I can't help but be a little sad when I read about all these new products that do a small part of what Grazr used to do. We were too early, and totally dropped the ball on selling the features.
Three years ago when we said the feeds were "always up to date" (the term real time hadn't been coined yet) everyone just stared at us dumbly. Even after demo'ing it people didn't seem to get it.
- mikepk
For my new company I'm going to spend a lot more time on the selling part. Grazr had too many engineers at the time.
- mikepk
Too early is almost worse than too late.
- Todd Hoff
Yeah. The other sin we committed, we were too ambitious. Grazr did too much (it's been completely nerfed now). Real time feed parsing, merging, processing, a full hosted scripting environment with a template language, an online outliner + subscription manager (with neat drag and drop features) and most people just knew the widget. Made the product completely schizophrenic. Oh well, onward and upward. :)
- mikepk
I was going back through old posts (like our TechCrunch writeup, and when Robert Scoble blasted Grazr)... it's depressing me too much. I need to get back to work on my new thing. :)
- mikepk
Seriously. Would you people stop liking/commenting on this? It keeps popping up to the top of my stream and I have to stare at it again.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I have seen this a million times on myspace for years... we all have I'm sure. it is just great to comment here because then we can snag new people that are stupid enough to comment. ....you were the one who posted it Akiva. Fresh Fish for the TROLLS... hey Igor... 86 likes here means the bounty is ours. mo ha ha ha ah Fresh fish were looking at the stupid cat.

It seems to be the only animated gif that doesn't crash my browser, too. COINCIDENCE?!

We need to create a constant stream of Goats.cx pictures just waterfalling down everyone's main feed, so that when these Facebook types come to look at their new place and start measuring for curtains, they run away as fast as they can.

I made reservations for party of 10. So help me get a good head count here, ffer friends :) These pics are from tonight - I scoped it out. The third photo is bait to get Johnny to leave down under and join us :D
- Micah Wittman
Please count Caroline and I in. We were only about 10 min. away from you today. :-)
- Mark Davidson
Gah! I can't make it. Already have plans with a friend making his sketch comedy debut. Have a Newcastle for me?
- Derrick
I'm definitely a "maybe". I'd really like to make it out, but I've already called in a few babysitting favors this week thanks to a few late nights at the office.
- Brett Kelly
from IM
That's right during Trish's reunion. :(
- Josh Haley
Dang it we're booked at another party that night otherwsie we'd be there just for the lego store across the way from it. Have fun. Anyone good playing at the House of Blues there that evening?
- Steve C
Brett, why not just bring the kid(s) with you? and "Elizabeth" too. I hadn't planned to get a babysitter.
- chrisofspades
well, they're 2 and 4, so I'd definitely spend the entire evening chasing them around - plus, their bedtime is 7:30 :)
- Brett Kelly

7:30!! I want to know how you did that. mine is 4 and the earliest she'll go down is 8:30. but on the weekends I'll let her stay up a little later. I always bring her w/ me to places like this and she's never a problem, but you got me thinking it might be wiser to find a sitter. especially if I want margaritas.

I'm hitting Downtown Disney tonight. Then Disneyland all day Friday. Can't make it to this meet up on Saturday night. I'll be at my 20th HS reunion hoping everyone gained as much weight as I have since high school.

its disney I sure hope kids are welcome. I'll be bringing mine.

I don't know if we'll be able to make it tonight. We're going to try, but right now I'm pretty miserable.
- Admiral Anika
It's looking like I'm going to be a no-show tonight. Bringing the kids would be fun and everything, but I'm afraid that I would spend the entire time chasing them around and have very little chance to talk to everybody. Sorry :(
- Brett Kelly
Mark, I'll be there (I just zoomed down from San Diego—you bet it's a go :)
- Micah Wittman
Brett, I can understand that - I've been chasing my kids all week :)
- Micah Wittman
Anika, you hope you two can, but of course we'd understand—hope you're feeling better. If you make it, well, I hear Johnny is giving free back rubs ;)
- Micah Wittman
I wish I could go, but I'm in too much pain.
- Admiral Anika
Just take care of yourself, Anika (or let Adrian do so—yeah, even better). We'll see you another time.
- Micah Wittman
Ok Micah...I might be a little late but I'll be there.
- Mark Krynsky
Caroline and I are going to have to cancel. we got a puppy last night and just got back from the vet a couple of hours ago. The puppy is sick and requires all kinds of meds every two hours. I don't feel right leaving her alone, especially if she has a reaction. Sorry we couldn't make it. We were looking forward to meeting everyone.

It was just the best meeting Chris (chrisofspades) with his adorable daughter and Mark Krynsky. LA area ffers are awesome—keep on keep'n on with the meetups.

It's funny how LA has the most FF meetups. There are more FFers here in the SF/Silicon Valley area and I don't know that there's ever been a meetup here.

Spidra, if you tweet it, they will come?
- chrisofspades
Josh, are you a carpenter (channelling Ellen) 'cause you nail-ed it :D
- Micah Wittman
Not if *I* do, chris. I haven't got the buzz, the juice. I'm not a social media expert with >1000 followers on Twitter. :)
- Spidra Webster
Spidra, after you tweet it, you have to find James Earl Jones, then the ghost of your father will appear, then, they will come (Field of Dreams reference, sorry if you haven't seen it)

I also laughed first, as it's a great shot with a cute tagline, but realizing that you were living in Tehran then made me think about young Iranians being tortured by their &%#@$ government.

Pierre, I have that I live in Tehran in allegiance with the young and not so young trying desperately to maintain some freedom from an oppressive Government. I actually live in California, USA. Its the same for the green surrounding my head in the Icon. I do agree with your thoughts though. It isn't right.

“Do not disobey me,” barked the obnoxious LAPD officer to the guitarist who attempted to unlawfully play ‘Stairway to Heaven’ at Venice Beach. Justice was served when the guitarist was arrested (for not having California ID) and his friend for “interfering” (i.e. asking a question.) Awesome community relations I just witnessed.
@Mark - not according to the law; that's why this is interesting to me. @Jeff - I'm not clear on it. I had a long (and extraordinarily confusing) conversation with Deputy Assface's partner, who was friendly (ahem, relatively speaking) but couldn't really explain to me what I had just witnessed. The nutshell - as I understand it at the moment - is that vendors and performers who are...

- Jeff P. Henderson
what's the problem with someone playing their guitar on the street? Sounds like this cop was an asshole.
- Thomas Hawk
I can just see it now, "so what you in for?... Stairway to heaven". If the confrontation was based on a specific complaint I can see the need for the"informing" the offender of the law. To me it's just another reminder of the "police state" that we as Americans are living in. Another American incarcerated. Great.
- Keith Beucler
I wonder what kind of identification is required to play guitar. Is there a busker license?
- Dave Roth
@Thomas - I tried to elucidate above .. since he is a performer, and in one of the little blocks on OFW, using an amp, etc. - he is required to "shut down" at sunset. It was definitely after sunset. As I was passing by, he was starting up ‘Highway to Heaven’ and it was sounding quite sweet (and not very loud, BTW) and so a few of us had stopped/gathered around. The cop truck pulled up....

He had a valid passport? This story makes me sad. A ticket for breaking the entertainment curfew seems reasonable... Arrest does not. Unless of course he was a re-occuring offender and perhaps a criminal history. Perhaps the police knew something about his record that wasn't readily obvious? (Or so I am hoping.)
- Mark Davidson
from BuddyFeed
@Mark - w/r/t his history, he was arrested before any information about him had been gathered. They didn't know anything about the guy.
- Anthony Citrano
I'm confused: why is it FFers complain about strangers, "rude new comers" noise, etc etc etc but will then turn around and talk about how FF growth is flat? Call me crazy, but you can't have growth without newbies folks.
+1 Tina. I agree. If you keep chasing off newcomers, you're doing more harm than good to FF. Sure, spammers should be run off. But if someone is just annoying to you, that's no justification for attacking them and chasing them away from FF.
- Jason, Queazy
Complaining for some is their normal interaction with the world. When we all started using social media tools, we were all aggravating to a degree. Need to lay off the newbies a bit, unless they are going down the path of relentless marketing and get rich quick posts, then it is smackdown time! ;-)
- Eban Crawford
I think my example this week with VerothicA from deviantART is a good one. I could have easily blocked the user and thrown abuse back but I don't see that as being healthy for me, for the other user and for the community.
- Kol Tregaskes
I thought it was the old timers who were annoying. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm passionate about new users as the services needs them to grow and feel that FF doesn't support them very well, e.g. no proper tutorial upon completing registration and the issue with the suggested users list. It's one reason why I've created the FF-Beginners group here: http://friendfeed.com/friendf... and why I check for new users (as best I can) daily and welcome them aboard.
- Kol Tregaskes
Scoble, is that you trying to instigate a "Get off my lawn!" moment? ;-) I definitely try to welcome the new users I come across and answer any questions as best I can. And yes, I've run into people who make me want to bash my head in with a ball peen hammer in the process (both new and old), but I handle them the same way I do in real life: polite interactions only when necessary.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I do have to admit it's taken me quite a while to find my feet here at FF. It also took me some time to find my way on Twitter, too. I'm finding myself using both services for different things now. It also takes me more effort to find people I'd like to subscribe to on FF for some reason. Maybe because new people keep getting chased off? ;-)
- Darren Landrum
You mean kind of like how the flood of AOL newbies helped grow the Internet back when? But please let's not restart to old game of duping them in to posting "me too" like back in the alt.news days. ;)
- Michael Leonard
Darren, my first month on FF was no fun at all. I followed maybe 30 people, no one was following me, and I got my main feed in my feed reader. The result? No interaction on the items I posted, I didn't interact on items other people posted, and the posts that DID get interaction drove me nuts by reappearing all the time in my feed reader. Once I threw my hands up and decided to just hang out here and have fun with it, my experience completely changed..
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It definitely takes time to understand how Friendfeed works. I was lucky when I joined in that a few people subscribed right away, so I got to see some interaction in progress from the start. Even so it took a few weeks to really learn the system.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I think starting on FF can be hard, people don't follow you automatically when you follow them as many do on Twitter, if you don't have a decent feed no one subscribes to you but it is unlikely you will have the motivation to have a decent feed with no audience. On Twitter you will be followed mostly by bots and people that will never read your tweets but your followers count increases...

I think a new user tutorial should include an live interactive post and comment part at the end, with something generic like "Hi just joined FriendFeed" in the title. Then us old users could choose to have a saved search that seeks out these posts and welcomes the new user?
- Kol Tregaskes
Well, I just decided to turn off all of the "Publish FF to Twitter" options on my account here. No need to look in two different places for replies to something I published to only one. I think this will help me adapt a lot.
- Darren Landrum
I don't know, Kol, that almost seems kind of forced. With the system as it is now, I as a new user would probably find good people to follow by search. If there's an interactive signup tutorial, perhaps it'd be worthwhile to have a part where you enter three words or phrases that you're interested in. Me, I'd pick 'hilarious', science, and a specific turn of phrase. Use those words and setup custom searches in the tutorial, and you have a ready-made list of people with interests similar to your own.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I will make people mad but... SOME early adopters get BIG on a site when its just early adopters there... then Mainstreamers get involved... and they wanna see kitties and boobs and not talk about bandwidth and apps and unique visitors! But there is way more of them and the numbers are moved off the Techie Early adopters and it goes to a Kardashian... This pisses off SOME early adopters and they bitch about the newbies. Then they move to a new product. Cycle of life! (My uneducated thoughts!)
- Cody Heitschmidt
You have a point, Cody, but I really do think FF offers features that can prevent that. 1) Only subscribe to people when you want to see the MAJORITY their content. 2) Hide imported services you don't want to see. 3) Use saved searches to find content of interest to you based on keywords rather than poster. I post a lot of useless crap so I don't expect certain people to follow me....

BTW, you can find Wordpress plugins that do the auto-posting on self-hosted Wordpress installations.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, don't you post to posterous via e-mail? Seems like everything you create will at least be in your Sent folder.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, it just seems like you're losing control by doing that. I can post to my blog via e-mail as well with the right plugins.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, true. I'm just wondering if something like posterous might be a good solution for people who have had their urge to fully blog sapped away by sites like FriendFeed. I barely post anywhere now but often wish I had something more flexible than FriendFeed but without all of the hassle and overhead of running a WordPress blog. People don't seem to complain about giving up e-mail to Google; why is posterous different?
- Akiva Moskovitz
That's a change, but have just started utilizing them as well in addition so it's easy to see why.
- James Stratford
Akiva, I'm trying to bring more of the FriendFeed, Twitter, etc. conversation over to my personal blog, personally. IMO that's something e-mail can't backup - the conversations are what I'm trying to own even more than the content.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, ah, yeah, that's a great point. I didn't even consider the comments. You would almost think that there was a business idea in here somewhere: some kind of cross-platform/cross-site back-up solution for people who blogs and comments strewn all over the Internet.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Its difficult to control the formatting in posterous: its great for photos plus captions, but will you be attempting to publish long-form essays or other articles there too? I use posterous/tumblr for quick little things and blogger for longer articles.
- DGentry
Akiva, technically, you could use Disqus or Backtype to do that, but again, I want it all happening around my blog and my brand. I want control, not another company to control.
- Jesse Stay
Technically you could use Disqus or Backtype, but that is not the easiest implementation and then the commenters need accounts, don't they? I agree with Akiva, there is a great need for an easy product that could integrate disparate comment threads and bring them back to a blog.
- Laura Norvig
I don't even necessarily want them in a blog. I want them in some kind of format that I can store them, manipulate them, and/or re-consume them without having to rely on all of the original source sites/formats. I'm talking about a back-up system and not an import system.
- Akiva Moskovitz
@DG I will be. Try posting to it from GMail.
- Steve Rubel
One thing. Posterous converts all embedded media links into internal references, so you will NOT be able to get your content off their servers if anything ever goes wrong. Go into the source view of one your posts on Posterous which includes a YouTube video or whatever, and you'll see what I mean.
- Marlin Forbes
And another thing, you want control over your brand? Posterous doesn't allow much in the way of customization of the blog design. Last time I used it, every blog on their system looked exactly the same. Way to stand out from the crowd. Wanna adjust the behaviour of the blog by adding plugins? No can do. I like the idea, but if the only reason you're doing it is for the auto-posting by e-mail, then there's loads of ways of doing that without losing control over your content.
- Marlin Forbes
Posterous SEO has room for improvement. They are aware of this but have no immediate plans to address this. Just something to consider.
- Jauder Ho
@Robert Zemanta is great, but why is "look more like a blogpost" a desireable trait?
- Wade Dorrell
@Jesse I agree with everything you are saying... but regarding ownership -- what about all the content you pump into FF, FB, and twitter? you don't own that
- andy brudtkuhl
Jesse and Andy - As I understand it, content you create is yours. But Steve would be relying on Posterous to display that content. A couple of backup strategies come to mind. It's there in your email, nicely backed up. You could autopost that content to Tumblr or, say, a Wordpress.com blog, where it will be there as a live backup. Comments, though, are for now stuck on Posterous, and it would require screen scraping to retrieve them. I don't know if/when the Posterous guys intend to make them exportable.
- Eric Johnson
Actually, the Posterous API supports export of posts, media *and comments*. So with a little scripting, you can take it all with you should you need to leave. http://posterous.com/api...
- Eric Johnson
Good debate here with very valid points (re: control, SEO, etc.). I would say that Posterous (or Tumblr) should only be 1 of the many elements of your social media presence. Can see Steve's need for a shorter outlet though, as I've been using Posterous myself in this way for the last 6 months, as a "Quick Hits" outlet to post excerpts and brief responses to -...

Today is Tuesday. Independence Day is this Saturday. That means that, in theory, I have Friday off. The question is, how best to broach the subject with Boss.... I think I'll stick with the "Hey, what are YOU doing for 4th of July this weekend?" That way he can say we have Friday off and it'll all be his idea ;-)
Matthew, he is 'human resources'. Small companies have both benefits and drawbacks... Sasha, normally when July 4th falls on a weekend it is observed on the closest weekday, but this year seems to be a bit different. The Federal Reserve isn't observing it on Friday, which means banks aren't closing this year.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
No, I don't work in a bank. However, most 'official' or federal holidays in the US are patterned after the holidays that are observed by the banking system.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Hence why the UK's holidays are called 'Bank Holidays'. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
My plan didn't work at all. I asked what he was doing for the 4th this weekend and he said "kayaking" which is what he does every weekend. He didn't even think about the fact that it was the 4th. Maybe I'll try bringing up the fact that banks aren't closing for the observance on Friday and see what he says....
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
He's playing with you. You should just play straight and ask.
- Jess
"I have to go to a 4th of July picnic right after work on Friday, and I'll be running late for it as is, can I just wear my bikini and floppy hat to work that day?"
- Matthew DeVries
AHA!!!! The mail man just came by. I casually asked if the mail would run on Friday. He said yes, and then asked if we'd be open. Boss immediately said "Nope!". WOOHOO!!!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It is Canada day here tomorrow, and if anyone works they receive time and a half by law. Does the same apply for the 4th of July?
- Garin Kilpatrick
Most companies large enough to have an HR department do pay time and a half to hourly employees that work on holidays. When I was a CSR I would work almost every holiday b/c you got 1.5 your rate PLUS the holiday pay. Since I'm salary now, that would no longer apply (though I would probably get a comp day in trade for working a holiday if I did).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
