I have the usual emergency kit but for as for unusual items, I have a bed sheet, a tatami mat, and an unopened package of window blinds. The bed sheet is to cover the windshield if it's going to freeze overnight and I need to drive early the next morning. The tatami mat is for the beach. It has nothing to do with photos - most of my avatars are ridiculous. The one I'm using right now on FF looks like a melted mini-fig and my Facebook photo was my 4th grade yearbook picture for a long time. Photoshopped Barbizon photos of yourselves 1. makes you look like you're trying too hard and 2. why would you want to attract someone who adds (friends?) you for the way you look anyway?

Note the pictures of (what to me look like) perfectly decent-looking guys who were rated low. It would be interesting to see how female perception of male attractiveness is itself distributed for a particular photo, and also how much of it is photo presentation and how much is "native" attractiveness (which you'd measure by, I dunno, calling people in for a professional makeover and photo shoot?).

But yes, standardized presentation would help. Actually, I thought psychologists did use that to measure attractiveness. (total sidebar:averaging out photos of average-looking people produces a composite that is probably a good bit more attractive than any individual component since the averaging process itself smooths out "flaws".)

The first time someone calls you, they have to sit through a number of rings on your phone, a ring or two on GV, at which point the GV lady picks up, asks you to announce yourself, THEN sends you to voicemail. Thank you for serving up this good food for thought and call for action! Here is a meme that might be helpful for the effort - while "FriendFeed: the Company" may be history ... "FriendFeed the Concept" may be the future. It may make as good a verb as it does a noun - like "to google" has become synonymous with search, "to friendfeed" can become the core SN function. Maybe some motivation for FF owners to guide their legacy to this logical conclusion.

If I were worried about the servers being turned off I'd stop using this as an aggregator too. Right now I'm bringing all my Twitter Favorites in here which makes them searchable (they aren't searchable on Twitter). That's a HUGE advantage to FriendFeed for the moment. But I know Facebook and Twitter are working on search and Twitter and Facebook just made a deal with Bing.

Lots of reasons...being "crazy-busy", selling out to Facebook scattering some of us to the winds (I hang out at StumbleUpon more than here these days), and sometimes it just cycles. I asked a similar question months ago and likes and comments on my stuff increased for a while and then tapered off again. There is only so much time and we all do what we can to spread ours around.

I think some think that it's a bad idea Tsega because FF represents a *vastly* superior content platform than Facebook and some might be concerned that Facebook would end up killing FF as we know it and trying to assimilate us all into their inferior product.

there was no "long run" to save FF from financially. It's Founders are loaded. They had the luxury of ample financial backing to run it for a long, long time. It will be interesting to see their reasoning on why they did this if in fact it is true.

For me, FF and FB have two separate purposes: FB is for communicating with my IRL friends and FF is for consuming and sharing content with everyone else, but then I've been on FB since it was select universities only, so maybe I have an outdated opinion of what FB is. They need to keep both products.

chances are FF will be nuked. There's not much in it for Facebook to run two separate networks. The wording that Bret chose to use on the blog pretty much paints that case in my opinion. FF is worth so much more for it's potential than for it's users and I think Facebook wouldn't care if they lost 100% of the current users if they get unfettered access to implement the best tech ideas into their current product.

The team will probably be locked into a 2 year employment with Facebook while their equity fully vests and then will end up jumping ship. This acquisition will likely make Facebook a little bit better, but we probably lose FF in the process which is too bad.

Agree with many of the comments on here. I'm concerned Facebook will basically just take all of FriendFeed's great properties and fold it in the large kingdom that is Facebook. A great service, FriendFeed may just become FB's Twitter. (Funny, too, that we're mourning the potential demise of FriendFeed on FriendFeed. Kind of like the newspaper biz writing 1000s of articles about its own demise in its papers.

Good point. It could have taken the destination language from browser preferences too (I hate it when they - Google products - do it, but they do it for interface language sometimes anyway)

When I asked someone on the team, they said it was because there were still some issues with language detection in a few cases, so they were staying with the most popular language pair as default.

I guess it's related to usage as others said, as for myself most of the times I used Google Translate was for Spanish to English.

@maplestar: Scott, in the ugly situations when one's forced to bump Russian prio to be able to write Cyrillic e-mails via Outlook WebAccess, and gets 'localized' web sites as a side effect - I'm not sure it's quite THAT point people had in mind when developing the whole idea :)

Even if detect language is buggy (which it certainly is with short queries) it should go to the last language used. I live in a German speaking country and the "most popular" pair is irrelevant. I need german to english every time.

My least favorite translate behavior: if you accidentally try to translate something from, say, English to English, translate will give you an error, rather than just redirecting to the page. So punitive.
