they're hounds. hounds are generally smart busybodies with some energy...though not jack russell style energy. we had a stray beagle become the neighborhood dog back in the day. she would come visit us at the bus stop, and she would say hi to my mom... but then somebody took her :-(. she was sooooo sweet and good with us kids. - tiffany

@todd: we got to see Gollum wrestle with it during his debates with himself, in the film especially. The exchanges he had with his reflection in the water was a strong example of how one can use ego to stay focused to acquisition and ownership at any cost. How ego plays with fear, lust and our sense of entitlement to drive us toward action we might not normally take. - RPM

Interesting. When I see Gollum I think Id. Frodo is the ego. And Samwise is the superego. You are right that Gollum is more interesting than I gave him credit for. I agree with your assessment of the three characters and the definition of id, ego & superego. As it relates to my conversation with my Dad, the topic of Gollum came up when we stumbled upon how when moving beyond the notion of "self preservation," the ego goes from a behavior management mechanism to a way to defend and support self destructive behavior. Once he stumbled into darkness, Gollum's ego worked to keep him there with the staunch justification of his actions, no matter the result. - RPM
