FFing Enigma
You always see the terms inept and disgruntled, but we rarely use ept and gruntled. Perhaps I should make a tshirt that says "Ept and Gruntled". What kind of graphic would be appropriate for that? I'm thinking an alpaca.
"Unbeknownst to them, but beknownst to us..." -Spaceballs - Tinfoil 2.0
I am sure I will be Grundled with anything you come up with, you are very ept at this kind of thing. - John D Reasor
I just used ept in Tad's thread. Is it even a word? - Vicarbott
"Now behave!" "I am being have!" - me - caj needs a haircut
I am usually sheveled, but my house is rarely sheveled. It usually only happens when I perse my clutter into a pile. - FFing Enigma
Man... I'm slow today. It took WAAAAYY to long to pickup on ---sheveled. LOL! Glen and Tina, y'all rock! - Anthony K. Valley © from email
A shirt with "Ept and Gruntled" and an alpaca on it would be awesome. Sign me up for five. - Hookuh Tinypants
Wouldn't it just? Because alpacas always look like they're smiling and perhaps plotting some mischief, and if that's not the definition of "ept and gruntled" I don't know what is! - FFing Enigma
Well, we are cool like that Chris. And in other news: I think I found just the alpaca for this shirt. - FFing Enigma
isn't the opposite term to inept "adept"? so, inept is useless, adept is good at it.. would ept be "average at it"? - alphaxion
Good point. Then again, I do find myself to be rather average in most things so I think the shirt would still work. Actually, the meaning 'average and happy' is perhaps appropriate. - FFing Enigma
I'm down with "average and happy." Where do I place my order? - Anthony K. Valley © from email

I'm quite combobulated this morning. - Kevin Fox
Yeah, I'm working on a shirt cause now I really want one. Hence my post about vectorizing an alpaca! - FFing Enigma
Yes my friends there you have it, the terms ept, shelved, gruntled and vectorizing alpaca in one post. One for the FF Hall of Fame. - SteVe C
Steve, I am positively whelmed. - Ladyepiphanybug
Face it, The English Language is just bizzare - Brent - Yes I am
I love the Online Etymology Dictionary. Oddly enough, 'dis-' in 'disgruntled' isn't the usual negation, but provides emphasis. http://www.etymonline.com/index... So 'disgruntled' is even more gruntled than 'gruntled'. 'Inept' is derived from Latin 'ineptus' which can be parsed as 'in-' + 'aptus', so the opposite of 'inept' would be 'apt'. http://www.etymonline.com/index... - Victor Ganata
isn't EPT early pregnancy test? - Mike Nencetti
But Victor, that takes all the fun out of it, not to mention making my alpaca useless. - FFing Enigma
Shame on you Tina, there is no such thing as a useless vectorized alpaca - SteVe C
Tina, you always make me laugh! :D - Anne Bouey
A Very Descript Man (attributed to a J. H. Parker) I am such a dolent man, I eptly work each day; My acts are all becilic, I've just ane things to say. My nerves are strung, my hair is kempt, I'm gusting and I'm span: I look with dain on everyone And am a pudent man. I travel cognito and make A delible impression: I overcome a slight chalance, With gruntled self-possesion. My, dignation... more... - Micah

Can't help thinking about this exchange on The Office when I see "gruntled":Michael: No need for consternation. Everything is under control. Jan: Michael, last Friday one of your employees attacked another employee in your office! Michael: It was a crime of passion, Jan. Not a disgruntled employee. Everyone here is extremely gruntled. - Cheryl Jones

I think the words "ept" and "gruntled" would be well-represented by the image of a goat. A goat is ept, rarely putting a foot wrong on the sheerest of rock faces, and seems particularly gruntled while its life lacks surprises and predatory threats. - Slippy

I can't help but be a little sad when I read about all these new products that do a small part of what Grazr used to do. We were too early, and totally dropped the ball on selling the features.
Three years ago when we said the feeds were "always up to date" (the term real time hadn't been coined yet) everyone just stared at us dumbly. Even after demo'ing it people didn't seem to get it. - mikepk
For my new company I'm going to spend a lot more time on the selling part. Grazr had too many engineers at the time. - mikepk
Too early is almost worse than too late. - Todd Hoff
Yeah. The other sin we committed, we were too ambitious. Grazr did too much (it's been completely nerfed now). Real time feed parsing, merging, processing, a full hosted scripting environment with a template language, an online outliner + subscription manager (with neat drag and drop features) and most people just knew the widget. Made the product completely schizophrenic. Oh well, onward and upward. :) - mikepk
I was going back through old posts (like our TechCrunch writeup, and when Robert Scoble blasted Grazr)... it's depressing me too much. I need to get back to work on my new thing. :) - mikepk

Gah! I can't make it. Already have plans with a friend making his sketch comedy debut. Have a Newcastle for me? - Derrick
I'm definitely a "maybe". I'd really like to make it out, but I've already called in a few babysitting favors this week thanks to a few late nights at the office. - Brett Kelly from IM
That's right during Trish's reunion. :( - Josh Haley
Dang it we're booked at another party that night otherwsie we'd be there just for the lego store across the way from it. Have fun. Anyone good playing at the House of Blues there that evening? - SteVe C
Brett, why not just bring the kid(s) with you? and "Elizabeth" too. I hadn't planned to get a babysitter. - chrisofspades
well, they're 2 and 4, so I'd definitely spend the entire evening chasing them around - plus, their bedtime is 7:30 :) - Brett Kelly from IM
7:30!! I want to know how you did that. mine is 4 and the earliest she'll go down is 8:30. but on the weekends I'll let her stay up a little later. I always bring her w/ me to places like this and she's never a problem, but you got me thinking it might be wiser to find a sitter. especially if I want margaritas. - chrisofspades

It's looking like I'm going to be a no-show tonight. Bringing the kids would be fun and everything, but I'm afraid that I would spend the entire time chasing them around and have very little chance to talk to everybody. Sorry :( - Brett Kelly

“Do not disobey me,” barked the obnoxious LAPD officer to the guitarist who attempted to unlawfully play ‘Stairway to Heaven’ at Venice Beach. Justice was served when the guitarist was arrested (for not having California ID) and his friend for “interfering” (i.e. asking a question.) Awesome community relations I just witnessed.

I can just see it now, "so what you in for?... Stairway to heaven". If the confrontation was based on a specific complaint I can see the need for the"informing" the offender of the law. I wonder what kind of identification is required to play guitar. Is there a busker license? - Dave Roth
@Thomas - I tried to elucidate above .. since he is a performer, and in one of the little blocks on OFW, using an amp, etc. - he is required to "shut down" at sunset. It was definitely after sunset. I'm confused: why is it FFers complain about strangers, "rude new comers" noise, etc etc etc but will then turn around and talk about how FF growth is flat? Call me crazy, but you can't have growth without newbies folks.
We were all newbies once. - Steve Lowe
some of us still are. - Mike Nencetti
I'm not sure those are the same complainers. - Jandy
Complaining for some is their normal interaction with the world. When we all started using social media tools, we were all aggravating to a degree. I thought it was the old timers who were annoying. :-) - Robert Scoble
I'm passionate about new users as the services needs them to grow and feel that FF doesn't support them very well, e.g. no proper tutorial upon completing registration and the issue with the suggested users list. It's one reason why I've created the FF-Beginners group here: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... and why I check for new users (as best I can) daily and welcome them aboard. - Kol Tregaskes
Scoble, is that you trying to instigate a "Get off my lawn!" moment? ;-) I definitely try to welcome the new users I come across and answer any questions as best I can. And yes, I've run into people who make me want to bash my head in with a ball peen hammer in the process (both new and old), but I handle them the same way I do in real life: polite interactions only when necessary. - FFing Enigma
You mean kind of like how the flood of AOL newbies helped grow the Internet back when? But please let's not restart to old game of duping them in to posting "me too" like back in the alt.news days. ;) - Michael Leonard
Darren, my first month on FF was no fun at all. I followed maybe 30 people, no one was following me, and I got my main feed in my feed reader. The result? No interaction on the items I posted, I didn't interact on items other people posted, and the posts that DID get interaction drove me nuts by reappearing all the time in my feed reader. Once I threw my hands up and decided to just hang out here and have fun with it, my experience completely changed.. - FFing Enigma
It definitely takes time to understand how Friendfeed works. I was lucky when I joined in that a few people subscribed right away, so I got to see some interaction in progress from the start. Even so it took a few weeks to really learn the system. - John (bird whisperer)
I think starting on FF can be hard, people don't follow you automatically when you follow them as many do on Twitter, if you don't have a decent feed no one subscribes to you but it is unlikely you will have the motivation to have a decent feed with no audience. On Twitter you will be followed mostly by bots and people that will never read your tweets but your followers count increases... more... - M F
I think a new user tutorial should include an live interactive post and comment part at the end, with something generic like "Hi just joined FriendFeed" in the title. Then us old users could choose to have a saved search that seeks out these posts and welcomes the new user? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't know, Kol, that almost seems kind of forced. With the system as it is now, I as a new user would probably find good people to follow by search. If there's an interactive signup tutorial, perhaps it'd be worthwhile to have a part where you enter three words or phrases that you're interested in. Me, I'd pick 'hilarious', science, and a specific turn of phrase. Use those words and setup custom searches in the tutorial, and you have a ready-made list of people with interests similar to your own. - FFing Enigma
I will make people mad but... SOME early adopters get BIG on a site when its just early adopters there... then Mainstreamers get involved... and they wanna see kitties and boobs and not talk about bandwidth and apps and unique visitors! But there is way more of them and the numbers are moved off the Techie Early adopters and it goes to a Kardashian... This pisses off SOME early adopters and they bitch about the newbies. Then they move to a new product. Cycle of life! (My uneducated thoughts!) - Cody Heitschmidt
You have a point, Cody, but I really do think FF offers features that can prevent that. 1) Only subscribe to people when you want to see the MAJORITY their content. 2) Hide imported services you don't want to see. 3) Use saved searches to find content of interest to you based on keywords rather than poster. I post a lot of useless crap so I don't expect certain people to follow me.... more... - FFing Enigma
I completely agree with you FF Kicks a huge pile of ass. i love it. i was just trying to give my opinion on why early adopters (again just SOME of them) bitch about newbies. That's a change, but have just started utilizing them as well in addition so it's easy to see why. - James Stratford
Akiva, I'm trying to bring more of the FriendFeed, Twitter, etc. conversation over to my personal blog, personally. IMO that's something e-mail can't backup - the conversations are what I'm trying to own even more than the content. - Jesse Stay
Jesse, ah, yeah, that's a great point. I didn't even consider the comments. You would almost think that there was a business idea in here somewhere: some kind of cross-platform/cross-site back-up solution for people who blogs and comments strewn all over the Internet. - Akiva
Its difficult to control the formatting in posterous: its great for photos plus captions, but will you be attempting to publish long-form essays or other articles there too? I use posterous/tumblr for quick little things and blogger for longer articles. - DGentry
Akiva, technically, you could use Disqus or Backtype to do that, but again, I want it all happening around my blog and my brand. I want control, not another company to control. - Jesse Stay
Technically you could use Disqus or Backtype, but that is not the easiest implementation and then the commenters need accounts, don't they? I agree with Akiva, there is a great need for an easy product that could integrate disparate comment threads and bring them back to a blog. - Laura Norvig
I don't even necessarily want them in a blog. I want them in some kind of format that I can store them, manipulate them, and/or re-consume them without having to rely on all of the original source sites/formats. I'm talking about a back-up system and not an import system. - Akiva
Laura, the commenters don't need Disqus accounts. See Fred Wilson's breakdown: http://www.avc.com/a_vc... - Bruce Lewis
@DG I will be. Try posting to it from GMail. - Steve Rubel
One thing. Posterous converts all embedded media links into internal references, so you will NOT be able to get your content off their servers if anything ever goes wrong. Go into the source view of one your posts on Posterous which includes a YouTube video or whatever, and you'll see what I mean. - Marlin Forbes
And another thing, you want control over your brand? Posterous doesn't allow much in the way of customization of the blog design. Last time I used it, every blog on their system looked exactly the same. Way to stand out from the crowd. Wanna adjust the behaviour of the blog by adding plugins? No can do. I like the idea, but if the only reason you're doing it is for the auto-posting by e-mail, then there's loads of ways of doing that without losing control over your content. - Marlin Forbes
Posterous SEO has room for improvement. They are aware of this but have no immediate plans to address this. Just something to consider. - jho

@JH how? - Steve Rubel from email
@Jesse I agree with everything you are saying... but regarding ownership -- what about all the content you pump into FF, FB, and twitter? you don't own that - andy brudtkuhl
Jesse and Andy - As I understand it, content you create is yours. But Steve would be relying on Posterous to display that content. A couple of backup strategies come to mind. It's there in your email, nicely backed up. You could autopost that content to Tumblr or, say, a Wordpress.com blog, where it will be there as a live backup. Comments, though, are for now stuck on Posterous, and it would require screen scraping to retrieve them. I don't know if/when the Posterous guys intend to make them exportable. - Eric Johnson
Actually, the Posterous API supports export of posts, media *and comments*. So with a little scripting, you can take it all with you should you need to leave. http://posterous.com/api... - Eric Johnson
Good debate here with very valid points (re: control, SEO, etc.). I would say that Posterous (or Tumblr) should only be 1 of the many elements of your social media presence. Can see Steve's need for a shorter outlet though, as I've been using Posterous myself in this way for the last 6 months, as a "Quick Hits" outlet to post excerpts and brief responses to -... more... - Alex Schleber
I agree with those who do not agree: you lose conreol, tracking data, referrers etc. You have far less conreol over the communications (and gaining that is the main reasin to blog anyways ;) ) - oliver gassner
Oliver that's not the case with Posterous. - Steve Rubel from email

Today is Tuesday. Independence Day is this Saturday. That means that, in theory, I have Friday off. The question is, how best to broach the subject with Boss.... I think I'll stick with the "Hey, what are YOU doing for 4th of July this weekend?" That way he can say we have Friday off and it'll all be his idea ;-)
In Belarus it's 3rd of July - so we are luckier this year :D - Sasha Kovaliov
Manipulating the boss man...love it! - Jess
Matthew, he is 'human resources'. Small companies have both benefits and drawbacks... Sasha, normally when July 4th falls on a weekend it is observed on the closest weekday, but this year seems to be a bit different. The Federal Reserve isn't observing it on Friday, which means banks aren't closing this year. - FFing Enigma
or just ask what he's doing on his Friday off :) - LPH™ and his dog P™ from BuddyFeed
Tina, are you working in a bank? - Sasha Kovaliov
No, I don't work in a bank. However, most 'official' or federal holidays in the US are patterned after the holidays that are observed by the banking system. - FFing Enigma
Hence why the UK's holidays are called 'Bank Holidays'. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
hope your plan works - Kevin J Hatton
My plan didn't work at all. I asked what he was doing for the 4th this weekend and he said "kayaking" which is what he does every weekend. He didn't even think about the fact that it was the 4th. Maybe I'll try bringing up the fact that banks aren't closing for the observance on Friday and see what he says.... - FFing Enigma
He's playing with you. You should just play straight and ask. - Jess
AHA!!!! The mail man just came by. I casually asked if the mail would run on Friday. He said yes, and then asked if we'd be open. Boss immediately said "Nope!". WOOHOO!!! - FFing Enigma
It is Canada day here tomorrow, and if anyone works they receive time and a half by law. Does the same apply for the 4th of July? - Garin Kilpatrick
Most companies large enough to have an HR department do pay time and a half to hourly employees that work on holidays. When I was a CSR I would work almost every holiday b/c you got 1.5 your rate PLUS the holiday pay. Since I'm salary now, that would no longer apply (though I would probably get a comp day in trade for working a holiday if I did). - FFing Enigma
staying indoors, it's not worth the hassle of the check points and bad drivers. Plus I can see the fire works where I live. - Zehnchu

w00t! The New York Times Finally Advocates Stealing Intellectual Property - http://thomashawk.com/2009...
Heh heh. It’s nice to see the NY Times *finally* come out advocating a moral position that intellectual property theft is alright as long as you don’t get caught. Zajawinski gets beat up pretty hard in the comments section of her post from a bunch of photographers who think she is stealing their work. Typical cry babies. Do I personally have a problem with what Zajawinski’s advocating here? No way. I think it’s great. And I guarantee you that most of the photographers crying about “image theft,” in the comments section of the post have all illegally copied music themselves. That’s the hypocrisy with too many photographers these days. I used to have a friend who was constantly pulling down tracks off of Hype Machine and saving them for their own use (and resending them to me) and then bitching all the time about people stealing images. It’s like it’s ok to rip off music, but God forbid someone dare download my precious photograph that I took of a seal last month — even though in both cases the material is being used purely for personal use. - Thomas Hawk
So it follows that it's okay to rip music out of music videos that the record labels post online, right? - Kevin Fox
I'd say it's ok yes. Or better yet, just go to Limewire, save a step and get it for free. I'm also cool with people downloading videos straight from YouTube to their computer as well. - Thomas Hawk
Except grabbing something off LimeWire doesn't match the model of 'you put it on the internet, so it's fair game.' If you sold someone a photograph and they decided to post it on Flickr, would you be okay with people downloading that photo and using it? - Kevin Fox
Yeah, if I sold someone a photo and they put it on the internet I'd still be ok with people downloading it and using it for personal use. - Thomas Hawk
the key point for Thomas is the term "personal use". as in no loss of serious income. for commercial use... you best get yours! - Marco
Heh, does it still count if I visit last.fm, listen to a few tracks, fire up a Konsole session, enter the Firefox cache directory, run "file * | grep MPEG", move the files out elsewhere and then run a tagging tool on them? ;) - Tyson Key
I agree with the sentiment of the post, though. - Tyson Key
Tyson you sound like you're a Pro at this stuff. - Thomas Hawk
@Tyson, as long as you don't attempt to share those files with anyone, you should be ok. At least according to 12 Minnesota jurors. - Wizetux
Aah, and what about Fair Dealing in the UK, out of interest? I assume that it's legal to do stuff like that for personal use though, although people will do it regardless, silently since tools are too easy to come across. - Tyson Key
Of course, I don't intend to redistribute the stuff, despite it being somewhat "freely-available" (to use the term loosely) without charge to anyone who can be bothered to navigate to last.fm or YouTube and knows where to look for the cached files. Hell, even RealNetworks produces a tool for doing that sort of stuff (in the form of RealPlayer, which comes in a paid "Plus" edition, too)... - Tyson Key
Hmm, food for thought - what about people who still record stuff from FM radio onto cassettes, CDs or onto their computer's hard disk through analogue audio cables, using crappy el-cheapo boomboxes? Or those who used to record stuff from TV broadcasts onto DVDs or VHS cassettes and pass 'em around? - Tyson Key
(Within a select group of people, of course) - Tyson Key
It's anything but cut and dried, isn't it? Is personal use anything i do with it, short of sell it for profit myself? Funny thing, when you think about writing and copyright, the massive prevalence of linking, retweeting, cut and pasting, etc. has unbolted that content from it's easily trackable piers. It's like porn, perhaps - you know IP theft when you see it. - Thom Kennon
As a musician ( though not well paid) I have no problem with people downloading music. Rarely are they downloading the higher quality copies that they would purchase. So, there's still something left to sell to the people who want it, and it furthers the music that I'm trying to get people to listen to in the first place. I want people to hear it, ad if they aren't willing to pay for it, why should I let that stop them from having it. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
For what it's worth, I used to use Gnutella (KaZaA/FastTrack prior to that even), various forums and MP3 link dumps and BitTorrent pretty much exclusively, until moving over to last.fm and YouTube, since the quality and selection was degenerating over time pretty quickly (partly thanks to empty legal threats against various sites and users of P2P services, fewer people hosting nodes/content, and fake file injection spam). - Tyson Key
Of course, I discovered far more content that way, that I would have never heard on the radio, or found in a CD shop here, but it doesn't mean that I'm not willing to pay for content, or that I don't have any physical media for some stuff... - Tyson Key
It's all digital bitstreams anyway, barring stuff like analogue radio/TV or printed materials - they're easy to duplicate, and no matter what barriers are put in place, people will duplicate them and redistribute them. - Tyson Key
From a "making money" perspective, I think it'd be much better to, as Cory Doctorow says, "Think like a dandelion" and set up a home where users can legally purchase your work to put up in their homes. The farther your work gets spread online, the more potential buyers it will reach: http://www.locusmag.com/Feature... - Jonathan Blackhall
I agree with the spirit of your post, I do honour the license under which they are posted on flickr, youtube or last.fm. Although I don't download music and movies, I do profit from the downloading of movies or music, when I am at a friend's house and watch a downloaded movie, or listen and sing along to a downloaded piece of music. - Daniel W. Crompton
