Yahoo only paid $35 million for Flickr? That seems like a real bargain. How much did Google pay for YouTube again? - Robert Felty

I'm obsessed with data backup, yet I still need to find a solution that satisfies all my needs. Maybe this will help... - Kevin Fox
Amusing that you posted this. I just ordered one (with the network adapter). Finally someone put redundancy in an appliance without the complexity of RAID. Well, Windows Home Server did it a couple years ago, but it's Windows. I have a bunch of spare SATA disks around, so I can load it up right away. - Cyrus Lendvay
I like the 'simpler than raid, but still fault-tolerant' but part of me still likes the idea of swapping out two drives with fresh ones and putting them in a vault for an instant off-site backup. - Kevin Fox
Kevin: out of curiosity, how much data are you trying to backup? - Brian Johns
My plan is to eventually get two of them and sync between them. - Cyrus Lendvay
Brian: A 2TB photo library, acting as a fault-tolerant primary file server, as well as a periodic image off-site backup. :-) - Kevin Fox
One thing that creeped me out about the Drobo when I was looking into them several months ago was that I was under the impression that you can fill them up to the point where you lose redundancy. For example, suppose you put in a 120GB and a 250GB drive. If the 250GB drive fails you'll be able to recover at most 120GB of your data from the other drive, but I think the Drobo will let you use well over 120GB without warning. Am I wrong? - Laurence Gonsalves
(The other thing that stopped me from going with a Drobo was the USB-only connectivity. I wanted NAS so that I could at least keep my backups in a different room from the hard drives they'd be backing up. DroboShare has at least corrected that problem.) - Laurence Gonsalves
The CEO/Founder of the company is a good friend of mine (was at my wedding and was once my boss). I'll see if I can get you guys a discount, code, etc. - Louis Gray
Hi Louis. A code would be appreciated. Thnx! - Michael Carter
There are already evangelist codes that get you $25 off. I hope the discount that Louis mentions is going to be a little better than that. - Raoul Pop
Crikey, it looks like a microwave! - Sally Church via Alert Thingy
Hey guys. Just got a note from Geoff (Drobo founder). He says, "Drobo does _not_ allow you to fill the product up to a point where it's no longer redundant. You are always protected." - Louis Gray
mine works well, but little shaky with Time Machine - Drew Lucas
Louis: that's good to know. I stand corrected. I vaguely remember the "drobulator" giving me the wrong impression. I wonder if the labels changed since then, or if I'd just misread it. - Laurence Gonsalves
Just got word that the Drobo has been delivered. I can't wait to try it out. - Cyrus Lendvay
I think the Drobo is a good product but for much the same price I bought the much more powerful HP Media Server ( http://www.hp.com/united-state... ) even in a Mac/Windows household it is universally useful - it has redundant storage plus it can run server applications without anyother machine being on e.g. squeezebox for my music slim devices, remote access to files etc. - Martin Taylor
disks are the new tape - David Vasileff
SSD is the new disk. So what's the new RAM? - Kevin Fox
On-chip memory - Amir Gharaat
They sent me this today: Some bundles: http://www.drobo.com/offer/ No code ahead of the evangelist notes seen above though (yet). - Louis Gray
I want one of those, ANYONE want to give me one let me know!! - Paul
I keep waiting for a v2 of the hardware to come out! And it keeps not coming out! :) - felix
I have one of these and love it. Just bought another 750GB drive and shoved it in. Seamless. This easily takes care of my onsite data safety, but I'm still evaluating something for offsite. Amazon S3? Mozy? - Dylan Parker
