New Xbox Experience: Countdown To The New Xbox Experience
44 minutes ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
You've been hearing a lot of stuff about the New Xbox Experience over the last few months. How it'll change the 360, how it'll add a whole bunch of new features to the console, how it'll alter the very fabric of space and time around you. Well, provided you're not already playing around with it, the time for hearing about the NXE is almost over. The update is due to go live at 2:00am Pacific Time, November 19 (ie very, very soon) and provided everything goes according to plan, millions of blades and gamerpics around the world will cry out in terror, before being suddenly silenced. Then summarily replaced with something slicker, brighter and easier to use. - Michael Fidler via Bookmarklet
I can't wait! - Aram Zucker-Scharff
You only have to wait an hour! I think you'll make it. - Michael Fidler via twhirl
I think this will be the thing to turn me over to a gold account. Getting Netflix through my 360 will be nice. Yea, I can't believe how this snuck up on me. I was really excited for it when it was announced, but it sorta fell off the radar for a while. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
Is there any way of adding it without an internet connection. I just bought my 360 and I need to get a wifi adapter for it? - Michael Fidler via twhirl
No way to plug it in? I'm not sure, they may provide it as a downloadable off of xbox.com, as they do for the Backwards compatibility patches, which you can burn to CD and put in your xbox. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
Michael: I think it can be downloaded. Also, you can plug in a lan cable without the wifi-adapter. - Jemm

The Guerrilla CG Project - Computer Graphics Fundamentals
1 hour ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
The GuerrillaCG Project is a free non for profit organisation that hopes to make it easier to learn high-end computer graphics. We are building a team of volunteers to create videos, that describe in an easy and understandable manner, the fundamental concepts of computer graphics. Because core concepts rarely change with time, these videos have the potential to teach for many years into the future and help thousands of people all over the world. With enough people, it's possible that we can create a vast library covering many of the core concepts of computer graphics - Christopher Harley via Bookmarklet
Mentioned on - That Media Show - http://blip.tv/file/1474272 THE GUERRILLA CG PROJECT is a resource for helping people learn CG, or "Computer Graphics" and features tutorials from industry experts like; Andrew Silke, Glen Moyes, Greg Petchkovsky and Jake Hempson. They have tutorials for 3D Studio Max, Blender, Cinema4D, Maya, MudBox, SoftImage XSI and ZBrush, with more to follow. "Tatler: Once I was safely out of sight, I gingerly opened the magazine and started reading. Three seconds later, I was furious. Before getting to the Little Black Book section, I'd alighted on an article about a "sexy Holland Park billionairess and her fabulous life". She was called Goga Ashkenazi, and she was pictured swathed in fur, diamonds dripping pendulously from her ears. She was clutching a miniature dog that looked like it'd been peeled; one of those scrawny upholstered canine skeleton-creatures with the facial tics of a tiny frightened bird. Given the alarming way these micro-dogs pant 5,000 times a second, I always think they're about to die, that their pea-sized hearts will suddenly burst like a popcorn kernel inside their mousey little ribcage." - Grant Fitzgerald

"X-Factor: Either Alexandra or Diana (assuming she recovers) should win. The former because she's got the best voice, the latter because she's got the most interesting voice: sometimes she lets out curious little peeps and whistles when she sings, as though she's accompanied by a baby bird randomly blowing air across the top of an empty milk bottle. Either that or there's something seriously wrong with my television. We'll know for sure when the priest gets here." - Grant Fitzgerald

I wish that I could get a better shot of my FPS in warcraft in the background, but it slows to 10-20fps when I go to take the screenshot, it is normally 40-50fps under this kind of load and 100+ (which is so high as to be useless, but WoW is not the only game I play) when the machine is otherwise idle. - Michael J. "The air is already laced with diesel fumes as the conductor shouts, "All aboard!" The engineer sounds the whistle, and the locomotive lurches forward. Squeals of delight emanate from the passenger cars. This train ride is a first for many of the children. The adults share their excitement because they are setting off on a unique international adventure. One or two Saturdays a month, nearly 250 passengers -- kids and grown-ups -- climb aboard the 1930s-era passenger cars in Campo in eastern San Diego County for the one-hour trip to Tecate, a town that provides a tranquil alternative to bustling and crime-ridden Tijuana, about 30 miles west." - Anna Haro via Bookmarklet
"Volunteers from the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, which runs the trips, have restored the cars to their original appearance. Until they were retired in the mid-1980s, the cars trundled across northern New Jersey for more than five decades, carrying New York City commuters. But now there's not a single suit-wearing, briefcase-carrying businessman in sight, and no one is forced to stand. (The original rattan was, thankfully, replaced with vinyl-covered foam about 30 years ago.)The engine chugs along at 15 mph. Train aficionados, including Bob and Sandy Schussler, share the history of this stretch of track, which until the mid-1950s carried passengers traveling east from the coast. - Anna Haro
Thanks for sharing, Anna. I had to immediately reshare this article with my dad, a train aficionado. - Pete Delucchi

Thanks again for the share, Anna. My dad forwarded me the pic he took of the Tecate brewery when he rode it a while back. Also his friend used to be the trainman (car host) for these trips a while ago too! He was so happy for the fond memories brought on by this article. - Pete Delucchi

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Whalers slip out of Japanese port
22 minutes ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
The Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru has reportedly left harbour for the annual hunt in Antarctic waters. Greenpeace said the factory ship had left the port of Innoshima, near Hiroshima, without fanfare. There was no official confirmation of the departure, although officials did say the number of whales targeted would be identical to last year's hunt. An opinion poll commissioned by Greenpeace suggested that more Japanese support whaling than oppose it. The Nisshin Maru and her fleet of catcher boats will attempt to catch about 935 minke and 50 fin whales during the Southern Ocean summer, under regulations permitting hunting for scientific research. - BeeLing via Bookmarklet

Extreme kayakers have been condemned for canoeing down a dam in west Wales. A photographer captured the latest incident as one canoeist slid 300ft (91m) down the spillway at Llyn Brianne reservoir in Carmarthenshire, near the borders of Ceredigion and Powys. Welsh Water said the practice was dangerous and such activities were banned at the reservoir. - BeeLing via Bookmarklet
