Facebook was looking to implement more of a public twitter-style thing, but a lot of users didn't like that it seemed to be making private conversations more public. If they could keep them separate in some ways, this could solve that. This could be the public facing side of Facebook. I think its a good thing.

Not sure how my friends on Facebook will appreciate all the added stuff in my stream if they decide to integrate like that. I wouldn't mind as long as the core friendfeed functionality is there. Along with the search, filters and group features. We'll see, though

It would be great if FB promote FF a lot as FF would get the millions and millions of users from FB. But surely FF will be integrated into FB at some point. I feel very sad atm. I hope I'm wrong.

imho, it's good for many reasons, both for FF and FB. Better integration, content based advertising (based on comments, discussion topics and demographics on FB account) etc. FB successfully established a networking platform, yet, still couldn't be able to establish a healthy conversation platform (look for the useless fan pages + groups). FF would do it. It may also be the end of forum culture, and so...

congrats to FriendFeed! facebook tried to mimic the service with real-time profile updates but the FF technology is apparently too good and UI too smooth that they had to buy it! I'd imagine facebook integrates the technology without using the Friendfeed name so as not to corrupt the native FF community with n00bs

@cavlec Friendfeed doesn't have privacy problems, because it doesn't have privacy. But it will be a challenge for fb/ff to merge their streams without making the ff stream too private and the fb stream too public.

I'm worried that FriendFeed will turn into a walled garden like Facebook. I'm also worried by Facebook's repeated attempts to take ownership of users' content. Plus they don't really have a reputation for responsiveness to user concerns.

Not sure just yet, I think it will bring more users, but I love the tools that FF provides, not sure that FB will be able to integrate FF into FB interface and still provide access to all the great features that FF offers now?

if FB bought FF is because they want to make money out of it. Therefore even if they keep it separate they will put ads on FF. But what I am most scared about is the proliferation of stupid applications and silly games with the only puprose of doing aggressive marketing.

I think it's a bad idea. Twitter is full of automatic spam and Facebook is full or redundant apps. We need an independent platform somewhere to hide from the clamor of social circuses

Advice Needed: I have to recommend a Sci-fi/Fantasy book to a 50+ year old woman who loves to read (20 books ever two weeks) but who has never read a Sci-Fi or fantasy book. She is fairly conservative and even used to be a Nun. She really likes mysteries and thrillers.
I'm looking for a suggested book that will give her a very positive introduction to the Genre so that she will return for more. So throw out your best advice.

Maybe Tamara Siler Jones? Set in a medieval Europe type setting, and they're basically police procedurals, with magic. 1st one is Ghosts in the Snow. Threads of Malice was a bit gory, though.

I have a Giant XTC mountain bike which has been used for both work and pleasure. I rode to work when living in Berkshire which was virtually all along a canal. I used to get out every weekend morning too to a ride around town but not done much since moving to Kent.

I have a Giant Defy road bike. I use it for pleasure. I am actually doing a ride this Sunday, and then a century ride on June 14th. My favorite place is this trail around here that is called the WO&D trail. It use to be train tracks that they turned into a trail.

Trek Navigator 3.0 (http://www.trekbikes.com/women...). It's a grandma bike, and is as slow as molasses, but I like it. I've added a basket to the front, a rack to the rear, and front/rear fenders. I use it to run errands and to ride to work when the weather's good. Favourite places to ride are the dikes in Richmond and Maple Ridge, BC. The flatter the better.

I just replaced my 20 yr old mongoose with a Trek 3900.... I love it. I live biking distance from Devil's Gulch and other sweet trails, even a nice paved 11 mile loop trail along the Columbia River. My town loves bikers.

I have a Fuji Nevada 3.5... which is really just the Fuji Police bike with the "POLICE" lettering covered up with a sticker. I bike to work and ride all over the silicon valley area for fun, starting to average over 100 miles per week.

Marin Pioneer Trail (2007), used mainly for leisure and errands around the home town. At the time it was the only bike I could find in stock anywhere that had a large enough frame, and I seriously love it. *Might* be picking up the '09 version later this year and then I can have this current one locked up at the station in London and use it to do the final leg to work each day.

2 years ago, I did 50 mile Tour de Tendring, in preparation for a charity bike ride from Colchester to Aylesbury (100 miles). I would like to do a 12 or 24 hour endurance mtb ride one day, but getting a group together is a bit tough.

Exercise is a pretty tough way to lose weight. Walking a mile burns 100 calories and candy bar has 200. Our hunter-gather ancestors burned about 700 calories more a day than we do so they could have absorbed the number of calories we eat, but it's easy for us to live with almost no work at all. Not an easy to deal with situation.

in people 14-25 that I know personally, I am seeing a pattern of severe reduction of amount eaten. maybe it's meaningless (too small sample size) but it seems like they are all near starving themselves (1200cal for 5'8" 160lb girl at age 17 for example)

it is a mistake to calculate the effect of exercise based solely on calories burned while performing the activity. it is also a mistake to publish an article about a scientific study without providing a reference to the study.

Starting the eggs in cold water, then boiling them is an old culinary trick - it cooks them more slowly, so the proteins don't coagulate as fast, leaving the boiled egg with a better texture. Taking this idea to its extreme, you can simply equilibrate an egg to 68C and it will be very soft, yet cooked through. This general idea can be applied to all cooking of proteins - low and slow makes it the most tender. The technique called sous-vide uses this idea.

We have separated Groups (the new name for "Rooms") into its own section, and we have renamed "filters" to "Saved searches" to make things simpler/clearer. Saved searches have simper URLs that can be shared, and friend list operations have all been added/cleaned up.

Nice, but I use filters (well, now saved searches) more than I do my friend lists. Personally I prefer it the way it was, although I'd be happy just to have filters bumped up some (I got a _lot_ of lists to scroll past).

I still think that the "My discussions" link under Friends should really be "My likes and comments", since there are some posts in that feed that are just ones I "liked" and have 0 comments, from me or anyone else. Would you call a post with no comments a "discussion"?

We have more consistent terminology now; good. Now can we have more sophisticated feed-composition tools? How about one-touch "create group from saved search"? And how about fixing the "private group - standard FEED - public group" inconsistency?

While the new sidebar order is good, I'm having fun getting rid of two saved searches which only bring up an "edit new filter/search page. It'd be nice to have some way to edit/delete searches, like with the groups and friends boxes. Still waiting for someone to give me a tip on how to remove those two links from the list otherwise.

George: Click the "Saved Searches" title, then select the feed from the left-hand side, then click Delete.

Peter, yep to me that's in completely the wrong place. It's the second most important new feature on FF (behind real-time) and it's now "hidden" at the bottom. I have a large list of Groups and means big scroll down to the Saved Searches, which I use a LOT. Please either return them back to the second tab down or give us the option to select what sidebars we have and what order they appear on the bar?

Bret, this is great, especially being able to see all of my groups. But I agree with just about everyone else, I'd prefer to have my saved searches above groups. There is still enough room to add subscriptions as well . . . maybe??

I like it, although the name filter was better, I think. Besides putting the Searches under Friends, it would be good if the Groups would change order in relation to recent activity, like it used to be.

I like the way things are separated, now. However, I too have a lot of lists to scroll past to get to groups and saved searches. It would be nice to move the saved searches and groups above the lists. Definitely loving the beta, though!

Hmmm.... I still cannot edit a list created from the "likes" of my friends. The UI doesn't allow me to manage the friend list. I cannot tell the likes to which I'm subscribed or add/remove others.

A number of feeds I set up are showing as Groups. Is that right? I set up a number of Twitter feeds (e.g. "Twitter - Al Yankovic") for nonFF Tweeters. It's a little confusing since now they're listed as a Group when their settings are "Standard Feed".

I use filters a lot and now on the HP Mini I have to scroll down the window to get to the next filter I want to check which then scrolls the page back up to the top after picking it. I have nine filters that I check probably once an hour. The page scrolling is tedious to go through. Is there a way you could move Filters up above Groups either manually or automatically based on most common use?

I also don't care for the name change at the top of the "Search results." The name of the search was better at least for how I use it. I can see the actual search criteria in the seach box. I don't need it in both places. Plus, when I'm clicking through a list of saved searches one at a time I often forget where I am in the list. The title helped me keep track.

Seems like the green box should be titled "Friend Lists" (in an actual Friends list, I'd expect to see Joe, Mary, Bob, etc. -- right now, there's a pretty big disconnect btw typical user expectations and what's appearing in that box). And maybe the browse/edit should then be titled "Browse/edit friend lists".

Even more unexpected is that when I click on Friends, I also see Groups. There should probably be another split, so we have Lists, Friends, and Groups. Bret, you guys are going to run out of colors soon! :)

Karl: tried it, but it only brings up a new filter again. If one could edit one's "saved searches list by the NAME of the filter, it'd be easy to delete it. But your suggestion didn't bring up anything that could help me get rid of the two empty filters. Neither has a delete button.

Karl:don't know whether my desktop wasn't showing the left-side bar, but late last night, I was looking at a list of my saved searches with the delete button active for all things in the list. Finally got rid of those two items that were only bringing up a search/filter page. That left-side bar with all listed searches is an elegant solution.

Yes, it is a service from Turkey, I like it very much. I was at most active #4 only a month ago with my old account :) But developers of the project do not implement it anymore, it is pretty old and does not use new features in the friendfeed. for example, they approximate subscriber count, however it is public and certain with new design of ff.

Q about filtering imaginary friends (whatever they're called now). The create new filter dialogue does not accept the name of an imaginary friend in the Include entries from Specific friends/groups box. So the only way I could filter an imaginary friend feed was to add that feed to its own friends list and set the filter to search only that list.

(I have imported my Twitter friends rss feed as an imaginary friend, and want to see everything except the stuff from BreakingNews). I now have a friendlist called Twitter which only has that one feed in it.

It looks like "imaginary friends" are basically replaced with private feeds in the beta. This is actually pretty useful. For example, instead of making an imaginary friend for every webcomic you read, you can put them all in one feed (which is what I'm doing).

Another thing I would like to have back is the ability to filter my discussions. I cannot find conversations where I commented anymore so I can't really see if someone replied. How do we filter for only our likes? Do I need to create saved filters?

"My Discussions" lists your posts, likes and comments all together. For me that is useless because I share a ton from Google Reader.

I'm confused about imaginary friends. Some of mine show up in the Subscriptions box and some don't - I can only see them by clicking their name when they appear in another filter.

Elizabeth, you can determine which people/groups show in the subscriptions box. Click 'edit' and then start typing the name of the person/room you want to appear. It will auto-pop with suggestions, click the one you want.

Thanks, Tina! That helps. Though it's a bit annoying that there's no easy way to get a list of "All subscriptions" where I can then click on an individual one. (I can filter, but then I have to know the name I want to type.)
