"Been thinking about this a bit since you posted Chris... Some thoughts: - i _love_ some of the concepts from say garyv - work your butt off on something u love and eventually, community, fame, $$ will follow...and i plan to pursue this on 1 main topic/idea on a part time basis...issue i have is that it takes a _long_ time and that inherently means u have some decent $$ up your sleeve or already coming in to afford you that time....in gary's case, he had the wine biz...not sure about your case or other similar.... - in reality - i need to make $$ a bit sooner than that model...i looked for quite a while at the standard internet marketing models...affiliate, ecommerce etc...for 90%+ of this though, i have no interest/passion in the typical 'find a pain, solve it' advice...for the few interests of mine (ie wine) that i could see myself building information of physical commerce sites around; the competition was already pretty embedded.... So - what am i doing - venturing to the offline..."

Wow, 40% ??? Americans really have turned on the republican party haven't they LOL
- Scott Bannon
Assuming she and John McCain don't win this week: I'd like to see her make a run in 2012, for sure. That said, I'm thankful that she would have little chance of even winning the 2012 Republican primary.
- j1m
Is it horrifying or a demonstration of the lack of potential talent people see in the current Republican party?
- Johnny Worthington
Right John - the Republicans have a lot of great potential candidates, but most of them won't satisfy the lunatic fringe that Palin speaks to
- Chrimmus Tad
Why does this surprise you? Seriously. haha
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
I'd like to see her run. She'd be easy to beat.
- Sean Quinn
from twhirl
I'd LOVE to see her run. I've been drooling over that option for the past 3 weeks. But we don't matter. We'll have to see if she can play nice with The Village.
- Admiral Anika
Yes, because democrats have such a talent poll this time around. A no-name, one-term senator and the wife of a former President. Sometimes, you need to stick your head out of the internet group-think for a minute.
- Spencer
Now wait...if Palin does run in 2012, since she doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being taken seriously and winning, that would put the race between the Democrats and a 3rd party candidate. Yeah, I'd like to see her run too, just to give Americans more real choices.
- April Russo (app103)
@April: Remember, Bush won twice against better candidates. Palin can win if she's "marketed" right.
- Rui Pereira
@Rui & @april - or... she runs as an independent, sort of a cultural Ross Perot. Or... she teams up with Newt and they run a full R ticket from the start, freezing out anything but smarter, more metro Republicans thru the primaries and setting up an epic clash with a - hopefully still - popular incumbent in the Fall.
- Thom Kennon
Maybe just for the fun of it? I hope...
- Holger Eilhard
Names like Gregg and Jindal don't have the recognition factor yet.
- Robert Hafer
and this survey was done by whom? when? against what group(s)? i am rarely moved by "a recent poll shows.." stories. IMO, they are often attempts at managing news cycles and supporting self interest. i don't often see a poll designed to -remove-biases. i see too many designed to -support- biases. anyone got the details on this one?
- MikeAmundsen
The only bottom line that's for sure is what Ian May said.
- Micah Wittman
I think Roberto is right! Bring back Tina!
- petar vucetin
I'd like to see her on dancing with the stars! lmao

The numbers and huge sway of conservative voters in America is quite astonishing. As a liberal, at the very least if conservatives are going to get into power again, please put someone in who can speak and write well and is intelligent. The Bush's weren't that and Palin certainly isn't.

EcoAussie, Unfortunatly, Condi Rice wouldn't run.

What do you do when you've forgotton your healthy snacks and your only option is...nothing but fast food joints? Do you give up and go eat the greasiest, cheapest burger and fries and then throw away a bag full of garbage? Your excuses to indulge in unhealthy and unsustainable fare are dwindling. These days, there's lots of diet-friendly options at most fast food purveyors, and they are also making strides towards being healthier for the planet too (some more so than others, so read on).

Follow the Appalachian Mountains by plane from West Virginia to Tennessee, and you'll see the scars left by mountaintop mining - huge gray gouges where coal companies stripped away the trees and blew off the tops of mountains to get at the coal inside.

In terms of economic development, Las Vegas' growth is an amazing success. But as a quarter century of satellite images show, sprawl comes at a high price. A new series of NASA Landsat 5 images taken of the Las Vegas area over a 25-year period dramatically illustrates why some cities are finding it difficult to keep up with water demands

Of all the industries accused of pulling the ol' eco switcheroo (eco-housing, eco-banking, etc.) perhaps the most consistently maligned is eco tourism (and for good reason, see below).

I know DISQUS is aware of this and working to beat it. But wow. You know what's a bad sign? Go to the DISQUS support forums. They're usually full of spam, too.
- Chris Baskind
No, you're locked into DISQUS' system.
- Chris Baskind
Never knew anything about it. Can you restrict comments to registered folks only?
- coldbrew
Yes, and I've had to do that to keep so much link spam from actually getting live on my sites.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
Chris - r u considering just going back to normal wp commenets??...is disqus that great??
- EcoAussie
from twhirl
I like DISQUS and their people -- Daniel Ha is great. But spammers have caught on to the fact that their links are dofollow, and having so many sites concentrated like that makes DISQUS a tempting target. Yes, I'm considering returning to native WP comments.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
Disqus is bound to start charging for something, and this [comment spam filter] would be a good candidate. $20/yr?
- coldbrew
DISQUS says they're already using three stages of spam filtration. It's a difficult problem -- particularly the human-entered stuff from the professional SEO rings.
- Chris Baskind
I'm uninstalling Disqus on all my blogs today.
- Admiral Anika
Are you having the same spam crapflood issues? I just don't have time to check every single like to see if it points at a casino or whatever.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
I would not go back to normal WP comments. Akismet reported that after installing Disqus I had 99.9% less spam on my site than without it. I get maybe 3-4 spammy comments per week now, as opposed to the several hundred i'd get per month before using it. It's secure from the auto-spam bots, but yes, human entered spam is still a problem and will continue to be. I have faith in the developers, and i'll give them more time to fix this.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
How about being "ambitious" with their efforts to police and providing an ombudsman for disputes?
- coldbrew
I"m tending to lean towards Haggis on this one at the moment.
- Ian May
Is there a service that acts as a universal ombudsman?
- coldbrew
Yeah, I'm going slow on the trigger here, too. BTW, I am getting dozens of spam comments a day.
- Chris Baskind
That's funny, my spam comments shot up.I was averaging about 5 spam comment a month. I'm now averaging 3 spam comments a day. That's on 3 of my blogs, 2 of which you must sign in to make a comment.
- Admiral Anika
I saw that: horrible. Last year, some guy threw his three children off the Dauphin Island Bridge, not far from here. They all died. It's difficult to even comprehend such things.
- Chris Baskind
I thought it would be that story. I could only read halfway through it. I feel sick.
- Chris Loft
Definitely awful....Why i generally stay clear of the news.....Very little of positive value in any media.

The father is up on murder charges. Rest in Peace, wee Darcy. My heart goes out to her family, and others affected by this tragedy. Thankyou to the emergency services who tried their best to revive her.

At a 7-11 by my house, a stack of petitions beckoned at the register protesting a .25 bag tax. Is it too much to pay or too much to maybe not use a plastic bag for a few simple convenience store items? What sayeth you?
It should be enough to make you think twice before you leave your front door. Anything that helps shake the USA out of it bloated consumption has to be welcomed. Afterall when 5% of the world population use over 30% of the world resources, its time for a change.
- yodhe
Germany has a "no bags" policy. People bring their own, bag their own, and carry their own to the bus stop. My 97 year-old grandmother can do that, I'd be dammed if we can't teach the able-bodied redneck yokels in your mini-Red State down there to do it as well.
- Jonas M Luster
I think that's a pretty high amount, but it's really lame that the petition is at a 7-11. How many times do you buy something at a 7-11 that even warrants a bag?
- Admiral Anika
I think charging for plastic bags is a great idea. I'd like to see our country completely wean itself off plastic bags.
- Jen (SquirrelGirl)
Bag Tax is a great thing. Taiwan has it and it has really cleaned up their entire country. Be conscientious.
- Bjorn Stromberg
not for 7-11. They mark up everything! Have you looked at the price of there TP or shampoo??
- BEX
That really *&()@'s me off - In Australia, all bags are about to be banned - and if u need a reusuable one, it's $1....Get over it people!!!! They should all be banned and people should deal with it...It's not that hard.
