How Bloody Cool is that (sorry to swear but come on how many more ways can they provide for us to get our content, just awesome). PC, Mac, Itunes, High Def, Low Def, Iphone ready, transcripts, what excuses could we possibly have now for not being able to follow along?
- Groobers
I am so pumped about this!!! i have the iphone feed and it looks just superb on the phone! the apple tv feed is also great for watching in on the computer!
- Ed Dale
Subscribed to all the feeds they are just so useful, I no longer have to spend time downloading the files to my computer or trying to save the iPhone/iTouch version to iTunes. Love it information ready to go when you are ready to consume it gotta love that :)
- Groobers
"About 500,000 total people watched Apple (AAPL) announce the iPhone 3GS over live-streaming site Ustream. Those viewers spent an average of around 15 minutes watching 20 or so different Ustream feeds. Each feed featured a lay-over ad by default. Those numbers completely blow us away. Consider that during the week of June 1, Comedy Central drew 523,000 viewers during any given hour. Last we checked, Fox Business claims something like 6,000 simultaneous viewers. CNBC's Jim Cramer draws 300,000 on a good night."

I'm not really surprised - though at the time we thought we were watching the only stream from inside. By the end, our beleaguered - considering some of the complaints the poor guy had to put up with - streamer had about 20,000 people watching his stream. Thanks, Steve - you know who you are.
- MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
Do you know which streaming server software are they using?
- Gokcen Karan
I was watching it then I dropped it cause it kept going in and out but then I got to watch it as TWIT was streaming it to me through their stream. It was stream within a stream!

Can anyone tell me what the teams do for you in the 30dc. Does it really help to be a part of a team? If so how do you choose one that is right for you. What are you really looking for in joining a team?
Compatible people. Although you each work on your own project, team members can help keep you on track and answer your questions; together you can help each other test your sites and give opinions on what's working. What project they're working on is less important than whether working with them is fun for you. 8-) Of course, I could be wrong . . .
- LJF Wolffe
I also have found collaborating to be worthwhile... Working together, creating content for one another, cross promotion, etc. For example, everyone who is interested in joining our team is welcome, but we need people to be willing to help each other and share insights. It might not be advisable to "share" a project with a stranger, but if you know friends who are interested in the 30dc...
- Christopher Sentman
most people can lie to themselves quite easily. They might be white lies about why you "can't do" something. A LOT harder to have that accountability lodged with a third party. Do yourself a favour and make sure you have a team that will kick your bottom when you slack up...and you will, it's human nature for 95% of people!
- Allison
Thank you for all of your comments. Being a mom on everyone else's schedule I do have the tendency to get pulled away from my own scheduling. I do like being held accountable, it really helps out.
- Sandra
Do we have to sign up to it again, or are we automatically in if we did it last year anyone? I'm already getting dupe emails from Ed (30dc & 30dc+) & don't need them in triplicate :))
- Isha (Marysia)
Nothing that I know of has been said that we need to signup again. We should know soon though. I would think that they will just have the new ppl signup or all of our posts and all that information on the forum would be a 404 mess. Unless of course, with the site facelift they will be wiping the slate clean . Don't know?? Hmm...
- Ron"micronet"Harwood
Hope they tell us soon. :) I want to learn how to win prizes!
- Art Y.
I'm loving the countdown clock I keep going to the site just to listen to it ...with each tick tock I can feel my excitement and anticipation raising. Do you think when the alarm goes off the doors will be flung open we all stampede in dancing and singing along with fireworks and streamers and pink thongs being flung into the air in celebration...just wondering~G
- Groobers
Trouble was, I had several 30dc tabs open in Flock, trying to catch up with last year and they all went to the clock after a reload... I couldn't figure where all the static was coming from - just a bunch of clocks out of sync :)
- Martin Percival
Groobers, I want to see you throw your pink thong into the air :) I'll sing.
- Isha (Marysia)
Girls girls, behave now! But boy o boy if Groobers is like this on forums, I would love to see what she does after she's knocked off a few :-)
- Ritesh Lal
Follow Groobers on FF &/or on Twitter, & you'll smile every day.
- Isha (Marysia)
Isha mine would be more in the style of granny pants! look forward to hearing you sing though. Did you see the video on Ed's Blog http://tubbynerd.com/2009... notice the girl shoulder dancing (now that was a class video).
- Groobers
Im looking forward to the video - and what day is not just a bit more special with Journey blaring from the computer!!
- Ed Dale
I'm looking forward to preseason and I just couldn't resist this bit of fun (just for you Isha hope this gives you a good old laugh... us old farts still have it ...well we try anyway!) I did not know you could put videos on flickr is this new? http://ff.im/3AGiN
- Groobers
Love your vid Groobers :)) Am not the best singer in the world but I'll do my best for you ;)
- Isha (Marysia)
I'm thinking of starting up a team for this year to work on the music making mega-niche. The aim eventually would be to have a membership site for people learning how to sing, play, write etc with a team to provide content, answer questions, make videos etc and promote the site. But first we start with the phrases. Let me know if you are interested.
I'm an artist...a singer (amongst other things :) and what you're thinking of doing sounds fabulous @Andy ! Would love to hear more - Blessed light
- Aline Ohannessian
Could be fun, but also serious. We're looking for musicians, tutors, voice trainers, lyric writers, that sort of thing.
- Andy Roberts
@andy. msg me. I'm a producer and musician - been at it my whole life. Have written for KD Lange and a few other popular Canadian artists - and countless CD producer credits. I run a studio in Singapore right now but wanted to get involved in a music niche myself :).
- Peter Gibson
hey Andy, sounds like something we discussed last year. I'd be keen.......come a long way since then
- Craig
Great to hear from you again @Craig let's catchup on last year's phrase and take it forward together again.
- Andy Roberts
Cool @Andy..... Check out that lens you linked to, will see I've created a few more key phrase lenses just a week ago, one is starting to rank well already.....I look forward to a bit of a live chat.....done nothing but eat, sleep and breath IM and SEO for the last year......
- Craig
I would be interested as well, and would love to hear more. I manage the internet marketing for a vocational school in Fremont, CA
- eric garrison
I'm using that wallpaper, looks so great!

Kevin: I doubt many people who have iPhones will be tempted to go with the Pre. But the Pre does have its charms. Keyboard, able to run multiple apps at the same time, etc. I'm actually wondering when I'll switch from iPhone to a Google Android-based phone.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, I love my iPhone (even with it's shortcomings) and could never see myself going to a Palm device. I've also thought about something with Google Android, if for nothing else for a native Gmail app. I guess I'll see how much the iPhone 3.0 firmware keeps me from making a switch.
- Kevin Whalen
from email
I have a G1 Android phone and I have grown to love it more every day, especially with the recent cupcake update. The Google Sky Map app alone would make me want the phone, but there are lots of other amazing apps as well. My main complaint is the G1 hardware, but future models are looking good, and the Rosie software branch looks sexy smooth.

In Honour/Honor of the Thirty Day Challenge 2009 for the month of June I have a new background, now my question is are you a Passionate Purple or a Crazy Pink or maybe your a Mix It up Mauve #30DCPS
The new Priuses are in. I got one of the first three that got into this dealer (Marin Toyota). I test drove it. Tons of geek toys. The lane keep assist is a trip (uses a camera to keep you in the lane and wakes you up with an alarm if you go out of bounds).
- Robert Scoble
such mixed feelings robert - happy for you to get something new that you are excited about, but bummed that you bought a new car instead of a used one... course I still want a ride. :)
- Jeremy Toeman
SO jeals! ^_^ drove a 2008 prius not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised: a great car ~ congrats!
- Kayce Maisel
heads up, the batteries in that vehicle do a tremendous amount of harm to the environment when it comes time to dispose of them & the amount that you save at the pump is also going to end up going towards the cost of replacement batteries at a future date, you should have really purchased a Jetta TDI they get around the same milage and you have to deal with fewer downfalls & you can even run biodiesel in if you like
- Dave T
from IM
WOW... after that comment, I could just about write anything here :)
- Fred Garrett
you don't plan to use the "lane keep assist" to help you do emails on your iphone do you?
- Marcel LeBrun
Solar panels FTW! My next car after my current lease is up with be a hybrid. I'm sure we'll make great strides in hybrid and battery technology in the next 2 years.
- Alex Knight
@Dave T Volkswagens are known to be horribly unreliable cars, while Toyotas (including the Prius) have proven reliability.
- Ben Kessler
Dave: we better learn to deal with recycling batteries.
- Robert Scoble
What about nuclear powered fuel cells for vehicles?
- Alex Knight
The battery issue is such a myth. They know exactly how to recycle the batteries in to new ones.
- Alex Scoble
Does anyone know if the 2010 Prius has improved suspension?
- Alex Knight
Does the lane keep assist, keep the new one out of the fast lane?
- Fred Garrett
Robert, you said the solar panel wasn't available on the top model? What model is it available on?
- Alex Knight
Alex: yes, improved definitely but it is no BMW.
- Robert Scoble
Well that much is obvious. As long as it's more interesting to drive. The old ones are pretty squishy.
- Alex Knight
A wind powered turbine that spins and creates reusable energy to power things in your car would be cool. Could mount it in front facing vents sucking in mass amounts of air when you drive.
- Alex Knight
Looks great. Now you just need to lower it and change the rims :P
- Arnold Aranez
Lowering the car will improve handling, but may affect fuel economy.
- Alex Knight
Alex: the solar roof is available on some of the top models but not on ones with the advanced technology package.
- Robert Scoble
It's a nice car with nice gadgets, but I just can't get excited about them.
- Mo Kargas
I'm jealous, mine's still on order - I probably won't get mine for at least another month. I have driven it and I agree: it definitely drives better than a Gen2.
- Paul Wilcox
Mo: gas prices are going up again. Makes me more excited. It is no Camaro in the looks department.
- Robert Scoble
That sounds like a car for me: "wakes you up with an alarm if you go out of bounds", 'cuz I'm always sleeping while I'm driving. No reazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- Robert J Taylor
@Robert Yeah I know and I can see I'll have to buy one soon myself, I just feel Toyota has descended into a 'whitegoods' era of totally unexciting vehicles/appliances. Great at being just cars, but no passion/excitement or style for me. I quite liked the Supra, wouldn't mind one of those as a hybrid
- Mo Kargas
Re: a few comments about evils of the battery... absolutely untrue, those batteris are 98% recyclable just like regular 12V battery, they are not dumped. Looks like many people still need to get educated. I'll keep my 2005 Insight 2-door (65 mpg) until it drops dead.
- Deborah Strickland
Solar panels aren't part of the *advanced technology package*?
- chad calease
Yeah, several of my parent's houses ago, it was a 70s vintage house with solar panels... so I guess you gotta get the "old skool" package to get solar panels.
- Wirehead
Congrats Robert! Can't wait to hear more about the car. It looks like a sweet ride!
- Michael Bazzoni
chad: no, the sun roof can't be put on cars with the advanced technology package. Only so much can be put into these things, I guess.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I don't think that alarm is there to make it okay to sleep while driving. Although knowing you and your sleep schedule that may be a good thing :)
- Jesse Stay
My 2002 Prius gets 44 mpg steady everywhere, The TDI site claims 30-41. And the new Priuses get more like 50. They are great cars, if utterly unflashy.
- Bob Morris (polizeros)
Nice, but I pegged you for a Tesla Model S guy ;)
- dougcoleman
Cool car! Recently bought a Toyota as well, but the Yaris maxed out with gadet as well - Loving every minute of it
- Asgeir
I want one. Those and the Nissan Cube Mobile Device are made for geeks, by geeks.
- Danny Minick
from BuddyFeed
What dougcoleman says. A Tesla would have made this thread a lot more interesting. Prius? Yawn.
- Gilbert Harding
Prius is Latin for “to go before,” suggesting it is a predecessor of cars to come.:-)
- John Brazel
You learn something new each day..............
- Kevin J Hatton
A Prius will be my next car, I'm excited by the fact that it's enjoyable to see how much gas you can save. Everyone I talk to says it's fun, trying to get the most out of a gallon of gas!
- Tdubya
In 2020 -people will look back at the Prius like a bad 80's fad and laugh. Remember when? ha ha ha.. People drive the Prius because they want to be seen driving a Prius. Why did Honda switch from a civic hybrid to a Prius clone? Because they couldn't sell the civic because it didn't look like a hybrid. Nobody want to drive a hybrid if other people don't know they are driving a hybrid
- gfurry
gfurry Does the hybird Lexus's look like a "typical" hybrids? I don't think so :) haha
- Asgeir
I'd rather have the Honda, sorry. That is if I were going to ever think of purchasing a car like this, which I probably won't. Talk about trendy righteousness!
- Andy
Robert: Great Car! It has very similar style with the new Tesla Model S Coupe which is not even available until late 2011.
- Garin Kilpatrick
gfurry: we also own a Highlander Hybrid. It doesn't look like a Prius. So there.
- Robert Scoble
I'd totally agree with you, gfurry, if not for the fact that the numbers don't back it up. 40% or so of all hybrid owners drive hybrids that don't look like hybrids: http://www.hybridcars.com/news...
- Ken Sheppardson
@Ben Kessler: Strangely the only VW's with a bad rep are the ones in the US. VW and especially diesels have a amazing record in Europe. I have an Audi [same group/mechanics] A3 (diesel) that has only ever had standard servicing and it's coming up to 190,000 miles and still runs like a dream getting me 45+ mpg. Do US VW's get put together in the US? Maybe that's the difference.
- 1x29
I hate my '03 Jetta. I think it came from the Mexico plant. Trunk latch busted (fixed), arm rest compartment busted twice (didn't bother fixing it the second time). A/C borked (took my '92 Camry 10 years before the A/C died, Jetta was 6). But most of my frustration should be on the dealership 'cause they didn't fix an electrical problem until innumerable times of towing the car in due to battery drain. And congrats Robert! Nifty car and environmental conscious! Someday the Prius will look like a sportscar.
- Arlan Koizumi
aww i thought you were going to wait for that tesla sedan
- Paul Stamatiou
So, what are the top 5 geek toys on this car (in addition to the lane keep assist)?
- Paola Bonomo
Brian: yup! Louis just left our house in his new BMW.
- Robert Scoble
Paola: my favorite thing so far is the cruise control. My iPhone's contacts all imported, though. The parking and lane assist features are cool. LED headlights. Satellite radio. Cool display is geeky.
- Robert Scoble
And here in India the corolla is the "latest" car. I envy you guys!

I've used it for link building, it's really pretty good. Thumbs up!
- Seang-Lim Tan
that is great, yes I'm also thinking of using it for link building
- Mitja MG
Mitja, I use both AMA and Unique Article Wizard, which is a similar service. AMA submits articles to blogs, and UAW to article directories. UAW gives nearly twice the NUMBER of backlinks as AMA. Some say that the Google weighs AMA links higher because they come from blogs rather than article directories. AMA is ~$50/mo. and UAW $70/mo. Review both and see what fits your needs best (Ideally both!) Worth the money IMHO :)
- Ritesh Lal
that is interesting, thanks for info Retish Lal
- Mitja MG
I have AMA and have over 2400 backlinks in a couple of months from 14 articles at the moment. Onearticle has been reprinted 117 times so far in unique formats. Well worth the money
- Graham Hunt
I mention this same thing in my last post on here not 20 minutes since. Coupled with some other optimisation, I think it will work well. there is a PRO version that will probably bring you better results. I am testing it now on a new blog.
- san
The free plugin is a list builder. No details..just give me your email address and get this free plug in.. Thats the reason I am not trying it. It will work with WPD..all plug ins do. You just have to manually add them through your website host c panel.
- Brian McClure
I tried this meta-plugin last week and it seems to work OK. It just makes it a bit easier to install a basic set of plugins on a new blog and tweaks a few settings. You could use it instead of WPD. Works well with Wordpress 2.8 which is worth a try too.
- Andy Roberts
remember anything you sign up for you can unsubscribe to straight away... nothing wrong with being a looky-loo (though it's call business research for those that want to be professional about it)

Thanks for all of your comments. They all help. I think I just might wait until I use Wordpress 2.8.

I may need to get a new laptop soon... So, just wanted to hear the general consensus. Should I get a PC or a Mac? =) I do so like the looks of iMovie, and iWork 2009. But a lot of software seems to be incompatible with Mac. Has anyone had any problems in this area? Which would be a better choice for what situation? What should I buy?
I always hear Ed raving about Macs, and I did use a Mac Leopard at work before, but I don't really know the ins and outs of them. I've mostly been using Windows all my life. The only reason I would buy a Mac type laptop right now would be because I want to use iWork 2009... Are there any other reason I should want one?
- Art Y.
Now you can have MacOSX on a PC and Windows on a Mac, so it only comes down to performance. Obviously, OSX works better on Mac and windows works better on a PC. If you are into video production for example, doing it on a Mac is the way to go, audio, image and text production will work good enough on a 'Hackintosh'. Same goes for windows software and Macs
- Jorge Blanco
Oohh... I forgot that you could do that... thanks for reminding me Jorge. Do you know if it's convenient to have two OS on a single laptop?
- Art Y.
You even have a choice, lucky you, Go stand out there, Macs the one. I cant afford one yet! My Daughter has one and she moved out and took it with her. Now I cant borrow it. Dont listen to any one elses opinion just buy one and you will never ever regret it.....Bruce Stewart
- Bruce.d.Stewart
It all depends on your storage capacity. It is not so difficult to do a dual (or triple or whatever) boot. The only limiting factor is the HDD space, each OS will take 10 - 20 GB plus the documents. If you can afford it, an OSX, Windows dual boot MacBook might be the best choice. Given that you can get a big enough harddrive
- Jorge Blanco
PLEASE!!! PLEASE!! Do yourself a favor Art.....Buy a MAC. I have been working with computers for TWENTY years, exclusively on a PC. Last year I started playing with my girlfriends MacBook so I could see what this little "toy" was all about. Long story short, I am typing this on my MacBookPro that I should have purchased TEN years ago. I still have PC's around the house, mostly to laugh...

Art, you will not be sorry if you buy a mac, compatability is a very very limited issue and if so far out-wayed by the benefits it's not worth mentioning All you need to do is purchase Office for Mac and the rest will fall be into place.
- Deano @ Byron New Media
I have both a PC and an iMac. It all depends on what you want to do, I do a lot of web/application development and find I'm more productive on my PC. However I enjoy using the Mac for image browsing, video watching, and just general surfing. And I find the Mac to be much more stable and user friendly. You can also run windows on a mac (though I don't recomend it), which would get rid of any software compatibility issues.
- Chris Linseman
O...k.... It seems everyone says Mac, so I guess Mac it is then... Thanks all! I guess I won't really understand what you all are trying to convey in words until I buy one and use it for myself. So... Does anyone have any suggestions for a good Mac-type laptop? I don't really know much about Macs, and I would like one that has quite a lot of hard disk space. preferably over 400 GB? A...

One word, imovie. Get a Mac. I changed three months ago and would never go back. Only probs I have had are things like Comment Kahuna doesn't work on a Mac so my sadly neglected PC gets some work. Well happy about getting mine.
- Graham Hunt
If you like Mac buy one. There is open source software out there that will run another operating system in a window on whatever operating system you are using. Sun Microsystems has such software. It is free. It is called Virtual Box and will work on Linux, Mac or Windows. Here is my experience with the program: I installed Ubuntu Linux on my computer a while back. Just recently I found...

- Michael Schofield
VirtualBox is great, I use often, but since it is run from inside another OS, it cannot achieve the same performance as a non-virtual OS installation. I use it mainly just for testing purposes.
- Jorge Blanco
If you can afford it, buy a mac hands down. I'm using both at the moment, but far prefer the mac. Was planning on getting a PC laptop, but I don't think I can walk away from a Macbook (oh how I'd love a Macbook pro) - BTW a year ago I was windows only
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
@ Case - haha I seem to offend people a lot now by laughing at their PC's (or abusing them when I'm trying to use them)
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
Ok. I'll get a Mac then... What type of MacBook is the best for it's price right now? Does anyone know? And is a MacBook compatible with any type of hardware (mouse, etc.), or do you need hardware from Apple?
- Art Y.
I stayed out of this - and I see my work is done!
- Ed Dale
If you want to be a content creator - the only smart choice is a mac. Imovie 09 ALONE is astounding - many of my pro editing video mates are using it to edit stuff and not tell their clients - it's that good
- Ed Dale
I've worked on both pc and mac...the moment I bought my first mac (11years ago now - it was the PowerBook then) I will never own or choose a pc - there I've said it :) mac is Fantabulous all around and in side out! P.S.hope you choose the right one for You! :)
- Aline Ohannessian
I'm feeling some overwhelming pressure to get a MacBook here... :S Lol. Ok. Ok. I'll definitely get one... Thank you everyone for all your comments. However, I think I need to save up some funds first... Just looked up the prices, and it seems Macs are like Lamborghini aren't they? I don't think I can do it alone. Anyone else want a MacBook Pro, and want to form a team so we can earn...

Just worried people we send along might be confused by all these 'derivatives' PS Thanks for all the great learning opportunites of 30D !

Is Ed some kind of God? He blesses his followers and magic happens! Ok let me explain. Just a week ago, I bought a domain name, put up a home page with opt-in and optimized it for a keyphrase. All other pages of the site are dummy pages with content like "Lorem Ipsum blah blah..." I didn't even bookmark or write ANY other content for the site yet
I was planning to start working on this site next week. So imagine my surprise, when aweber starts sending me emails that people are signing up from my homepage! I was like, WTF! So I decided to investigate where are people finding out my site from, since I had done no publicity, submissions, bookmarking etc. And then I discover my site is ranking #9 on its own. Man, if this doesn't tell you that even half baked 30DC practices work, then what will! Unbelievable :-) I can't wait to see my competition being demolished when I bring out the big guns from Imm Edge and start applying those tricks here :-)
- Ritesh Lal
Hmm, finally had to put in an autoresponder email telling my subscribers that the site is not open yet, and is still in test mode etc. :-)
- Ritesh Lal
sounds like a very pleasent surprise :)
- Chris Linseman
Thats fantastic - looks like you've found a great keyword and seems you've got persuasive writing down too! Best of luck to ya!
- Elizabeth
You are awesome! I haven't been able to rank on page one for any of my sites so far. =( There was one, but it took me months, and not minutes. =P The conclusion is, my keyword research skills need more fine tuning... Would you happen to have any advice Ritesh for choosing easy keywords that can get you ranked on page one in a day or two?
- Art Y.
Don't be disheartend Art Y. The first project I did during 30DC 2008, took me 2 months. And then I found out that I had messed up differentiating between phrase and broad match traffic (this was early days of Mkt Sam, with no PBR data). So now even though my first site ranks #1-3 depending on google's mood, I still barely get 30 visitors/day :-( Well, live and learn :-). NO real secrets...

Thanks for the advice Ritesh =) Hmm... actually to be honest, I've been... targeting keywords with SEOC less than 5000, and still can't really manage to rank as fast as most people do... Considering that the SEOC is so low, and the Competition module is mostly made up of greens and yellows, there must be something more to keyword selection than this that I haven't really grasped yet.....

No, I always felt istockphoto was a rip off. They sell images for $1, $3 or $5 there. The Getty thing seems interesting because they charge a lot more.
- Thomas Hawk
Nice start, Thomas. It'll take 'em ages to pile through all your pictures :D
- Bob M. Montgomery
yeah, I was late to get an invite but I've heard from others that once you submit they typically come back to your stream and look for more images. I have some reservations about doing this still, but I think it will be interesting to experiment with it and see how it goes.
- Thomas Hawk
maybe Ken. Just never thought pricing images that low was a good idea though. At least not for me personally.
- Thomas Hawk
We buy a lot of images for our newsletters. Could never afford the Getty prices however.
- Ken Morley
Congratulation! This makes me want to work harder "to be just like Tom".
- Vinko
yeah, I think Istock definitely serves a market and opens up stock photography for a lot more uses than maybe in the past.
- Thomas Hawk
Absolutely fantastic images...congrats Thomas!
- Susan Dennis
nice work, whats the association between flickr and getty? I'm soon to submit myself. your stuff is great!!
- Leeanne Munn
Leeanne, thanks. Flickr and Getty have partnered to allow Getty to pilfer, er, I mean pull from Flickr's library of images to offer many of them for sale at Getty Images. The new Flickr collection on Getty launched last month. http://www.gettyimages.com/creativ...
- Thomas Hawk
fgood for you Thomas....be really interested in results and your perspective as this goes forward
- Richard Binhammer
nice to see you on FriendFeed David. For those of you who don't know David he's a Bay Area pro photographer who's been in the business for a long time. My pal Sam Bloomberg-Rissman used to work for him. http://beta.friendfeed.com/davidsa... a good person to follow if you are interested in photography and the business side of photography especially.
- Thomas Hawk
thanks for the reply, do you submit to getty or do you just wait for an invite?? hope it all goes well for you.
- Leeanne Munn
You have to wait for Getty to invite you. I think it would be better if they allowed people to submit, but for now you have to wait for their invitation on Flickr.
- Thomas Hawk
of course some of these photos are simply stunning.
- R. Ferguson
Robert, that shot of the GG Bridge was from our very first episode of Photowalking. It's still one of the most popular photographs of the GG Bridge on Flickr.
- Thomas Hawk
Gorgeous work! Keep everyone posted on how this works out.
- Rick Bucich
Simon, Getty basically pays 20-30% (probably more like 20% for me) on sales in this program. Pretty skinny for the photographer if you ask me. But we'll see how well they do selling them to make up for that.
- Thomas Hawk
It's not cost you anything to have them in their program though has it? Anything you make is a bonus if thats the case, and it gets you more recognition. :)
- Simon Wicks
right Simon, no cost to be in the program. But the terms still seem a bit one-sided to me. a low payout, a requirement that you give them a three year exclusive on these image or images substantially like these images. I'd rather have seen more like a 40-50% payout on images and a shorter one year exclusive which could be renewed after that, especially given that the program is new and nobody really has any datapoints on what it will look like. But opening up Getty to more amateurs still is admirable.
- Thomas Hawk
Ah right, so techically they own the images now? You cant sell it to any other sites to make a profit from those too. Shorter leases would of been much better in that case, as like you said, you dont know what return you are going to get from them.
- Simon Wicks
well technically you still own the images. But you just can't market them through anyone else for that term. So if say someone emails you after finding your image on say Flickr and wants to pay you $1,000 for it you can't take it. Instead you can send them to Getty and get more like $40. They also won't recognize the cc non-commercial license which I don't like and will only market images previously marked CC non commercial as the lower paying royalty free. Which I don't like.
- Thomas Hawk
Just wondering: If you have an image on Getty and someone wants to buy it externally (like you $1000 example via mail), wouldn't it be as easy as making a simple change to your raw image and then sell the new one (which looks almost exactly like the one on Getty)? Does Getty own the right of your raw image? Or do they own the rights of a whole series of shots (that may be looking all the same)? I think they wouldn't like it, but in fact this would be ok, wouldn't it?
- Pascal Hertleif
Pascal, they lay claim to "similars" and their definition of "similars" is somewhat nebulous and subjective. You always own the copyright (for sake of this discussion). They (Getty) have an exclusive license that you grant them for a period of 2 years that is irrevocable during that timeframe. I.e. you can't change your mind 2 weeks after you grant them license and ask Getty to delete the image. You can ask them to stop licensing it out but since they still own the exclusive license, it still prevents you
- Jauder Ho
from selling elsewhere except for "fine art" prints. And yes, the terms seem to be stacked against the photog.
