Those stories are always infuriating. On a trip a few years ago I was forced to check a carry-on that was deemed to large, and surprise surprise the baggage handlers walked off with my valuables. Never again. - Tom Harrison
I agree with Tom. Camera gear is particularly valuable and I can't help but have a decently-sized carry-on to carry the gear and my MacBook Pro. My bag's too big? Fine. Check the bag. Now, give me a plastic bag to put all my gear in. Small enough for you?? Haha. - Fernando
I've had my check in baggage looted twice in the last 6 month. Both times unlocked but they broke the clasps opening it anyway... - Joi Ito via twhirl
My rule is: Never Check Anything. So far, it has worked. - Dave Roth
Send anything valuable via fedex or ups. Never let the airlines or the TSA get their hands on your stuff. I had a signed first edition looted from my bag a few years ago. I've never checked anything since. Carry-on or courier. - Kevin D. White
FedEx is the great secret weapon of folks who like to travel light. (and can plan ahead) - Michael Markman via Alert Thingy
Amen! I'm reading onebag.com as we speak. The new job I'm applying for will have 50-60% travel, and I'm planning some of this stuff now. - Harvey Simmons
Travel is not required for my job. Since munchkin #2 came along I've only flown once and that was 3 years ago. Must say that the horror stories out there about security snafus and outright crime are a definite turn off for travel. There's no way me and the fam could fly without 1) checking a crap load of stuff; and 2) carrying on more than most would believe. Try lugging 2 toddlers, 2 car seats, and the other logistical crap too. I can't even imagine getting by with the restrictions on liquids (juice boxes) - Geoff Longman
