I don't have either, but my brother has both, and he seems to always go with the PS3 version. I'll have to ask him why.
- Victor Ganata
The graphics on the PS3 will out-perform those on XBox only if the game has been optimised for the PS3 hardware – which is usually not the case when it's released on both platforms at once. Also, the XBox Live online community is larger than the Playstation's so for multiplayer games you might want it on XBox as well. I say all this as a Sony fanboy, but I'm realistic.
- kaigani
Depends on the game but most likely Xbox for Xbox live
- Rodfather
from Android
My PS3 can emulate an Xbox 360 anytime. I just press the Off button. :P
- Ade
Live older than PSN, it means more user, and friend invite to game. at live once you buy a game you can download it countless time, but at PSN it is limited. and also cross gaming chat,
- siniradam
Wait, isn't PSN free while XBox Live isn't? (In terms of online multiplayer gaming, specifically.)
- Victor Ganata
PS3 uses less energy to operate then the XBox, food for thought.
- Heather
Well, now I know why my brother prefers the PS3.
- Victor Ganata
Yep Xbox is expensive compared to the PS3 if you total up Xbox Live and any extras you need (like the wireless adapter that you get as standard with the PS3).
- Kol Tregaskes
I'll give some examples of games I would like on the Xbox that are also on the PS3: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Brutal Legend, Colin McRae: Dirt 2, FIFA 10, Ghostbusters, Needs for Speed: Shift, SIlent Hill: Homecoming, WET and Assassin's Creed 2. Which format would you buy these in?
- Kol Tregaskes
The only one I can comment on is Batman, which had additional content on the PS3, so I'd recommend getting that version.
- kaigani
@Heather The PS3 energy usage is higher than the Xbox 360s according to NDRC; I think it was the Wii you are thinking of that's lower.
- Wade Dorrell
Wade is that the PS3 or PS3 Slim which has better energy usage?
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol That study (http://arstechnica.com/gaming...) compared a couple revisions of both consoles but didn't include the PS3 slim nor recent 360 revisions. So I don't know.
- Wade Dorrell
Ah OK, would be interesting which is better. I believe it's the PS3 Slim.
- Kol Tregaskes
Multiplayer games: Xbox. Anything else, usually the PS3. I'm still a fan of the PS style controllers, but online multiplayer is so much better on the Xbox. (And yes, totaled up, my Xbox was about $150 more expensive than my PS3, and it still doesn't do Blu-ray.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
Jennifer, I think that's a good shout about MP games.
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol I'd bet latest rev of the 360 and the PS3 slim are about equal, based on a couple estimates for the slim & estimates for the Falcon rev 360. (1 rev before the current Jasper rev.) The internets don't seem to have done a conclusive test yet for some reason. If I had a Japser-rev Xbox 360 & a PS3 Slim (I have neither) I'd grab the Kill-A-Watt and get measuring. :)
- Wade Dorrell
Xbox for Live, Achievements and I also prefer the Xbox controls.
- Jemm
Anyone have experience with Xbox vs PS3 wireless controllers? Does one work better than the other for different room play. E.g. your game box is in a central closet, and you play the games from different rooms. Also, is it even possible to use a Wii from different rooms?
- Cristo
Chris, if you had to make a guess, Xbox controllers use RF and PS3 uses bluetooth. I'm not sure which reaches further or through certain objects better. Wii controllers also use bluetooth.
- Rodfather
Rodfather, I think the problem with the Wii is they have wired receivers they want mounted directly above or below your TV. Problems are 1) You wouldn't want to have to put that special purpose cable in the wall to different rooms. 2) You only have one plug into the Wii for the remote receiver, so you'd need a multi-plug to single plug adaptor, which seems unlikely to exist. 3) I'm not aware of any general purpose bluetooth repeaters/converters that could be used with the Wii receiver.
- Cristo
Since the Xbox controller is RF, it doesn't care about where you are, as long as you are within range. (About 30 feet is what I've read). Of course, this might change with Project Natal. I don't have any experience with PS3, so other than it using Bluetooth, I don't know if there are any other restrictions.
- Cristo
PS3, only 3% breakdown rate. Atleast you don't get the Ring of Deaths, I got tired of getting my 360 replaced until I got my loved PS3. Now I can play Modern Warfare without any pain.
- Faraz Mullick
The sensor bar can be hacked to be battery powered. All that's in there is a few IR LED's to help the Wii controller. You can even use a pair of candles to simulate the same effect of the sensor bar. As for #3, well, if it's too far, then you're screwed anyway.
- Rodfather
PS3. Xbox controller looks like too much work
-
Rodfather, interesting about the battery powered sensor bar.
- Cristo
What do you think of in-game advertisements? Good or bad thing? If we have to have them how would you like them in games? Product placements? And how much of it?
Guerilla ones could suck big time, but dynamic in game ads in billboards or cars should be fine.
- Acharad Sami vanJoulee
As long as it makes sense within the context of the game. I wouldn't want to see a big McDonald's ad in the middle of, say, Dragon Age II.
- Akiva Moskovitz
when i saw an ad in a shooter game, im shooting it.
- siniradam
I think my games should cost me much less then.
- CW™
Looks like they are going for realism. Corporations have taken over the world!
- Eric @ CS Techcast
I depends. I'll accept them in racing games if they look real, but with CW, definitely should be cheaper if games have ads in them. And I find that the games that do have ads in them, I don't play as much.
- Anika
Stupid, not working idea. [Check out Ian Bogost's "Persuasive Games" for further details]
- Kurai (ff)
If they make sense within the game, I'm ok with them. There are billboards all over Burnout: Paradise and they fit into the game's cityscape. I remember Crackdown, while also being set in a city like Burnout, having ads for a vehicle that is decades old in that game's world. That took me out of the game a bit.
- Rob H.
On a billboard like the first one's not an issue for me. The second one's a bit overkill. But yeah, if it makes sense in the game. Fantasy games, historical games, not so much.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
in NFS there is a lot. well it is making the game realistic. i mean like football every football game has own ads. in the game. but in the future it could be disturbing.
- siniradam
Point is, no one will notice those, because attention is on the game. And no one will buy a product just because it's advertised on a game. But still, marketing will do the equation copies of the game sold -> increase in the sales. Funny.
- Kurai (ff)
As long as it makes sense in context and is subtle enough to not be annoying, then fine.
- Tanath
Tanath, agree. Just use some intelligence in integrating them. The first shot is good in that it's an advertising board and it's clearly been built into the game's engine. Unlike the (probably edited) second shot with has lots of ads that have the stuck-on look.
- Kol Tregaskes
Kurai, that doesn't seem to stop companies from advertising in movies, TV or even the clickable ads that no one clicks.
- Rob H.
The point of advertising is to reduce or cover the cost of something. It's why tv shows have ads, and why ad slots cost different amounts depending on how many people are expected to be watching. With something you have to pay for the ads should created with that in mind, that they are being purchased and constitute double income. No one is going to buy something where ads are distracting and take away from the experience, and if ads are there it should cut the cost of the game.
- Heather
+1 Kol, if they put them in like #1, I don't have a problem with it.
- Jason Huebel
An interesting aside to this is whether or not ads should be dynamic. I heard a story on the radio a few months ago about some new games (I don't game much, so I haven't paid much attention) actually downloading and swapping out the ads over Internet connections (so that the ads are always current and new). Is that okay? Does that turn a video game effectively into adware? Should we...

Back on-topic, though, I'm fine with ads in games as long as they fit with the story and scenery. I expect to see ads plastered all over a NASCAR game, but would find it a bit ridiculous in Zelda. For me, part of the thought process would be: if they would have put a fake advertisement in that spot (billboards on racing/city games, for instance), why not make a little extra money and sell real adverts for that spot?
- Curtiss Grymala
Curtiss, I can't remember what game I was just playing that had current ads in it, but somewhere in the game was a theatre marquee and it was showing Paranormal Activity. I thought it was kind of cool, actually, that the ads were so up-to-date and relevant. And, I mean, it worked within the game, because it was a theatre marquee. It made sense for it to show something, why not a currently-playing film?
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
If I am honest I would only like them if the game was free or cheap - I absolutely hate buying a DVD and having ads forced on me, and too much product placement would really annoy me. I even dislike the little studio/production ads they force you to watch at the beginning of films and games, I want to get to the film or game, not watch pointless logo animations for every company involved. Sorry :)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I don't mind ads that look like part of the landscape (as Kol pointed out for the first ad), for games that are ostensibly in something like this universe. I love the fake ads in games like Ratchet & Clank, and think it would be very jarring to insert a Wal-Mart ad into that universe.

What will happen to the pre-owned market when digital downloads become the norm? Should we be able to sell our digital downloads like we can we our old wares?
People are still buying landline phones. This will be a gradual process
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
Johnny, of course. Landlines are a long way off from dying off. I would say physical boxed games/music/movies have a slightly shorter life.
- Kol Tregaskes
The pre-owned market will be around beyond our life times. Why? Because you have a ton of people who will want to own those games from our time and before. You still have people buying Atari 2600 games. It may not be huge for Gamestop, but personally I don't care what happens to Gamestop because as a company they suck. And I can say that because I used to work for them.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
The same way digital downloads are killing the DVD Market? My point is not everyone lives on the bleeding edge and not all moms can afford $90 for a new game. It has a long tail filled with young kids and casual gamers
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
And people like me still want to buy physical media. I personally would rather buy a game, dvd, cd, etc and then put it on whatever device and have the physical copy on the shelf.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Johnny, agree but that wasn't the question. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol - No, we shouldn't be allowed to sell our digital downloads, as there would be no real way to ensure we had removed all traces of them. That said, digital downloads should be considerably less expensive (notice I said should) than the physical media, as the manufacturing and material costs will be virtually nil.
- Curtiss Grymala
Curtiss, you forget about the added cost of digital downloads. Servers and bandwidth. That will keep the cost pretty even.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
If tied to an account, it would be nice to transfer the license of a game to another
- Rodfather
I agree physical games will probably exist for a long time, just like vinyl and the aforementioned Atari 2600 games. But collectors aside, downloads will form the largest part of movie, game and music purchases I think (source: my crystall ball). It is an interesting question whether you'll be able to sell'm. On the one hand I think you should be able to do that, but on the other hand...

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has become the PlayStation 3's standout exclusive -- vastly outpacing the original in terms of hype, review scores, and positive buzz. The game has, in its first month of release, sold over a million copies. The team at Naughty Dog has spent a great deal of effort making sure that the game is better than the first in the series, which debuted in 2007 to very positive reviews -- and that the lead character, Nathan Drake, is better-developed."

Or what recent releases do you want to get your hands onto? For me it's Assassin's Creed 2 mainly. But we have the Sims 3 pack, Dirt 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and (if I get a PS3) I might have a looksee at GT5.
- Kol Tregaskes
Assassin's Creed II, but I'll probably rent it. My most looked-forward to game right now is Mass Effect 2, but they pushed it back to next year. Recent releases...Tad keeps talking up Dragon Age, so I'd like to check that out, but I'm still working on Borderlands. Hell, I'm still working on freakin' Fallout 3. And GTA IV, if we want to go back that far. I play games really slowly. :)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
the sad thing: i must go look at a release list to figure out if there is anything coming out from my most wanted list - course I have no console only PC atm.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Mass Effect 2 not out here till 29th January I think.
- Kol Tregaskes
not much that I can tell for the PC - all the goodies are already out, or February/March
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
None. I'm playing Dragon Age now and I still have to finish MW2 and Halo:ODST and will eventually move onto some random DLC for other games. I'm pretty much full of gaming until Mass Effect 2's release.
- Rob H.
I already have enough games to go though as it is. :p

I'm basically only into platformers and party games, so about the only one I can think of that I know is coming out soon (or just came out, not sure) is the new Sonic and Mario at the Winter Olympics.

He said the division has a full pipeline of content, which he presented in the slide pictured here. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the Citizen Kane of repeatedly shooting people in the face. The storyline makes less sense than a gas ladder, but in terms of technical achievement, this is an undoubted masterpiece. The visuals, the soundtrack, the level design, the game mechanics … they're all second to none, and they work together to create something that's not so much a videogame as a borderline nightmare experience. The phrase "an assault on the senses" doesn't come close: it's thrilling, immersive, sometimes scary, always exciting, and occasionally downright overwhelming."
