"The deepening financial crisis could lead to a rise in the number of suicides, Samaritans warned. People facing unemployment, mounting debts and losing their homes could feel they have nowhere to turn, the charity said. It urged everyone to look out for family, friends and colleagues in the coming months and over the Christmas period. Research has shown that people who are unemployed are two to three times more likely to commit suicide than those with jobs. Men are more at risk than women and unemployment can lead to a range of problems, including anxiety, depression and low self-esteem."
