which includes a YouTube video or whatever, and you'll see what I mean.

And another thing, you want control over your brand? Posterous doesn't allow much in the way of customization of the blog design. Last time I used it, every blog on their system looked exactly the same. Way to stand out from the crowd. Wanna adjust the behaviour of the blog by adding plugins? No can do. I like the idea, but if the only reason you're doing it is for the auto-posting by e-mail, then there's loads of ways of doing that without losing control over your content.

Jesse and Andy - As I understand it, content you create is yours. But Steve would be relying on Posterous to display that content. A couple of backup strategies come to mind. It's there in your email, nicely backed up. You could autopost that content to Tumblr or, say, a Wordpress.com blog, where it will be there as a live backup. Comments, though, are for now stuck on Posterous, and it would require screen scraping to retrieve them. I don't know if/when the Posterous guys intend to make them exportable.

Sasha, normally when July 4th falls on a weekend it is observed on the closest weekday, but this year seems to be a bit different. The Federal Reserve isn't observing it on Friday, which means banks aren't closing this year.

Most companies large enough to have an HR department do pay time and a half to hourly employees that work on holidays. When I was a CSR I would work almost every holiday b/c you got 1.5 your rate PLUS the holiday pay. Since I'm salary now, that would no longer apply (though I would probably get a comp day in trade for working a holiday if I did).

Heh heh. It’s nice to see the NY Times *finally* come out advocating a moral position that intellectual property theft is alright as long as you don’t get caught. Zajawinski gets beat up pretty hard in the comments section of her post from a bunch of photographers who think she is stealing their work. Typical cry babies. Do I personally have a problem with what Zajawinski’s advocating here? No way. I think it’s great. And I guarantee you that most of the photographers crying about “image theft,” in the comments section of the post have all illegally copied music themselves. That’s the hypocrisy with too many photographers these days. I used to have a friend who was constantly pulling down tracks off of Hype Machine and saving them for their own use (and resending them to me) and then bitching all the time about people stealing images. It’s like it’s ok to rip off music, but God forbid someone dare download my precious photograph that I took of a seal last month — even though in both cases the material is being used purely for personal use.

For what it's worth, I used to use Gnutella (KaZaA/FastTrack prior to that even), various forums and MP3 link dumps and BitTorrent pretty much exclusively, until moving over to last.fm and YouTube, since the quality and selection was degenerating over time pretty quickly (partly thanks to empty legal threats against various sites and users of P2P services, fewer people hosting nodes/content, and fake file injection spam).
